Taverne of Richfield Ratings and Reviews
Downstairs is a live music venue; casual and entertaining. Sometimes the (jazz/blues/cover tunes) music is too loud making it difficult hard to have casual dialog over dinner. The food is surprising fabulous for the music/bar/basement setting. As a music venue after dinner.. for drinks, RT is wonderful and charming.
We enjoyed our meal and our time at this restaurant however after making a reservation when we got there we were still told there was a 20 minute wait due to the kitchen being behind. We were asked to wait in the bar (and we had underage children with us). When our table was ready we were escorted outside to a patio table, we were never asked if we wanted to sit outside . It was a chilly night in October and we were not dressed to be seated outside. I wish they would have told us that was the only thing available or asked what our preference would be before being seated.
Practically empty when I went there. My plate came out at least 5 min after the rest of my table. Ordered the short rib which should have been melt in your mouth and delicious and was instead like a piece of shoe leather. When the waitress finally checked on us 8-10 minutes after bringing the food, I asked for a replacement since I had tried my friend’s fish which was good. 25 min later I finally got the replacement entree. By that time I had lost my appetite and took the food home. Still had to pay for the meal despite all that. Would not order the short rib again, though the salmon did taste good. Not sure if I’d go back.
Sorry to say, but the turn off which will cause this to be my first and last time there is the mold smell throughout the restaurant. We literally almost told them to cancel outlet reservation because of the smell, until we found out there's and outdoor patio. So disappointing, as I have heard about this place for years when I was a kid and was excited to try it. You can tell it was once grand, bit things like the uneven paver bricks and ripped cloth awning at the entrance is a sign that they're not doing financially good. I'm thinking they're probably going to out of business soon. Service was good at the table, but they didn't have things on the menu as they "ran out" so some in out party had to make "last minute decisions" as the rest of the table *(5 of us total) already ordered. I got the walleye, which didn't have much flavor. The Brussels sprouts with it were great. The potato cake was terrible. Tasted like raw flour inside mixed with egg and potato shreds. Calimari app. Was good. Cheese app was good, but pitas were fried and GREASY! Just being honest here folks.
So happy to rate our experience! Very disappointing. Looking forward to celebrating my birthday with the great food we have experienced in prior visits. Was deciding between the salmon or walleye and of course the fantastic brussel sprouts. The waiter explained due to the busy weekend: out of salmon, out of walleye and out of brussel sprouts! REALLY! So very disappointed. Enjoyed the meals but will call before going back to check on availability of items you would be expected to find at any good establishment.
This was our 3rd time there. The wait staff is always friendly and very helpful. We had our daughter, son in-law and our 2 year old grand daughter there from out of town. The waitress was extremely helpful. We like the seasonal menu since it is always different.
The restaurant requested this review...I usually do not give poor reviews...This is probably a good restaurant but our experience was not so good...We had to ask for our waitress to take our order (she was waiting tabkes outside and inside. It took an hour to get our food. The waitress did not explain the menu (we heard other waitress explain it very nicely)If we sat outside service may have been better...I ordered medium rare lamb but it came medium flavor was good...My potatoes were tasty but cold in the middle... My husbands ahi tuna was cold and hardly seared...Piroges were excellent...I think we were an exception to the norm...We will have to give it another try before passing judgment...
Went for a birthday lunch.Food was uneventful. My sister's chicken sandwich was partially burnt to crisp. The reason she didn't say anything immediately was that she took 1/2 home and didn't see it was burnt until she got home. Why it was served that way out of the kitchen in the first place by the cook is unacceptable for a restaurant that has been around for years. My sister called and manager did take her name for a future visit but there will be NO future visit from us. My burger was not served as described but the waitress did come and tell me that ahead of time. waitress did bring me a birthday dessert on the house so that was nice.
We had a reservation for 7:00 on a Friday night. As soon as we arrived, we grabbed drinks at the bar, and were seated in the dining room. The rest of the night went as follows:
7:25- We still have not seen our server. We let the hostess know we haven't been waited on.
7:35- Still no waitress. We ask to see a manager.
7:40- Our waitress arrives, takes our drink and appetizer order (to their credit, they did give us a free round of drinks to apologize for the wait).
7:55- Our waitress brings our drinks and takes our order.
8:25- Our appetizer arrives. Meanwhile, the little boy at the table next to us has fallen asleep while the family waits for their food.
9:00- The waitress brings bread and says our salads will be out soon. We tell her to cancel our order and bring us our check for the appetizers.
9:15- Waitress has not returned, so we drop money on the table and leave.
This was not just our table. A couple at the table next to us arrived before us and received their salads at about 8:30. A family of 4 beside us who arrived at the same time we did were receiving their food as we left. I assume this is not typical for this restaurant as there is no way they could stay in business with this kind of service. We asked the server if they were short staffed or anything, and she said no.
We reserved a 6:30p table at Taverne of Richfield to celebrate our wedding anniversary. When we arrived, there were many open tables but we were first offered the booth by the kitchen door and both washrooms. We asked for a better seat. We then waited for 25 minutes for a waitress. A waitress who noticed we had been waiting said she would serve us drinks and try and find out who would be our waitress. Ten minutes later we received the Taverne's signature cocktails in 3" tall glasses and so much ice I could not get my little straw in the drink. These regular priced drinks were not old fashion glasses but a mini version. I wished we had left then.
We both ordered fish dinners; salmon and walleye. Both plates looked so much alike the server did not know which one was which. Both had a burnt ball of fried mashed potatoes and under cooked Brussels sprouts. The brussel sprouts were not on the walleye menu because my husband hates brussel sprouts and would not of ordered them. My salmon was to have a pretzel crust, but had the same coarse mustard sauce as the walleye. Even my salmon had the skin pulled up on the side which made the dish look gross.
The waitress was surprised at how sad the food looked and stated the place is a mess and she didn't know if she could find a manager or not. Well no one was checking plating in the kitchen and we said we would not wait for a manger to be found. This restaurant was packed with people and the staff just was running all over the place with looks of bewilderment.
It's good to see that the venerable Taverne of Richfield is back to its former glory. This is the first time we've been back in 2-3 years and the current owners have done a nice job in making the Taverne a destination. Nice and eclectic menu with good bang for your buck. Our server was a little inexperienced but very friendly and attentive.
Haven't been here in YEARS (like 20+!) and decided to go with a group of friends. Food was good, service was excellent. The calamari appetizer was very good; a very large serving for two---will fill you up. The rolls and olive oil mix were really quite good. Some of us had the potato crusted walleye which was "good" but not stellar. Other entrees ordered included the the strawberry chicken, veal parmesan and trout---these were well liked. Our server was excellent; very attentive. Would we go back? Yes.
Service was terrific and the menu was inspired . The food was tasty; however we noticed that our shared appetizer and one of our entrees were overcooked (charred) on the edges. Also it seemed that the way the entrees were served did not match the way they were described on the menu. Nevertheless, the dishes were enjoyable and overall, it was a nice dining experience!
Enjoyed a week night dinner. The service was outstanding. The food was excellent for the most part. The scallop and shrimp combo dinner was superb. The strawberrry chicken salad was very good as well. The chicken piccata was beautiful but disappointing. The sauce was so intensely lemony that eating more than a few bites was difficult. Overall the entire dining experience was pleasant.
