About Tastings - A Restaurant, Wine Shop & Wine Bar
When Tastings started in 1990 it was the only fully integrated Wine Shop/ Wine Bar/ Restaurant on the East Coast. About twenty years later, there is still only a handful of establishments in the U.S. such as Tastings. Besides being an outstanding wine shop in its own right as well as a fine restaurant, Tastings offers a large selection of wines by the glass. Wines are offered in flights for experimentation with a meal for a modest fee over the retail price of wines in the shop. Tastings' restaurant serves simple, direct cuisine that allows each customer a gustatory and educational experience in a friendly but professional fine restaurant.

Tastings - A Restaurant, Wine Shop & Wine Bar Ratings and Reviews
Disappointing meal last Saturday: fatty Hot Pot meats, tasteless Texas Red Deer special, odd "mushroom soup" that was more French Onion and soggy bread than mushroom. Salads were simple but perfectly chilled and refreshing, roasted veggies with deer were delicious. We opted for a bottle that the owner, Bill, suggested, but were disappointed (flat taste, thin feel). I'd advise ordering by the glass.
First time visit and it was great. Entrance is through the wine shop and tasting bar. It is small nut very comfortable. Menue was limited nut there are specials posted. Had scallops which were wonderful. You can ask for a particular wine to go with the meal, ask for a recommendation and try some samples to see what you might like. Can get a glass or half glass. That was a fun aspect of the meal. Really lovely service and evening. Definitely going back.
Great food and a great way to try nice wines that you wouldn't otherwise want to pay for. The owner recommended some great wines to go with our meals. We all got flights so we could try several different wine options. It was great fun and we'll definitely be back.
As the name would imply Tastings is attached to a wine shop. Flights are readily available & happily customized. The food is consistently excellent with an emphasis on local, seasonal ingredients. My only complaint is that the restaurant area is a bit tired & dated.
We had not been to tastings in a while and had forgotten why we liked the venue. The food emphasizes local fare and is well prepared. The menu is quite extensive and there are many specials hat change frequently depending on availability of ingredients. The wine selection is endless - this is a retail wine shop. The staff is helpful in pairing wines and open to tasting prior to purchase. The corking fee is reasonable. We will not wait as long to return - Parking also could not be more convenient.
Casual lunch, just burgers, elevated to great experience. The chef/proprietor came out to recommend an exciting flight of red wine pairings with a generous pour. Service attentive, but unobtrusive. Took advantage of the wine shop on the way out- more conversation with owner -
knowledgeable but unpretentious. We had terrific food and wine, and what's more, a lot of fun.
Had a nice dinner at Tastings two years ago so we were looking forward to repeating on our recent visit to Charlottesville. Unfortunately either the restaurant had a bad night or it's gone downhill. Our order was taken quickly and efficiently but the kitchen was slow. It took one hour and forty minutes from ordering until our entrees finally arrived. Appetizer was slow, salad was slower. We were getting ready to leave when entrees arrived. Food was mediocre. The owner took our wine order when we first arrived, but never visited our table again. Adding insult to injury, they added a $7 corkage fee for wine from their own stock. I could understand if we brought our own bottle, but I've never been charged a corkage fee in a restaurant that provides the wine. We told the owner our concerns at the cash register so he gave us a bottle of wine as a peace offering and said that's the best he could do. He's lost my future business.
The best place ever to have wine pairings with food. Bill will pour wine by the glass to compliment food on the menu or you can purchase from the endless wines available in the store. There are always specials on the blackboard, everything is delicious!
Thanks for the memorable evening!
We absolutely loved Tastings! It felt like a local hidden gem of Charlottesville! I read about it on food blogs before traveling to Charlottesville and am so glad that our family got to check it out! The food was great. There's no wine list, but the place is full of incredible wine, so if you tell your waitress what you like, she'll find you something amazing.
Whenever we visit Charlottesville , we always make a point to have a dinner there. The wine is outstanding, you can have a flight of wines by describing what you like or order something you have had on your list of wines to try. The food is delicious too and pairs great with wines. The owner is very knowledgeable regarding wines and has an amazing inventory on hand. There are a lot of wines that I have not found anywhere else. This time we had our friend with us and took him there. He also loved it. Highly recommend for great food, wine, attentive staff and a non-pretentious atmosphere. I wish we lived closer to have a chance to visit more often!
Food was amazing! The menu has a French inclination. The chef personally discusses the wine selection with everyone. The waitstaff is not incredibly knowledgeable about the wine but that's probably because the chef is so involved with your wine choices. If you are looking for a French restaurant with crisp white napkins and tablecloth and attentive snobby waitstaff, this is not the place. If you're looking for a restaurant that is laid-back and caterers towards your experience and is all about the food and wine you'll appreciate this restaurant.
I've know Tasting for more that 15 years visiting when I am in town.
Made a reservation via open Table for 715pm. Arrive and were nicely greeted. There were about 15~20 people at various tables with 2 tables of 6. We (2) of us were seated and then ignored. There were two servers and the chef pitched in when he could. Got water waited for wine. My wife got a nice Pino Grigio and I order a red wine flight. Again a long wait before the chef arrived, asked if I liked Bordeaux, then came back with 3 full size glass put them down and left. Never told us what they were, no explanation and never returned to check on our meal. We waited for salad and then were brought 3 bread rolls. Finally dinner arrived, it was fine, we opted to skip dessert. Order our check and it came as a single total amount for the credit card, no breakdown listing so we have no idea what the wine flight cost etc. Sadly disappointed. We left the serve a good tip it was not her fault, she was overwhelmed.
At first we were not certain we were in the right place since the restaurant is hidden behind the wine store. But once we were greeted and then seated we were happy to have walked the short distance off of the downtown plaza. The burger was great, as were the salad nicoise and duck breast with lentil salad. We will certainly return the next time we are in the area.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our oyster stew and lobster bisque at Tastings. The chef himself served us with good humor and an excellent and appropriate wine selection. We also enjoyed the conversations of our fellow diners. If you are looking for well prepared food and "local" atmosphere, this is a good choice.
Tastings is my go-to choice in Charlottesville. Not only does chef/owner Bill Curtis use the freshest exotic meats, sea foods and vegetables available, both local and flown in, in his French-inspired American cuisine, but Bill's extensive inventory of hard-to-find wines in his wine shop (located on the restaurant premises) is available to enjoy with your meal at a modest corkage charge. We recently enjoyed Tastings' wonderful duck cassoulet, local wild mushrooms in pastry, and local veal chop with a 1998 Vieux Telegraphe from Chateauneuf du Pape, each of which was nothing short of spectacular.
We had frequented Tastings a number of times back probably 15-20 years ago, always had great experiences. Fantastic wine store out front of the restaurant. Great location, easy parking. This time the Owner, Chef, Wine expert (Bill Curtis) was much more active. He mixed with our table of four, made excellent wine pairing suggestions and really added to our evening. Highly recommend this experience!!
Very funky place. Have to go past the wine bar/wine store to get to the restaurant, which is small but very comfortable. Food is very good as is the wine selection[nice to go to a restaurant where you can buy a bottle of wine that you can take home if you enjoyed it]. Would definitely recommend this to others & will come back again...
