Taxim Ratings and Reviews
We have walked past this restaurant many times and did not realize it was there. Wow what a find. We were looking for something healthier in general and found this for convenience to something else we were doing. Well it turns out it was right next door. We will absolutely come back not just for the proximity to our other place but because the food was so good as was the service.
The service and food at Taxim are consistently great. The wait staff are attentive, warm and knowledgeable about the food and wines. The food is so flavorful and the blend of fresh herbs and spices in each dish we ordered was far above expectations. This Greek restaurant is unlike others we have tried. The preparation, quality and flavors are definitely worth trying. I highly recommend Taxim.
I loved this restaurant. The only thing I didn’t like was the hard wooden bench with the big pillows. It’s very chic, but for me it was uncomfortable.
If that’s the worse thing I could think of you know this place is awesome. I will definitely go back and sit in a chair next time. I highly recommend this place.
Went for my moms birthday - The mastica cocktail was excellent! The food was also great. We shared a few of the appetizers, the octopus and sea bass. Our server was very friendly and she knew the menu very well. Had some great suggestions. This is definitely a place where you want to share meals because you want to try everything!!
We also had dessert - ice cream, the chocolate halva (my favorite) and the loukoumades. The loukoumades could have been a little warmer but the density of them were great.
Overall it was an excellent experience and everyone left happy!
The food was not as authentic as we had hoped. The grilled Octopus was over salted, the hummus unremarkable. The service was wonderful and the ambiance was perfect. The pork shoulder was very chewy. The braised lamb shank was good and if you are eating there that would be a good option. Taxim needs to spend a little more time working on spices and flavor.
Really good and different Greek food and wine. The okra was honestly delicious; may have been the best I have ever had. Change the name of the duck gyros- it was good but not what the name leads you to expect. Very nice and helpful waitress, too. I recommend!
My husband and I went to Taxim for a Saturday night dinner date and were very happy with our choice. We sat on the patio upstairs, which had a great ambiance. It was fairly quiet despite being sandwiched in between Milwaukee Ave and the blue line. We started with the tzatziki with homemade pita, beer salad, and the artichokes and fingerling potatoes, all of which were delicious. However, the star of the night was our shared plates for dinner. We got the octopus and the pork belly and both were outstanding. Quite possibly one of the best meals we have ever had. We would definitely recommend Taxim and hope to be back soon.
This was an overall terrible experience. We were visiting Chicago and saw that Taxim had be favorably reviewed by the New York Times a year ago so we made a reservation. When we arrived at the restaurant we were seated on the rooftop patio which is very nice. We were greeted by a very kind waitress and ordered wine and an appetizer. Twenty minutes later the appetizer had not arrived but the waitress took our dinner order and suggested a few items from the menu. We also asked that a heater be placed near our table (there were already some near other tables) since it was getting dark it was getting a bit cooler on the rooftop.
The appetizer finally arrived and was good. A second item we ordered never arrived and neither did a heater to our table. Our entrees finally arrived after a very long wait. One entree was a whole fish and the food runner asked if we wanted it filleted (the menu said it would be). We said "yes" and he promptly took it away and sat it down on the bar where the waitress and the hostess took turns filleting it with a butter knife and returned it to the table about 20 minutes later very cold. The other entree we ordered, a lamb shank was covered in an absurd amount of greek yogurt and was not good either. The waitress removed the fish and the other dinner item which never showed up from our bill. She provided decent service although nothing could have repaired the rest of our dining experience at Taxim.
Our family went here after seeing a play at the Den theatre just down the street.
Food and service were excellent. The menu had lots of interesting items. Everything was fresh.
My only complaint, was that it was a hot, muggy night and the AC could have been stronger.
We'll come back for sure!
Get a rooftop table upstairs or go elsewhere. Great rooftop view, very european feel. Service very slow and not real attentive. Food is not great. Second time for me in last year and both equally disappointing food. We had 5 people (all Greeks) and not one standout item. Some items were disappointing at best. I am Greek and I find Greektown to be OK, not great. However, Greektown food at most Halstead Street restaurants is significantly better Than Taxim. In Chicago, we need more chef driven Greek restaurants like NYC - Milos and Pylos are two awesome choices in NYC.
