My girlfriend and I went for her birthday dinner and the food was amazing! We went pre-theater, and our waiter made sure to get us out in plenty of time!
I have been to Thalia many times in the past as I’ve always liked the convenience of the location for various things. On this particular Sunday evening, our waitress started off great!
She wrote down every request we made (there were 4 of us) in our various orders. However, twice we had to ask for more table water. The burgers came out wrong for 2 of the people.
We had a hard time tracking down the bus boy. Again, our waitress was very good - and I don’t want to belittle her service in any way. It was the rest of the crew that left a lot to be improved.
Food was very good. Our Waiter was wonderful. Pre-Theater dining and there was no rush to get us out.
I’m sure the food for dinner might be good but brunch is subpar at best. My boyfriend ordered the avocado toast and it was literally 1 piece of untoasted toast (bread) with sliced avocado for $18 and luckily he ordered the 2 eggs for extra $3 or he’d have been starved upon leaving. I had the omelet which was just ok. Not much flavor. Easily made for much less at a diner. Service was ok as well but food was slow coming out.
Great food. The restaurant was really crowded and we were able to be seated at the bar for our dinner instead of having to wait for our reservation. Great service and accommodation!
Dinner and Broadway, table for 2. Attitude from waiter was unnecessary, as if he was inconvenienced to get us in and out in time for our show. Several rude comments including telling us to “come earlier next time” as we left.
Food was very good, but three course pre-fixe was unavailable on weekends even though it was on the menu we were given (caption said “not available on holidays” but nothing about weekends); they need to add that note or create a version without it listed.
I won’t be back when they are busy, too many great options in the neighborhood that would happily seat and serve us for a pre-show meal to be given an attitude by someone who knows nothing of our busy schedule.
Pre theater. As good as the rest. In and out
While my wife had ravioli that were good, I sent my ciapino back as it was over cooked and inedible. The general manager did attempt to make it right and did not charge me for my dinner, that was not the only issue we encountered. After we were seated at a small table next to stairs, they proceeded to bring another table next to us so that we were separated by less than a foot of space. I literally had to move the table so that my wife could get up to leave and not bump into the table next to us. All of this with reservations that had been noted as date night. In general I could not recommend this place to anyone at all.
my new favorite local dinner spot! best meal we've had out in a long time. our server was very polite, accommodating, and let us enjoy and take our time on a pretty busy Friday evening. definitely going back soon.
Please hire more servers.
We had to go to the host stand to get our check...which included a drink that we ordered and never received.
Thalia is located on Eighth Avenue in Manhattan, and is accessible to many Broadway theatres. The staff is efficient, and always prepared to help patrons finish their meal before curtain time.
The Pre-Fixe dinner available during the week is very good.
They will get you out in time for a show. But the tables are close together so expect to be bumped by waiters etc
Skip it - dirty and terribly understaffed
Thalia never disappoints...This was a business dinner with people from Dallas and Milan, Italy. Everything was great as usual...We started with two dozen oysters and two orders of Burrata for the table...For dinner several people had steak and I had the pan seared scallops. At he end of dinner they said to me, "when we come back to NYC in 3 months you must take us here again."
I have been to Thalia many times and always enjoy my meal. The food and srvice were very good. I had over ordered and ate only half of my main dish. I asked to take the remainder home. My waitress packed it for me and placed it on the table. I then forgot to take it with me. I sent my son back in to get it, and he was told that they had thrown it away. Usually a restaurant will hold it, maybe at the front in case the customer returns. I was very disappointed that they had not held it for a few minutes in case we did return.
Ordered the skirt steak which was served lukewarm with cool mashed potatoes. However, I was pressed for time And did not complain. My friend’s duck was excellent.
Great for pre theater and nice bar to hang out
Service slow at first but picked up and food was delicious.
Everything was good at Thalia except they did not have our reservation - even though I had received a confirmation on line and had the copy of the confirmation with me. Luckily, our reservation was at 4:30pm so they had no trouble seating us. This is the first problem I have had with an Open Table reservation and I hope it is the last time.
Property the worst service I’ve ever had in the city. Dirty plates left on all the empty tables and it was pretty crowded. It took forever to get waiter every time, check etc. And this is in the theatre district where people are always in a rush. Food was “eh”. Ever the soda was flat and bad.
we used to like this place.
we go pre-theater.
service was not good. he did not know the menu
we kept having to ask for help
food looked better than tasted
The food was delicious and our server was great. The ambience left much to be desired, however. We had a reservation, and were led to the very back of the restaurant. Curtains were draped over some of the tables and it was very dark in the back corner. It felt like we'd been forgotten and stuck there. The cocktail list was nothing like what we saw online and we were very disappointed with the cocktails.
