I think overall nice experience yet think too crowded in main dining areas. I was crammed in corner yet worked out. The tomato soup, cedar planked squash, siraccha ribs, crab cakes and salmon delicious. My cocktail tasted fine yet glass small and not full. Dessert tasty along with port. Nice to have balloons for Birthday and sorbet with candle.
This was my favorite restaurant when I lived in Monterey in the 90’s. I returned 20+ years later and was pleased to discover that it’s even better now.
Great service and food!!!
One of our favorite places in Monterey. We both thought it was a little off - but could have been us...had the shrimp and grits and a special of the day. Both were good but did not make the usual mark on us.
This was mine and my husband's first experience at Tarpys. The restaurant was recommended by a friend who thought we might enjoy it. The only recommendation she made was to look at the menu beforehand to see if there was anything I could eat since I am a vegan. Fortunately I was able to get the quinoa salad which was delicious and a side of fries ( a go to for any vegan if all else fails) One recommendation I would make is that Tarpy's consider putting more vegetarian and vegan options on the menu as well as gluten free.
Eight of us gathered for a small baby shower for two of the ladies in our group. The corner location in the room was excellent. We got several appetizer / small plates and split them among us. Everything we ordered was excellent in flavor, and the amount was perfect. (A few of the women have dietary restrictions, and Tarpy's could accommodate.) Definitely would consider Tarpy's for a similar occasion again. Bravo!
Consistently excellent food and service. Menu is fit for foodies. The menu offers items that are different and great tasting.
Always a great place. Quintessential Monterey County . . . from the wine list to the art on the wall.
Celebrated our anniversary and went back twice
Once again, great meal. Meatloaf was excellent. Waiter was very attentive.
I needed a place for my husband’s 50th surprise bday where we could have our own room to celebrate with family and close friends. We were 20 people, ranging in age from 1-1/2 to 84, with dietary restrictions, and demanding appetites for high quality food and drink. Tarpy’s met all of our requirements, and then some. Just a lovely time was had by all! Highly recommend! Thank you!
We had terrific food and a wonderful waitress! Where we were seated though, it was very loud, as we were seated by a number of large groups. Other than that, I’d recommend Tarpys Roadhouse!
Delicious food. Friendly staff. Quaint setting. Loved it!!
First time visit and I'm hooked. Took my girlfriend for Valentine's. The whole experience was smooth. Prices were great and the portions were unreal. We were absolutely stuffed.
Great server with great service
Had the lobster special main course. Very poor quality, tasted like it had been frozen for a couple of years. However, the presentation was fine, and the potatoes served with it were great. The apple salad, the crab cake starter and the ollanenberry pie were also excellent.
Valentines day dinner. Tarpy's is always a go-to place for good food. I had the Bison short ribs and Rita has the ribeye. Both were excellent. Service was excellent and unhurried. We brought our own wine from the neighboring Roadhouse wine bar - Free corkage.
Wonderful Valentine's Day lunch in the patio. We took our elderly dog with us-he loves Tarpy's too. Tasty food, attentive waitress, cosy outdoor courtyard. Still a favorite!
We love Tarpy's, and we go there often. This time, however, seating was careless. The restaurant has several rooms of multiple sizes, and the hostess was crowding one room at a time, instead of distributing guests as we came in. For us, it meant we were seated in a small room next to a large (and relatively loud) group, while many other rooms in the restaurant seemed to be empty.
We should have asked to change, but we only noticed after we had already received our drinks. Next time I will be alert.
Always dependably good! The bread is The Best!!
remember the place as one of the options for my son’s wedding rehearsal dinner some years ago. we ended up somewhere else. finally had a chance to try tarpy’s and not a bit disappointed. we arrived a few minutes early and they were very accommodating. our server was very attentive and named us the special for the evening. my gf had the halibut special and I had a delicious meatloaf dinner. we topped it off with a yummy lollieberry pie. overall a wonderful dinner experience at tarpy’s!
Very nice place, but too many tables to close to each other for my taste. Also, they need to work on their desserts. Besides that the food was excellent, service was excellent (although our entree took a while to come), and value was excellent.
Nick is an absolute gem. The food is amazing, but Nick makes the experience every time.
What made my evening special was our waiter, Devereux. Upbeat and found a cube of ice for my sore neck that relieved my pain so I could enjoy my meal.
We use to love Tarpy’s but somewhere along the way, the quality and value have gone downhill. We will not be going again.
Way too noisy and crowded.....waiter unprofessional.....disappointing cob salad
Lovely patio, consistently good food. Wait staff has been around for awhile, a good sign.
Met up with family on the patio. Love Tarpy’s
We loved our reception experience after we got married at the Monterey Stone Chapel next door was amazing. Waitor was a really nice guy! Made our day as special as he could! I did have a hair in my food :( but he quickly took it and got me a fresh plate in minutes!! Thanks Tarpys!!!
Girls Night: food was delicious. Service is always great. Tables are always tight. But a wonderful night to enjoy great food and friends
I had my wedding at Tarpy’s, and have been coming back ever since, over twenty years now!!! Our family celebrates: birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s day, at Tarpy’s. We also enjoy everyday lunches and dinners as well. Nick and Alfredo are our waiters of choice, they provide superior service!!!
Great Happy Hour. We had a party of 10 and we were very comfortable. I loved the calamari and the fish tacos. Friendly, experienced server. We sat outside on the patio under the heater, it was perfect.
I am a local and usually satisfied with this restaurant. However, I made a notation on my reservation that is was my birthday and preferred a quiet table, if possible. My birthday was NOT acknowledged and we were put in a room in a corner with 3 other big tables. Room was too claustrophobic and not quiet at all. The table next to us acknowledged the little girl's birthday and presented her with a dessert with a candle. Pretty disappointed they did not pay attention to detail on my reservation. My boyfriend ordered the Angus Burger and I had the Salmon - also ordered a bottle of Josh Pinot Noir. The food and wine was good.
Despite living in Virginia, Tarpy's has been a favorite for many years. For Saturday Jan 27 we had been dreaming about a convivial lunch out on the patio. Upon arrival, we were told the patio is closed. We said we came 300 miles for lunch "on the patio". Moments later, the patio was opened Well done Tarpy's.

Our waiter was outstanding and the food delicious. We will return....... and so will our friends who had their first Tarpy's experience Friday night
Reliable service and great food always makes Tarpy's a great choice.
The salads we ordered were excellent; very fresh produce. I had the Salmon salad, cooked to perfection. My friend had the Cobb salad, I think it's the best on the peninsula.
Not sure we have had a better clam chowder! It’s outstanding! Always tasty dishes and very consistent quality.
Most in my party 6 were happy with their food. I , however ordered a steak that was tough and fatty and lacked seasoning. The best I can say is that it was cooked medium rare which is how I like it. I was very disappointed. I should have said something at the tiime but usually you get out of sync with the rest of the dining party.
