About The Artist's Palate
Installed in a building once occupied by a Golden Era clothing store, M. Schwartz, The Artist’s Palate restaurant has brought back life to Main Street in Poughkeepsie. Designers have reworked the interior space of the 70-seat dining room to combine cosmopolitan elegance with an edgy industrial accent. Like the décor, the menu showcases innovation: An extensive array of wines, handcrafted beers and unique cocktails complement our revolving seasonal menu. The lunch menu is available for delivery within the city from 11am-2:30pm.
As its name suggests, The Artist’s Palate treats food as art, introducing new flavor combinations to local and regional diners. What is more, the restaurant gallery is committed to showcasing the best of up-and-coming local artists in a revolving exhibition. When it opened in 2006, the restaurant was quickly lauded by local and regional restaurant critics and discerning diners. The Artist’s Palate has fast become a Dutchess County institution.

We had a good dinner in this attractive, inviting restaurant. Our server explained menu items carefully, answered our questions and seemed genuinely interested in our thoughts on the food. Our chacuterie plate was delicious, as was my branzino. Nice dinner in a lovely spot!
New chef and new menu! Breaded chicken wings with Buttermilk dipping sauce and kale salad with pistachio dressing were great. Pork and pumpkin stew was also a great surprise. Something different and completely wonderful-spicy, crunchy pipitos, and hearty. We will be back!
We had a party of 8 celebrating 3 birthdays. I emailed ahead, called the night before and thirdly, asked the waitress for candles in our dessert. Despite all the planning, it didn't happen, so that was the disappointment of the night. The food was good though.
We were over an hour late for our reservation, but the hostess welcomed us, conferred with other staff, and cleared and set a table for us as quickly as they could. The food was delicious and ample; in fact, the meat & cheese appetizer we shared was SO ample we couldn’t finish our entrees. I ordered the duck, cooked perfectly, with a crispy skin and juicy interior. I took the waiter’s wine recommendation (Rioja) and I’m glad I did. The service was impeccable.
Great service, outstanding and on point. Food was delicious, current and farm fresh, each of us in a party of four tried different items from the menu; all were very pleased with presentation , flavors, and selection. Highly recommend for dinner. We’ve been several times, always very pleased and will definitely recommend to others. Changing menu based on seasonal options are keeps each visit to the restaurant fresh.
We arrived to a beautifully decorated space and were seated. Our waiter was quick to arrive and very attentive showing a great knowledge of the menu and individual ingredients. When asked for a recommendation, he quickly had an answer and suggested a fantastic dish. Food was beautifully presented, keeping true to the business name, and the only thing better than the look, was the taste. We had a fantastic experience and will definitely be back to sample more of what this place has to offer.

meal. We were 5, all foodies and we own a restaurant ourselves so are highly critical when we go out. Food was delicious and between us we had most things on the menu.
Only problem was the noise - designers clearly had no concept of acoustics. This can easily be fixed.
Our group was visiting Poughkeepsie, NY for the day and discovered The Artist's Palate after viewing their menu on the website. We were all delighted with our lunches - creativity and variety in the menu was excellent, and each dish was artfully prepared. Delicious!
I went to the Artist's Palate on a wednesday afternoon for a coworker's birthday. To be fair, our party of 3 was 7 minutes late for our reservation, but I don't think it mattered too much. There was one server for the entire dining room and host station. He seemed to be stretched a bit thin for the 8 tables of 2-4 during our visit. It took about 15 minutes for our order to be taken, and then about 40 minutes after that to get our food. I had the Thai chicken wrap which was tasty, one had the lobster mac and cheese, and the other had a ricotta dumpling special. We all agreed we liked our meals, and because we did not need to hurry back to work, we ordered dessert. That was the best part in all our opinions. We ordered and shared the creme brulee, lemon pound cake and the mascarpone ice crean- the latter was our hands down favorite.
All in all, we had a pleasant meal, but the lack of service was very noticeable, to the point where it was slightly detrimental to our experience. If you're not in a rush, I may suggest trying the Artist's Palate, only if the menu interests you.
While the restaurant had quality good food and service, something about the place is quite not there yet. We couldn’t place the feeling. Was it meant to be High Class? Pretentious? Neighborhood? Yes, the restaurant is on the expensive side (dinner for two was over $100). The food and service didn’t match the environment. As for the food, it was good, but it didn’t scream “Hell Yeah”. It reminded me of a restaurant that just opened and wants to be the next “hot spot”, but it doesn’t know how to get there or stay there.
However, if you are looking for a nice place to go on a date, it would be a good spot. However, it isn’t a romantic location with dim lighting, it’s more of a first date get to know you kind of place.
Again, Service good, Food good, just something is off or out of sorts…
Artist's Palate catered a dinner for my Vassar reunion a year ago, and when I was back in Poughkeepsie recently, I booked a table for dinner. My meal was extraordinary -- duck breast, with a garnish of sauteed eggplant (tiny cubes), locally sourced sour cherries (yum), and mint -- over a light smear of yogurt that yielded a lovely creamy sauce with the duck jus and a delightfully fresh combination of flavors. Creme brûlée for dessert, with a touch of orange that reminded me of the original Cambridge version, was a perfect cap to the meal. The service was excellent, and the wine list. appropriate to the menu. Look for parking on Main Street if possible.
Cocktails: I had a manhattan. Best I have had in a long time. Loved the bartender's using local sour cherries instead of a Maraschino cherry.
Appetizers: I had the Artist's Plate. The selections of cured meats & olives were boring--they all tasted the same. Rating: 2. My husband had the Ahi tuna appetizer 4.
Entrees: I had the duck breast and he had the rack of lamb. My duck breast was cooked in the Magret fashion and was the best I have had outside of SW France. Hudson Valley ducks don't have as beefy a taste as France's Moulard ducks and their breasts aren't as large. The chef chose to use a local product and prepared it perfectly. I appreciated the chef using fried potato more as a garnish. Liked the sour cherries. I rate the duck 5. My husband rates his rack of lamb a 4 because it was not as juicy as some he has had.
Dessert: Both had the Creme Brulee. Good, but nothing special. Could not taste the Grand Marnier.
Wine: I found the wine list rather limited unless you are prepared to pay $60+ for a bottle. I did appreciate the inclusion of half-bottles, which few restaurants do. We got the 2007 Spanish Syrah. It was excellent. My husband said several times how much he liked it. At $42, it was a relative bargain.

We were over 20 minutes early because there was no traffic on the Mid-Hudson bridge. The host asked to wait while our table was cleared, but it was a very short wait because he found us another table. The host also pitched in and served two items.

Our server was good. No slip ups on our orders. She even showed up to pour our wine--something that was expected, but has become exceptionally rare. She also refreshed our water and brought us a larger bottle without our asking.

Everything about this meal was delicious. Just around the corner from Vassar College, a great place for dinning after a full day of activities for family weekend at Vassar. All of our dishes from drinks to appetizers to salads to main entree to dessert was delicious and perfectly cooked. Portions were just right. Look forward to returning during our next visit.
I was visiting the Poughkeepsie area with my father. We hadn't thought to book at one of the Culinary Institute's restaurants months in advance and couldn't get a reservation at a decent time. I read a review of The Artist's Palate that the chef was a graduate of the Culinary Institute and that the food was good. We decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed. Apparently, the former chef is no longer there, but the current chef is quite talented. My father had the grilled rack of lamb and couldn't stop raving about it. I felt equally as delighted with my scallops dish. The server was attentive, but not intrusive. I would definitely recommend The Artist's Palate and I would definitely go back.
