About Tavern

Tavern is the third restaurant from the chef and sommelier team of Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne, who also own Lucques restaurant and AOC winebar. This is their West Los Angeles outpost, which serves as a local gathering spot for the Brentwood crowd. Chicly designed by Jeffrey Alan Marks, Tavern encompasses three separate, yet connected spaces: a glass roofed atrium dining room, a large blue walled bar and a café space called the Larder that features casual dining, bakery, retail and prepared foods to go. The restaurant serves Suzanne Goin’s signature California/Mediterranean cuisine with just a touch of a classic American influence.

Beautiful room if you sit in atrium. Our waiter not very attentive. Food only fair. Eggs Benedict very good but Thai salad and pilgrim sandwich very ordinary. Dessert very good.

Excellent and inventive food and very good service. The bar area is a noisy scene however and not very conducive to normal conversation. Expensive, but not super expensive and worth it.

Menu selection was well suited to each individuals wants, service was attentive but not overbearing, portions were the right size, timing of course selections was excellent. Noise level was remarkably good give the large room.

Dinner was very good. But taverns brunches are much better. I think I prefer this restaurant for a Sunday brunch.

The place is great in general but their thanksgiving meal was way overpriced and just average. For 95 pp, they should include more than a $12-15 salad, a $35 entree and a $10-12 dessert. And certainly should include coffee or tea. Disappointed, to say the least, especially given the occasion

This place has been hit and miss since it opened - it's streaky. I have had overly rich and mediocre food, followed by a streak of exceptional food, and recently, spotty and expensive food. This time I had the scallops and the steak. The scallops with Chorizo were really quite good but 2 scallops is a bit shy for the value. The steak was a total disappointment. The rib-eye was so thin, it was almost like a typical steak butterflied and cut in half. It was not over cooked but it had nearly zero flavor and for $49 was incredibly small. For that price and this type of restaurant you should get at least a half an inch to 3/4 inch piece of meat so there is enough depth to get the flavor of the meat.

I tried the other entrees at the table and they were just okay. The swordfish was paper thin and thankfully not over cooked. Again, why so thin on the proteins? Feels like a margin enhancement for a place with too much fixed costs. One gets the sense that if the chef/owner is not actively involved, the quality of the ingredients and the menu wander and are driven by food cost rather than impact. This was a go-to place for my westside business dinners but I am back to wondering where to go. Apparently I am not alone in my thought as the rest of the main dining room was pretty empty while the simpler, lower priced bar was much busier. Will they get back on track or will this be another chef/owner who takes their eye off the ball and focuses on other ventures and restaurants? Someone else will have to tell me because I am not going back any time soon.

I love the ambiance and the service, even though it's pricey. Food is very good, but not the reason for going. A restaurant where the servers are willing to acknowledge/allow a conversation is critical for meeting on a date or with some friends where you want to hear what the others' have to say. Trendy can be fun, but the restaurant is the event -- when the people are the event, I want a place where the food is reliablegreat and we can talk.

We love the ambiance of Tavern, and the service is great. The food at brunch last Sunday did not live up to what we've come to expect. The pork, pork, pork burger was hockey puck, hockey puck hockey puck, the "soft" scrambled eggs were dry and overcooked. Bourbon bloody mary was unimpressive and no one loved the weird raspberry or green bellinis. This is one of our favorite places to eat in LA, so...wah. But we'll be back. Hope to eat better next time.

Environment beautiful, food average, waiter bad. 5 of us at dinner, 3 ordered chicken dish, one pasta, one a vegetable dish! 2 of the chicken plates came out late which held up meal. The Vegetable dish of cauliflower and broccoli was very strange, and the little gem salads over salted! 3 desserts brought out to compensate. Bus staff dropped/shattered glasses behind us - felt like a calamity of errors. Perhaps this is why i was able to secure a 6:45 reservation on a Friday, the day before?

The Tavern salad with chicken and pork belly was very poor, such that I didn't eat it and it was removed from the bill. I appreciated the management not charging for it, but was disappointed that they would serve a salad like this. The chunks of chicken were like they made the chicken last week or bought packaged chicken chunks. It was difficult to get the fork into any of the chunks of chicken and the pork belly chunks were even difficult to chew. My wife had the flat iron steak, ordered medium rare, and it came virtually raw and very stringy/tough. She didn't eat her meal either, so I tried it and came to the same conclusion. We didn't mention this to the wait staff feeling that two bad meals was too much. My daughter ordered the salmon and liked it very much, which was good. Given the prices, and my previous experience at the restaurant, we were extremely disappointed so won't be returning to the Tavern!

