I wanted to like the place. The food was decent but nothing out of this world. We ask for a tonic with lime and they said they can't serve it though they do serve gin and tonics. Service was acceptable. When I received the check I was asked to pay cash. They said the machine runs slow when it rains. I didn't have the cash so gave a card. They came back pretty quickly so I don't know. Overall for thai/sushi I thought it ran on the expensive side. I'm from the NY area so I wasn't expecting it to be cheap but I was surprised. I would consider getting pad thai to go but not a sit down meal again.
Good sushi but not the best I've eaten in DC. Fresh
The food was good and there was a nice variety. Everything tasted fresh and well prepared. Service was a bit inattentive except for keeping drinks topped off. The venue was a little noisy for such a small space. Overall, not a bad dining option; I'd return again sometime.
Friendly service, great food and good happy hour deals on drinks and sushi.
When I researched this place, the place seemed to be bigger in pictures but once I got there it definitely was small and you were right on top of the people/couple next to you. There really wasn't any real personal space for a date. I wouldn't recommend this place for a date night but more so friends hanging out.
Bland food + rushed and inattentive service = no going back.
Good news is it was cheap
The service was very slow, but the food was pretty good all in all
Service is rather rude. Food is great though
Best spicy basil eggplant I've ever had. Good portion size- not too big, not too small. Excellent spice level. Would definitely go back.
Good selection of reasonably priced sushi, sushi rolls, and Thai standards. Generous portions, usually quick service and fast kitchen, consistent quality. Solid neighborhood standby.
We had friends in town who are vegetarians. Thai Chef had a great selection of classic Thai dishes and sushi. Prices were very reasonable and the portions were large. Service was great and fast.
Delicious and lots of great choices. Waitress was very friendly and quick.
Food was great.
Nice place. Great food. Quick service. Friendly environment.
Nice informal restaurant with good food and friendly service
Always love the food here.
Sat the bar. Good sushi. I'm from California where good sushi flows like water so toe this was average. Good value though and in great little neighborhood.
Sent to Thai Chef because I wanted a SE Asian dinner after a lecture on the area's art and kingship at the Smithsonian. Wasn't too hungry, so stayed with the appetizers and salads: Mee Krob, Beef Satay, and Papaya Salad. Finished as everyone should with Mango and Sticky Rice. Service was friendly and attentive, although I suspect that in the nearly empty restaurant I was seated at a table next to a lingering couple to encourage them to leave. Since I was listening to the Nats on my Walkman, I wasn't inconvenienced by their conversation.
My kids and I love this place. Some of us always want sushi and some want thai, so it works out perfectly. The food is consistently quite good (my son is a pad thai connoisseur and thinks theirs is great and the Dragon Roll is AMAZING) and the service is friendly and attentive. Prices are reasonable. Noise level varies, but is manageable. The dining room isn't exactly romantic, but it's comfortable. We're regulars there.
The fish was warm and mushy
The food was good, but there was a uniformity of flavors. We ordered 3 different items and within a note or two of flavor, things had a certain sameness to them. which is not to say it wasn't tasty. Broths in the soups and other broth dishes were the same. Did not have any of the sushi offereings
Went here for a very special occasion, and I could sense that the place was not right as soon as I walked in and was seated.
We sat next to some rather chatty people, and you can overhear each others conversation. However, the food is very, very good and the prices were excellent for its location in the city. Upon leaving, I felt as if I just had a good meal instead of celebrating a special occasion.
So, I highly recommend if you are just hanging out, ordering sake, and enjoying various cuts of sushi and Thai dishes. The food, coupled with the music, is pretty good.
My boyfriend and I LOVE this place -- it's our go-to restaurant when we want sushi and/or thai food. The happy hour deals are fantastic -- discounted sushi plus fun drinks like pina coladas, daquiris, appletinis, and others.
Great happy hour deal & fresh sushi! Was stuffed & could barely finish my 2nd roll. The margaritas & warm sake are tasty & there's some flaming chicken dish that smells amazing & looks really fun for the whole table. Need to go back so I can try it!
Very cute spot and great if you want Asian fusion food. The food was pretty good but when I want Thai I want Thai not creative Thai. I love authentic Thai so this just wasn't the spot for me.
We almost walked out...the seating is very cramped,it is noisy, cafeteria like..
