About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Innovative
  • Romantic
We are excited to announce that award winning restaurant, the Artichoke, set in the beautiful market town of Old Amersham, has revealed its new extended space together with sumptuous contemporary interiors. Those who have dined before will notice the fluid addition with its soothing and muted colours which compliments the already carefully considered décor. The gorgeous ‘Living Wall’ of herbs is still in place, and you are now seated in either the 'Garden Dining Room’, or the 'Kitchen Dining Room, where you can view Laurie and his team hard at work in the open kitchen and reserve one of the Chef's Table, a great option for sampling the innovative tasting menus. There is also the ‘Wine Dining Room’ on the first floor leading to the well stocked cellar, perfect for sophisticated business dining, private celebrations and wine events. Chef/owner Laurie Gear oversees the refined modern European menu filled with not only charming seasonal additions but foraged herbs, berries and flowers.

Disappointing , visit 4-5 times a year for a number of years . A la Carte menu now very limited which we normally choose from. Birthday treat ( not acknowledged by the Artichoke) so ordered two glasses of rose champagne and bloody mary. Waitress emptied bottom of one bottle into one glass and did the same emptying another bottle into the other glass ! both glasses had different measures and were lower than the glasses on the next table. . When the bill came was charged for bloody mary and 3 glasses of short measures at £19.00 a pop. Food as ever was excellent but spoilt by large table very close to us . Two smokers who were off every 15 minutes and back smelling like an ashtray All three of us had set lunch two declined the sweet course having informed the manager before ordering. I had cheese but was still charged £5.50. All a bit tardy as I said excellent food but in the end very disappointing

We had the tasting menu and wine flight. The cod and duck courses were excellent. the only disappointment was not many petit fours.

After visiting the Artichoke a few times and quite enjoyed the visits we were very disappointed with our last visit. There were a number of reasons. Parts of our meals were very good, particularly the main courses, but we still had a number of complaints. First our starters, which were poor. My wife's swede soup looked very unappetising, and tasted of very little. We ordered glassed of wine, which were good, but were not offered a taste at all. We also felt that the volumes of wine appeared rather less than expected. Our main courses were much better, and the duck and fish items were excellently cooked, but the quantity of vegetables were very small. I had half a carrot and one very small fondant potato, together with sauces. My wife's meal contained 4 small pieces of celery. We didn't regard this as satisfactory. The desserts were extremely good, well designed and very tasty. We were twice asked if everything was OK, and we replied some good, and some bad. Neither waiter expressed any interest in our complaints, but just smiled and walked away. Overall a dissatisfactory experience. I doubt we will go back. Barry Hughes

Its a great place for dinner and I’d usually give a 5 star - however on the occasion we felt that a couple of the meals on the sampling menu were quite rich - richer than usual.

The menu is always excellent with something (unusual) for everyone. Artichoke is the only truly excellent culinary experience within 10 miles of Amersham. We’ve only had great experiences there. Not cheap but good value.

Whilst the food was superb, this was our golden wedding anniversary and unknown to me the restaurant had been told, That being so they sat two couples on large tables to my left and another couple away to my right and then placed another couple on a small table like ours about 9inches to my right. This meant that we had to suffer a couple discussing Business and Brexit all evening and not particularly quietly either. Then we had a female sommellier who seemed to think the wines from the wine flight were hers to guard with her life. I understand that when you have the wine flight with the tasting meal that you receive 125ml with each course. We have the same glasses that the restaurnat uses and I can assure you that of the five glasses she poured not one exceeded 100ml. Thankfully the last glass was served by the male sommellier and at last we got served a proper measure. This restaurant has a great reputation and charges accordingly so it seriously needs to look at its wine flight deal and the way its seats customers who are there for special occasions or otherwise its reputation will soon be tarnnished.

Great food and we thought good value for what we had. Would highly recommend it. Only negative is that some of the waiters didn’t seem sure what they were serving when they ran through the explanation of a dish. Will certainly return.
