The Ashby offered a wonderful experience for dinner. Location is beautiful, service was professional and efficient, and the food is off the chart. The menu offered a good selection and everything ordered at our table was delicious, with added points for presentation!
Imagine our surprise when we arrived & only knew one staff member! Where was our favorite sommelier, Stuart Brennan? Where were all the friendly waitresses? Luckily, our familiar waiter, Rory, survived the cut. Even the chef was new. He did stop by the table to chat (and we liked his food). No more 3 course menu. Ala carte & an increase on my mini Hillinger brut rose. Their warm bread was replaced by crumbly corn bread (only suitable as an accompaniment for a bowl of chili). Rory brought us a replacement of bread w/ olive oil to dip. I liked the beet salad but first you eat with your eyes. Flip the beet slices over to show the vivid red. Barry's tomato bisque presentation was nice but he did not like the 3 whole cherry tomatoes in the bowl. My crab cake was beautiful & I enjoyed the taste. I did request lump crab meat instead of shredded when we saw the new chef. Barry LOVED his poached prawns with grits! Chef also surprised him with a chocolate Tortepolla w/ raspberry cream. Only on the dinner menu. My donuts were soft (I wish they could have been deep fried for a crispy texture). The ice cream was drizzled with bourbon caramel (I never tasted any bourbon). We planned to have cappuccinos but the machine was broken. I settled for a French Press (good!) So sad to see these changes. Hopefully, we'll adjust & feel like family once again.
Initial service was slow but improved. Took a long time to have wine served.
Excellent location to celebrate our anniversary. Very quiet to easily converse. Top notch food and beverage pairing. You will not go home hungry.
New Years dinner
Nice setting, beautiful ambiance. Food is generally good. Some of the appetizers are very small. The prices are high. Would recommend the Inn to a friend looking for something different for a special occasion, but not for someone looking for a a great meal at a reasonable price.
Birthday for my wife and brother in law
Overall, quite wonderful and look forward to return visits. Staff exceptional in attitude and attentiveness; food all excellent, though uneven portions: healthy pork chop with lovely potato and kale side...mingy serving of monk fish -- delicious, but on uninspired bed of beans. Nice open gift of 1 deviled egg each; lovely gratis corn bread; delicious tiramisu. Wonderful cappuccino (sd be at $6). If the pork is shipped in from Germany, wouldn't it be possible to bring in salad material from somewhere? Only real demerit would be cool 2-party seating adjacent to an exterior wall.
The food was excellent . When we first sat down a staff member asked about drinks, but only gave us one cup of coffee, we had to get up and serve ourselves if we wanted more. This is a beautiful place. This was our second visit.

Went for a birthday dinner - all of the ordered entrees were very well presented and were delicious. The wine list was exceptional and contained dozens of choices and price points.
Wonderful evening with great people and fabulous rib eye steak. Thank you Caroline and Rusty for taking such good care of us!

The food was outstanding! They served deviled eggs that were the best I’ve ever eaten. We also thoroughly enjoyed the steak, which was big enough for 3 people. Everything was beyond delicious!
We love the people at The Ashby and Chef Bradley is our new favorite! We had Oysters and the most amazing Rib Eye steak for 2! We can’t wait to go back and enjoy another dish from the new menu soon!

