Elevated Japanese cuisine at a very reasonable lunch menu price. Excellent fine dining service. Authentic Japanese experience. The real deal
Food wasn't especially brilliant. It was good, don't get me wrong, but at this price and with the whole Michelin guide recommendation, I was expecting to be blown away. Service was fine until the last tempura which took 20+ minutes to come and everything was slow after that. Staff were super friendly and helpful though. All in all, left a bit of a "not bad" feeling but for $300+, I want to feel better than that.
That was our first experience with Tempura Matsui as my boy friend mentioned about going there for several months....It turned out pretty good and was what we expected. I would highly recommend my friends to go there.
Overall a good dining experience, if you’re looking for an extraordinary dining experience then tempura Matsui is a must-go. But if you are just an average tempura lover who only appreciates the crunchiness of tempura then it might not be the best choice since the pricing is high after all
Food doesn't live up to the high prices, but the service and ambiance are excellent.
Wonderful food and service. It's great fun to sit at the counter and watch the preparation.
Wonderful experience. Thank u for your service.
I thought the tempura was good. The cooking and technique of making the tempura was amazing, easily best tempura ive had, my only issue was the flavor. You had the option to dip the tempura in seaweed salt or their tempura sauce. Dippubg the tempura in the salt creates inconsistent butes with varyig saltiness. I think if the chef seasoned the tempura before giving it to you it would be more consistent, and have the perfect level of saltiness. In addition, using different sauces or flavored salts would bring a more interesting flavor besides just from the seafood or vegetables. I feel that edoame sushi meals have started using different spices, sauces, and herbs to bring different flavors besides of just seafood and rice to elevate their meals and give the customer a unique experience. I think the tempura meal would have benefitted to an approach like this. Overall good seafood, just flavors were not interesting
In short story. It wasn't that impressive on service and taste. The fish and fried food were good but I was expecting some more for 500 dollar price tag. The waitress was getting less attentive when the restaurant got busier.
The service is top notch, great experience, love the lunch prices and the tempura was nice and crisp.. the fish was meaty and delicious!!! The side dishes were the right size and flavorful.... Japanese tempura in New York... when you can’t be in Japan this is the next best thing! Thank you... enjoyed ourselves very much .. and of course you need to sit at the counter & eat it right when it comes out !!!! Yummy!!!
Unique and exceptional cuisine.
Place is bit far from station but nice walk to the restaurant.
Quantity of the food is more than enough.
Would love to come again next time.
The Special Lunch Set was an amazing value. I loved the ceramics. The plates and bowls were so pretty and unique. My favorite tempura pieces were the Maitake mushroom, Japanese Red Snapper, sea eel, crab and shiso, and Japanese pumpkin. The tempura was so light and crispy. That kombu salt complemented the tempura so nicely. The gentleman waiter was very nice and had a great sense of humor. I highly recommend!
Came an hour early before reservation time, and luckily it wasn’t too busy so they took us in! Exceptional service, watched our food prepared at the counter/bar tables. Food was delicious!
We were recommended to come to Tempura Matsui by a friend. We sat at the bar and really enjoyed our experience. The chefs were very friendly and super detail oriented. The chef noticed that I was left handed and would serve the food differently to accommodate me. The food was delicious and ambience was great! Would recommend to others and will definitely be back next time I’m in the city.
Great food and service!! We were told that no counter was available for four of us by the time when we got it. But before we start our courses, previous customers just left and the waiter switched us to the counter seats!! Highly recommend seating near the counter! It is an interesting experience to see how chef make your tempura! The food is awesome! Best tempura ever! My favorite one is uni!! High recommend everyone try it!! Every staff is very nice. Will definitely come again!!
A world-class restaurant, truely deserving of its great reputation. Food, service, decor, everything was flawless!
Lunch is such a great value! Same great service, a paired down but still good tempura experience.
Felt like in Japan
Classy Clean Quiet Respect for the food and fair
Perfect dining experience. Service was impeccable. Food was astounding.
Excellent set lunch - thin crunchy tempura and good value - highly recommended
This omakase tempura joins the company of a half dozen or so restaurants in the world serving the absolute Socratic form of tempura in a luxury environment that puts you right in Japan! It's a singular experience - you will pay for it - but it's worth it!
Having had quite a few lunches at Matsui, i am each time impressed by the perfection they show from the friendly welcome desk throughout the meal. My temple of tempura in New York whenever I am in town.
It’s a sensation experience as you are going to use five senses to enjoy the food here. I recommend booking a table at early time slots so you can sit at the counter. Do eat the food as soon as it comes out as you may miss the golden opportunity to taste its best if you wait, even just a few seconds!
wonderful food wonderful atmosphere!
Exquisite tempura with very fresh ingredients. Outstanding and very attentive staff with good
recommendations. I really enjoyed my dinner.
It felt like we were in Japan. The restaurant is beautiful. Unique pottery used for the abundance of tempura. We had the Tempura Matsui lunch. It came with miso soup, sashimi, pickles, udon salad, rice, along with tempura shrimp, okra, pumpkin, onion, black mushroom, eel. Dessert was a hojicha pudding. Everything was so delicious. Staff were attentive and excellent to what they do including Sun.
Delicious food. The tempura pieces are not oily like elsewhere. The fried flour layer is super thin yet tastefully crunchy. Fish and vegetable pieces are flavorful and juicy inside the flour layer. We sat at a table away from the chefs so we couldn't see how the tempura was made. Next time would sit near the chefs to observe the entire tempura making process.
Great lunch special! Highly recommend the $65 lunch set
Exceptional omakase lunch course. Will return for dinner soon!
Had the prix fixe lunch. Selection was varied, tempura expertly prepared and all were happy.
Amazing! Highly recommend Tempura Matsui. Amazed with how little oil or grease the pieces retained after being deep fried in a pot of oil. For those who love tempura or deep fried food, it is a much try!
It’s an amazing birthday !
Great food great service definitely a great place to try
Truly an amazing one of a kind experience
Nothing to add two the previous glowing reviews of the food and service. We had one $40 set lunch and one $65 lunch. The higher price is completely justified. It may vary from season to season, but on the day we went, the $65 meal also included snow crab, a scallop, tai, and shrimp kakiage, which would have been more than $50 if ordered a la carte.
Tempura Matsui continues to impress and serve what may be the best tempura in New York. Watching the chef prepare your food is like watching a artist in motion. Service is beyond approach, feel confident in asking for a saki recommendation. This has to be one of the City's hidden gems. Yes, this review is effusive but the restaurant deserves it (albeit a little pricy).
Great food!! Staffs are very nice and informative, especially when introducing the dishes :)
Outstanding food as befits a Michelin 1*, but be prepared to pay for the experience. Honestly the scallop, whitefish, and one or two other items were so good I almost want to ask... could you just get those!?!
