We enjoyed our evening at the Tavern. The setting on the bay is beautiful. The food is tasty cooked to order and reliably so- we have dined there several times. I had a filet and asked for it rare and it was. Often I find a steak cooked medium rare not rare as I ordered it. One issue is the menu while good is limited. In the summer they have valet parking at no charge.
We tried The Tavern on the Bay during Restaurant Week. We were very pleasantly surprised with the food. Although the menu didn't match what had been posted online, they had ample choices. Most restaurants were offering an appetizer, entree and dessert for Restaurant Week. Tavern on the Bay also included a Caesar salad, making their Prix fix meal four courses. They did not have a choice of desserts however. Luckily we like key lime pie as that was the offering that evening. Our only disappointment was our seating. They have a lovely view of the bay, but we were not seated in the dining room, but rather at a table near the bar. The bar was pretty busy that evening which made it a loud place to be eating.
This was our 1st trip here. We saw the menu on Somers Point Restaurant Week online and were looking forward to it. On arrival, we were told that wasn't the correct menu. It was last years. Choices weren't the same. Drinks took a long time and 2nd drink wasn't the same as the first. Wasn't even drinkable. Dip was good. Salad was a palm sized serving of caesar. The salmon was inedible. Not just by me, but others at the table as well. 3 ordered things off the regular menu and weren't happy with that as well. I think it was seafood risotto. I'm a huge dessert fan & said well at least dessert will be good. No choices. Were just served Key Lime pie. The only dessert I don't eat. The ambience was beautiful, the company was fantastic, the service was great, but the rest was just horrible and way over priced.
Excellent food with good portion sizes. All staff friendly and provided great service. View of bay and the sunset provided a very relaxing environment. A local gem which fits into the small town charm of the area. Dined on a Saturday evening and never felt rushed or hurried, was made to feel it was all about us.
Interesting meal at Tavern On The Bay November 3. Waited for the host for 15 minutes, during that time people employed there kept ignoring us. The host finally appeared...he seemed a little "off". There were 6 more people waiting in a line I made. He reprimanded us and proceeded to heard the customers back into the lobby. We had made reservations, which was not acknowledged, but he did write my last name in s book. We all were seated in bar area...no lights in room nor on table. Cell phone flashlights were needed to see each other and read the menus. I asked for a candle and the reply was "you look mad". My friend stated she was a little confused as to the reception received and he said he was dealing with "complaining customers". Ha......no kidding! He handed us one faded copy of the Price Fixe menu. The ink had run out so you barely could read it. The people next to us did not get a Price Fixe menu. The waiter was a smartas*. Removed our plates the minute we put our fork down. There was no need to do that. The line was not "out the door" waiting to come in. I could tell the people in the lighted dining room were being catered to. We saw a table for 2 in there but were told, "people are sitting there". During our meal at least 6 glasses were broken at the bar. Bread and butter tasted musty.....not good. Rest of meal was "mediocre" - crabcake appetizers were burned, kale salad was child size (would fit in small teacup, salmon was obviously microwaved and smelled strong. Risoto was like cream of wheat. I'd say the chocolate cake which we had for dessert came from Walmart. Believe it or not, they have a great chocolate cake. I wanted to take pictures but it was too dark. One last comment, the host was taking dirty plates, I don't know where he got them, and putting them on credenza outside kitchen. When we left there were 4 plates pilled up. Maybe they were his dinner plates. Will never ever return.
I called to make a reservation someone picked up the phone, was barely audible then hung up on me. I called right back thinking it was a mistake then I received the voicemail. I left a message requesting the reservation- did not receive a call back. I then went on Open Table to make a reservation. They let us book a 4:45 reservation on open table even though they were actually closed for a wedding. About 30 minutes before our reservation, we decided to call again to double check since it all seemed a bit odd. They then told us that they were closed for a wedding. They did say we could come and sit upstairs by ourselves with a wedding downstairs....I guess a nice gesture for a bit odd and uncomfortable? We ended up not going here this year ( we normally go when at the beach).
Labor Day family dinner to end the summer, we chose to dine here at the tavern on the Bay. Boy did we make the wrong choice. Shame really. Took over two hours and to say the service was slow was an understatement. Although the servers where nice, by the time food actually came out, we were all disappointed. Scallops were cooked like they were boiled, no sear on them. Risotto was crunchy, and was barely touched. The steak was just a plate with a steak, which was weird. I mean, if the server said, it’s just a steak on a plate without anything such as some kind of potato or vegetable, it might not have been such a shame. Even the meatballs for the kid at the table was disappointed. And we know how picky kids are, but we all tried them too just because we were so hungry. Yep, dry as the desert meatballs. I’ll make sure to avoid this place in the future.
Embarrassing that on the final day of summer we all believed this place could be good, didn’t even come close. We should have known when the place was empty, and two hours gone by.
What a wonderful place on the Bay. So elegant looking, but casual enough for every day dining. The restaurant is beautiful and the singer is fabulous.The bartenders are very very welcoming and just make you feel so welcome. You'll start out with a great drink and proceed to a equally great dinner. This is the perfect place to go if you want the whole package while at the beach.
