I brought my friends to Teske's today to introduce them to my favorite German restaurant in San Jose. Unfortunately, after this experience, I will never be going back. To start off, we found mold on the bread that was brought to our table. One of my friends politely gave it back to one of the servers, but later on when he was asked how everything was, he honestly told our waitress that we are not happy with being brought moldy bread. A couple minutes later, a bald waiter (or maybe manager?) came to our table and started lecturing us about how we should behave in his restaurant, and that we should be nice and not make a fuss about bread. He started explaining that they changed bakeries recently, and so it's not their fault—but somehow it's our fault? He offered no apology, berating us quite loudly for daring to point out the mold. (Not that this should matter, but we are all over fifty. It was really quite shocking that he felt he had the right to lecture us as if we were disruptive children.) Maybe we should have left then, but my friends wanted to stay and try to salvage the evening. Next, our waitress forgot to bring one of the beers we ordered. We had to remind her several times about it, until she finally brought a beer—but not the one that was ordered! I feel so ashamed to have brought my friends here. The food was OK, maybe too salty for my taste, but I was very upset at that point and couldn't have enjoyed it anyway. We all tried to make the best of it and enjoy each other's company. As we were leaving, the same bald man (he never introduced himself, so I have no idea who he is, or what his name is, even though I know that he's been working there for a very long time, as I've seen him there before) told one of my friends, that she needs to teach her "boyfriend"—he's her husband—how to be nice in restaurants, how to behave. It was the last straw to a terrible evening. We will never come to that restaurant again, nor recommend it.
Services very slow 2.5 hours to have dinner.
Some parts of the meal were almost inedible; the 'carrot bisque' tasted chemical, the salad was barely dressed, the venison stew I had ordered was too tough to chew, and so was my husband's goulash. This is not sophisticated fare but a little care in execution would go a long way. Good place for Oktoberfest, but I can't recommend the food. Service was friendly and efficient, though.
Authentic German. Worth a regular visit. Ain't nothing like it within 100 miles.
Authentic German food, huge portions. Excellent service. Delicious and fun.
Great food, great service!
Went with my daughter and her friend after the theatre. Nice thing about it is that the entrees include soup, salad, and apple strudel for dessert. After asking about vegetarian options (the only being the mushroom ravioli, which were very good), the waitress mentioned to my daughter's friend, who is vegetarian, that the soup was made with meat broth, and offered instead a double salad.
The soup, split pea, was a bit thin, with a slightly watery flavour. The salad was bland, and didn't seem to have a dressing. The entrees were very good, the ravioli well seasoned and flavourful. My veal was a bit tough, but the red cabbage was excellent, as was the gravy and pasta. The apple strudel was ok, except too 'americanized' with the goupy filling.
A very enjoyable experience.
We came on a Saturday evening and made a reservation. We were seated quickly and our drinks came quickly.
Of note: there are a series of courses, "it can take up to an hour and a half for a full service." We read this disclaimer online, and planned accordingly. It did indeed take about 1 1/2 hours from soup to strudel. The food was tasty. Interesting beer & wines from Germany are available. I would recommend this place so long as you are not in a hurry. Danke!
I love German food and I had been meaning to come to Teske's for years. We finically decided to go for our 25th wedding anniversary and were not disappointed. The theming of the restaurant seemed to be authentic Bavarian. The good was great. The selection of German beers on tap was large. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. The restaurant was moderately busy on a week night, but it was quiet enough that conversation at the table was easy. Our eleven-year-old son had good time and requested we eat there again. We now plan to make dining at Teske's a regular thing.
Rustic atmosphere and a classy crowd make this region-specific restaurant an absolute treat to stop in for a drink or linger over an authentic German meal. The ambiance is quiet and the service prompt--and unrushed.
End of the night and very quiet. Excellent food and service.
Excellent traditional German food served with a nice selection of authentic German beers.
Outstanding food and service. Nice to see a traditional German restaurant with Biergarten. I will go back when I turn to San Jose.
