Thanh Do is a multi-cultural Asian restaurant. Here, guests can enjoy classic dishes from China, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan. The inside of the restaurant actually reflects the type of food being served in that not only is it of a distinct Asian influence, but there are several takeaways from American culture as well.
Chef and Owner Thom Pham has created a menu that celebrates all aspects of the culinary traditions of the people of Asia. The best way to order at Than Doh is to do so off of the wok menu. This allows guests to choose their protein and vegetables without having to commit to an entire dish. If guests don't want to order a wok entree, they can sample one of the many curry dishes available, like a cranberry curry or a Thai-style yellow curry. Finally, there are several Chinese classics like General Tsos chicken with fried rice.
The staff, especially those that answer the phone are extremely rude. The male staff that I have placed take-out with are short and cut customers off when trying to place orders. They have a reputation as being a RUDE staff and continue to live up to that consistently. For now on I'll be going across the street to the sisters place, Wok in the Park.
After 9 years of dining here regularly, I think I will try Wok in the Park next time. It keeps going downhill. Lots of confusion between hostess and servers on happy hour. Prices not the same online and in restaurant. My meal was mostly carrots.
As usual, the food is consistently excellent. Although our server was attentive and kept us updated about the delay with our entrees, it did take longer than usual for our meals to come out of the kitchen. This was on a Sunday evening; restaurant was moderately busy. Fortunately we were not in a rush and enjoying the company. This is one of our favorite places for consistently good food and would always recommend even if it takes a little longer some times.
Let me preface by saying that in 2010 we held our grooms dinner at Than Do for 35 people. EVERYTHING about our experience was fantastic! We have been going there several times/year since and it is/was our daughter's favorite. We were there Thursday night with our four adult kids. They were really really busy and we sat outside. Our wait staff was great: friendly and attentive. We could not believe how "off" the food was!
Steak Pad Thai - chewed and chewed the meat and had to spit it out and just eat noodles.
Cranberry Chicken - loaded with white onions - and I mean loaded - the chicken was stringy and the sauce not a good as prior visits (this is our favorite dish)
The Crab cake - first one came out room temperature - pre-made?. We sent it back and second one came out blackened on outside and this time luke warm.
Drinks - were delicious...refreshing (we did some cocktails)
Really shocked at the caliber of food when it is usually exceptional. Will we try again? Yes, but only one more time.
I have been going to this restaurant for 9 years. It was always my favorite when I lived down the street. I was really disappointed during this visit to discover several of the dishes have been removed from the menu, including my favorite Garlic Lover's. Also, all the traditional options that were kept from the original Kowloon restaurant have disappeared. My fried rice was good but I was sad to see it has been scaled down significantly.
Have never been disappointed here. It's a sure bet. My husband and I have enjoyed everything we've tried. They have great cocktails and a nice selection of beer too!
We try and make it to Thanh Do every so often. Never disappoints, food and service is very good and consistent. Probably some of the best egg rolls in the Twin Cities but a tad on the greasy side. Overall, though, we really like their food and quality. Highly recommend you at least give it a try if you're into Asian or Asian fusion type food.
it was not our first dinner here and the food was better before.
We still are going to come back and hope that the last visit was just a bad exception.
The food was really good but the service was a little slow. It seemed like there was not many servers on the floor, our server did a really good job considering how many table she had to manage. It is a small place, a large group not recommended unless it's slow time or you take over the entire restaurant. We had the Thai curry, Vietnamese noodle, oyster chicken wings, tuna tartar. Really good. Ginger martini was fabulous.
First of all, we were there 15 minutes early for our reservation so we only had to wait 5 minutes for a table. That was the highlight of the evening. We waited forever for our drinks, forever for our egg rolls (which were delicious by the way) and forever for our food (over an hour). We were seated at 7:05 and left at 8:30 after eating for 5 minutes before asking for to go boxes. On top of all that, the restaurant didn't check me in for my open table so I had to prove that I actually ate there. We won't go back.
We had a group of 4 friends. Menu selections are plentiful and food is fresh and delicious! Have not been at the bar, but it looks like a nice area to get together for drinks. I would go here again and again to try different menu items!
Came across this place searching on Opentable - looking for a new place to try near Hopkins. What a great find. May have driven by this strip center many time and would have never thought to go it. We got there at 5:30 and by 6:00 it was packed. Nice menu with many Asian flavor offerings. Settled on the recommendation of our server and had The Cranberry Curry - I will be going back regularly. It was delicious. Just a note, it was enough for 2 (with a second order of rice) Loved having the left overs!
