Taverna - Maui
Taverna won Best New Restaurant (GOLD), Best Bar (GOLD), Best Italian (SILVER) at the Maui No Ka 'Oi Magazine Awards 2017.
It’s close to the Ritz Carlton, that’s an advantage. Food was ok but not great. We liked Roys better.
Here for another fine dinner. We all enjoyed our food from salad to dessert. Taverna consistently serves great Italian food.
Portions small. Pay for bread. Waiter food recommendation was off the mark.
It was over 15 years ago that we last visited Maui and shared a wonderful Easter dinner at the Plantation with friends and family. The Plantation is truly beautiful destination with fantastic views and sunsets, however this trip we were disappointed, the food was nothing special, in fact vegetables and sides that came with our dinners were overcooked and bit soggy, reminiscent of cafeteria food. :(
A great place for views and cocktails, but there are plenty of other choices here in the island for a stellar meal!
Kelly was amazing! Always recommends great wines. Food is good. Never disappoints.
All of our food was delicious. Our server was very attentive. The noise level was a bit high but it did not interfere too much with our conversation. Highly recommended.
Best service and lasagna ever!!! We come here everytime we are in Maui
We had a dinner reservation and went early for their happy hour. Certain beers $4.50 and house wines $7. So I ordered a house Chardonnay . My husband had 2 beers and I had 2 glasses of wine. We we got the bill we were charged $17 for each glass of wine. I talked to our waiter and his boss was there too. The waiter said that the Pinot Grigio was the happy hour wine. I said that is not on the menu and not did you tell me that when I ordered. He asked his boss do you want to take care of this? He said they are changing that soon and he changed our bill to $7 a glass. I am glad they realizes that they needed to make that clear. We then had dinner. The caprese salad and the pizza was excellent. Our server, Marlene was also excellent. We will go back.
Terrible food, no flavor, soggy pizza, corked wine, poor and uptight service. Definitely the worst restaurant experience i have had on all my trips to Maui. Awful Italian food.
Good food, good service, very high noise level—which seems to be intended. One large dining space that includes an enormous rectangular bar, with big NFL TV visible from every dining table (meaning there is no real dining room). No drapes, no floor covering, no other cloth of any kind beyond napkins in the whole place (really). And no sound absorbing panels, which are easy even for a modernist vibe. Predictable result: contagious yelling at every table. I could hardly hear anyone at my small table, even with raised voices, and had to strain to hear our server (who was fine). Food was good enough to give this new place one more try when we return next summer. If the noise problem is not solved by then, loud must be their idea of hip and they can have it, for it is intolerable now.
The food was excellent, but the restaurant did not seem well organized. The food took a very long time to arrive and specific repeated requests for modifications were not followed.
We came here for dinner on our last night in Maui. Wow, what a wonderful sendoff for the end of our vacation. This place was a real find! Plenty of free parking, a beautiful location and the best service and food of our entire trip. The hostesses were very friendly and lovely and they sat us at the best table (I believe in the whole restaurant) overlooking the patio with open doors letting in a fresh breeze and tiki torches. The server Steve was awesome. Very energetic and knowledgeable, wonderful sense of humor and answered all questions we had. I could tell he loved his job and he was really great at it. We ordered a bottle of wine which was half off since it was Wine Wednesday (another huge perk!). We ordered the Pizza Carnivore as an appetizer and wow, just wow, it was hands down one of the top 5 best pizzas of my life. No cheese or peppers needed to enhance it whatsoever. Plenty of flavor! We ordered 2 salads which I feel for the price could have been a bit bigger. I was disappointed that they were so small but they were tasty. Then we shared a lasagna. Oh my, it's a good thing we only ordered one! It was plenty to share for 2 people and it was awesome. One of the best lasagnas I've ever had. We drove back to our hotel and just ranted and raved about how great this place was. It was such a gem and we will definitely be back again when we visit Maui. This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. Keep doing what you are doing! We will see you next year!
Delicious Italian food great ambiance
Chris is an awesome host as is his staff
Went on a holiday and everything was wonderful delicious and perfect!
Mahalo for a lovely Christmas day eve!!
We had a great evening. The food is always amazing, along with the service.
Could not ask for more! Food, service, attention to detail outstanding! We can’t wait to go back!!
Great food, great service, great ambiance.
Fresh pasta was excellent!
