Terzo Piano, located on the 3rd floor of the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago, open for lunch daily. It features the signature cuisine of Chef Tony Mantuano, who has been delighting Chicagoans for years at the four-star Italian restaurant, Spiaggia. The food is all fresh, local, organic and sustainably produced. In season, you may also dine al fresco on the covered sculpture terrace, while enjoying spectacular views of Millennium Park and the Chicago skyline.
Terzo Piano is open to the public, without requiring admission to the Art Institute.
Guests may access the restaurant either via the Nichols Bridge which extends from Millennium Park to the restaurants entrance or via the Modern Wing entrance of the Art Institute at 159 E. Monroe St. and take the elevator, on the right

Perfect setting for a lunch with conversation that does not fight with background noise and commotion. Charcuterie tray with a crisp wine was one of the best.
Good food and service. Five of us shared 3 dishes which worked very well.
It was a very good meal! I will definitely be back. It’s one of my favorite Chicago lunch spots!

Very pleasant and great for conversation. Wonderful respite during the day.
Ridiculously expensive for very little food especially once the huge, extra tax gets added just for dining downtown. Lunch for 2 with non alcoholic drinks: $56 + sales tax + $8 for random downtown dining tax + server tip is WAY too much for a small, thin piece of fish with a spray of greens on top, a small mushroom and tofu dish, iced tea and coffee. Do not waste your time and money here.
We shared the kale Cesar salad and the mushroom flat bread. Both were excellent
The food and service was excellent. We had the mushroom flatbread which was delicious as was the wild boar sugo which has a wonderful fresh made pasta with it. We also enjoyed the root beer!

If you want to enjoy a view of downtown Chicago and a simple, but delicious meal in an unhurried atmosphere...and with great art afterwards...you'd want to go to Terzo Piano on the 3rd floor at the Art Institute of Chicago. Fine art and fine dining at one fine place!
Sunday morning apparently is very quiet and the bright sun and the atmosphere was just lovely. Our lentil soup and potato soup were excellent!

A delightful lunch this afternoon after relaxing amidst the great artwork of the museum. The service was attentive and food terrific. A bit pricey and a rather sterile environment. The menu featured great variety.
The ambience & food are good, but the service was poor for the price point & caliber of cuisine.

I always go to Terzo Piano when I visit Art Institute of Chicago museum. I like the ambiance the most, the foods have been always ok, the service? We had the worst service from this waiter! He was very RUDE. I think I would still go there for other reasons, but not for the service! Thank you

If you're going to the museum, this is a must stop
I enjoyed one of the most inventive dishes I had eaten in a long time: an Octopus/calamari, chickpea, baby roasted potatoes, frisée greens, entree. What pulled it all together was a delicious mole sauce. Complex, so tasty and satisfying. Friends had the grilled chicken with cheesy grits, and gourmet burger and fries. Safer choices, but the unique dish I had will be remembered.

My wife and I visited for the Valentines Day $185.00/couple and $30.00/person wine pairing prix-fixe menu. The menu sounded great and we were looking forward to it. Overall we had a nice night and still enjoyed each others company, however it the food was below what we were expecting for the price, service was chaotic and unorganized, and the overall experience was not worth spending $300.00+, I wish we had gone elsewhere for the price. Some highs and lows:
-The oysters and cavier appetizers were good. Salmon salad was good.
-The red-wine risotto was well done and flavorful.
-The Branzino was cooked perfectly and tasted great.
-The raspberry tiramisu dessert was a large shared portion and tasty.
-The wine pairings were nice and seemed to compliment the food fairly well, and at 30.00/person seemed like a value.
-Overall food was good.
-Service was absolute chaos - clearly frustrated food runners brought the wrong food/course order to our table on more than one occasion - this was a common occurrence watching the rest of the restaurant.
-It took ~45 minutes between receiving the oyster and caviar appetizers and our second course of a salmon salad - thank god we had wine.
-Tables sat ~30 minutes after us were 2+ courses in front of us.
-Lighting was too bright for a romantic setting.
-Steak was ok, needed more seasoning and they never asked how I wanted it cooked, mashed potatoes felt like they had been left out under a heat lamp.
-Food quality overall was good, but was not worth the price.
-Staff offered no apologies and didn't acknowledge the service mishaps at all.
Overall, we'd come back again on a normal day when the kitchen is ready, and be happy to pay normal prices. The front of house staff and kitchen were clearly NOT ready for this type of menu and service and this was the largest disappointment. The food and service was not on par with a $300+ bill.

Very very disappointed in the Valentines Day Couples dinner experience. Not worth the $200 price tag. Night at the museum, elegant dinner, live music, sounds romantic right? Instead we had to wait for our table without any drinks because the bar was out of order. The violinist was okay but played music off her iPad most of the time. Appetizers were very small(two oysters the size of plankton and tiny crackers with a dab of truffle)... we waited one hour for our ravioli and then it came out cold. seconds after we received the ravioli, they gave us our main course dishes. which we were supposed to get a sorbet in between but never did...waiter just forgot. the rib filet was cold, certainly sat in the kitchen for over 20 minutes until I had to ask the waiter where is our food. My fiancée ordered the roasted cauliflower which was a Main dish... this was basically a head of cauliflower sprinkled with siracha sauce and thrown in the oven. On top of that, this was cold too. The "tiramisu" was a strawberry ice cream cake. Although I thought it tasted fine. Views were awful, the room was lit up like an art gallery, my fiancée's gimlet cocktail tasted like soap. Hefty price for an experience like this one and a not so romantic dinner we will both never forget :(

One of the worst values. We did a prefix menu. Everything brought out was bland and lacked any creativity. The ambiance is terrible. It feels like you're eating in a cafeteria. Our server forgot to bring us a check and didn't come back to our table for a solid 25 minutes. Not to mention they brought out the courses of the prefix menu out of order. I would never go back. It was a complete ripoff.

