I grew up in the area, so I've seen a lot of restaurants come and go around University Avenue. There's a reason Thaiphoon stays when so many (often really good) restaurants have fallen. They make seriously great food. Whenever I come back for a visit, my family and I always make a point of going to Thaiphoon. I do have some menu items I especially like, but I've yet to be disappointed by a new menu item. This place is the best.
Spicey eggplant didn't have much eggplant, prawn dishes skimpy on prawns. Mediocre Thai cuisine.
Fair food. Not bad, not great. Fine service. There are probably better options in the area.
The food at this restaurant is good. The curries are the best I've eaten in the area. The decor is getting old and needs to be updated. Some of the servers are good others not.
Good food but not great service
How can I return to a restaurant when the service is so terrible? After we ordered our food our server never returned. Someone else brought the food, but no one stopped by to see if we needed anything. We had to flag down another server to order more rice, to have our water glasses filled, to get back the cork for the wine bottle we brought but did not finish, and to ask for the check. (We also filled our own wine glasses, which does not bother me as it's better then their constantly overfilling them, but when I spend $15 corkage at an inexpensive Asian restaurant that has a small, lousy wine list (with no vintages listed) anyway I should be getting something for my money.) The food we like but there is no point eating it there.
Pretty good Thai but...food very slow arriving--one dish came 5-6 minutes before others. Pad Thai was great but the lamb in the lamb curry was very tough, almost needed a knife. Surprised the bill arrived before we were even asked about dessert. Ran out of the Stella draft (only one of two for a Thai restaurant?)
We went to Taiphoon for a birthday with the family.
We had to wait for nearly 30 minutes to be seated even though we had a reservation.
Then the service was quite quick and friendly.
The food was good but not exceptional.
The restaurant was very noisy in the beginning due to a couple of big parties, but quieted down after they left.
My takeaway: avoid at peak times
Not impressed with the food at all. Their Shaken Beef was way too tough, and mango chicken was just OK.
Not planning to return.
Americanized Thai food but very good quality. Having lived in Thailand 6 years I was hoping for more authentic dishes but most Americans probably don't want that. Som Tom was lacking but the waiter warned me in advance it would not be authentic. It was packed on a weeknight so obviously the locals know it's good. No complaints from me.
Made a reservation and they kept us waiting for over 1hr. Worst of all, when I asked about it we received incredibly bad service to the point we decided to leave.
The person who took our orders was not pleasant, she snapped when asked about ingredients. She kind of spoiled everyone's mood.
The food was disappointing, kind of bland. We were especially upset because we told the waitress one person was allergic to red peppers or soy sauce and she wrote that on our check but both dishes came with those ingredients.
Quiet location to meet friends. My friends and I were looking for a Thai place, and this was one of the suggestions. Thaiphoon is a delicious place to dine with lots of options for everyone.
So disappointing. "Veggie" coconut soup was just carrots, mushrooms, and white bok choy with very little flavor. Lemongrass chicken very blah with no lemongrass flavor. Pot-stickers too greasy with only plain soy sauce accompanying them. Other dishes equally poor. Definitely does not deserve more than 3 stars except for nice outside seating (if you get there early). Very poor Thai food dining choices on the Peninsula which is why we tried Thaiphoon. Had eaten there years ago and was disappointed but gave them another try. Shouldn't have bothered.
Great food and service for a group of 5. We ate family style and tasted a lot of dishes.
The noodle with beef in soup is the best one I have ever had at other Thai restaurants. Also the iced coffee after the noodle in soup was great.
A few dishes are great...chicken satay, green curry chicken. Several dishes were extremely salty or heavy with garlic or thai basil. Pork arrived way overcooked
Food is good but bland. Ask people how spicy they want their dish. Not everyone wants it mild! Be more adventurous with seasonings.
The food was bland, boring, and tasteless. It was subpar Thai food and we both thought every dish was disappointing. The service was only okay. We won't be back. There are way too many good thai restaurants to frequent this one again.
We go to thaiphoon about every 6 weeks. The food and drinks are great. The service is generally poor. We waited 20 minutes for a menu on this visit. I waiver between "I'm never going back" and "it was worth the wait". One more person on their evening wait staff might make a world of difference.
best pad see yew i have ever eaten, and I have eaten a lot of it. a little chilly in there, otherwise great service and delicious food
waitress did not want to take Open Table "check" for payment. Manager said ok but was embarrassing with our guests there, also
On a not very busy night, we were seated quickly. We then waited at least 5 minutes for a menu. After ordering drinks, it took 15 minutes for them to come, and only then were we allowed to order dinner. Once our order was placed, it was another 40 minutes before we were served. That means it took one hour from the time we arrived until the time we were served. The food was great, but the entire experience was ruined by the dismal service. Won't go back. Carry out, maybe.
Love the food, but don't enjoy having to wait 20 minutes for a menu and another 20 to have our order taken. Kind of puts a damper on the whole experience. The chef deserves better wait staff to complement his great cuisine.
very enjoyable. right on time for our reservation even though the restaurant was busy.
This was the worst dining I've had in a very long time. First, I made reservations for 7 people and they tried to seat us at a booth for 4. We had to wait an additional 25 minutes for them to seat us at an appropriate table. Our waitress was the worst. She did "drive bys" our table. She'd take one person's drink order and then run, literally, away without taking everyone else's. One person in our party was a vegetarian, so we ordered 2 vegetarian dishes. Twenty minutes after the other dishes arrived, his still hadn't. We inquired twice about those dishes and they never appeared. I had to get up from the table and insist that our waitress go into the kitchen and get our orders. The food was just mediocre.
