Taste Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Taste impressed us as a place devoted to upscale members of our African-American community. As they filled up on a Friday, I saw only about four white people, including us. I'm not fond of segregation, maybe the rest of Dayton needs to get to know this place; we were well-served and the food was fine. Taste changes during the day, from lunch to happy hour to dinner to jazz club, with a different menu for each. We had none of those, but rather the Restaurant Week specials. Calabrian crab chili was addictive but I felt the crab was lost in it. The chicken carbonara pleased my wife, and I thought the lamb chops were rave-worthy; big portion in a peppery brown gravy. The Cajun theme of the food is not too aggressive. We'll be back!
This is a nice addition to North Dayton where there are so many chain restaurants. The food was very good. We had the Taste parmesan fries and they were delicious. I had the creole catfish which came with collard greens and macaroni cheese. It was very tasty and there was a lot of it. My husband had the short ribs. The ribs were good, but disappointed that it said that it came with yams and root vegetables and I think that there was one yam and one carrot.
The service was very slow. It was not busy and our glasses were left empty for long periods of time. It took a long time to get our food as well.
Overall it was okay and I would probably give it a second chance.
The Taste has a automatic reserve your table link on its website. I had wanted to surprise my friend and have all her girlfriends meet there for a causal Sunday afternoon brunch/birthday party. I went and reserved the table as requested the, portal gave me their suggested time based off of the party number and the reservation was confirmed.
When arriving at 1:45 pm to the restaurant I immediately notice that there was not a single car at the restaurant. Just to be sure I didn't miss anything I double checked the time on the doors that stated the restaurant would be open from 1 to 4pm. Again there was no one there. So the surprise was ruined and we took our business else where.
My party of 4, one had an emergency and could not make it) thoroughly enjoyed the Gospel Brunch at The Taste Restaurant on Sunday, Jue 2. This was my fourth time at The Taste Restaurant and I had no complaints. The chef made the best omelet that I have ever had. Their sweet potato waffles were delicious as well.
Our reservation worked out perfectly. Our table was ready and waiting and we were shown to our table immediately. I truly appreciated the Open Table reeservation.
My group plans to return the first Sunday in July for the next Gospel Brunch.
Everything turned out great! i invited a few friends to share some dinner and to listen to a musical showcase. The show was awesome! Our dinner was great. Everything on the menu is very tasty. We tried the crabcakes and soul rolls for appetizers. The drinks were made perfectly. Great night overall!
I took my Mother to Taste for the Mother's Day Buffet Brunch. While the food was good (although I did not see a couple of items the restaurant had advertised); the service was spotty at best. Although we were told that our table was being set up, when we were seated we found we did not have silverware or napkins. After waiting for several minutes, I took them from an empty table in the back. Other issues occurred throughout. A 20% gratuity was added to the bill for our party of 2! I no longer live in Dayton and now live in a much more expensive city. However, I have never been automatically charged a 20% tip for a party 2; much less for a buffet where we had to get our own food!
Like many buffets it is difficult to maintain good food quality and temperature. As a result, some very tasty "warm" items. $15.95 per adult was on the high side for this quality meal but the shocker was the auto 20% service charge (not listed as tip) for the meal. When the bill comes, there is still a spot to give a tip. We saw our server twice, once for drink order and then we caught him to give us the check. The waiter should have indicated clearly that the tip was included but "why?"this is a great deal for him. How many people would simply add 15% onto the bill and not even notice it? I almost did. I want to try this restaurant again but don't feel I can support this deceptive pricing. When did a tip go to 20%? Shame on you!!
WafflesThisThis Restaurant Has Amazing Food That Has Something For Everyone. ThIs Time We Went For The Brunch And The Variety Was Great For A Smaller Restaurant. Fried Chicken And Wallfles! French Toast That Is Killer, Hearty Biscuit Gravy. The Only Downside Is The Price For Kids. Our 3 Year Old Who Ate Part Of One Plate Of Food Still Cost The Full $11. They Also Have Great Dinners And Live Music.