Since this restaurant is near where we live, we will occasionally go here for dinner if we are feeling like Asian food. The appetizers are awesome - this time we had the sesame wings which were wonderful and really meaty. I ordered the stir fry this time, but was a little disappointed in that it seemed to have a lot of thickeners (corn starch?) in it rather than what a lighter Thai or Vietnamese stir fry might have. Other dish we ordered were the Korean bbq ribs which were delicious and meaty. Portions amazingly ample and we both took home doggie bags. Highly recommend Thanh Do and next time if I order stir fry would request less thickener to the sauce. The shrimp and veggies in the dish were perfect - fresh and crisp.
I was traveling in the area and read positive reviews of Thanh Do, so I decided to check it out. I was not disappointed. The saki selection was pretty good, so I got a saki flight to start things off. For appetizers, I tried the cranberry wonton puffs and the egg rolls. The wonton puffs have a rich, cranberry and cream cheese filling and a nice dipping sauce. The eggs rolls were unlike any I had seen before - longer, with thinner breading. This means that there is more good filling inside to enjoy and less fried dough. For my main dish, I couldn't help but order the cranberry curry. I'm glad I did. The sauce is excellent and makes the plate, but the onions and mushrooms were also very good. I ordered it with beef, and I'd recommend that as the beef is nice and tender. The service was friendly, too.
If I'm ever in Minneapolis again with the time, I'll make sure to stop back.
The egg rolls are the best and the beef and pots is a must have.
I went with my family (two adults and two teens) to Thanh Do on a weeknight. We had Steamed Buns and then four very different entrees (Orange Roughy Daily Catch, Cranberry Curry, Xanh, and Sesame Chicken). Everything was delicious! The server, Mike, was excellent! He is very knowledgeable and helpful. He gave us guidance about the various sections of the menu, the daily catch, and spiciness. His recommendations were perfect. The service was efficient, but not rushed. We will be going back soon.
Big fan of the red curry - spicy and flavorful. Vietnamese curry is also very flavorful.
I would also say the spanker soup is worth a trip here for!
Good heat and flavorful dishes. Solid saki selection.
We had dinner for my daughter's birthday and this place was wonderful. Great service, charming ambience and very good food. Very attentive staff. The noise level was low, the decor is cool and welcoming as were all the staff.
I felt very cramped sitting at the table on the wall. I think it's uncomfortable and hard to get in and out of the tables. If this restaurant would re model their tables, I would enjoy going in to dine more, but will probably just order To Go from now on.
We are big fans of Asian food, particularly Thai and Vietnamese, and have dined everywhere from San Fran CA to Duluth MN to London UK - and places in between. Thanh Do was an outstanding find. We enjoyed everything from our tasty appetizers (fresh spring rolls and tender calamari) to the spanker (coconut curry soup) and spicy lemon grass mock duck. The mock duck was among the best I have had, right up there with Boston and NY. The service was friendly and efficient. We will definitely be back.
Our dinner at Thanh Do was very good. The food was delicious--two vegetarian meals and one chicken-based dish. The atmosphere is ok; the division between the bar and restaurant is severe and makes both not very inviting. Also, the menu is difficult to read and make sense of. Our waiter was ok, but he was not very helpful in narrowing our choices.
I have been to your restaurant 4 times in the last year. The food is consistently good, but service this time was lacking this time for lunch. Something has definitely changed. Our waiter was very kind, but he was forced to be apologetic due to logistic issues at the restaurant. Ordering system was down and restaurant was not prepared for down time procedures (taking orders on paper). Subsequently, food coming out of the kicthen was very slow and it was apprarent our order got lost in the confusion as tables of similar size that arrived after our table of 6 received their food ahead of us.
Love the food. Excellent service. I'll definitely be back.
I picked the restaurant simply by chance and it turned out to be a fortunate choice. The service was excellent and our food arrived in less than 15 minutes after we ordered. The portions were generous and the quality was excellent. There were five of us and there was something on the menu for everyone (we all had different dishes.) The food prices were very reasonable. The place was busy but we were able to have normal conversation. I would go there again and recommend it highly to anyone who likes Asian food.