If the weather is good, go here request rooftop and eat light, if you want better Greek food go to greektown - Greek Islands or Santorini- or better yet, NYC.
I booked this Greek restaurant for my daughter's 14th birthday. She loves Greek food and I specifically spoke to the reservation specialist and our hostess about her birthday. I was hoping that they would do something special for her or at least wish her a Happy Birthday. The meal came and went with no Happy Birthday. That was upsetting. We also had many other frustrations with our meal We waited a long time to get simple water served to us when we sat down (my husband got up to get water) and our main course was ordered incorrectly by our waitress so that we could not eat as a family. But no apology dessert or compensation with our bill. Our meal was very disappointing as I wanted to surprise my daughter with JOY. Not at Taxim....
Some reviewers didn't care for the service, we found the service to be attentive, helpful with food recommendations, and prompt. All of our choices were delicious, especially the shared small plates and lamb chop main course. Only concern was noise level and dim lighting (we asked for table candles which helped). Great neighborhood find & unique!
Great selection of Greek wines. The cuisine is Greek inspired with a modern creative twist. Wonderful flavours and I will say the best grilled octopus outside of Greece.
Eugenia was our server ask for her! If I get back to Chicago I will definitely be visiting again.
The food was outstanding! Exactly what we've been looking for in the way of down-to-earth, flavorful greek food that's not touristy or basic. The inside looked a little stuffy, but we sat on the rooftop and it was delightful. The Damen train stop is right there, but the sound was far from intrusive.
I dined at Taxim with a few of my friends and we really enjoyed our experience. We sat on the rooftop and it was wonderful. We also tried many different dishes and everything was fresh and delicious. I would recommend Taxim for a group of friends or a date.
We arrived at 7, ordered at 7:15, received our wine at 7:30. Small plates began to appear around 8:00. Our shrimp dish finally came around 8:30. When the octopus still hadn't come by 8:50 (despite our having asked about it), we decided to call it quits. The food is good, the roof-terrace is pleasant, but the interminable wait without any apparent concern for our well being from the wait staff more or less spoiled what could have been a wonderful evening. This was a Wednesday evening when there was no one in the downstairs restaurant and the roof terrace was approximately 2/3 full. In other words, the place could not claim to have been too busy to provide minimally good service.
We love Taxim, it's one of our favorite restaurants. But too many times we've been burned by the lack of servers. There is one server who is always on the rooftop. She is fabulous, but it's impossible for her to get to every table in a timely manner. We still hadn't been seen after 10 minutes of waiting, and we were starving. We ended up leaving because we couldn't wait any longer. That being said, Taxim has some of the best food I've had in Chicago. I only hope they hire more servers or put some of the guys that hang around the front to work.
We booked our reservation here because of the rooftop but what they do not tell you is that the rooftop if not guaranteed after 6pm even with a reservation. Oh well, we sat outside in the sidewalk patio. Unfortunately a smoker from the bar next door didn't care that he was within 2ft of people eating. Service was good and food was excellent although the entrees took an unusually long time to come out. Almost 50min between our appetizer and entrees.
We had reservations for 8:30PM on a Friday and were seated right away with had the option of either outdoor or indoor. It was a beautiful night, so we selected the rooftop. We were seated next to a heat lamp, which I very much appreciated, as I have a tendency to get chilled quickly.
Highly recommend this place for outdoor dining, unique food selections, and an impressive list of Greek wines. It's definitely not your typical Greek restaurant (as a regular of Greektown since I was a little kid visiting Chicago, I had mixed feelings on this, but glad I tried something new).
I will caution that if you have a dairy-free dietary restriction, as I do, it's a bit more difficult to find something. Be sure to mention it to your server earlier than later (even if it doesn't seem like dairy will be in there). I will note that our waiter wasn't all that attentive, but it was a busy night on the rooftop, so I'll reserve judgement on that.
