Tavira is a classy and sophisticated restaurant that specializes in Portuguese and Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant's interior features a spacious, open dining room with warm colors and white linen tablecloths over round tables. Tavira has been serving the area since 1999. It's a great destination for a romantic date or an intimate dinner with family and close friends.
Begin the meal with a classic appetizer like fresh clams with olive oil and white wine, stuffed ravioli with ricotta cheese and tomato cream sauce or sautéed shrimp in white wine and garlic. For the main course at Tavira, choose from a variety of pasta, meat and seafood dishes. Options include penne pasta with sundried tomatoes, olives, artichokes, peppers, roasted garlic and basil oil, fresh calf liver steak with caramelized onions, bacon and aged red wine vinaigrette and grilled rainbow trout served with lemon butter sauce and vegetables.
One of the few quiet restaurants in the DC area that also serves very good food. Especially strong on fish dishes.
Great food, great service, nice ambiance!
We keep going back because the food never disappoints. The specials are particular stand-outs so listen to the list carefully. Check for the schedule of music; we were treated to a guitar duo on one Saturday night who were fabulous. Parking is easy and the ability to have a conversation with your dining companions is a huge plus.
FANTASTIC restaurant with fish rivaling that on the coast of Portugal. Wonderful value as well. Fresh and large portions.
The food is simply outstanding....Caldo verde, the most delicious lamb chops and seafood. Excellent desserts that you would not have anywhere else.
Always fresh and delicious! Attentive service without suffocating. Excellent wine choices and very knowledgeable wait staff.
Great food and atmosphere. The service was fantastic.
The calf liver steak was out of this world and we really enjoyed their Portuguese wine, service, and live music!
Great service. Excellent waiter
The meal, Caesar salad w/chicken was quite good. Coffee was just o.k., would not order dessert again. Bread pudding way too sweet and the chocolate mousse was mostly whipped cream from a can.
Good food although I have never been to Portugal. I have made two visits. I have had the strip steak, which was not very tender. The second time I had the Bacalau with peppers and rice. Lite taste and delicious.
we have been twice now - and have now decided it is our "go to" restaurant.
we loved it.
Great food! I definitely would return to try more dishes.
The service and the unique menu and quality of the food.
A 70th birthday party for seven was turned into a special event. Tavira provided excellent service and the menu and food quality was appreciated by the guests. We will be back!
Very good food, service and ambience. Free and very convenient parking. A bit pricey...we got the specials (were not told the price - should have asked, but really shouldn't have to ask). Excellent garlic shrimp appetizer.
I had a very nice tiem again at this restaurant, food and service are excellent. I will come back again.
I've eaten here numerous times. Every time has been excellent. Whether for drinks and appetizers, a dinner date or a business meal, Tavira always delivers excellent service, a unique menu and delicious food.
It's good to see that I'm not the only one that feels it is worth getting off the beaten path a little. It's not out of the way, but it stands alone, about 1.5 miles from downtown Bethesda. Free parking and hard to believe $7 & $8 lunch take-out options. Completely worth the trip -- every time.
Do yourself and your friends/wife/colleagues a favor, eat at Tavira!
Great place to meet, right off the beltway.
Always a pleasure -- even on a busy Saturday night! The specials were pricey but very well done. My kosher, lactose-allerfic friend had no trouble finding good choices.
Lovely, intimate setting with outstanding menu and service!
Excellent food. Friendly staff. A tad noisy since we were next to music and were there to talk with friends. Hosts should ask before seating.
We had never been to Tavira but were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the exceptional service. And as icing on the cake, there was a guitar duo playing Spanish and Brazilian pieces that we love.
The food was not well seasoned; hence, it was boring. The seafood was overcooked. Not worth the price. Not worth going back for more. The service was good while we were the only people there, but it deteriorated when a special party started. I could not get a refill of my water glass, and it took a long time to get our bill, even though we had told the waiter when we arrived that we had a time constraint.
Tavira is a gem. Excellent Portuguese food, fairly priced, in a quiet and pleasant room. As good as many lauded places, and quieter than most.
If it weren't in the basement of a bank building in the burbs it would be mobbed all the time.
Don't miss it.
Only real Portugese restaurant in DC. Great wines and good food. Pleasant service.
Always very good cooking and pleasant service. Not much Portuguese cuisine in the area, so it is always nice to have such a reliable restaurant to return to for European/Mediterranean food. Wine list is also reasonably priced with a half-dozen vinho verdes. I had beef medallions in red wine sauce, and my friends had liver, pasta, and a fish of the day. Everyone really enjoyed their food Kudos to the chef. Not a "trendy" or glitzy play, and for those who prefer that, there are many choices in the DC area. In my opinion we need a few more places like Tavira, really good and good value.
What a find! We went to celebrate settling on our house and it was perfect! Wish we had found it sooner, as we are moving out of the area. It would have become a regular visit. Thank you Tavira!
My husband and I always enjoy dining here. Never disappointed.
As always, the food was delicious. For the most part, so was the service. The only problem with the service was a delay in getting the check and another delay in taking the payment. The service bringing our food was excellent. It was a Friday evening and the restaurant was relatively crowded, so the delays with the check were understandable, although inconvenient.