I love Thanh Do, not only does it have great Thai food, but they are adventurous and challenge expectations. On my most recent trip to Thanh Doh I tried the "Spanker" soup. It was DELICIOUS! It was spicy, yet layered and just overall amazing. I highly recommend it.
Pan Asian goodness. Great curries and helpful service.
We stumbled upon this place last Father's Day and really enjoyed it, and we came back for this Father's Day - ate outside and had the same server. Cranberry cream cheese puffs were unique and flavorful, Walleye with a light jalapeno basil sauce was fantastic, and the cranberry curry is a signature dish. Service from Mark was the right balance of attentive without being obtrusive. Well done!
We really enjoyed the food at Tom Pham's original restaurant. Love the cranberry puffs (have been consistently good since they opened a decade or so ago) and the food was spiced perfectly for our non-Minnesotan palates.
As a first-time patron, we felt we knew what to expect for the evening from prior Open Table reviews and yes, essentially what most of the reviews have report is accurate. The food is good; perhaps not as spicy as indicated on the menu but still very good.
The server knew her favorites and did have recommendations.
The host on duty was excellent and really made is feel like we had walked into our favorite restaurant where everybody knew our names.
There was a little too much noise for our liking and the restaurant was dark with a décor that was just.....well dark.
The outdoor seating appeared comfortable but road noise made it less than appealing.
Lunch combos include appetizer (recommend the spring rolls), soup (recommend either the egg drop or hot and sour soup), and an entree with rice (some up charge for brown or fried rice). Host and waiter were friendly. Nice decor. A nice restaurant gem in a strip mall.
Great food as always. Fresh flavorful great service who could ask for anything more!?!?
The food, wait staff and cocktails are fantastic. I love meeting my friends here for lunch or dinner!
This place is a real winner. We will be back for sure. Both my wife and I had curry dishes that had just the right amount of hot which for us was their lowest option at "medium" or 1 star. She got Cranberry Curry with chicken, vegetables, and fried rice while I got Chinese Curry with pork and fried rice. Had pork egg rolls which were great. I also tried lobster bisque on their daily special which I enjoyed. Two thumbs up!
My wife and I chose Thanh Do to celebrate Date Night. Our server was very professional and engaging but the food just fell flat. We ordered shrimp pad thai and honestly I think I found approximately six shrimps (small ones) in the entire dish. The food was just so so and there are lots of thai restaurants in Minneapolis so I most likely won't be going back to Thanh Do. They are for sure hiring the right folks in the front of the house now they just need to motivate and inspire the back of the house.
We love this restaurant- reliably great food & tremendous service.
We had reservations for 6:30 and were seated right away. We ordered drinks and I never received mine. After reminding our waitress, I soon got my club soda. We didn't see our waitress again until after our food came. My food was prepared wrong and she quickly took it back to be fixed. Again, we never saw the waitress. The table next to us didn't receive their food after waiting for about 45 minutes. The food was medioker. The service was slow and at times nonexistent. The water boys were always around to refill the water glasses, but a lot of times the servers were nowhere to be found. Maybe some of the water boys could have been servers...
usually make it a 3-4 times a month place to eat. When I made reservations for a special birthday night for our oldest son's 21st, thought it would be as good as always. Wrong, the waitress had an arrogance about her that I'm sure she would profess as urban cool, the vegie lo mein had a fishy taste which it does no normally have. We are the type of people who are kind to waiters/waitresses and tip 20% as a rule so not sure why no love connection. Maybe she thought we were going to be drinking a whole lot more? Who knows, but both my wife and I left feeling like the waitress might have done something to our food based on her demeanor alone and we were underwhelmed enough to not return and for me to actually take time to write this review.
We had a party of 9. Our server did not write down our orders. The server ended up forgetting someones order and i ordered soup which never arrived or acknowledged that it was missed.
I went to Thanh Do with 3 friends for dinner on a Sunday evening. None of us had ever been there before. The prices were reasonable, the serving generous. Huge menu, and unlike some places, all the dishes we tried had distinctly different flavors. Between the 4 of us, we ordered a few appetizers and 5 or 6 main dishes. There was plenty to take home. Everybody enjoyed the food.
The waiter was pleasant and reasonably timely. No absurdly long waits. We had a very pleasant evening. It was a little loud in there for me, but some people like it that way.
Wonderful place to go if you are looking for delicious ethnic food.
