It was fine.
My go-to place when I have to be in midtown. I don't even bother looking for a new place. Been going there for years and years. Never had the slightest negative experience. Staff is very friendly and always there when you need them. Wine selection is excellent. Even the wines by the glass are great. Food is very good. A tad higher priced than I'd like, but not terrible. Or I wouldn't keep coming back!
A reliable favorite in the theater district. Excellent for dining but also very groovy for post-theater drinks -- besides wine list and cocktails, there's a very tasty bar menu.
I am very upset. I made this reservation twice and confirmed the day of to mark my 15th anniversary. My Husband and had our first date at Thalia and it was 15 years to the day. Our reservation was for 11 and we got to the restaurant at 11. Our waiter came over to take our drink orders at 11:15 and then when he came back to the table he asked what he could get us. We said we would like to start with two appetizers and then wait on putting in our entree. He said he had to take the order now as the kitchen closed at 11:30. We were very upset, and told the waiter so. We then got up to leave and speak to the manager. The waiter indignantly said I told them 11:30 like I was told. The Manager then offered to keep the kitchen open - even though the cold stand had started to be broken down and we could see that they were already cleaning up. Who wants too order a rib eye steak with a kitchen that is closing? They should NOT have taken an order at 11:30. We just moved back to NYC, and I have a practice. Thalia has always been a standby for us, and we have had many dinners (over 40) since 2000 here. We will not be coming back or recommending this to anyone we know. I have a practice in Times Square and have many people who come to me who work in the area and theater industry. I have posted this to my Facebook and will tell everyone I come in contact with.
Excellent pretheater dinner Good food and great waitress. Busy but fun place!
We went there before seeing Kinky Boots. Half our party was delayed and the staff was so accommodating. The host and hostess were very nice. Food and service was great! Thanks!
We ate dinner there after Chicago. Our server was a little slow.
Service slow but food good.
Lousy service. The only person on the staff who showed they cared about us was a lovely busboy who did his best to make up for the other people who should have been helping us.
A little disappointed this time at Thalias. I go to this restaurant everytime before a Broadway show. This night we had 8 people and one server for an entire section of the restaurant. They were out of the foods we wanted - lobster mac & cheese, oysters from west coast, strip steak...Great service at first but then he got too busy and we couldnt get his attention when we needed it. Just wish they would have more help on nights when there are Broadway shows to help out...And maybe have enough food to feed everyone! Our dinner was at 5:30 so it wasn't like we were there at the end of the night!
I went to this restaurant for my birthday with my mother. She asked for dressing on the side of her salad and another glass of wine and it took 30 minutes.
I have been dining at Thalia since it opened and have seen many changes. The problem with my last brunch is that management put a table for two directly in the path of the wait staff where there was not enough room to pass. My guest was constantly moving her chair to let the staff through a very narrow space, making the meal much less enjoyable. She finally moved her chair to a different side of the table, inconveniencing the party next to us. Poor arranging.
Excellent service 2nd date 4 me & love of my life had same seats as 1st date
Love this restaurant! Been going for there for years...always try to eat at thalia whenever I'm in NY.
Thalia is most convenient to theaters nearby. Though crowded we were seated immediately. The oysters and spicy tuna (really spicy) were fresh and fine. We ordered mussels which were too salty. Wines by the glass were good at TD prices. We were not rushed and the service was very good.
This is a nice, upscale attractive convenient place for a pre-theater dinner. The food and presentation was above average, though the salad was plain and dressing too vinegary, and the very small bread was served cold. The service was very attentive. I believe Thalia deliberately misleads Open Table customers and those viewing their website. For one, the Prix Fix 3 course deal 5-7pm is listed at $32, it clearly states "not valid on holidays". It is actually $36, and not offered on Saturdays, which is written nowhere on the menu or website. We liked the Prix Fixed menu, this was the sole reason we chose this restaurant because we are on a budget and we ended up spending nearly double of what we planned with $34 entrees, $13 soups and side salads, $10+ desserts. Also, the actual prices are 15-20% higher than those listed on the web site. While we did enjoy the location, food and service, the restaurant deceived us and it was not the good value we expected.
Service was not good
The food is always on point. The servers go out of their way to keep customers satisfied...not always easy in the heart of touris-local Theatre District! Thalia is our go-to every-day celebration spot! Keep it going!
I've been here several times. It was a perfect location as we were going to the theater across the street. The waiter was very nice but service/kitchen was very slow. We had gotten there with plenty of time, but were rushing at the end to get to the show. I will chalk it up to the kitchen and will return, but hoping the timeliness of the service is better next time
Waiter very good, a different fellow who actually delivered the food was lousy.
Excellent food, service and ambiance
Though we weren't eating pre-theater this time, Thalia is a great pre-theater location and meal. And though the bar area is noisy, the decibels drop considerably in the restaurant, especially after the theater crowd leaves. Our group of two couples had a booth tucked in the back corner, reserved for us in response to our request for "a quiet spot, please." Our dinner servings were generous -- seafood stew and squid ink capellini, both chock full of seafood. I give Thalia four stars because for its type of restaurant -- good solid everyday fare -- it's very good.