Exceptional restaurant/inn with wonderful food, wine and service. I love the Ashby Inn for its warmth and "accessibility" ... it's just fine to sit at the bar in blue jeans after a hike, than settle in for a five-star meal in a cozy booth (or on the patio (during warmer months). That said, we've also enjoyed Ashby Inn as much in black-tie and cocktail dress attire. Enjoy!
Our reservation was at 4pm and the last seating was at 4:30. Not only did we have to wait to be seated while standing up, but the food was obviously reheated and was dry, overcooked, and piled in a heap so that it was impossible to identify the potatoes, dressing, sweet potatoes and brussel sprouts from each other. They were all mounded in a big mushy pile. I honestly can't believe a chef would send something like this to a customer's table. I should have sent it back. Will never return.
The restaurant is a longstanding historic building in a small historic part of Virginia outside of Washington DC. It appeared that the restaurant was not prepared for the over-booked crowd and that led to the staff being quite stressed as to how to manage the clientele. All the tables were full and there was no area to wait for one’s reservation. The dinner was a typical Thanksgiving meal with an attempt to Virginian-ize the courses with flavorings which were in fact just mediocre and maybe somewhat pretentious. The portions were small and the meal was expensive. Two slices of roasted turkey, dressing, yams, and two roasted brussel sprouts served with a small roll accompanied by honey butter and cranberry sauce does not warrant an eighty dollar plate cost. Except for the pumpkin pie, which was over-baked and dry, the meal had fair flavor but was more of a ten dollar meal served at a holiday price.
We were required to sit outside in a tent, even though the temperature was at the freezing mark. The staff did an admirable job of trying to keep us comfortable with heaters, but the restaurant simply overbooked. People should not be sitting outdoors on such a cold day.
We came for Thanksgiving lunch. The Inn is historic and charming. The traditional Thanksgiving meal was elegant and delicious without being pretentious. Service was outstanding. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Very pricey, but very, very good. We went for a special occasion, and will do so again.
Food was decent though the menu is limited. French toast was better than other nearby options (then again, Clarke County isn’t a foodie paradise). Fresh squeezed orange juice was awesome. Coffee was good. Eggs Benedict were good but the potatoes served with them lacked inspiration. They appear to be frozen cubed potatoes thrown in the deep fryer. Overall I give the food a 4.
Service was unwelcoming. There was confusion between breakfast and lunch times. I know it wasn’t just us as multiple reservations after us had the same comment. The reservation system indicated breakfast was served until 10:30. We wanted brunch so we selected an 11:30am time and were given a few options including 10:30. We selected 10:30 as we assumed when breakfast ended, brunch began.
When we were seated we were given the breakfast menus. When asked if we could get brunch, one of the staff quickly snapped back saying “you made reservations for BREAKFAST so you’re getting breakfast.” When we said we intended to make a reservation for Brunch she again snapped back saying brunch doesn’t start until 11:30 so a reservation made at 10:30 must be for breakfast. This whole interaction was bizarre but we were fine to just have breakfast. While we were looking at the menu we heard this lady continue to talk about us and complain from a room a few feet behind us. Seriously? If we’re such a hassle to be seated at 10:30, we’d be happy to go elsewhere. Very unfortunate way to start the meal as the food was decent and restaurant clean and nice.
I can’t say we will be back.
Ashby Inn new menu is fine but not a fan of only choices being a 3 course meal. Prices rather expensive for not so special food. I had crab cake which was good but certainly not worth $77. The beef was ordinary for $78.
The service had several issues, when asked about cocktail the server said oh I don't like fancy drinks I just like shots. that was not helpful. Also drinks we order were rather bland, Even the wine was incorrect.
When meals arrived we didn't have right silverware. Had to ask several times for knives to cut steaks. At the end our doggie bag was missing. Server said oops guess it was given to another customer. How gross to be given someone else's food. To make up for that they give us an entire new filet to take home, which was great
Overall I felt prices did not match quality of food. Don't think I would return.
The Ashby Inn is always a treat. We've been there many times, even as chefs change and menus adjust. The food is almost always locally sourced (the venison stew was REALLY locally sourced--the chef came to the table and we talked) and expertly done. The wine list is almost overwhelming. The pork loin with bone in and blue cheese was superb and the venison stew tasty and hearty. The crab cakes could have used a little more spiciness, but that is personal taste. Excellent service, beautiful ambience, and a welcoming staff all combined for a great (as usual!) evening. If you haven't been, go. If you have, well, come again. It is our annual (at least) tradition and should be yours, but bring your credit card and an open mind: it is not cheap. But it provides for a superb dining experience.