So glad we stayed. The Thai food is really Thai and the sushi is fresh and tasty. The best dish was shrimp drunken noodles.
The drinks were great,too.
The Cosmo martini was surprisingly perfect! The food was good; my friend ordered dumplings that were very different than what she expected.
Fair price, melt in your mouth fish. The winter whitefish tuna sashimi was yummy! Tempura was flavorful, the rainbow roll was great to share. Oh and the spicy salmon crunch roll was really terrific, did not expect such a simple roll to taste so good! Absolutely will return.
It's a convenient place in DuPont area, and for a quick casual taste of Thai or sushi in a plain space, it's fine. The tuna roll I ordered was dingy, sort of looked old (ginger was salmon colored), but I know it was freshly made and it tasted fresh (the chefs are standing at the sushi bar near front windows). We did enjoy the assorted appetizers. The seafood green curry had a nice rosewater flavor. Price was reasonable, service pleasant, it just wasn't relaxing.
We stopped into Thai Chef and Sushi Bar for a light dinner that consisted sushi and the spicy papaya salad. The sushi was good, but not outstanding. The noise level (during happy hour) was also very high; it was a very lively place that would probably be appealing to a younger crowd.
The sushi is amazingly good . The service is also excellent but the Thai food is mediocre to poor in my opinion. Whenever I tried the Thai options I was disappointed and/or completely grossed out (by the soup-ew). I would only come here for sushi, but for that, I would come visit every week! Sushi is fresh, inexpensive, and most importantly, delicious!
Enjoyed the Crying Tiger appetizer and spicy pork stir fry. While I prefer Passara Thai a few block south on Connecticut Avenue because It's nearer to my condo and has Nam Sod, the minced pork appetizer I've loved since encountering it at the late lamented Thai Room forty years ago, I'm glad Thai Chef has survived.
Happy hour drinks are great and so are the sushi rolls! Smaller space but the food is great and so are the drinks. Highly recommended.
I dined here on a Saturday night this past weekend with three other people for a double date, and overall it was an okay dining experience. My friends got some $4 drinks and cheap sushi rolls before happy hour ended at 7pm. I personally came here to try the Thai food, so I ordered the chicken pad see ew (broad rice noodles with sweet soy sauce, black bean paste, broccoli with your choice of meat/seafood/tofu). It was delicious!! Also tried their papaya salad and although it wasn't the best I've had, it was pretty good. I would recommend this place for the Thai food.
In terms of the room and space, I do agree that it was very cramped. My friend who was sitting on the booth side of the table had to constantly keep moving over when people came to the table next to us and since there was not much space, I had to put her purse on my chair. I would say it's only good for parties of two or three max.
Everything that we ordered was incredible. The appetizers, the meals, even the drinks. The only problems we had were the service staff not being very approachable, and the place was super cramped. The first negative, the service staff. We ordered our drinks, and the waitress forgot to put it in, then when we reminded her, she forgot to pick them up after they were ready. That could be forgivable if she wasn't just hanging out with her coworkers at the hostess stand or wherever. The restaurant was busy, but it wasn't packed. There was an empty table for four next to us the whole time we were at the restaurant. As for being super cramped, you would have thought this was almost family style seating we were so close to the tables on either side of us. Even talking softly meant that the other tables around you could hear everything you were saying.
Lack luster. Menu didn't list all main ingredients which lead to sending a course back. Sushi was a B-.
Thai noodle dish was fine.
The food was very good and I would certainly highly recommend for Thai and sushi . The place itself was a bit understated and not necessarily a special night out dining experience but the service and food quality could make it a regular go to for dinner. Fair priced and good value.
The food is decent, but the restaurant is a bit too dark. Had a hard time seeing my food and the person I was with.
I am a sucker for a good happy hour and this place nailed it. $4 cocktails that were definitely worth it on flavor and effectiveness. I had the lycheetini and thought it was absolutely delicious. We ordered a seaweed salad, rainbow roll, maryland roll, and a dynamite. They were all awesome and I would definitely order them again. The three rolls were plenty for the two of us and only came out to about $25 each! Awesome sushi, delicious drinks, and a competitive price. I'm sold!
The food was amazing since this is my second meal here. However, we were in a huge group, 14 total, when some of my friends arrived early and checked in, the person on the front of the restaurant, who happened to be the manager, gave them an attitude. Our server apologized for him and give my friends a free meal voucher.