Our family had guests from out of town and we wanted to share a San Jose landmark with them. We had a great dinner together! Wiener Schnitzels were a big hit and some of the specials were enjoyed. We’ve been coming to Teske’s for over 40 years and they never disappoint!
Great classic German food. Tasty and good value with huge portions. Not a place for light fare, more a place of stretchable lederhosen.
We had the best time!!!! Dinner was perfect! Cynthia took great care of us. We will definitely be back. And if the wild boar goulash is on the specials board make sure to try it!!!
we had Scott for our server ask for him excellent customer service on his part
Loved it! I was craving sauerbraten (an old friend makes it every Christmas and I haven't had it in forever) and went to Teske's to get some. I was worried it just wouldn't be the same but it was just about perfect! It really hit the spot and the service was great. I didn't realize it would come with soup, salad and dessert as well... definitely worth the price. I lived in Germany for a year and I have missed the carrot and cabbage salads they bring out before your meal so I really enjoyed their version of it! And the beer was good too and comes in liters like it ought to :) LOVE this place.
This was our first visit but won't be our last. The food was delicious, our waitress was wonderful and the restaurant was charming. We will be coming back!
Teske's is always a favorite during the Christmas Holiday Season. Portions are very generous (Huge!) and always delicious. Very authentic German Food (verified by a visitor from Berlin!). Good selection of German beers. Love Teske's!
This is my can't miss place whenever I come to San Jose. Amazing food and fun atmosphere. Love it!
Great and authentic German Food and great selection of original German Beers.
Great food and service. This restaurant is truly a hidden gem and whether you go during the summer to have a beer in the beer garden or a nice dinner in the dining room, you will not be disappointed!!
Service was the best part, and food matched the level of service. Has a good atmosphere, which gives the feeling of being in a quaint German inn. Bathroom could use some upgrades, but that is a nitpick.
Our waitress was excellent and food delicious
Great traditional German restaurant with three seating areas - the bar, dining room, and the indoor "biergarten." The biergarten features a live band and there is a dance floor for traditional German and German-American traditional dances and sing-alongs. Lots of fun! But, if you are looking for more quiet conversation, opt for the dining room.
Typical selection of German beers and food. The schnitzels were good as was the goulash (great kick!)
Food reminded me of Germany. Menu had all the German fare that you could ask for, service was prompt and the beer was delish.
Our food was way below expectations. The chicken schnitzel tasted rancid, the veal didn’t taste like veal, and the spatzle was disappointing and didn’t taste any spatzle I’ve had. We will NOT be returning.
Always a great time here. P erect spot for dates, special occasions, you name it!
Lovely spot with authentic, honey food and drink. Slightly dated vibe but I hope they never change it.
I absolutely love German food. I just came back from Baveria last month and I must say that Teske’s was impressive. It was great to share my favorite German foods with my friends. I’ll definately be returning.
The best place to celebrate Octoberfest in San Jose.
Absolutely fantastic!!! I loved everything we had! fried sauerkraut balls, sausages, entrees. It's all amazing and authentic. Will be coming back again and again when I'm in town.
always enjoy the pork and sausage offerings.. only issue is parking.. it is a problem finding a spot
The food and drinks are good and quite authentic (I was raised in Germany and lived there for 33 years). The place has a nice atmosphere. It's quite expensive, though.
My wife and I were joined by some friends from Japan and were delighted with the service and tasty appetizers chosen. Great selection of beer and we missed by a day the band for the evening which would have been an additional fun experience. It was one of our friends birthdays and so they brought a piece of their apple streudel with a candle and we sang a birthday song for her. Al in all a nice evening nout.
Octoberfest with a good music band and very good food and beer.
Great spot to celebrate Octoberfest in their beer garden. Great music, beer, food, and company.
Fun and tasty food and beers, definitely great for music as well.
Very lively Oktoberfest atmosphere. Nice service and good German beer. Food was subpar, meat was tough and not too flavorful. Salad was plain. Maybe it's normally better but due to the crowd it seemed rushed.
