Tartufo Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
A wonderful, lively place with sweet managers, great server staff, and brilliant chefs. They made possible a great mini-reunion of four high school friends now in our seventies. The straciatella soup is divine, as is the lobster risotto, and the tuna tartare.
What a sweet little restaurant in Newton Center. Would be great for a date. Menu looked great. It was hard to choose. Sadly. I was not wildly impressed with the cod special that I chose. It was cooked beautifully, but lacked any great flavor. Same with the spaghetti and sautéed spinach-that’s exactly what it was-very little flavor. I will go back, though and try the lobster ravioli!
This was my third (and last) time at Tartufo. We were again seated in the upstairs, which is very unremarkable compared to the cozy downstairs. The soup special (pumkin and potato) was okay...but a bit watery. I ordered the house special pasta dish, which had a mushroom and truffle sauce. The button mushrooms were too thick and the whole thing seemed more like a mushroom stroganoff. Very disappointing. My husband had the veal, which he said was just "okay."
Although the first time I visited, I was very happy with the food, the same could not be said about my second visit. I decided to try it one more time because of the proximity to our house, but was disappointed. I will not go again....there are too many other restaurants that have more tasty offerings.
My wife and I had a wonderful anniversary dinner at Tartufo this week. The ambiance was lovely, the food was fantastic, the presentation was delightful, the server and owner/greeter could not have been nicer, and the bill was very reasonable. This is a North End-level meal and experience in the suburbs and I recommend it highly.
The hostess was wonderful, she seated us right away. The waiter seemed distracted and it felt like he was rushing us. When we told him we were not ready to order dessert yet, he came over two minutes later, not noticing that one of our party was not at the table. We declined dessert and decided to leave. The food was excellent and the other servers were polite and attentive. The noise was loud due to a party in the room, but there was space between the tables and we were able to hear each other’s conversation. Overall, it was an ok evening.
Food was good but service less so! Server had to visit our table three times as he couldn't remember what we ordered as he hadn't written it down. They then brought out one wrong dish. Staff although there were plenty of them weren't particularly friendly and we payed the check and walked out with no one saying a word. Wouldn't return although would consider a takeout.
The first thing that stood out was the small size of the space. The restaurant became very loud even with only few two tops and small groups dining. However, the restaurant is still remarkably classic, and richly Italian. The big windows and Romanesque façade behind the bar wash the setting with a warm old-world feel. Still, with the location being in Newton Center, the patronage are dressed "smart casual", and are vividly contemporary. The wait staff are welcoming, and a woman who I believe to be the owner even stopped by our table to ask how everything was. The wine selection was abundant and reasonably priced. The cocktails looked cute, but emphatically near to the original classic drinks they mimic. The food was authentic with hints of American influence. Our balsamico salad was fresh and lovely. The lobster ravioli was a safe choice, I'll admit, but one that I would never regret. The lobster cream sauce is caloric but the kind of indulgence that seems to shake off the guilt of enjoying it. It seemed like everyone working there stopped to say "thank you, goodnight!" as my guest and I left.
Tartufo is an excellent choice for couples looking for a romantic evening, or even friends catching up over some apps and wine. The prices definitely made my guest think twice, but the generous portions and exceptional service made every penny worth it. Thank you for a great evening!
We had an outstanding dining experience at Tartufo on a recent Saturday night. We had an early reservation and were greeted warmly and the waiter was very informative and helpful. The food was the best we have had in a while. I had the home made raviolis and my companion had the veal piccata. Both were delicious. The it was busy but relatively quiet. We would definitely go back there again.
Fortunately we were seated on the second floor which is quiet. The first floor is extremely loud. The first waiter had a bad attitude but the second one was really helpful and friendly. They forgot our beers initially. Overall the food was good but a little over-priced.
This is a neighborhood gem. The freshest ingredients. The nicest staff makes this our go to special place. Oh!!! did I mention the best tasting food around. NO heavy sauces, beautiful presentation and great taste. A winner. Don't forget to make a reservation though. Others know this is a must dine local fare.
