Tempura Matsui invites you to experience the fine art of cooking tempura. Within a serene setting, guests have a seat at our counter or tables and can view the delicate preparation of lightly frying fresh fish and vegetables. Tempura Matsui is designed to emulate a Japanese cottage with warm woods, slate floors and round and square windows. A five-seat bar allows guests to wait for their seats while enjoying a glass of wine, sake or beer.
A chashitsu or a tea-house-inspired room is available for private dinners of 2 – 5 guests. To book the private room, please call the restaurant directly.
Wonderful place - you've never had tempura before unless you've eaten here!
Have been wanting to go for years and the experience far exceeded my very high expectation. A perfect, exceptional meal, attentive staff, beautiful surroundings-- a delightful evening with not one false note.
Perfect dining for Japanese authentic cuisine and mood.
Really beautiful food, and loved the unassuming frontage and interior!
Always fresh, and delicious food. They never disappoint me.
Amazing experience. Wonderful food with great hospitality. Lunch set is unbeatable value. Top notch of everything. Must try out the sea urchin/uni, it’ll blow your mind.
Tasty interesting tempura served slowly without rush. Fun enjoyable experience. Loved it!
Best Tempura in NYC...if you're looking for authentic Japanese Tempura, Matsui is the place. Everything from service to decor to presentation is top notch. And obviously the food is amazing. I've had the pleasure of visiting the restaurants several times and each time has been well worth it. Highly recommend to anyone and everyone.
Perfectly done tempura, light battered assorted seafood with veggies. Enjoy the appetizers as well.
We loved our food and the staff was very friendly. highly recommend!
Excellent experience, we went there for my husband's birthday. I called a couple of days before asking to push our reservation by 30 minutes later and ask for the best table as it was my husband's BD. We were given an imcredible table, we were basically had a private space just for us. The service was impeccable warm, not overwhelming, the timing for each dish was perfect. The food was simple and flavourful, yet the taste was an incredible experience of perfect chemistry in the mouth. The quantities were just right not too little like many starred restaurant where you feel starved after the meal, yet not too much that you feel uncomfortably full.
The foie gras entré, the Uni tempura and the baby peach were the highlight of my day. Best Michelin starred restaurant I have been to so far in the world. Michelin guide should definitely reassess Matsui for a second star!
Incredible experience and great wait service. Truly no complaints
If you love tempura, this is the place for you. Everything is fresh, inventive and delicious!
Excellent food preparation and nice ambiance. Staff took all precautions during COVID. Explained food served. Special occasion that they made even better.
Excellent experience. Very good and attentive service with top notch cuisine. This is a must try.
As good as any one star tempura in Tokyo, omakase actually better!
Una experiencia diferente, la base son los témpuras de excelente calidad y muy diversos, hay dos opciones de menú, aparte te dan unos platillos muy ricos
Awesome food unlike anything you can get anywhere else. Worth a visit.
Everything about this experience was wonderful. The food is delicious and beautifully presented the service is some of the best I've ever had, and the restaurant itself feels like you've stepped into a beautiful restaurant in Japan.
Food and service was excellent. But drink was a bit over priced.
This was my first time back in about a year, and it was my guest’s first visit. She was impressed with the quality and presentation of the food and the attentive service. For me it’s like coming home; even after such a long absence, the chef remembered the things I like and dislike. The batter on the tempura is thin and crisp, and not at all greasy. Side dishes complement the tempura, and the rice is of high quality. I recommend Tempura Matsui without reservation l, but you’ll need a reservation to go there since it’s so small.
It was absolutely amazing the food is
Great food and was very stuffed afterwards. Service was very attentive. We had the add-on uni which was delicious and will try the lobster next time. It is a lot of deep fried food so for someone like me who doesn't eat a lot of grease and deep fried on the regular, it was very harsh on my throat for a few days so very important to stay hydrated.
Always a great culinary escape from the outside world. Not only is the tempura extraordinary, Matsui is one of the very few tempura bars dedicated to the cuisine. The setting is serene and authentic. The service is thoughtful and never intrusive.
Excellent food and service - will definitely be back!
Best Tempura in NYC!
Food here is always beautiful, tasty and fresh. The room is elegant and quiet. We felt very safe eating indoors (we were alone though). San is the most gracious host! Hoping to be back for lunch soon. Note: it is pricey but if you can afford it, well worth it.
My wife and I have loved this place since it opened. The food and service are impeccable. It reminds us very much of what you could find in a good restaurant in Tokyo or Osaka. They have setup a surprisingly warm and nicely decorated tent to eat outside during the pandemic. It is still the same great food and service. It’s well worth a visit especially if you liked it from the time before the pandemic struck. Please visit and enjoy.
Even dining outdoor under enclosed tent at 34*F, the tempura still maintained its crunchiness! It’s a testament to the chefs. My ambiance rating was based on what I saw of the interior.
Love the food, umai desu, best tempura I’ve ever had
Great place for the authentic tempura. I would be a repeater definitively.
Increible, el mwjor lugar de Tempura en NY
Great experience. Great service. Certainly the best tempura in nyc.
Great service but food not at that price.
Lunch was phenom. Highly reco.
Fantastic lunch experience. We sat outside on a nice Saturday. Our waiter was a lovely, professional gentleman.
You get a lot of food which is all delicious.
Glad we gave this restaurant a try.
All Covid precautions are taken.
Very good tempura kaiseki omkase and perhaps the only places that does it right since Inagiku closed down back in the day.
Obviously its a bit expensive but I think its a good place to treat yourself once in a while. We went for the deluxe 220 course but the 160 course will be more than enough.
It was a very wonderful meal!
