My wife and I dined at the Ashby Inn for our 29th wedding anniversary. We really had fun. Great and interesting food, great service. A bit of a food adventure. They bring out canapes, amuse bouches, palette cleansers, and the like, which adds to the fun and interest. It's got some of the same style and approach as the Inn at Little Washington.
One or two items may have suffered from being a little chilled, i.e. prepped early and kept chilled. Over chilling can mute flavors. The pork terrine was really tasty and well served, but a little dense. Maybe terrines are normally, I don't have a lot of terrine experience.
First off, great restaurant and always a pleasure to dine. Lovely place, nice service and creative dishes that are indeed fit for foodies.
Couple of recent wrinkles:
1. The newest menu begins at a two course $60 prix fixe. There are no small plate or app options outside this minimum. For someone who is a very light eater, this is a bit of an issue.
2. We made early reservations and arrived to an empty restaurant. Rather than being seated, we were told that they were getting ready for a few very large groups and would we mind waiting in the bar area? Not a problem, but we soon realized this was being suggested for every table. There were no large parties. I don't mind the desire to drive up bar revenue but I do mind dishonesty.
3. I have a very severe nut allergy and was pleased that my allergy profile is on record. Our server greeted us to review and make well informed suggestions . Super! I reiterated that my most severe reaction would come with a hazelnut; prolific on the menu. She double checked with the chef and I happily chose one of the entrees recommended.
It arrived with tiny swirls of cream, not identified by the servers explanation of the presentation.
with further questioning our server dashed back to the kitchen to confirm it was indeed hazelnut. My oh my.
I was not comfortable eating the replacement plate, fearing the expensive contaminated protein might have been replated. My husband enjoyed two dinners.
We likely won't return. The care and attention is all fabulous, the food is creative and beautifully plated but just too complex for someone with a nut allergy. Unfortunately, there are no simple options on the menu.
Can't recommend this lovely restaurant for those with allergies.
Great dining experience! The staff was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable about the food. The food was unique, creative and full of flavor. We each did a 3 course dinner, and we sampled from each other's plates...each was distinct, delicate and "full bodied." The desserts were amazing, offering subtle sweetness.
We were delighted to squeeze in a drive to Ashby Inn in the country before the Fall color faded. An al fresco brunch was made possible with the addition of space heaters & plastic sides on the patio. As always, we were warmly greeted by staff & soon I was sipping my brut rose as we enjoyed the garden from our corner table. Warm bread with sweet butter sprinkled with sea salt, then appetizers: smoked trout rillettes were smaller than anticipated but the butternut squash soup presentation was perfect. Now if the Apothecary would start selling the gorgeous pottery bowls! Barry chose the pork sandwich while I claimed the flank steak. I asked for it to be prepared medium rare. Our very nice waitress informed us that it was always cooked to medium. (the surprise was to get the dish entirely RARE!). We both had the chocolate mousse dome & cappuccinos. A lovely way to start our weekend!
From start to finish the Ashby Inn was an excellent way to spend our 30th wedding anniversary. It had been many years since we made the trek to Paris, VA. It makes for an excellent conversation starter when you tell your friends and coworkers you are going to Paris for dinner!
We were aware of a new chef taking over the kitchen earlier in the year and he and his team did not disappoint from the assorted canapés (pictured below is the fig with blue cheese creme fraiche) which come to the table just as you sit down, to the excellent mushroom salad with Burgundy black truffles the likes that you have never tasted before (sun chokes puree, Burgundy black truffles, pistachio dried foam cake, neberdini, shiitake and black trumpet mushrooms, 9 grain crumble, kale, pickled red onions and roasted sun chokes) all the way through to dessert, each dish was full of surprises and ingredients you do not expect that accent the food like a hand fits a glove. Who would have ever thought that a steak entree could be presented so beautifully that the steak becomes just one part the adventure?
The team at the Ashby take each dish into new creative directions that surprise and delight and puts the Ashby Inn in the rarefied air of great meals and must be seen and tasted to believe.
The wine list is excellent and reasonably priced as is the dinner and is well worth the drive out I66 to route 17 and Paris. We went on a weekday and spent time in Winchester, VA (15 mins from Paris) to get ahead of the rush hour for a 5:30pm reservation.
We have stayed and eaten at the Ashby in several times and I come away feeling the same way each time. Its good but not great. Our server mentioned that the chef had been there for about a year. I get the sense that he/she was striving for culinary greatness but produced dishes that were overly complex and not totally satisfying. I had the mushroom salad with, pistachio and a sun choke puree...the puree was way too cold and the mushroom were mushy. I had the pork tenderloin with a grit cake...the grit cake was the best thing I ate there...the pork was good, not great. My wife had the pork terrine and the rib eye...the former was bland but the rib eye was great....so you get the picture good but not great....I bet if they simplified the preparations it would be awesome....Bonnie and Stu were great and on a beautiful fall day in horse country...how can you complain!
We love the setting and the country elegance of the Ashby Inn. Our room in the Schoolhouse had a lovely view, a porch, and a fireplace. Perfect for an autumn evening. The restaurant is outstanding, offering a tasting menu with exquisite choices and lovely touches in between. The sommelier was informative and attentive. What a wonderful way to celebrate our anniversary!