The food, however, was so good that I'll say so twice. Would love to visit again if the cocktail menu is re-revamped!
Upbeat and fun. Great service and menu. Attentive to our Broadway play schedule.
I went there after a matinee with my son. I had been there a few times over the last ten years and enjoyed it. The food and the service were still pretty good but the place looks a bit run down. It needs a little TLC.
I have friends who frequent the bar here and I have met them a number of time for drinks and light eats at the bar, which is always great. I hadn't eaten dinner here in a while and was quite disappointed. The restaurant area was actually quite shabby and is in need of some sprucing up. There was thick dust on the window sills next to where we sat, old wall hangings and other things piled up in nooks here and there, the bathrooms looked run down...just overall lacking. The food was just ok and did not live up to my memory.
The service was chaotic and slow, the food just ok. The prices are not out of synch with the area but I've gotten much more for my money from similarly located restaurants.
Great pre-show meal! Food was excellent. Service was a bit slow as they were under staffed; however, the wait staff was very pleasant and efficient.
The reason for the low score for service: When I made the reservation I notified them that we has someone in our party that was having a birthday and I wanted to surprise them. I called the night before to confirm the reservation and remind them of the birthday. The reservation was confirmed and I was told they already had noted my request on the initial reservation and they would bring dessert with a lit candle and staff would sing. When we arrived they had no record of our reservation. We were seated fairly promptly and while we waited I reminded the hostess of the birthday. After we were seated I discreetly reminded our waitstaff of the birthday with another reminder prior to ordering dessert. After 5 total reminders, guess what - NOTHING was done. Birthday request forgotten and ignored. We traveled from out of state for this special celebration - what a disappointment!
I always eat here.....not anymore. Worst service. Not accomodating. Too many places with equally good food who are happy to accomodate requests, not screw up orders between tables and check on their diners. So long Thalia
This is my favorite pre-theater brunch spot
Thalia is a reliable pre-theater dinner spot. The menu is well-executed and has enough variety to satisfy most tastes. Our visit on Friday 3/23 was below average mainly due to the unusually poor service. Our waiter didn't show up to take our drink order until we'd been seated for 20 minutes, then he feigned ignorance over the "new" drink menu. If the host can hand out a drink menu that has a list of $17 signature cocktails, there's really no excuse for the waiter not being aware.
The food and service were excellent. I have always had good meals at Thalia. Highly recommended.
I used to frequent Thalia many years ago... I had always loved it— a solid wine list (specifically an impressive wines-but-the-glass selections) and the food was always very good.
This time— after not being there for several years— it felt like I was in a different restaurant. Service was poor (uneducated about their menu and wine list), the restaurant was dirty (dust on picture frames, old paint etc...) and the food was average at best.
I don't know what has happened, but this experienced saddened me. I won't be returning.
It was fine.
My go-to place when I have to be in midtown. I don't even bother looking for a new place. Been going there for years and years. Never had the slightest negative experience. Staff is very friendly and always there when you need them. Wine selection is excellent. Even the wines by the glass are great. Food is very good. A tad higher priced than I'd like, but not terrible. Or I wouldn't keep coming back!
A reliable favorite in the theater district. Excellent for dining but also very groovy for post-theater drinks -- besides wine list and cocktails, there's a very tasty bar menu.
I am very upset. I made this reservation twice and confirmed the day of to mark my 15th anniversary. My Husband and had our first date at Thalia and it was 15 years to the day. Our reservation was for 11 and we got to the restaurant at 11. Our waiter came over to take our drink orders at 11:15 and then when he came back to the table he asked what he could get us. We said we would like to start with two appetizers and then wait on putting in our entree. He said he had to take the order now as the kitchen closed at 11:30. We were very upset, and told the waiter so. We then got up to leave and speak to the manager. The waiter indignantly said I told them 11:30 like I was told. The Manager then offered to keep the kitchen open - even though the cold stand had started to be broken down and we could see that they were already cleaning up. Who wants too order a rib eye steak with a kitchen that is closing? They should NOT have taken an order at 11:30. We just moved back to NYC, and I have a practice. Thalia has always been a standby for us, and we have had many dinners (over 40) since 2000 here. We will not be coming back or recommending this to anyone we know. I have a practice in Times Square and have many people who come to me who work in the area and theater industry. I have posted this to my Facebook and will tell everyone I come in contact with.
Excellent pretheater dinner Good food and great waitress. Busy but fun place!
We went there before seeing Kinky Boots. Half our party was delayed and the staff was so accommodating. The host and hostess were very nice. Food and service was great! Thanks!
We ate dinner there after Chicago. Our server was a little slow.