The evening was perfect, with a table in front of open French doors to sweet Maui air. The service was prompt and attentive. Our server was especially knowledgable and conscientious about the distinction between gluten-free sensitivities and Celiac issues, communicating clearly with us and the kitchen. We celebrated a lovely anniversary at Taverna.
Enjoy the food, and the good wine list. Service has always been good. Very Italian menu. Chef was very nice in adjusting his dishes to suit our preferences.
Had to ask our server several times for lemon wedges, an appetizer, and glass of wine b4 brought out to table. Service was slow. Perhaps server was preoccupied or forgetful. One of our pasta entries was delivered to our table at only a luke warm temperature, while the other did come out nice and hot.
Great attentive service from Marty. Caprese Salad was outstanding, yummy fresh mozzarella. Linguine and Vogole also delightful, tasty spicy sausage and pasta cooked al dente. Unfortunately, Tagliatelle with Pulpo was mediocre, lacked taste and noodles were overcooked. Sent it back but noodles came back once again overcooked. We were offered a nice dessert, vanilla with espresso, as a consolation.
Was recommended as best Italian food in Maui and they were right. Food excellent and service great in a relaxed atmosphere.
Just keep hoping for better. We keep trying the traditional “northern Italy” pasta dishes and not particularly satisfied.
Poor service - our waiter was borderline rude, yes we know how to read the menu. Didn’t take too much time or energy to explain options or point out options for vegetarians. Food wise, Poor options for vegetarians. Even the fresh fish was not very good. Cocktails were decent.
Disappointing to go for a special occasion - no acknowledgement at all :( every other place we’ve been to would do a quick congrats or something.
Always excellent service and a great meal.
Lovely and spacious restaurant.
Food was eclectic and flavors were challenging. Bruchetta too crisp, pieces too large and a general mess to eat. Lamb very good, lasagna had very unusual flavors. Disappointing for the Italian traditionalist.
Food was delicious, server was efficient but kitchen was backed up so dinner was delayed. Server apologized and brought bread to tide us over till dinner arrived. Fun night. Love 1/2 price wine night!
Our first time at Taverna and we had early reservations so we were seated with a wonderful view and breeze. (I found the ambiance disjointed as the dining area felt more like a date night vibe and the bar behind us was noisy with people watching sports on tv). The service started out well with a couple of supplement servers making sure food was served, drinks were full and plates were cleared, etc. Our main server was another story though... Our food arrived via another supplemental server and both our salad and pasta dishes were quite delicious. We actually started talking about what we’d eat next time we came. We were well into our meal before we were checked on. And then the service became non-existent and we had finished our mains, our plates had been cleared by the supplemental servers and we were then left sitting at the empty table for a very long time. This really affected our overall experience. We intended on ordering dessert but we reached the point where we just wanted the bill and couldn’t seem to get anyone’s attention at all. It was uncomfortable. Finally, the main server reappeared with zero acknowledgement of the lack of service and the long wait and placed dessert menus in front of us. We asked for the bill instead and left feeling completely unvalued. If the main servers are occupied waiting on larger parties or many tables at once, perhaps the supplemental servers could ensure that service continues. Good service makes or breaks a dining experience.
Great food, atmosphere, and surroundings. It was a fabulous birthday celebration.
We booked our Thanksgiving dinner at Taverna and had a great time. Nice staff, great food and all around a wonderful experience.
Food is excellent. My husband had lasagne and I had the lamb ragout over pasta. Service was good, but the noise level is very high...hard to have a conversation. We were disappointed to learn that the restaurant now charges $6 for bread as its to come with the dinners.
Great restaurant. Good was fantastic as was service. I was “put off” however by a couple menu statements - “we politely decline any substitutions” - what if there is an allergy issue? Also wine states the pour is 5oz and ice cream $5 per scoop. Seems odd to state these things and also limiting.
The Caprese salad was good but the pizza was just OK. Thin crust was a bit salty and not very crisp. The ambiance is nice and would be OK for kids and large groups. Bar area was very attractive.
An enjoyable dinner with friends - catch of the day was awesome as was the ciopinno and pasta special and wines - our server Marni took good care of us - we will be ba ck
Good food at a reasonable price for the area. We split the lasagna, an app, and desert and left reasonably full.
Taverna has a beautiful setting and opportunity to be a fine restaurant. However, the food was nothing special, and not a great value for the price.
Service was indifferent.
It was a disappointment, as it had been recommended to us by friends.