I don't live in LA but make a point of stopping at the Tavern when I visit. I especially love the brunch menu on the weekends. The Tavern benedict is my favorite decadent dish. There are plenty of healthy options but how can you pass up challah bread, prosciutto, gruyere, and a meyer lemon hollandaise? Don't even get me started on the fried potatoes, croissants, brisket hash...

Tavern's atrium is one of the nicest settings in LA. Lovely! The service was very good and they serve Equator's coffee from the Bay Area - some of the best coffee out there. Sadly, the food was lackluster at best. I had the three salad combo with not-very curried but over cooked cauliflower dish, tasteless chicken salad and an eggplant dish that was easy to forget. All three were lacking in flavor, texture and visual appeal. It was on par with the buffet at whole foods for $8.99. Disappointing from one of LA's most notable chefs! Next time you want a 3 salad combo, try Joan's on Third. They are fresh, flavorful, artfully prepared with complex flavors and varied textures.

Pretty good, but some details could use some improvement. I went to check in after making a reservation specifying that this was for a birthday and we preferred the "garden" room. The host appeared to have no knowledge of the request for the atrium, so when we were going to be seated, we asked again. We were seated in the atrium after a little rearranging, and it is quite noisy with others right next to you if you're at a table in the middle. The food is good, but overpriced. The cobb salad is pretty good, but it is not chopped as one might expect a cobb salad to be. Also, we ordered a couple of appetizers, and then were charged an amount more than what was stated on the menu (apparently the menu prices were changed, but they were still using some old menus?). No mention was ever made that this was a birthday celebration. Otherwise, service was good. Overall, pricey for what it is, but awesome bacon-wrapped dates!

Although we requested the quiet atrium part of the restaurant the noise level was insanely loud.
We ordered the swordfish which was very expensive $42 and was about 4 oz. should have been informed as we had discussed with waiter we were sharing. Although we shared a salad & appetizer was left hungry. Got dessert. Was $12 but well worth it and we didn’t leave hungry.

Will save this restaurant for lunch. Been many times & enjoyed...

We shared appetizers and some were good & just ok. Stone fruit salad good and the heirloom tomato salad was also very good. Lamb skewers were very bland & very little to eat- 2 small skewers with maybe 4 bites to each skewer. The grilled salmon was excellent. The scallops were just ok, again the fish needed more flavor. The snickers bar dessert was delicious. The prices are high for the amount of food & just ok flavor of some dishes. The sound level was good after we asked the for music to be turned down. We could actually have a nice conversation. Very nice ambiance & excellent service. Maybe we didn't pick the best dishes but I would expect them to al be well seasoned. Never had anything other than excellent dishes at brunch.

We had a great table tucked in the back of the restaurant - the apps were a little small and would have been helpful if our server had been able to advise what we needed more or less of to allow everyone in our party to taste apps. Food was overall very good and the desserts were delish.

The ambiance is a ten. Food...the fried chicken and biscuits would have been much better if it hadn't come slathered in gravy to where the chicken was no longer crisp. Separate the ingredients so the gravy doesn't soak everything up and then you can enjoy the fried texture of the chicken. Also the biscuit...simplify to a more southern buttermilk biscuit with a comparable ratio to the chicken. It was so overly "bready". The bacon wrapped dates were excellent. The avocado toast would be better with a different bread than the one served as a table bread. Maybe a nice toast with toast marks. The bread was so soft and lacked any toastiness. The avocado was so thick on...consider a finer layer or thin slices spread throughout. Garnish with some light herb/spices and thin radish or picked garnish. The egg was very good. Overall a very lazy avo toast with thick soft bread, a mountain of avocado, and just an egg. The lemon ricotta pancakes lacked the lemon! Maybe some lemon zest or a lemon fruit compote. The dried fruit was no appealing with crunchy pistachio. The blueberry was not saucy. Overall a fail on the pancakes which could have otherwise been really really amazing. The fold of the ricotta was well done. Service and atmosphere was excellent. The refill of water was mediocre because we had to ask several times for water refills. The champagne with arugula is overdone. Should be refreshing...instead was so overly herbaceous and tastes like salad in champagne.
