Tarpon Bend Raw Bar & Grill Ratings and Reviews
The food and service were great but my only criticism is the fact that the restaurant keeps all of its doors and windows open (even though it’s hot and muggy out) for “ambiance” but all that does is make the folks that opted to eat inside feel stupid for eating inside! Dumb comment I know but I had to say it.
I ordered the Cedar Plank Salmon medium but when it arrived it was cooked to a crisp. They ruined a perfect piece of salmon. The Shrimp in the Shrimp cocktail were not as fresh as they should have been. The Flan was very good for dessert. Love that they have 2 drinks for the price of 1 during Happy Hour!!
If you are looking for upscale seafood with an ample wine selection, this is not the restaurant for you. It's very casual and there are just two chardonnays to choose from--neither of which are worth drinking. The menu is uninspired. There is also an unpleasant smell throughout the dining area from tables that have been wiped with a dirty rag.
At our arrival, we have been placed at a very nice table by one waitress then another staff member kicked us out claiming the table was reserved. The restaurant was half empty so we didn't understand this very strange non customer friendly move. The food was simply not good. My wife had a tuna burger than was seared on the outside but still half frozen inside and very mushy. She only ate a couple of bites and still got sick at night. Our friends complained about their food being too spicy and my fish was just unremarkable. I also had the worse Gin and tonic of my life. How can you mess up that???
I love Tarpon Bend - almost....
This was my 5th time here and that should tell you something given the plethora of eateries in Coral Gables!
Tarpon Bend is a pleasure on two grounds 1) its independent 2) it's great.
The menu is varied but small enough that you know they can do everything well and the cooking is top notch.
The shrimp starter are a revelation and anything that incorporates trout or Paiche is sure to please.
However.... it is not for everyone, my last visit was with my parents and the noise level made conversation either impossible or a shouting match, likewise the service is mixed, certainly not bad, but no where near the standard of the cookery
We really enjoy dining at this restaurant. There were two situations which I need to address. First I always make a reservation and I did so on OpenTable about two days before and I called to request a booth towards the back near the kitchen, the hostess was very nice and noted it, when we got there Sat nite there was a very nice young man at the front desk and he proceeded to sit us at a booth near the music, which we enjoy but was too close to even talk. This is why I requested the booth in the back, he said he would go find out if he could seat us somewhere else and told us to sit where he had taken us, this was not the way to handle the situation since it took awhile. This could have been avoided by looking at the reservation and whatever request had been made ahead of time. The other issue was our friends ordered a seafood special which was good but when they brought it out the person who served it said to them be careful because it will go all over, well aside from the heat and smoke from it the sauce was all over my friends white slacks. This should really be done at the kitchen not at the table which actually ruined someone's clothes. I am not a person who ever writes a bad review but I think the two issues need to be addressed. We really enjoy the restaurant and the food, everyone is always very nice.
I've never been there for dinner only happy hour ....but I think the dinner entrees are very over priced ....the short rib I ate was vey dry....on the flip side, the live band was great my blackberry mojito was awesome, and our appetizers were very delicious...(fire shrimp & camalari 👌
'Raw Bar' is in the name, but the only raw seafood that they had was oysters from places (TX and NH) that we'd never normally get them from. We did try them this time, and I wished I had not, they tasted like mud. And add to that the shucking was horrendous, most of them had been butchered so badly the had broken into multiple parts. The live band was turn up way too loud, and it sounded like the lead singer was almost screaming into the mike. Very slow service was the 3 strike. Never again, what a shame, the place had decent reviews as the 2nd best seafood joint in Coral Gables. How far is the ocean from there?
Nothing bad to say, overall experience was great , thought the shooters could of have a whole oyster rather then a very small piece ,aa little to small.
I am personally in the hospitality business so I would say a great connoisseur of food and service .
