Spats at the Grill (Hotel State College)
Executive Chef: Robert Burger
General Manager: Becky Burger
Went there for 35th wedding anniversary and had corner table in the windows. romantic and great for people watching on the streets. My blackened duck breast was delicious. Our waiter, Kip, was spot on with fantastic service and recommendations to enhance our experience. He is a true pro at his craft!
Excellent food and service. Shrimp and grits, planked salmon was perfectly prepared.
Great location overlooking the street
The plank salmon was excellent.
They have an extensive wine selection, too.
I had dinner here with my son for Mother's Day. The special menu was outstanding! I ordered the veggie lasagna - the first time I've ever ordered a vegetarian dish, and it was so delicious I didn't even miss the meat. Our server was attentive and friendly, the food came out in a timely manner, and the bartender made a drink for me that wasn't on the menu, just to suit my taste. The atmosphere was lively without being loud, the views from above College Avenue were entertaining, and the restaurant had an inviting and comfortable feel to it. It was a wonderful dining experience!
Fantastic food. My wife raved over & over about the Chef’s ravioli. Grilled brussel sprouts were perfectly done. Deserts were wonderful. Very enjoyable evening.
Our food never arrived prior to a show that we were seeing. We gave them close to 2 hours. For our trouble they handed us a $25 gift card for four people not eating dinner. This would barely cover 1 entree. One of our party had to leave the concert we were seeing because his blood sugar was so low. So we not only lost out on dinner but a $50 concert ticket as well. Very disappointing experience and I think the compensation should have been a little more robust for a party of 4 not being fed within a 2 hour time frame.
The food and service was wonderful and the ambiance is so wonderful! I would say the only drawback is that anyone with mobility issues will find it hard to go there and enjoy all that Spats has to offer.
Good, the section we were in was rather loud but it was also in the middle of dinner. Otherwise the food was great and there was good service.
Took 50 minutes to get our food. Out of one of the cocktails I wanted. Meals were expensive; not worth the money. Lacked real cajun flavor. View was beautiful though.
The food is the same great quality and level of creativity we came to love! Charismatic staff and a great view of downtown!
I went here for my parents to meet my boyfriend. My dad introduced me to Spats back when it was its own restaurant down the street. The food then was sublime. Now it has changed a bit, but not in a bad way. It’s just different now. Not the same Spats, but still good food nonetheless. I will be dining here again.
Food wasn't as good as I was expecting. Service was good...the risotto was not done. The rice was too al dente. Don't think we'll go back.
It was 95 degrees on a Saturday night!! So very hot, shoved into a tiny table that could hold little more than wine glasses and a bread plate. Service was terrible. Ordered a charcuterie that was little more than ring bologna and sharp cheese on a cutting board. Had to ask what was even being served. My friend's filet was really good, only redemption after I had the creamed corn chicken, shrimp and andouille sausage on a piece of corn bread that was sour with pieces of baking soda not even mixed in.
Went to Spats over Easter weekend to celebrate my daughter's 21 st birthday. The food was exceptional. I had the duck breast with collard greens and grits it was cooked perfectly. We had a window table that looked over College Ave which added a special touch to the evening. Just be prepared to pay some big bucks for dinner.
Delicious food. Great service! We thoroughly enjoyed our night at Spats at Allen Street Grille
Great view from table down Allen street. Adam was a great server. Two of decided to a few small plates. Enjoyed the tuna tacos and seafood nachos. Will return next time I'm in the area.
Food and service here are both great--it's the noise level, an endless, jarring cacophony, that's hard to forgive. The metal ceiling and smooth wall surfaces seem to reflect and magnify the decibel level of normal table conversation, forcing diners to talk even louder in order to be heard over the din. Spats should do something to try to tone it down.
We had an awesome time ! Food, service and atmosphere fantastic ! We WILL be back !!!!
We had a wonderful meal at Spats during Parent's Weekend with a GREAT corner window table look at the budding trees and main gates of PSU. Our server was very prompt and attentive during a very busy evening but we never felt rushed. The food is great, as always. The seafood nachos were a perfect start to our meal and I think the portions of the main course very generous. Coconut Cream pie, my favorite, completed an enjoyable evening. GREAT JOB SPATS!
This is our go to place whenever we visit our daughter at Penn State. Great food, wine and service!
Always try to have a meal at the Allen Street Grill when we’re visiting Penn State. This is the first time we’ve been there since it’s become Spats at the Grill. Still great ambiance with big windows overlooking College Ave. Nice, comfortable bar. Food was tasty. Liked the new offerings. We shared the bruschetta plate to begin, and then each had an entree salad. Great service. Definitely will return.
