Tavern on the Square Ratings and Reviews
We chose to celebrate NYE at Tavern this year. They had a limited menu but there were enough options to suit even our most difficult dietary restrictions. The food was delicious minus the burrata being softer than we usually prefer. Service was spot on and we were VERY well taken care of by everyone. Thank you to John and the whole staff for making sure we were so superbly taken care of for our NYE celebrations!
1st time! Service and owner were extremely welcoming. Food was very good, especially the cavatelli! Perfectly made and cooked, typical Italian "past'asciutta" my wife had the pappardelle with veal, very very rich sauce! Our friends had the pok pok pork ribs as a starter and they wished they could have had it as a main meal, it was excellent. Pricing is hefty but Portions are generous. Good wines, all private imports, good selections at fair price range. Apparently, the burgers served at lunch are a must, will definitely try it next time.
Thanks John, we had a great time!!!
Food quality & freshness is invariably very good. Service is friendly & efficient. Nice ambiance. For solo dining, the Counter service is excellent. I choose the mezzanine when I have a guest, & they always leave with a pleasant experience.
My best wishes for continuing deserving success.
They had some interested options/specials, but I went with the meatballs. The pasta was extra al dente, but still good. The other meal was the fish special. Good combination of flavours, but just a touch over done. Still quiet edible! Enjoyable and excellent service.
Tavern on the Square was a very pleasant surprise for us. We chose it off a list of Montreal restaurants open Monday nights not expecting that much, and we ended up having one of the better dining experiences we've had in Montreal in the last few years. The food is very tasty, service attentive, and wine list well chosen. We'll definitely return on our next trip to Montreal!
We hadn't been to the Tavern in many months but decided to try it again after hearing positive reviews from friends. As nearby residents, we were especially curious to see the result of recent renovations and some menu changes. We were impressed with our pasta dishes and endive salad. The Tavern now has more competition (3 upscale restaurants across the street) and must ensure that it remains a neighbourhood restaurant of quality and value.
The Tavern is a go to bistro for us. We were a group of 8 including some guests from Vancouver. The service was attentive although the waiter had a slightly patronizing attitude. I ordered my Caesar salad lightly dressed - it came drowning in dressing. I sent it back - my next salad had virtually no dressing. A bit of an exaggeration! Overall the food was average - not as good as in the past. And many favourites have been removed from the menu. Nice ambiance but not rushing back.
Tavern on the Square is my favorite restaurant in Montreal! Because the weather was glorious, everyone wanted to sit outside resulting in vary cramped tables. Food is always very well prepared, but the portions of halibut we ordered were pretty small as were the martinis and wine pourings. Inspite of all that, it's a great place for a fun evening.
We were given a table where they store all the clean glasses and plates and staff was constantly reaching behind our table over us to get clean glasses. Perhaps they should not put a table there at all. Paul the waiter tried hard but we sat down at 7.30 and ordered. Our appetizers arrived at 8.45 and the excuse was they were full . Main meal arrived at 9.30. If you cannot handle a full restaurant maybe higher more kitchen staff. Since this was birthday night they comped our desserts which was nice but the wait for food was much to long
All four of us enjoyed our meals. As one of us said "we all just about licked our plates!" Sitting on the terrasse was most pleasant, with trees around and the terrasse being far enough from the street not to feel the presence of passing cars. Service was excellent.
We were visiting Montreal from Texas and just happened on Tavern! Our waiter, Greg was really skillful and wonderful (along with everyone else), the menu was artful and the items we chose were fabulous, we wanted to try it all... gorged on deserts. Maybe the best food experience for us in a long time. The lowest effort, highest satisfaction dinner....
Food was excellent as always and their specials were very creative - cauliflower mac and cheese and broccoli Caesar. The boeuf bourgignon was delicious. My only problem with this restaurant is the noise level and also I find it very expensive - mainly the appetizers $17 each for broccoli Caesar and a small plate of cauliflower is overpriced. And they've taken my favourite item off the dinner menu - their burgers which are delicious!!
