The Ashby Inn
We are always well taken care of @ The Ashby Inn. Our favorite table overlooking the garden was awaiting us. John, the sommelier, gave me a choice (tastes) of 2 different brut rose. The bread basket has changed & included warm corn bread. My suggestion is to soften some butter & mix with honey rather than presenting an herb butter for all the types of breads. Our appetizers were delicious. Barry had Finnan Hadde & I chose the cold Vicchyssoise topped with caviar. Entrees were Short ribs (from Martin's) over soft polenta and my lobster roll (I asked for melted butter as they serve it in Maine). They need to invest in top loading rolls, and remove the arugula, onion & thyme to be authentic. The amount of lobster was good. Barry had a chocolate dome to satisfy his chocolate craving while I ordered the panna cotta. Superb except that the heat softened the meringue garnish. Double Cappuccinos ended our feast. Service was exceptional. Thanks, Rusty! And thanks for taking great photos of us, John!
My husband and I went for our wedding anniversary. Loved the ambiance. The food was delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Wonderful service. Beautiful atmosphere. Delicious food. I love this place!
This restaurant appears to have changed its chefs several times recently but the food quality remains outstanding at this remarkable restaurant with its gorgeous rural setting despite being situated only 1 hour away from Washington DC. We loved everything we ordered, especially the locally inspired / procured dishes and wines.
Was disaapointed in this trip to the Ashby Inn. Service wasn't always prompt and they totally forgot to recognize a birthday after they said that they would. The food was good but not great like our previous trip to the Inn. Overall, the experience did not justify the steep price.
The Ashby is a perfect place for a leisurely Saturday or Sunday lunch. It has become our special occasion place. The cuisine is excellent and the setting is so lovely and relaxing.
Enjoy fine dining in the virginia countryside. Makes an excellend "end of day" meal after touring the extensive wineries in the area. Eat in the ashby gap, one of the most picturesque vistas in virginia and eat a wonderful meal in a pastoral setting.
Thank you for the feedback, we are so happy to hear that you had a great experience. We definitely agree! After touring local vineyards and the nearby hiking attractions The Ashby Inn makes for a perfect stopping point.
Lovely as usual with the exception of the waiter. He insinuated himself in such an uncomfortable way. I’ve never seen him before. He kept saying really dumb things about putting things on our bill and he didn’t seem to like the fact one person didn’t order a cocktail. The food was superb but oddly we waited and waited for it. This isn’t normal.
We arrived at 1:30 and didn’t get our food for an hour. I will go again but I’m not tolerating the waiter. He was older Hispanic Male, balding and very Very inappropriate. Can the bad jokes and rely on good service. That’s all I need.
The food here was good before, but with the new chef it is even more extraordinary! So fresh, so beautifully presented,so delicious. It is well worth the trip from DC.
We are so glad that you enjoyed your evening with us and are also grateful that you took the drive from DC. Thank you so much for the thoughtful review, we are very pleased that you enjoyed Chef Johns cuisine. We do hope to have you join us again at The Ashby Inn!
Sunday brunch outside on the patio overlooking the meadow was lovely. My garden salad was bursting with color - including some flower petals - and it was obvious the ingredients didn’t travel far. My main entree was their mushroom strudel and it was excellent. Finally, for dessert I ordered their donuts brushed with powdered sugar with a caramel sauce. Dessert vanished too quickly. Overall, an excellent meal and I look forward to returning.
The food was incredible and the service was very attentive without being overbearing. The wine list was comprehensive and the sommelier was knowledgeable. Our party ordered the chefs select menu that had wine pairings with all seven courses, the pairings were incredibly complimentary.
Thank you so much for the positive feedback and taking the time to post this generous review. We are so thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the chefs tasting menu with wine pairings, what a perfect way to enjoy the evening! We hope to have you join us again in the near future.
The food was fabulous! Quiet, sensitive service, in a beautiful country setting. Worth the trip from DC in every way!
We had the best time at Ashby! We ate outside on the patio and got to enjoy the Amazing food (Thank You Chef John) and saw many of our favorite people who are on the staff and met a couple new ones. Jose and Rebekah took wonderful care of us. We stayed so late we decided to stay at the inn and enjoy a beautiful, comfortable room! We enjoy The Ashby Inn more every time we go!
Lovely setting, gracious service and unique and delectable food. Wonderful experience
We’ve been to the Ashby inn many times and have always loved it. For some reason the menu this time was not as impressive. There didn’t seem to be anything creative in terms of the meal offerings and there were no specials. I’m not sure if they are trying to cater to a different type of clientele but it was a very we’ve been to the Ashby inn many times and have always loved it. For some reason the menu this time was not as impressive. There didn’t seem to be anything creative in terms of the meal choices and there were no specials. I’m not sure if they are trying to cater to a different type of clientele but it was a very “safe” menu. We will probably wait a few months and give it one more try. The food was good but not as good as it has been.
We were so sad to see Stuart (sommelier) & our favorite wait staff gone the last time we dined at Ashby Inn. Now that the weather is nice & the garden is full, we decided to try it again. Happily, the new chef (formerly @ The Goodstone Inn), sommelier & Rusty (our waiter) impressed! Sorry that my Hillinger brut rose minis are no longer available but they made me a Kir Royale (over achieving the lemon peel). The bread was not what we used to crave but they remembered that we liked EVOO as a dip. Our appetizers were beautiful & really delicious. Barry had the Finnan Haddie & I had Vichyssoise w/ caviar & edible flower petals. If only they would finally agree to sell their gorgeous pottery bowls. Barry had the reliable Ashby Burger while I chose the Eggs Benedict. My only complaint is that I could not cut the Canadian bacon, and the garlic chips were blackened & bitter. Perfectly cooked eggs & potatoes, and a wonderful hollandaise sauce. The salad needs to be re-imagined. The dressing tasted liquid onions. They did not make a big deal over Barry's birthday but he was given a 2nd chocolate choice for dessert. The chocolate dome was excellent (but he'd prefer a dark chocolate ganache to a light mousse inside). They had dipped the whole hazelnuts in a syrup, pulling it up to harden. Very creative! My Beignets arrived as described on the menu, with powdered sugar & a very good caramel smear (needed more sauce & they brought it). The cup of bland applesauce was not on the menu & needs to never appear with this dessert again. Cappuccino had 2/3 foam & not enough coffee. Charmingly served with rock candy on a stick. The garden was beautiful!