My wife and I came here for the first time for a 7:30 reservation on a Wednesday night to celebrate our anniversary. Complementing the early sunsets this time of year, the restaurant was quiet, as there was only one other couple in the dining area that I could see. We were first introduced to the history of the inn as well as the cuisine and new executive chef by our waitress. We opted for a 3 course dinner versus the chef tasting, which we later realized was a good choice considering the ample portions of elevated rustic fare. My wife and I both enjoyed our first and second courses. I had the peanut soup to start, which had a lot of flavor and complexity. I followed that with the pork chop, which was simply prepared, but perfectly seasoned and cooked, which really showcased the quality of the meat. I am not ashamed to admit that I tried to remove every last bit with my hands. The deserts were also nice, but even better was the conservation at the end of our meal with our waitress Bonnie. We will definitely be back to celebrate a special occasion, hopefully at a warmer time of the year when we can enjoy the patio, which looks really cozy.
Farm fresh, seasonal menu. Attractively presented. Extensive wine list. Attentive service. Not cheap.
My wife and I were told this was a can’t miss place, but overall came away a bit disappointed. We tried the tasting menu which had “6 courses”. All in all we were very jealous of our neighbors meals that didn’t do the tasting menu. The quality of the food was okay, but it’s a much better value, higher quality cuisine and larger portion to not do the tasting menu. We came away a bit soured by the experience.
Sat us in the lower level which was best for our boisterous group, also very nice and cozy. Wine selection was great and whiskey selection good. For apps we had the lamb meatballs and soup which were all excellent. Dinner the steak, fried chicken and crab cakes were also excellent. Wish I could recall the name of the amuse bouche, it was amazing, fall flavored. Dessert... the chocolate cake was dry but I liked my bread pudding. Service especially our bartender and sommelier were fantastic couldn’t say enough
A long time favorite has sacrificed delicious for adventurous I'm afraid to say. Sometimes the simpler the better, less is often preferred to more when it comes to food complexity.
Another beautiful drive to Paris! We always receive a warm welcome @ The Ashby Inn. Too cold to sit on the patio but the sun room was very nice. Our server, Amber, was friendly & knowledgeable. Stuart, the superb sommelier, went over & beyond. He always has my favorite brut rose chilling before we arrive. Meeting the new chef, Brad Spates, was a bonus. He found some smoky olive oil to accompany our bread. There were new & creative dishes on the menu. The dozen Sweet Jesus oysters offered with a half bottle of champagne was tempting but I ordered the deconstructed Autumnal soup. Presentation is a show & the hand made bowl was warm. They really need to sell the local pottery in their next door Apothecary. Barry had Shrimp Ceviche w/ a miso broth as his appetizer. Our entrees were Eggs Benedict w/ spaghetti squash (which had a tinny taste). I missed the classic Canadian bacon. Barry's Ashby burger w/ perfect fries was impressive, and he even liked the mushroom ketchup inside the bun. My Knob Creek bourbon bread pudding was slightly over-cooked but delicious & cute (served in a small cast iron skillet). The ice cream was on a mound of Graham Cracker crumbs (I'd prefer the ratio be reversed! Too many crumbs). We enjoyed a French Press & Cappuccino to end our meal. We look forward to our next visit!
Simple menu with memorable twists. Well executed & fantastic service, wine list, local ingredients. Everyone in the staff is truly a gem & very approachable!!!
They try very hard to make sure your visit is special. We did a 3 course $75 each menu. If you want a lot of attentive servers (sometimes not well coordinated, some asking ...and interrupting...the same question twice) interesting food (sometimes didn't quite work but very complicated and presented well and of course small portions, but get the beef at least that was a decent size .... 6 oz total, two pieces) but with that said, the country, quaint, quiet, formal, beautiful setting atmosphere was just perfect. Romantic music in background was great. Between each course we were give a tiny surprise food item that was special, again not super memorable but made for a nice long night and tasty. We were given bread twice, perhaps they didn't want us to go home hungry. The food was rich, but similar to what one would expect for this type of upscale restaurant. The grounds and rooms were beautiful and I loved the "date night" feel of this place. Probably won't go back to dinner, but plan to go to tea or lunch, brunch sometime soon.
Fantastic - best meal we've had in a very long time. My girlfriend and I ate there while spending a weekend away at the Inn. The staff was polite and approachable, and the food was exquisite. The sommelier was extremely friendly and helpful in choosing a bottle of wine that we'd both enjoy.

Fabulous meal and service in a quiet and relaxed atmosphere. We dine out often in notable restaurants; this was a meal we will long remember.

Absolutely remarkable. The Ashby Inn is a lovely, authentic English-Style Inn with a wonderful restaurant. The menu is creative and the staff is impeccable. The sommelier is an expert in his craft, knowledgeable and approachable. I went here on advise of a colleague who raved about the creative dishes and wonderful service. It lived up to her recommendation and then some. What a lovely gem in the heart of wine country. I will be back!
