The Australian Ratings and Reviews
Great bar to relax in after a long day sightseeing. Extensive choice for both food and drinks. For starters, we had chicken wings and squid to share. Mains were steak sandwiches and fish and chips. We did have an issue with our mains however the owner sorted this immediately and certainly did not impact on our night. The portion sizes were good and the food was both tasty and reasonably priced. Added bonus was the live singer. Check out their “happy hour” and drinks offers. Well worth a visit and would certainly recommend to friends and family.
Just happen to pick up this restaurant because it was close to our hotel, and met some friends there. The crowd was loud and having a lot of fun which made it a little difficult to have a conversation at the table but we all still had a really good time.
Would definitely recommend this place for the service, the food, and the ambience.
Main reason for visiting was to watch the Leeds Rhinos v Wakefield Trinity rugby league match from the UK which the bar usually shows. Booked a table to have a meal while watching the game and the barstaff put the game on the TV by the booth we were in so it was comfortable to watch, eat and drink. The game a disappointment as Wakey lost but the food, drink and service from great friendly people was wonderful and I'll go back again whether to watch a game or just have a great time in a friendly place
I went there to try kangaroo only to find out they were out of it. I ordered a salad and the lamb dish. They both came out at the same time. The lamb was dry and portion was small. My server never checked on me. I would have ordered another drink if she had. I had to ask someone else for my check. When I left my server was in the bar area with a group of people.
Our group had a great time. We booked for 12 people and it steadily increased to about 20 and the staff were great about it. It is never a place for a romantic dinner, it is an after work or sports bar venue. I have read reports that the food and service is poor. The food is good with some dishes and passable with other, but for what people are going for it suffices. for the right occasion we never have a second thought about going back.
Went on a weeknight with an Australian friend. The decor was pleasant, with a choice of booths or free tables in the dining area. The service was great, very quick and attentive. We had calamari, lamb chops, roasted lamb, and pavlova. All dishes were outstanding. For sports enthusiast, this is a great place. Too many screens and a bit too loud for my taste as it becomes difficult to have a conversation. But then I don't care much for American football.
We went for lunch around 12:15 the week after Christmas. The restaurant wasn't busy until about 1:00. Lunch specials were $12. Great for NYC. Australian fare. Tried the kangaroo skewers as appetizer, pricey for 4 little skewers, but we can say we tried kangaroo & liked it. Burger, not on lunch special, HUGE. Aussie Meat Pies were on lunch special & were very tasty
The food is definitely Australian but is very average. We ate there twice because my husband is Australian and we thought we would support the place. We had many entrees between the 5 of us and the best we ate was the calamari. The pavlova crust was too hard. They sat our family up in the noisy bar section for dinner reservations even though we had a child who was under age. Our table was VERY sticky from an earlier group, even after we asked them to clean it. It was not our greatest NYC experience.
Was intrigued by Aussies and kangaroo...
Kangaroo was just OK. Traditional meat pies were also just OK; small portions.
Salad, salmon, and steak sandwich looked better.
Service was spotty - server changed mid-way through out meal without notice
Not terrible, but probably wouldn't go back.
LOUD!!!! Perhaps it is unfair to be too critical of the establishment & focus on directing the comments towards the patrons!!!! Loud!! Rude!!! Inconsiderate of others!!! I would like to blame it on the age of those just barely being of age to drink but that would not be entirely true. Our server was very sweet & I had no expectation of the food but it was respectfully passable. There are way too many other places to eat in our great city that provide that type of food at a reasonable price with a superior environment!!! Ps upon arrival the snippy hostess reprimanded me for only reserving a table for 2 when we are a party of 3. I double checked my confirmation & it was for 3.........perhaps math is not a strength????
The staff at The Australian were so welcoming and hospitable when it came to my birthday arrangements! They gave me so many options as to how I'd like things set up and where I'd like to sit my party. They even gave my party a separate access point to the bar. The food was great as well as the atmosphere!
As an Australian visiting Manhattan, how could I not try lunch at this restaurant? I was concerned that I might be setting myself up for disappointment, but took the chance.
The roast lamb plate was very decent, with potatoes, pumpkin and creamy cauliflower, with an adequate amount of lamb and a nice gravy.
To top it off, the flat white coffee was a nice strength and roast and very acceptable. If there was a teaspoon instead of a stirrer, and some raw sugar it would have been 9/10.
Nice to see and hear other Aussie expats dining in as well. Thanks to, Matt and his team.
Great food, especially for a sports bar type restaurant. Eclectic menu with something for everyone but their Australian selections are great. Have tried the Australian burger, the curry vegetable pie and fish and chips. One of the best fish and chips I've ever had. Really enjoyed their Pavlova dessert too.
We happened to make a reservation during a televised rugby match. There was a $20 cover charge, but the manager was gracious enough to allow us to enter without the cover because we were strictly there for the food. It was an energetic crowd, but it was a very positive experience. The food was very good and the service was great.