Came for my anniversary before seeing lion king on broadway and loved it! It’s perfect for before a show because it’s just a few blocks away from all the theaters...they even have a pre-theater fixed menu!!! The seafood was really fresh and delicious. Definitely want to come back
Wonderful place, great service and food. Running out of iced tea at lunch?? Only reason it's not five stars.
Good sushi. Good drinks. Close to all in midtown!!
Have walked by this restaurant many times, but this is the first time I went there for a meal. I ordered ravioli, but they were out of it and it was only 5:15! There were three of us and all of our food was luke warm when served. While the waitress was pleasant, she was not attentive. Never stopped by to find out how everything was. With so many options in this area, this would be low on my list of choices.
Was perfect for pre-theatre. The service was prompt (though slightly surly) and the food was very good. It wasn't too heavy. The path was excellent, and the shrimp superb!
Just a pleasant nice experience We go there often for brunch and lunch. Great location for theater and some museums.
Good food and drinks. Swift service. Accommodating for a group of 10. Convenient within the theater district. Overall a very good experience.
We went to Thalia a few times several years ago and enjoyed it, but had a much different experience this time.
Food: The appetizer of polenta and mushroom fricassee was very flavorful. The polenta was on the cool side for something freshly plated, but very tasty.
My companion's frittata was OK. The slice of mozzarella was obviously added after the frittata had cooled - it could have used some melting/integration into the dish.
My burger should have been medium rare, but was medium well/well done. There wasn't a touch of pink in it. The patty was well formed, and the meat flavorful, but this was not cooked to my order at all.
But worst was the fries. They were old and stale and hard. If they were fresh cut and made to order, they would have had a fresher texture and potato flavor. If they were frozen and dropped in the fryer they would have been crispy. These fries, however, smacked of someone who had made a large batch and then set them aside under a warmer. I could have gone to Chevy's and been happier. These were inedible.
Service was OK, not outstanding. The waiter did tell me they'd let the manager know of my issue, and gave me a cappuccino to go. So - where's the manager coming to apologize? I mean, these were seriously the worst fries I've had at any restaurant, including the Sonic by the Lincoln Tunnel and the Denny's at that truck stop in NC that smelled like disinfectant.
Ambiance - signs of decay breaking through at this well designed space. Broken candles not replaced, window sills not dusted to the corners... This is a once-great place that needs to figure out how to take pride in itself again.
The sirloin burger was delicious. I am gluten free, so keep my food simple and whole. I tried to get the blackened tuna salad minus the blackened, but it’s pre-made, so I couldn’t. The menu is the menu. I was, however able to get my burger with no bun. My wife’s salad was nicely dressed, fresh, and had a good ratio of “stuff” to lettuce. At brunch, you get a free cocktail, which was nice. Also it’s right around the corner from the Gershwin, so it’s very convenient.
Very poor service. I’ve been there many times but will not come back. Waiter tried to get my dish before I finish, the tip was included in the total bill instead of giving me the option to decide the service charge.
Food was ok but it has been better in the past.
The music was inappropriate and turned too loud for the type of restaurant. It made it very difficult to talk at the table. The food was good but ruined by the atmosphere. The bathrooms were also filthy with no paper towels. It was a busy night but the management should make sure that they are intermittently cleaned.
My friend and I went to Thalia after our matinee. Got there a little too early, but very comfortable bar seating. Service not too good, didn't take our drink orders until we asked twice, brought us our salad without dressing, brought me the wrong entree. Mistakes were corrected quickly, but they were annoying. Food, however, was really great, especially the sesame crusted ahi tuna.
Saturday brunch before a show. They have a great Bloody Mary and food was good. Our server was the highlight- he was great and super personable.
Anniversary and Birthday celebration! Great choice! Great waiter and very attentive to wants and needs. Both had starters of Lobster bisque soup, forewarning had corn in the soup, unusual but nice textural touch. Husband had Seafood choipino which was well prepared and executed. Nice selection of calimari, shrimp, clams, and mussels in a wonderful broth with crusty bread for dipping . Yum! Also had the seafood risotto ,well prepared but could have added a bit more seafood. Overall a wonderful meal and night before a theater performance.
The food was exquisite as always, the Spicy Tuna Tartare and Roasted Beet Salad apps were spot on and the wine list is wonderfully diverse.
The food was delicious. We went for lunch and was still able to choose brunch options. I got a burger, its was made to perfection, but I think Ill also try the eggs benedict next time
Lovely pre-theatre Sunday brunch. Food was delicious and service was great!
Service was not very good for a quiet day. While the attendant tried his best, he was certainly with too many tables. The food was not special and drinks were poor. The french wine was undrinkable and remained on the table and the manager never came to check. Overall a bad experience.