Can't say enough about "Taste". Great atmosphere, friendly and attentive staff, dinners were great. Met the owner and he has a great passion and commitment for providing a top-notch experience. This is my new favorite restaurant in Dayton. Late Friday they added a jazz/soul/funk band and they were great, too.
Good was delicious. I got the short ribs. Yum! It is a upscale soul food restaurant. I ordered too much food so couldn't eat it all. My husbands catfish was a smaller portion than he expected so of course he finished off my short rib. The black eyes pea soup was best I ever had. My husband doesn't like black eyed peas. He tried to eat all mine up-he loved the way they prepared theirs. It's great. We'll be back.
The menu is a bit limited for my taste. Pastas and cream sauces, grits. I had the cajun shrimp pasta that had a heart symbol next to it signifying heart healthy. Even though it was cajun, I could detect very little spice. Also, the sauce was very creamy and I wondered why it was heart healthy. The restaurant is very nice inside and we had a good waitress who was very attentive. I was with 8 other people and I don't know how they all felt about their food. I know a few were not excited but cannot speak for all.
Our first time at this O.T. Find. The gumbo appetizer had a great, smoky flavor. The Taste salad had a light, flavorful dressing, complemented by sweet cornbread croutons. We enjoyed fish in a light but crunchy cornmeal coating. For dessert, we shared the sweet potato pecan pie, baked in a flaky crust. Our only disappointment was that we couldn't stay to hear the live band setting up for 8 pm.
I went to taste for my wedding anniversary. We were not sure how bit was going to be, but the website and menu looked promising. At first glance the restraint looks very modern and the bar looks inviting. We were greeted at the door be the host and seated very quickly. My wife ordered a drink which she says was made very well. My wife ordered the chicken and waffle, and I ordered the short ribs. The food was spectacular. I was surprised to be eating this great of food in Dayton. We finished the meal off with one of the best strawberry cakes I gave had. The whole experience was amazing. I highly recommend eating here. We will be coming back soon!
We had a wonderful time and they have improved their service and menu. There menu was excellent when they first opened and then it went down hill and we hadn't been back in a long time. I gled we went back as we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of food and service. They were very gracious, helpful and present.
The food was prepared perfectly and came out in a timely manner.
We would highly suggest dining at Taste.
We really want Taste to be successful as we need fine dining in Trotwood.
We came out to celebrate my mother's 65th Birthday and she/we had a ball. The live music was awesome, the server was great, the food was very tasty, the atmosphere wad very classy and fub! We had a great time. Thanks to the band member who sung to my mother and danced with her! That made her night! Looking forward to another celebration!
We throughly enjoyed the experience. Food was tasty, however we really doubt that any items were heart healthy. They all seemed to be high fat and or high salt. By taste I think the gumbo probably had three days the rda of salt. The live band was also exceptional. After trying to find your place with GPS using your address, we finaly found you and entered from Salem Ave. We aren't familiar with the area since we drove in from Springfield. I hope you have real success.
LOVED the blend of down-home dishes with elevated touches: truffled fries, mac and cheese with smoked gouda and three others, crispy on the outside catfish that literally melted in the mouth, and gumbo with a dark, dark roux and just the right amount of smoky heat in the back of the throat! I am ready to try more dishes.
I did not enjoy the exaggerated use of simple syrup at the bar, though. Will remember to order basic and classic next time.
The menu was great and the ambiance is wonderful. I remember when the place used to be an Applebee's and it hardly looks like what it used to be. The set up is nice and warm and very upscale looking. This was only my second time there, the first time the meal was excellent but this last night on the 6th though the service was excellent and most of the food was great, I had steak this time and it was kind of tough. It was pan seared and I'm no chef, but I know it's hard to cook a steak on top of the stove. I will most definitely go back, the bar and bartender were very professional and catering. They make a great martini too!! Best ever. I see now that this will be a place I will continue to frequent on date night.
Everyone in our party enjoyed themselves. My colleagues and I wanted a nice restaurant, with good food to meet and discuss work related issues. The prize went to the Chicken and Waffles entree', but the Greek salad and salmon was pretty tasty as well. Overall it was a Great evening and we (8 in all) agree Taste will definitely be added to the top of our list of favorite restaurants to dine.
