Teske's Germania Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
If you are hungry for a true German meal, head to Teske's Germania. The menu offers a great variety of German meals at a very reasonable price. Dinner entrees included homemade (and delicious) soup, German salad, main course (my Jagerschnitzel came with Spaezle), and homemade apfel Strudel. Servings are generous and service is outstanding. Great selection of German beers are offered along with a good wine list.
Our food was excellent, the appetizer was good (we had to bring half of it home) and our server was excellent. It was Valentine's Day and we hadn't been to Teske's for years so I made the reservation at the last minute and was pleased that we were able to be accommodated.
The tomato bisque soup was superb. The entrees were done properly and tasted great. It was a surprise to have a 3-piece jazz trio playing background/dinner music and I mean just that, I did not have to yell across the table to my husband. Good musicianship as well. Had to have the strudel for dessert and finished with some schnapps. The beer list is comprehensive so my husband had to ask for some advice and our server recommended one that he enjoyed throughout dinner.
My only problem and this is not Teske's fault is that the City of SJ is working on the streets. It took us a while to navigate around the area but we were able to capture a parking place on the side street facing the restaurant. So, people need to plan on a few extra minutes to find parking or to walk a couple of blocks.
We will be returning soon!
Love coming to this place for traditional German meals!! Brought my two year old and three year old. Had a fantastic time!!! The waitress was very nice when she saw we were ready to leave and the kids were getting bored(loud) brought our check to us promptly.
Have been coming and will continue to come!!
Brought my girlfriend here while visiting the city for her Birthday. We had plans to go see the Sharks game, but wanted to eat beforehand. So we let our waitress know and they helped us speed through the process and we're nothing but wonderful to us. We made it to the game on time with wonderful directions given by the waitress.
The food was delicious, the atmosphere was great, and you could really tell they wanted us to have a good time there and in the city in general.
It was a great choice, and we'll definitely be back if we're back in the city.
First time being here it was a real special treat. My husband who is from Germany loved the food and beer. I enjoyed the salad and soup before the meal had plenty of leftovers for the kids. Loved the ambience, only complaint I had was not really with the restaurant but with the noisy people close to our table. Some friends of theirs showed up so they were crowding our small table with backsides to us which was not nice but they should've been more aware of these things.
Overall they have a great selection of good traditional German meals. Will definitely go back soon with the kids!
The food was excellent, everything we ordered was delicious+. Having a few more vegetarian options could help with hosting groups, but the one vegetarian dish is good. Servings seemed small, but in the end they were just right, not too small, not too much. I wish the dessert menu was a big longer, although the apple strudel was fantastic.
For Authentic German cuisine I rate Germania as 7/10. Several years back, I recall some fine authentic dishes on the menu that are no longer offered. Additionally, the restaurant has gone very casual, and not the "special occasion" atmosphere anymore. There were two families with loud children on a Saturday evening. Carpets need cleaning, waiters are helpful but not seasoned. Requested the apple strudel warm. We saw desserts pre plated; dressed with a tiny dollop of whipped cream laid out on a table of pre-cut desserts as we walked in before dinner. Warmed? The waiter did not know what to do. It's an assembly line operation -- you get slices of rye bread (cold, too), a salad (greens, cabbage and sour red cabbage) - tasty- and pieces of sliced crepe in a beef broth for soup - good. A good family dinner spot to try something a little different.
This is the long time authentic German restaurant in San Jose. It has all the culinary standards and a good beer selection (along with a full bar). All of our selections (I had Jager Schnitzel with Spaetzel) were good with bread and soup for all of the entres (and apple strudel for dessert). In better weather there is outside seating, bit it was raining while we were there, but it was still possible to seat 14 of us together. With kids it took us only an hour to get out for a Sharks game.
We took our kids to Teske's Germania for a New Year's Eve dinner before going to a family party later that night. We like to expose our kids to international cuisines and cultures. Tonight it was German. Everyone tried something different and we all loved it! This is one of those historic gems that is a must do. Dinner comes with homemade soup, salad, the entree with sides AND apple strudel for dessert! Prices are so reasonable and the portions are good sized. I took half my Wiener Schnitzel home, but my 10 year old almost finished her entire Jagerschnitzel because she loved it so much and she wasn't interested in sharing! We started with garlic fries because this is where they originally made them before everyone got on the bandwagon. My husband loved the extensive beer selection. We will definitely be coming back. Our server has fabulous too.