Wonderful room and quiet dinner on patio overlooking beautiful gardens and mountain range. Service was attentive, friendly, and helpful in pairing food and wines. We’ll be back...
Absolutely the best restaurant West of DC with the exception of the Inn at Little Washington. The food is creative, flavorful and perfectly prepared. The service was efficient but just friendly enough. The location is beautiful. We could not have had a better experience. This is probably our tenth visit in the last three years and each one has been on par with numerous 3 star Michelin restaurants we have eaten at during that same time period.
Farm to table cooking, thoughtful details and impeccable service. Beautiful surroundings as well! Wonderful for a date night.
This is one of our favorite restaurants. One area to improve is the pour. It is a little skimpy for the wine price.
Lovely date night dining experience. Have been here many times. The night was quite warm but the ceiling fans and shade made for a very comfortable dinner al fresco. The view is remarkable. The service was excellent and the mood very smooth. The food was served elegantly and most delicious. Excellent sommelier too.
We are so very glad that we provided a romantic evening for your date night at The Ashby Inn. Thank you for your positive review and kind words. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
One of the best outdoor dining patios in Northern Virginia. Had Finnan Haddie for the first time. Delicious! Wine selection huge but pricey.
We loved it here! The food was delicious - especially the duck. The waiters were friendly. The ambiance is beautiful. We highly recommend it to others for a special occasion.
We attended brunch at the Ashby Inn on Saturday, June 22nd. From the very first moment we parked, we were greeted by happy and cordial staff. Even though we arrived a few minutes early, the host invited us to wait in the very peaceful library room while the kitchen was preparing for service.
After we were seated, our waitress team graciously presented their brunch menu and effortlessly attended to every need. From the down-home Virginian cornbread muffins to the exquisite Eggs Benedict, each plate was balanced in presentation, palate, and timing. It was far more than just eating a meal outside. For us, brunch transformed into a lovely, restorative, and intimate experience. We felt very special and valued as your guests.
We want to sincerely thank the staff of the Ashby Inn for helping us celebrate our third Anniversary. We look forward to coming back!

Amazing food...my family and I love this place!!!!
Excellent service and food. The asparagus soup appetizer and the duck entree were delicious.
We were with 4 friends & were able to get a table outside on the patio which was perfect. Between my husband & I we thought the hot asparagus with egg appetizer & the red snapper for the main course were our favorites. Service was just a little slow from our appetizers to the main course. It was such a nice evening & setting.
Excellent wine pairing and a lovely, quiet and understated elegance.
This was our third or fourth stay, the first under current ownership. They have kept the place up very well. The room (Lafayette) was charming, lovely view from the balcony. We ate dinner and breakfast the next day. Both very good. We will definitely come back and will (already have) recommended the place to friends.
Great meal and service!
New chef as of May 2019 is outstanding! If you haven’t been recently- go!
We had a lively patio dinner, the five of us, after a day of visiting nearby wineries.
Perfect once again. Crab cake came with a heavenly pickled corn relish that stole the show. Duck was melt in your mouth, NY strips cooked to perfection. A salted caramel dessert with french press coffee finished the meal. Service is always impeccable. Only disappointment was my plaque had been removed. A customer since 1986, you could have a plaque at your favorite table. A small thing, but a wonderful thing. Maybe it was relocated, hope they let me know.
Great new chef! Amazing meal!
In the midst of a locally quiet community of 100 or more ancient homes the Ashby Inn is gorgeous. Eating outside in a late morning brunch we were surrounded by lovely colorful plants and active wild birds of several colorful species. This is white table cloth French style auberge with delicious food individually made by a skilled chef and served by an experienced attentive staff. This is a lovely place not to be missed.
We love Ashby Inn’s brunch on a summer day in their lovely garden and outdoor dining area! Five stars.
Food is way too salty. I ordered pea soup and in addition to being salty there was an egg in it. It was not what I expected with green pea soup. I was also disappointed with the smoked salmon omelet. It was not cooked enough for me. It appeared that the home fries had been doused with salt just before serving.
Love the Ashby Inn. Never disappoints. Food yesterday was top notch. Tasty omelettes, amazing triple roasted potatoes. Heavenly black eyed pea succotash and a fluffy croissant. The ambience was amazing and our server was five star!
This was probably our fifth time eating at the Ashby Inn and, as always, my wife and I had a very good meal for a very fair price. Our server was excellent, the sommelier knowledgeable, and the food tasty and eye appealing. It's become our go-to place for special occasions.
Our lunch outside was most enjoyable with a perfect view of the gardens in spring bloom.
As always, the food was excellent. Both of us were impressed with the flavor and presentation of the Finnan Haddie. The carrot salad was also outstanding. My friend and I meet a few times a year for lunch and the Inn is one of our favorites. Not only is the food good, but the service is also friendly and efficient. The country atmosphere makes it easy to relax and talk. We appreciate that the Inn staff makes us feel welcome to stay and talk.