Great seasonal food selection with many items from local purveyors. Beautifully presented. Extensive wine list- maybe too extensive ; and many, very expensive.
Lovely gardens in back for cocktail before dinner. Pleasant weather can choose to dine in an semi-enclosed patio.
Wait staff will check often.
Drive to country and enjoy.
A potential future inn at little washington. super food, creative recipes and presentations, luxurious touches. just one nit: servers please do not use “we” and “our” concerning the meal etc—you are not partaking nor the queen of england. otherwise, plan to go often as i can—terrific!
In a bucolic setting in Virginia the Ashby Inn could actually get away with just ordinary food. The owners, however, have clearly set a much higher bar. This is one of the best kept culinary secrets in Virginia. Not only is the food fresh, the presentation exceptional, and the service excellent, but the food creations are innovative yet totally comfortable.
Food was very artfulyy presented . The $43 3-course menu is a decent vaue. Service was warm and slightly inept; needs to be more proactive [when bread is nearly gone ask if visistor would like more]. Attractive dining room in peaceful small town.
Funny, I can't recall what I ate though I enjoyed it; I think the relaxing atmosphere lulled me into forgestfulness.
The setting is lovely. But that's about where it ended for us. We were seated and then given time to peruse the menu. My husband wanted the veg tasting menu, and I wanted to order from the main menu. But, we were told if one person wants the tasting menu, the entire table has to order it. (We should've been told this when we were seated and it should be written in the menu.)
The food was ok. My pumpkin soup was good, but the addition of a chickpea ball or fritter detracted. I got the pork tenderloin (unexceptional) with octopus (fishy). My husband got the ribeye--nice sauce, but flavorless meat. The desserts were different. I ordered the cheese plate, and the selections were outstanding. My husband said his chocolate mousse was maybe the best he's ever had. (If we were dessert people, maybe this would carry more weight.)
Overall, for the price, I'd expect much better food. And I've only one other time done a tasting menu where there was a rule that the whole table had to do it. It was annoying then, too, but they at least told us before we made our initial choices. So: Good service + only ok food + inflexibility = "fair", which = 2 stars.
Beautiful setting with opportunity to walk in the garden before and after our meal. Excellent food overall with one dish introducing me to a new type of fish I'd never heard of before. The chicken (from a local farm) salad was the only course that wasn't outstanding, but still it was tasty. The chocolate mousse with hazlenut icecream was my favorite from the six courses the two of us ordered for our lunch. Loved the homemade butter that accompanied the french bread.
I have been a devoted patron of the Ashby Inn for more than two decades, practically from the day that it opened. I am never, ever been disappointed. The menu regularly changes with new gastronomical masterpieces, beautifully presented. Very attentive service, and a real expert on wines. Try some of his picks for VA wines rather than the usual french or california wines. (There is also a relatively nearby distillery that makes a beautiful rye whiskey, 75% rye, 25% malted barely in the Scotch mode). The AI "mixologist" must have a Phd in chemistry. Each time there is a new variation on classic drinks. All delicious, including the 1900 variation of the Sazerac with absinthe and a sugar cube on a spoon to "mellow" the absinthe. Or an improved Manhattan .Time machine.
Only about an hour from DC. You can stay over if you wish. The AI sits at the base of the Blue Ridge mountains. Spectacular scenery, and the shenandoah river and valley 10 minutes away. Paris constantly changed hands in the War Between the States The ghost of Stonewall Jackson, on his way to the first battle of Manassas or Bull Run, depending upon your religious persuasion, spent the night in front of the AI with his troops. He stood guard so they could sleep. Marquis de Lafayette visited Paris on his victory tour of the revolutionary war. the house still stands sentinal to the Ashby Gap in the BR This is not all of thee historic, but I am out of space.
We were visiting the area and took a friend. I wanted to go back and just take photographs of all the nooks and crannies, the stairwells and multiple intimate rooms! The ambience was amazing!! The service was wonderful. It was pricier that we were expecting, but everything that went into our mouths just melted with deliciousness!! The combinations of flavors was not anything I have ever experienced!! If I were back in the area, I would want to go again!!
Always a joy to drive out to Paris for an outdoor brunch @ The Ashby Inn. They saved our favorite table with a view of their beautiful gardens. Stuart recommended a nice brut rose Grande Cru to enjoy with the warm bread & sweet butter sprinkled w/ sea salt. Barry had a pastrami dish to start & I had a deconstructed squash soup. They pour the liquid portion into the bowl at the table, so a show is included. We had a new waitress who was very friendly & informed. My entrée was a chicken salad w/ green goddess dressing. Barry had a pig jowl Benedict. We were disappointed that there was no chocolate dessert on the menu (again!!!) But they produced a special chocolate-ginger mousse in a dome surrounded by paper thin pear slices & toasted hazelnuts (ala mode). I ordered the cheese plate. 5 cheeses, tomato jam & micro-greens served with crackers. We both had cappuccinos served with rock candy stirrers. We highly recommend this slice of heaven for a Sunday afternoon!
