I cannot comment on the quality of the food or the value of it, as my partner and I aborted our stay, paid our bill and walked out after having a cocktail. It was a beautiful Thursday night around 7pm, and there were no patrons inside the dining room and maybe four tables outside (including us). Our waiter told us a list of specials (which was incomplete, as we later learned), and took our drink order. Despite the relative lack of activity, our waiter essentially disappeared after delivering our drinks. Unless he was also cooking food in the kitchen, there was no plausible explanation for his lack of presence - bad sign #1. As we sat there, we saw the table next to us reject a bowl of soup for being cold -- bad sign #2. The soup is cold, yet there is basically NOBODY here?? BTW, the soup was not delivered by the waiter, who was still M.I.A. at that point. We are not usually big bread eaters at restaurants, but so much time went by that we ate an entire basket and finished our cocktails before the waiter finally reappeared. At that point we were so frustrated and upset that we politely told him we changed our minds about eating dinner and asked for the check. I have to add that we have never done that -- truly . Waiter delivered the check promptly but once again went missing. The inside dining room was still empty, and the other three occupied tables outside were the only patrons, so where the heck was he? I left and went to the restaurant next door to put our names on their list while my partner went inside and had the bartender, who was the only visible employee, settle our bill. BTW, as we were waiting and stewing over our cocktails, we saw an endless parade of people going to the restaurant next door. I consider that bad sign #3 that something was amiss about Taste. Fortunately, the other restaurant was able to accommodate us quickly despite the fact that the place was absolutely packed. Next time we'll skip Taste and head directly next door.
My husband loves the fabulous Burrata cheese & tomato jam. He also ordered the beef tacos & loves them. I tried something different, chicken a la Joe, but was disappointed. The white meat was dry & the piece of dark meat was undercooked! Not flavorful at all. Perhaps they had a different chef that evening.
We loved this restaurant when it was Jerry's.
Wow, has it gone downhill. Only two waiters and two busboys for the whole place...inside and out! We had raved about this restaurant to our friends, and it was their first time there. Food was really disappointing, but the service was even worse.
Taste on Chestnut is a wonderful neighborhood restaurant with pleasant outdoor dining, or indoor dining in either a living room or kitchen environment. The service is friendly and efficient. Choices range from sandwiches to full entrees, with multiple cuisines represented. On this occasion, I chose a terrific minestrone soup to start: a light broth chocked with veggies and a pesto/parmesan crostini floating in it; my wife had a carb cake that was all crab, minimal cake! Being a lobster roll guy, I chose the lobster BLT as my entrée, and it was a winner! Tons of fresh lobster meat with minimal fuss, just good solid sandwich. My wife had bronzini, a seabass that was excellent. Wines are sufficient, moderately priced as are food items. Great to have such a fine place nearby!
Great restaurant in an easy to get to and easy to park neighborhood. Consistently good food and friendly service. The burrata appetiter is wonderful. It's our "go-to" place when meeting friends from the northern Chicago Suburbs -- a place we can have conversation without shouting at one another.
Food is good, service is OK. We came early on Saturday night and only few tables were occupied. However, as our dinner progressed, tables were all occupied, and the noise level was too high and it felt claustrophobic, because tables are way too close to each other. After all, this is not a pizzeria, or a pub, but quite pricey restaurant, and one could expect some little privacy there, however, a guy at the next table was literally touching me with his elbow. I would say maybe at least two tables have to go, and it will be an OK place. Also, the entrance mat to the restaurant looked like it was not cleaned for months. Food and service was fine.
I highly recommend Taste on Chestnut. Just about everything about it is good. The food is very tasty, the menu is broad enough to offer something for everyone, the service is excellent, the ambience is charming and pleasant, the prices are reasonable. If you're eating in or anywhere near Winnetka, give this place a try for brunch, lunch or dinner. You won't be disappointed.
This was our 3rd special occasion Sunday Brunch and it doesn't cease to amaze... The grilled Wedge salad is amazing. I've never had is anywhere else. The seafood station is excellent highlighted by giant peeled shrimp, smoked salmon, and raw peppered tuna. Breakfast station, and entre station with crab cakes, steak, chicken and vegies. DESSERTS: Homemade pies, cakes, cookies, muses, and fresh fruits. Just loosen your belt and enjoy... We'll definitely be back for the next one.
We had dinner here and enjoyed the food very much. The pork chop was thick and succulent and was prepared just right. Mac and cheese was well prepared. Dessert was a simple scoop of Homer's caramel ice cream. Wait staff was attentive but not intrusive. Overall, a very pleasant dining experience.
This place was wonderful and I could not believe that there were open tables at the last minute. Folks don't know what they're missing here. I have eaten this chef's food before at one of his prior employer country clubs. I was impressed then and I remain impressed. This the the value that Michael was when it first opened and nobody had heard of it. Delicious. Priced right. Calm atmosphere conducive to conversation without having to yell. Love it. I'm 50. I like everything from dives to fancy schmancy - as long as it's done well for its genre. The genre here is excellent food that isn't overly pretentious in a calm atmosphere at a price that is fair. It achieves on all fronts. Go.
The entire meal was fantastic. We had the bacon wrapped figs which were so good. We ordered two salads to share, the caesar and the mixed greens, both were great. Two of us had the Branzino, which is served with cauliflower puree (which you would swear were mashed potatoes.) The fish was excellent, it is a very mild fish and was prepared perfectly. Two of us had the roasted chicken with peppers and potatoes, which comes out so beautifully you almost don't want to disturb the dish. We also had the jambalaya, which was a special, and it did not disappoint. No need to head downtown when we have a first class restaurant right here in Winnetka!
Maybe it was a bad night for them... A couple months ago we had a fabulous experience at Taste. My wife had called in the reservation for 4, and it was such a good experience - nice table, great food, nice service - that we suggested it for another evening out for four. We reserved through Open Table this time, and were seated at a table right in front of the open kitchen. We have had kitchen seating at other places, and in most of those cases, it was a treat. At Taste, it was in an out of the way, dark and dreary area, and it felt like inferior seating. If that were the only problem, though, I wouldn't have written this review. We ordered drinks, salads and main courses. At that point, we asked for more bread - we had to ask no less than four times, and finally, when it arrived during the main course, it looked like scraps from other tables were thrown into our bread basket. Salads arrived on time, but one salad was not dressed. The bottle of wine was fine. After a much, much too long period of time, main courses arrived, and it seemed as if they had been sitting under the heat lamps for a while - the food was dried out. I'm not sure why one time it was great, and the second time it was not, but 50% is not good enough for a nice, pricey restaurant. Other people can take their chances; we are not likely to be back.
We returned to the Taste on a wintry night and received a very warm and friendly welcome. We were pleased to see two of our favorites still on the menu, the lobster roll and the crab cake. Sea scallops were featured as a special with a creamy risotto. It was excellent! My wife had her favorite the lobster salad. It was another wonderful dining experience!
This is the latest and best food establishment in this location. Retaining the homey atmosphere that is so welcoming, Taste provides an upscale but not overly pricey dining experience. Service is consistent and efficient. The food was wonderful; we had cauliflower bisque and cream of spinach soups to start, and both were rich and delicious. The special entree was huge diver scallops with chipotle risotto and Brussels sprouts and it was incredible. We have been here before and always had good meals, but this was the best. Taste has become on of the best restaurants on the North Shore!
