It's a place we're dubbing a Certified First Date Safe ZoneTM. And it's open now...
Introducing Taureau, a fondue spot in SOHO helmed by a charismatic Frenchie, awaiting your next first date.
Opened by a seasoned fondue pro (Didier, who perfected his trade at his own Parisian fondue spot for 13 years), the small, space is decked in white and red, spotted with two-person tables and set up for serving one food and one food only: bubbling cauldrons of cheese, oil and chocolate.
This is pretty much all you need to know. Start with cheese, move to meat, finish with chocolate.
And don't worry about the stove-like contraption built into the surface of your table: it's designed to heat up the cauldron of fondue, but remain completely cold to the touch.

Taureau Ratings and Reviews
We really had a great time. Love the simplicity of the menu, makes ordering a breeze. Enough variety to keep you coming back to try different cheeses. Food was delicious and the whole experience was chill. A very nice restaurant yet no frills. Just a really comforting low key vibe and perfect date night spot. Loved it!
Went with 2 friends and we had a great experience. We ordered 2 2-course prix fixe dinners which included a first course of cheese fondue, bread and salad, and second course of choice of meat, which you cook at the table in pots of hot oil or red wine broth, and one 3-course prix fixe which also included chocolate fondue for dessert! Since we got 3 dinners, we were able to choose 2 cheeses and 3 meats. We got the hangar steak, filet mignon and pork tenderloin. The steaks were the best! But everything was delicious and we left stuffed to the gills! Our server was super friendly and helpful.
I would highly recommend, especially on a chilly winter's night.
Outstanding dinner! Most fondue restaurants I’ve been to deliver on the cheese and chocolate courses but fail on the main course. Taureau delivers top quality food satisfaction across the board. Get the slab bacon topping with the cheese...
Went for my daughter’s 12th birthday, and her sister wants to come back in the Spring for her’s.
There were some rowdy children there, but the staff handled them as best they could. They managed to still make our night feel special with skipping 8 year olds making them hold their breath. A little disappointed that fruits that I did not like couldn't be substituted for the ones I did.
There are not a lot of fondue options in New York City. This place is hidden behind an adorable French restaurant so it feels like you are in the know to be able to find it. It’s very small and intimate. And you are sharing food so also romantic. The cheese options were amazing. The service was great. There are good options for vegetarians (vegans need not bother). We had a lovely romantic birthday dinner before heading to City Winery (2 blocks away) for a show. We were so full we could not even finish the cheese or chocolate. They are generous with both as well as the things to dip in. It’s price fix only. No Visa or MC but they called me ahead of time to let me know that.
A tiny fondue restaurant attached to a somewhat larger and more generalized French restaurant. One goes to Taureau with one lover or date, and one shares a dinner of fondue, fondue, and fondue while conversing happily and gazing into one's partner's eyes. The fondue is classic and perfect. (Contrast with the Melting Pot chain, whose fondue is an overdone mess of sixty zillion competing inconsistent flavors.)
Visited Taureau with a friend for fondue night. The selections are simple with the biggest decision being around the type of cheese fondue. Service was well timed, our waiter was attentive and engaging and the food and drinks were delicious. The waiter was also knowledgeable and able to provide details when asked for a recommendation. Fondue is never a cheap/quick dinner experience and we were able to sit and chat without being rushed which was greatly appreciated. I imagine this spot gets quite crowded on busy nights but we were in on a Wednesday night and had the fondue side practically to ourselves so it was lovely. One odd thing is that you have to enter through the main Taureau entrance and then go through a very narrow entry to the fondue side - if using a wheelchair I don't think that part of the dining room would be accessible. I struggled a bit to get through with my cane. Oh and they accept bitcoin and personal but not visa/mastercard - they make this very clear in their reservation confirmation email as well as in the phone call confirmation, so no surprises or issues, the options just surprised me. :) Would definitely recommend this spot!
We were extremely late for our reservation and kept calling to keep the restaurant informed. They were very understanding and allowed us to move our reservation to a later time. The only thing that surprised us is that they only take cash, Amex, personal cheque or BIT COINS!?!? Wth? That seems a little sketchy to me. And they don't even mention this on their website. We only found out because we called to say we're going to be late which then made us even later because we had to find an ATM. Regardless, the cheese fondue is to die for. Worth checking out but make sure you have plenty of cash!
My daughter was determined to do fondue on this last trip to NYC. I got the reservation from OT on a day when we were going to an Improv show. We showed up early for dinner, and they seated us. (it was a Sunday so we opened the place at 5pm). the dinner is based around the fondue, and it is prix fixe. there are choices for the cheese for the apps- i got the Perigord with truffle oil (delicious) and my daughter got the swiss cheese (basic but good). entree i got the chicken breast and my kids got the filet. there is a choice of using oil or broth to cook the meat, we got one of each and they were both good. Dessert was the best: dark chocolate and milk chocolate with fruit and cut up pound cake to dip. yummy.
there is a more limited edition where you can get just the app and dessert.
personally i thought this was fun, but it's a novelty thing for me. if you want to try fondue Taureau is good, though pricey.
I really liked this restaurant. All three of the courses we had were excellent (cheese, meat, dessert). Just make sure that you cook your meat long enough because their 15 second suggestion seemed too short. Also, it was a nice restaurant but it needs to upgrade to a bigger space.
We love this place in general. My wife gets the Fondu and I order from the regular restaurant menu -- which is fantastic. Authentic and savory French food. This time, however, two of the entrees did not come out until 2 people had finished their entrees. I had to get the waiter to ask him about it because he never came to see how we were doing. What upset me the most was that he did not seem very apologetic or concerned. The manager did give us a discount on the next meal so we felt a little better. I just hope the service returns to its usual form.