On a busy Parents weekend four of us had a wonderful leisurely meal with no pressure. Our meals were great-large portions. Eric, our waiter, was attentive but not bothersome. Very sociable. Overall, a lovely evening. Also, way better all the way around than our last visit soon after Spats joined the grill.
Went here for a late lunch on a Sunday after an awards ceremony for my son. Pretty glass room with a view overlooking Beaver ave. We had a table next to window. Service was unbelievable! Our waiter Chad was so friendly and attentive. My son got into his frat the day before and just found out that the following weekend was the frats parent weekend. We needed dinner reservations on a very busy state college weekend and everything was already booked. When Chad couldn’t help us he had the mgr Dan help us. Dan was just as friendly and attentive. He worked with us to get us in the following weekend. Food was delicious and service is above and beyond. Can’t go wrong here. Thanks again Chad & Dan!
Unfortunately, the night we were there, the A/C was broken. They didn't tell us until after we were seated, or we would have rated higher.
Great spot, friendly staff, excellent food. We eat here every time I am in town.
Great food! Never disappoints.
Reservation for 7:15 PM. Our server (Sophia) completely forgot about us, even though we were in the middle of her section. She visited tables on either side of us multiple times, and skipped us. All other tables received bread, except ours. Upon request, bread still took 20 minutes to arrive, even though we had been sitting for more than an hour, and in fact was delivered AFTER the food. The food itself was delivered an hour and a half after we ordered, and it came out cold...indicating it had been sitting there waiting to be delivered. I wouldn't be so angry, except that I've worked sit-down food service my whole life. Sophia, when you are in the weeds, ask for help, give someone else tables that you can't handle, and own up to your mistakes. A table will be much more understanding if you explain the situation, and take responsibility for the issues. Maybe get a manager to comp a meal or a dessert. I still tipped 25% because I know what that job is like, and I know what servers make. But since I didn't express my opinion on the tip line, I did here.
We had a fabulous dinner at Spat's. Service was impeccable. Wine list was extensive. The view, sitting above College Ave, can't be beat. The preparation of the meal was delicious. I would definitely recommend.
Spats at the Grill was a nice combination of the original Spats and classic Allen Street Grill. We were seated right at the window overlooking College Ave, which was the perfect State College experience. The food was delicious (especially almond crusted chicken), but we felt it was slightly overpriced ($30 for dirty jamabayla). Our waitress was personable and wonderful, but overall the service did take a long time (2 hours, not by choice). It was relaxing and homey, and I would go back!
We had a great experience. We had a limited time to eat because we needed to get to our daughter’s show. Our waitress was wonderful! She got our food to us quickly. Constantly refilled our drinks. And was very attentive. Food was good as well. We had a wonderful table with the perfect view of the campus gates.
I've had the catfish Po Boy before and I felt like it was pretty good. This time, it seemed a little more fishy than usual. My wife said hers was very fishy also and her bun seemed stale. The parm fries are good as long as you don't mind some salt. The berry cake was fantastic for dessert. The atmosphere and service were both good. They price is a little high for what you get.
Thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. Very pleasant sitting by a window. Food was very good and we enjoyed the diverse menu. Waitress understood we wanted to relax and paced our food accordingly
Always a treat
We had a great night at Spats at the Grill. The service was appropriately fast and since we had tickets to a show so that was important (and the location is great for downtown entertainment). Had wonderful salmon, and the fish tacos were tasty, but the Po' Boy sandwich was marginal. Drinks and wine delicious so overall a good evening!
AlwYs a treat
Family gathering and the grand parents loved the entire dining experience. Thank you Spats at The Grille! You never disappoint.
The food and service is always above average at the very least, and most of the time it is absolutely excellent! The duck breast meal is the best item on the menu in my not-so-humble opinion. If you want to have a little quieter experience, sitting at the back of the bar area works. However, being on the porch looking out over town is the best!
I love Spats - it is a unique offering in State College. Food was delicious as always, but meals didn't all come out at the same time to our table of four and the food was lukewarm.
I’ve celebrated Mardi Gras at Spats and now Spats and the grill for the past 5 years and always enjoy it. I will definitely come back next year. The sweet potato encrusted catfish with green beans and grits was amazing. The sassy French 75 and beignets were great too. However, the king cake was as hard as a rock; certainly not worth $7. I’ve learned not to order that in the future. It took awhile for the food to come out and service was slow, but they were very friendly and the Mardi Gras decorations were nice.
Perfect view, celebration feel, delightful dining experience in Happy Valley