We dine at Teske's because we like German food, and theirs is authentic. We were lucky enough to be there on an evening when one of the specials was Rindsroulade. The herb and pickle filling was delicious, and the beef was nice and tender. Everyone at the table enjoyed their food. The structure of the menu is good, too. If you want to have a ketogenic meal, you can make a dinner out of appetizers easily. If you want a full meal including dessert, you can order that, or order things a la carte. Great beers are on tap, too, and complement the food perfectly.
We were looking for German Food for a birthday celebration. Menu was great. Interior Décor was Very outdated and worn, probably a historic building - however, that was actually quite cool/interesting/fun for a German restaurant, it created a nice ambiance. We really liked it! Beer selection was Great! Food was delicious! And we were pleasantly pleased with a 4-course meal! TONS OF FOOD! The soup was sooo good, salad was nice, entre was great, and the desert put us over the top! Yum! I want to go back just for a date-night!
Yes, It would be nice to see some attention to some details; ie, update the bathrooms; which were kind of odd even though very tidy.
Restaurant accommodated our request for "a la carte" selection from full dinner selections. German potato salad was a disappointment. Veal cutlet needed more sauce. Sliced Veal with gravy special was a winner. Waitresses were all cordial and conversational with us for our early dinner at 5:30pm before 7:30pm theatre reservation.
For all I know Germania provides diners authentic German food in a historic San Jose location. A parking lot across the street offers super close well lighted parking for 6 bucks. An entree gets you perhaps the best split pea soup ever. I love going with folks who hate the soup meaning I get even more for myself. As much as you might study the menu be prepared for the specials. I had the wild boar stew after hearing the specials and changes my original pick. I made the right choice ! It was awesome. Even vegetarians can find something here. Can't wait to get by for lunch and some Ruben sliders. Oh and even the pickiest of eaters can order entrees with no sauce aka plain and boring and Germania will substitute French fries for anything. Can't wait to go back.
Great food at a good value. Terrific service. Everything included salad, soup, main course and dessert. Fun place to have dinner as it was authentic Bavarian atmosphere. Great beer selection on tap and also a lot in bottles. The Schweinhaxe was as good as I have eaten in Germany. Friendly management and staff. Wunderbar!!! Ausgezeichnet!!!!
Having the bar up front before the table reservations was a little disorienting. The waitresses were amiable and helpful. I really liked the setting and the atmosphere created by the decorations and tableware. The polish sausage tasted ordinary but their dessert cakes were good. Service was excellent as the waitress checked on us from time to time and made good suggestions on what to eat. If I were to go again, it would be for the ambience above all.
For those of you who are under the impression that Germans are stiff, strict, and straight-laced you have got to pay a visit to Teske's Germania. These folks are not only friendly and accommodating, but they know how to feed their guests.
From appetizers to dessert (which we had to take with us because they filled us to the brim) - and every course in between - these folks made us feel like they really cared about getting things right.
Check them out some night (or day). Just make sure you have plenty of time, and bring a hearty appetite, You won't leave hungry, and you won't be disappointed. I might even say you could become a Teske's Germaniac. No, really!!
The Jaegerschnitzel is our absolute favorite. The mushroom sauce is wonderful. The portion of Spaetzle was much too small, though. The basket of bread they served us before our meals arrived was not the yummiest bread we've ever had, either in the US, nor in Europe. Asking $7 for a slice of cake is utterly ridiculous, especially when the lunch portion size is so small. The Jaegerschnitzels we ordered were $15 each. We do wish they were open for lunch on weekends.
We used to go to Teske's quite often when we lived in San Jose almost 30 years ago. Nostalgia set in since it looked somewhat the same which was delightful. The festive ambiance was fantastic, and we enjoyed the 4 course meal that came with each entree. I had the pork shank special served with German potato salad and sauerkraut that was delicious. The pork shank was huge, and the pork chip was reasonably sized. Paired with German pinot noir, the flavors were amazing. The service, especially our waitress, was excellent. We wished we lived closer so we could enjoy Teske more often. 🍷🍻
The food is good authentic German, very good selection of beers. Cozy place overall with great outdoors dining weather permitting. Fast and efficient service. However, prices are moderate to high and they don't match online menu. Restaurant menu prices are higher, sometimes substantially. I ordered non-alcoholic Erdinger beer. A 12 floz (0.33l) bottle cost me $7 vs. online menu price of $4.50. $7 for 12 oz is a very steep price, and mismatch with online menu prices is deceiving.