Terrible. I called ahead of time to see if I could push back a 7:30 reservation to 8:00. I was told no, completely understood. Arrived at restaurant at 7:30. We were not sat until 8:45. At the bar waiting for our table we ordered cocktails. Every cocktail was incorrectly made (cosmopolitans with cherries and cherry juice, which we paid for and did not send back). When we sat we placed an appetizer order and another cocktail order. Again coctails were incorrect, this time the cosmopolitans had no cranberry juice just straight vodka, gin and tonic came out as a vodka soda with an orange garnish. When our server took our entree order around 9:00 they dissapeared in the middle, half the table ordered the other half did not. When we finally completed our order by 10:15 no food had arrived. 2 tables next to us sat down, ate and left while we waited. Another patron at another table saw The situation and asked the owner to come to the table. When he arrived his poor attitude came along. We calmly started to tell him that we were unhappy. He cut us off and proceeded to argue with and yell at us (raised voice to the point other tables were looking). When he finished we calmly started to again tell him the situation; that we had a reservation at 7:30 and now at 10:00 still did not have any food and every cocktail has been made incorrectly, from the bar to tha table. He then yelled and argued again and told us "you did not get your food because you sat late because you were drinking at the bar, I know because I made your drinks". (Cocktails were wrong and our table was not ready mind you). We asked him to bring us the bill for the cocktails we had received so we could pay and leave. He yelled at us across the table "you are not sticking him with your bill". Again we asked for the bill for the cocktails we received so we could settle up. We never got it. We put money on the table and tipped our server. The worst overall experience we (8 of us) have ever had.
I am a steak lover, and fortunately there are great steak houses throughout the jersey shore, unfortunately this is not one of them. I think you should be required to be certified before you use the term Steakhouse in your name. I happen to be a ribeye fan but this cut was ridiculous. Yes def a rib eye but barely a half inch thick . If you know steak, this is really not a cut that pittsburghs to well . You end up with a charred but tough piece of meat. It is a shame as we loved the ambiance and the service. Tell me it just was a bad night. Please
Weird is the best word that comes to mind when reflecting on the dining experience my family and I had at Tavern on Bay in beautiful Somers Point. There is something "off" about the entire place - lots of wasted space, spotty service, a limited menu with a very odd layout and flow that is exemplified with a small print reference to "Kobe Burger and Crab Cake Sandwich" available too - no price, no description - almost hiding the fact that other items are available even if they are not on the menu. We should have chosen to be seated inside, which seemed to be a more normal, comfortable restaurant environment. Instead we sat on the deck, which is an odd set-up that is awkward, dirty and loud. We ventured for fun upstairs to the "cigar bar" area, not for a cigar, but just to see the space. Nice space with lots of potential, but it is not being used for anything. In fairness, the food was better than expected - in fact, it was good - but did not make up for the weirdness factor that was amplified by our waitress , who is odd and disappeared for long periods of time. If you go at all, go for a beer and fries only, or take a chance and sit inside to see if the experience is better than the half-hearted offerings provided on the deck.
The food was very good but then service was extremely slow and disorganized. We had to ask several times for drinks and then several times to check on our appetizers and dinners. When the food came it was almost cold. This place has all the makings of an excellent restaurant, if not for the management.
We came here for our anniversary. When we arrived there was no one at the hostess desk and then we had to wait for our table. The tables around us were dirty ( no one cleared them), and we waited over 10 minutes for our drinks. The butter that came with our bread was already eaten from a previous table, my wine glass was dirty, and the $40 bone-in steak had no bone. The service was slow and the dead flowers hanging above us really made for a great evening.
My family tried this place for dinner while on our beach vacation and we really enjoyed it. It's a classy venue on the water with excellent food.
It's not a quick bite, which might bother some, and I'd recommend you don't come starving because it takes a while to order and have the bread come out. But my family enjoys the slower pace---more European style of eating. You certainly won't feel pestered by the wait staff.
Our waiter was excellent when he did come to our table. When we asked if there was any seedless bread available, he surpassed our expectations by talking with the chef on our behalf and bringing a flatbread specially for us.
A few things that make this 4 stars instead of 5: 1) the menu was a bit limited (wine selection as well as the food); and 2) there were only a few tables seated when we arrived but we were given the "last" open table in the sunroom overlooking the water, and as we dined only one other family came in, leaving several empty tables in that area. For such a prime location and such delicious food, this restaurant has the potential to be 5 stars easily. A bigger staff and a bigger menu might be the keys to success here.
My wife ordered the special and it was overdone we had to send it back.
We then ordered bacon wrapped scallops bacon not cooked did not eat bacon just scallops
Our server tried her best but good service was not her strong point.
We have eaten here many times before this was just a bad time WE will be back.
Our experience was fantastic. We ordered 3 apps shrimp, scallops, and oysters which all were delicious. The entrees was also tasty swordfish, tuna, and shrimp/scallops. We almost didn't go to this place because of the reviews and I'm glad we didn't judge by those. The view was beautiful and all the service was exceptional and friendly. This is a upper scale facility and we had two kids with us who also enjoyed eating from the adult menu. All the food was food was cooked to our preference, with minimal wait between ordering. Perhaps there were busy days for others, but the quality and service was up to par for us.
Awful experience. We had made 11am Sunday brunch reservations through Open Table for my mother-in-law's birthday. Their website says they serve brunch, and even lists a brunch menu. When we arrived, the place was empty and the woman in the lobby was puzzled as to why we were there. We advised we had brunch reservations. She stated that they haven't served brunch in a very long time, and that no one has bothered to update the website. Note that when my husband called the day before to reconfirm and inquire about parking, no one told him that brunch is no longer served. The woman in the lobby asked if we wanted to stay for lunch, and we said okay as we were already there. As she walked us into the dining room, we saw dirt and hairballs on the floor. There was used silverware on the window ledge, and the tablecloths were filthy from having already been used and not replaced. There was even old food on my daughter's seat, and the room smelled badly. Rather than risk eating food at such a dirty place, we got up and left. It's such a shame that management obviously does not care about this business, as the old victorian style building is quite impressive, as is the location/view.