Valentine’s Day dinner was wonderful. Each course was masterfully paired with a delicious wine. We were very satisfied. The music set an awesome vibe as well.

My boyfriend and I came here for Valentine’s Day. We paid for the $185/couple prix fixe meal and the $30/person wine pairing. The dinner was supposed to include a champagne toast and the opportunity to tour the museum. We were never given the toast but were told it was part of the wine pairing which we had to pay for. Service was poor and when I tried to check in with the waitress she was condescending in her responses. Finally, after we paid for a $300+ meal we tried to tour the museum. We were told the museum was closed by security guards and they pushed us towards the exit. I tried to explain that we were guests of the restaurant, but accepted that the museum was closing. My boyfriend called an Uber and while sitting down waiting for the Uber we were rushed to leave by the security guards again. I tried to explain we were waiting for an Uber and after a $300+ meal you would think they would have some hospitality. They simply did not care. They forced us to leave the building when my boyfriend was not even wearing a coat and it was below freezing outside. We were cordial but the security guards simply wanted to leave and go home. It was so rude and a terrible way to end an evening. I will not return and will advise friends and potential patrons to do same. I can’t believe that we were treated like this and shoved out the door after paying so much money for dinner.
Do not come here if you want to be cast away without any care by employees who have their own best interests in mind instead of the customers. So rude I still can’t believe it.

Terzo Piano was my favorite restaurant to go to when attending the Art Institute when it first opened in the Modern Wing. My favorite was the mussels in white wine sauce. Over time the menu is not as interesting. My friend and I both had salads. She asked for more salt for hers. I could have asked for more dressing, but that was not the missing factor. What was missing was complexity.
I realize that dietary constraints make menus challenging for restaurants. I follow a diary-free, pescatarian menu now. But I can go across the street and get very complex interesting plant-based salads.

The restaurant was nearly empty on a Sunday at 12:30. We hadn't been here in a few years and it did not live up to our memories. Wait staff was not attentive and we'd have to frequently request refills of our drinks. One of us dropped a fork and ended up borrowing from a someone at our table who didn't need it for their meal. We couldn't track down a server for help. The menu was quite limited with only one fish/seafood entree, (trout which no one in our party cared for) and boring salad selections. Our party of 5 needed 2 of the bread orders so everyone could have the equivalent of a roll. The charge is $11- for one "tray" of bread. It was very good, but not worth the price of $22 for the table. The only salad offering chicken had the sliced chicken served cold, which we found unappealing. One of us got a hamburger and it was served on a bun that had some mold on it and was a very generic McDonald's type bun. How about a nice Brioche or other style roll for the hamburger? The chicken with grits was delicious as was the special pasta dish. It's a lovely setting and we enjoyed eating at the museum. For those reasons, I would recommend it, but the restaurant is certainly not what it used to be.

Met an old friend for lunch who I haven’t talked to in years. The ambiance and noise level were perfect and the food delicious. We had the vegan options which were surprisingly very tasty. Also, I appreciated the great service. My friend and I sat for more than a couple hours and our server never rushed us. He was awesome.

Very good food and cocktails. Great view, relaxing atmosphere. A must when going to the Art Institute.
I'm usually a fan of this place but I just received a poorly executed meal. Crispy brussel sprouts completely burnt. $27 for maybe 2 cups worth of soup "seafood stew" that literally had 3 mussels, shrimp you would only find on a pizza and 2 slivers of fish, maybe 2 oz worth. Not to mention I had to whipe my own plate just to take a photo of the dish. I will say the Salmon with fingerling potatoes and carrots was the best dish we recieved. I should of played it safe and got the burger.

Great place for a delicious meal while at the AIC; Great view of the Michigan Avenue skyline. Patio seating in season.
So, for us there is no better place to enjoy excellent food and stunning views, especially on a dreary winter day. We so appreciate the light and airy atmosphere at Terzo Piano. Food is always interesting and fun. Portions are good size and there is always an excellent soup (also good on a cold day). We're local, so tend to come here in winter and avoid the summer crowds. Highly recommend for a civilized and beautiful meal.

We got a great table, even though the fog made our view out to the lake a modern art black and white photo of trees in fog. My friend thought the Restaurant week menu had too many bean dishes, so we ordered off the usual menu, which was fine, since it still had Warhol-inspired plates. I ordered the Brussels Spouts, shaved very thin, and while it was salty for me, I generally dine low sodium because of high BP. My friend who is low BP, and needs salt, thought it was fine. I ended up giving her my over-ambitious sprinkling of parmesan, which added to the Rorschah fish dish (cod with barley) that she ordered. To cap it off, I ordered a Debbie Harry, to match my salt with some sweet, and this time, Sabrina ate the fries that came with it with the Chipotle Mayo I didn't use on my sprouts, as they were tasty enough. The dessert was a chocolate malt with banana cotton candy hair on top, which was interesting enough to bring another diner over to see what I was eating. Bree took a picture, which we later showed to the guy who'd helped up at the membership desk. I found it under sweet (but I use 2 sweet and lows with everything) but tasty, and it certainly was artful. We also had a glass of champagne each, which was delicious, although I'm not sure which kind she ordered. It was her treat, but I must imagine the meal was around $50, with each of us eating about $20 worth of food, which was adequate to fill us up and give us strength to endure the crowds at the Warhol exhibit for a few hours. The restaurant was quiet until about 12:30 p.m., when we left and it started to fill up. Service was excellent. Would eat at again.

The room was minimal but beautiful and while we were seated in a banquet next to two other parties the noise wasn't an issue. The food was good but the wine was overpriced.
