Tartufo Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
The first thing that stood out was the small size of the space. The restaurant became very loud even with only few two tops and small groups dining. However, the restaurant is still remarkably classic, and richly Italian. The big windows and Romanesque façade behind the bar wash the setting with a warm old-world feel. Still, with the location being in Newton Center, the patronage are dressed "smart casual", and are vividly contemporary. The wait staff are welcoming, and a woman who I believe to be the owner even stopped by our table to ask how everything was. The wine selection was abundant and reasonably priced. The cocktails looked cute, but emphatically near to the original classic drinks they mimic. The food was authentic with hints of American influence. Our balsamico salad was fresh and lovely. The lobster ravioli was a safe choice, I'll admit, but one that I would never regret. The lobster cream sauce is caloric but the kind of indulgence that seems to shake off the guilt of enjoying it. It seemed like everyone working there stopped to say "thank you, goodnight!" as my guest and I left.
Tartufo is an excellent choice for couples looking for a romantic evening, or even friends catching up over some apps and wine. The prices definitely made my guest think twice, but the generous portions and exceptional service made every penny worth it. Thank you for a great evening!
We had an outstanding dining experience at Tartufo on a recent Saturday night. We had an early reservation and were greeted warmly and the waiter was very informative and helpful. The food was the best we have had in a while. I had the home made raviolis and my companion had the veal piccata. Both were delicious. The it was busy but relatively quiet. We would definitely go back there again.
Fortunately we were seated on the second floor which is quiet. The first floor is extremely loud. The first waiter had a bad attitude but the second one was really helpful and friendly. They forgot our beers initially. Overall the food was good but a little over-priced.
This is a neighborhood gem. The freshest ingredients. The nicest staff makes this our go to special place. Oh!!! did I mention the best tasting food around. NO heavy sauces, beautiful presentation and great taste. A winner. Don't forget to make a reservation though. Others know this is a must dine local fare.
The food was fine... the tuna tartar and tiramisu were very good. Other food was fine.
Our issue was with the fact that the waiter rushed us to order drinks and then dinner. We were visiting with a friend and felt pushed to order. There was an error in the bill that was quickly resolved. The manager inquired at the table as to whether there was a problem with the bill and we assured him it was resolved.
On the way out I asked to speak to the manager. I told him the bill problem was not an issue. I explained, however, that we felt we had been rushed. He said that they counted on 2 hrs for a dinner. I pointed out that as we spoke it was 2 hrs from our reservation and added that it has been my experience that managers/owners wanted to be told when there was an issue. He then told me that he has had the restaurant for 14 years. And I responded that that was fine and apparently he did not want our feedback. We went out the front door and while we were saying goodbye to our friend, the owner came out and asked that I wait for just a minute to speak to him further. When he did not return in five minutes, we left.
This is my first time to Tartufo and selected it based on reviews. I read the food was very good and decided it was a good place to celebrate my (Italian) father's 75th birthday with family (party of 7).
They had our table ready on time. The entire place was very loud. Some sound deadening material on the walls and ceiling would do wonders. Our waiter was pleasant, but didn't go out of his way to make things accommodating. We had to repeatedly ask for our water glasses to be filled throughout the evening, one of our meals was late (5 minutes after the rest were served), and never offered us coffee during dessert.
The food quality was pretty good, but the prices for both food and drink are a way on the high side. It's Italian. Pasta is cheap, even home made pasta.
To finish things off, they tacked on a "gratuity" of over 20% ($60 on a bill of $291). Pretty absurd for any restaurant, never mind one in Newton.
This was an underwhelming experience and will not be returning.
This was our third visit to Tartufo and we were dissappointed. The waiter took a very long time to tell us the specials and then take our order and was quite rude. One of the meals was not even close to what was ordered although it was replaced pretty quickly with the correct order. The risotto was bland, a gummy consistency not as described on the menu. The scallop appetizer was in a weirdly sweet sauce. The best thing we ordered was the tuna tartare which was very good. It was very loud and difficult to have conversation.
Very disappointed that when presenting the evenings specials,Lamb chops and Branzino along with special salad with lobster. We ordered the specials only to be surprised at the sticker shock when we got the bill. We have gone to the restaurant on many occasions and this ruined our experience as all the specials were very over priced given the price point of the restaurant.
We were a party of 6 seated upstairs for a family get together. Maybe it was because there had been a big BC football game that day, but the place was extremely loud - we were practically shouting to be heard. Cocktail was overly sweet. Service was erratic. Food was pretty good. Nothing special. I found the overall experience mediocre. I would not recommend it.
While we like the location and the service of the restaurant, our food experience has been mixed. Some nights it comes piping hot off the stove with a fresh Italian experience. Other nights like our last one, service was good but the food was good and warm - but not fantastic. Seating is usually available upstairs but the price you pay is it feels just a little bit dated.
I have eaten at Tartufo many times with my family, and we consider it one of the best restaurants around. The Italian food is authentic and delicious. The service is excellent. It's a go to place for a great dinner that leaves everyone feeling good. It's not cheap, but it is also much better than a lot of restaurants that cost more. Nice intimate atmosphere as well. A bit of Italy in Newton Center.
