Simple, Fresh, and Flavorful…are the three words that best describe all of Thally’s Modern American cuisine. Chef Ron Tanaka's menu items will change in accordance to what ingredients are perfectly in season at the time. You’re sure to find the freshest fish, savory meat, at least one robust vegetarian dish, unique salads and appetizers, and delectable soup. We also serve a rotating list of wines and craft beers, custom cocktails, house made sodas, and unique spirits in a comfortable 70 seat restaurant, which includes a 14 seat bar.
Our name pays tribute to our Shaw neighborhood as well as our families: “Thally” refers to the Tally-Ho Stables (built in 1883) located in Naylor Court directly behind our restaurant, as well as to Thalia, the daughter of General Manager & Co Owner Sherman Outhuok. (Thally is pronounced without saying the “h”, as in Tally-Ho.)

Thally Ratings and Reviews
Upstairs seating is cozy and quiet enough for conversation, which is a huge plus for me. Thally is a pretty place and I would go again for drinks and dessert if I was in the neighborhood. Excellent chocolate mousse and we also enjoyed the bread pudding ( it's a creative take but good!).
i have been to Thally a number of times and this was the worst experience i have had. We had an 8:30 reservation, when we arrived the host said that it was for 8:15 (false) and we would have to wait. We were not seated to 9:15. Once seated, it took some time for someone to take our drink and starter order. I'll stick to bar service only, if there is a next time.
Really enjoyed our meal at Thally! Came early and had a whiskey from an extremely well-stocked bar. The bartender recommended a wonderful Rye I can’t find anywhere else. Everyone’s food was delicious. The service was attentive but not hovering. The vibe was offbeat but not off-putting, with noise levels low enough to hold a decent table conversation while still sounding busy. Will definitely be back!
A very ho hum restaurant overall. The food was good, but not great. The best thing we ordered were the tomalitos which were scrumptious. I had the turkey burger, and the fries seemed over cooked while the hamburger was just so so. Not sure if I would go back as there was nothing really notable about the overall experience.
Nice, quiet neighborhood restaurant with wonderful attentive service. Loved that the chef brought out our entrees. The house wine was exceptional. My complaint is that the chef had a very heavy hand with the salt shaker. My companions rated their food average.
Amazing!!! Lee the bartender is phenomenal as a bartender and server. She guided us to the perfect drinks (2 different spicy tequila drinks) and also the butchers cut of the day. The cut was an outstanding pork chop. It was cooked to perfection paired with collard green and grits. What an amazing meal. I can not wait to come back and try other items on the menu.
Overall, it was great! Good drinks (loved the touch of grey cocktail!) and good food.
The only thing that kind of annoyed me was I ordered hush puppies, we then received complimentary hush puppies, but they still also gave us my original order without checking. It wasn't super busy, so it just would have been nice if the server had noticed we already ordered them, or asked if we still wanted the original order.
Thally is a must go to if you’re in town visiting, as my wife and I were. The atmosphere was quaint and felt like a local eatery. The food was amazing! Probably the best while we were in town. We had the SXSW as an appetizer and I had the hangar steak. Next time when I visit I will definitely be back.
Popular happy hour at the attractive and comfortable bar, with friends meeting up. A welcoming neighborhood atmosphere. The Chef's daily special creations of Fresh Catch and Butcher Block are innovative and always delicious. I had a lovely dish of perfectly seasoned sliced duck over butternut squash and kale, beautiful presentation. My friend had the shrimp and grits, a restaurant favorite. Service was great, we were well taken care of by Reese!
I had a wonderful man who served us and was both kind and entertaining. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. It is a cozy restaurant with a limited delicious menu. Our geoup enjoyed shrimp and grits, a pork schneitzel and roasted chicken. All yummy!
Both my friend and I were sick overnight after eating at Thally. We had vegetarian meals and they all tasted a bit off so we definitely did not clean the plates. The wine was so-so. Our server was attentive but with so many options in DC, I could not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Loved everything about it. The waiter was very well informed about even the many beers on the menu. It's a casual and attractively appointed room. My pork schnitzel was succulent and a hearty portion with a good bunch of arugula on top. A typical bargain for $19. How nice to find a restaurant where two can have dinner for under $100. This was a Sunday night and happy hour prices ($4 for draught beer) were in effect until 7:30. I'm definitely going to return.
Had an excellent Restaurant Week meal with the boyfriend. All three courses were great proportions and quite tasty. Only complaint is I think I got charged for a more expensive bottle of wine than I asked for and the wine was just okay. Good for a casual date night that's not too pricey.
Neighborhood Gem - Great food, incredible drinks selection, friendly and knowledgable staff and good value -what more could you want? FOOD - its good, honest food made with quality ingredients and some creative twists from the kitchen and nicely presented. DRINKS - A small but ever changing wine list of really interesting choices from around the world, an interesting list of ciders from around the world and a full bar, including one of the largest selections of whiskies - more than many so-called 'whisky bars'. And the owner/manager, Sherman, personally selects everything, visits vineyards and cideries and can give great recommendations. For something different, try the ciders - its an experience. SERVICE - all the staff are friendly and professional, and they know their product. After one visit, you'll get to know the staff and be greeted as a regular. PRICE - with nearly all entrees at less than $20 and good prices on the wines and ciders, this is great value for money. I find most places I eat in DC average $120pp incl tip with a decent, but not crazy, bottle of wine. Here, you're looking at less than 2/3 of that without having to be 'careful' about what you have. And in case it sounds like I'm related to or friends with the owner - I'm seriously not. I'm just someone who eats out a lot in DC and other cities around the world and appreciates good food and good service and good value. When I get tired of the 5 or more course tasting menus with ingredients you can't pronounce, stuffy service and high prices, but I still want good food and a fun evening out, this is where I choose to go. Highly recommend it - just don't take my table :)
This is a very good place to have a meal with friends and business associates in a quiet place in DC near convention center. My second time here in 12 months and the food is excellent. And the service is wonderful. Best Schnitzel I have had anywhere (including Germany). Highly recommended place in DC.
Great neighborhood spot! Terrific, friendly and knowledgeable wait staff. Great tacos of the day, food is tasty and interesting but not so weird you don't know what you are ordering. Thally seems to take advantage of local fare and beverage options, so you feel you are getting both local and seasonal flavor, plus a good deal. I love the ambience too -- it's a pleasant, happy (and not loud) place.
The food was great. Several of us had the Shrimp and Grits and we all loved it. They have a great cider selection, both by the bottle or in larger quantities. Everyone was pleased with the food they ordered. They have tasty drinks (try the Bees Knees) and the service was great. Its just down the street from the Cambria Hotel so it was perfect.
