Tar & Roses Ratings and Reviews
I love Tar & Roses. I've been coming here since they opened and never had anything less than a superb experience. All the food is fantastic but the snapper for two is exceptional, as well as the roasted carrots and trumpet mushrooms. Great wine list, delicious desserts. There's a reason you can't get a reservation here within the next two weeks. This place works hard to live up to the hype and i think it's the best restaurant in Santa Monica. Always look forward to my next visit!
If I could give this place 10 stars I would. Every time we visit the food and service blows us away. We had a belated Valentines dinner last night. We didn't capture every course because we were enjoying it too much. The food was absolutely excellent and the service was beyond expectation. Everyone is so attentive yet let's you enjoy your experience. THANK YOU Johnnie, Carly, the kitchen, and back waiters for such a memorable experience. Words don't do it justice.
We had the yellowtail crudo, octopus skewers, duck, brussels sprouts, mushrooms and skirt steak. EVERYTHING was so delicious! And thanks to Carly's vast knowledge of the wine selection and truly caring that we had the best experience, she paired wines with each course perfectly. She is the best!! We really love everything about this place.
The food was phenomenal. Its quite a small space. Youre less than a foot away from the person seated next to you. So your neighbors conversation and personal grooming habits are pretty apparent. Wether you want to experience them or not. The bathroom is about 3 feet away from tables and the line where the runner organizes the coursed food. Nevertheless the space is very attractive. The service is prompt and professional and the food is delicious. Just go.
My partner and I have been to tar and roses twice. 2 of the best meals I have ever had, meals that linger with your heart and soul. Meals we talk about for months after. By chance we had the same waitress as months before, she not only remembered us but what we ate. I regrettably don't know her name but both times she exquisitely coursed our meal. This is a beautiful dining experience with beautiful attention to detail and incredible progression of food. Thank you to our waitress and all of tar and roses.
I had heard and read so many great things about the food and let me tell you this place lived up to the hype- AMAZING!!! The flavor combinations, quality of ingredients, and level of service is above and beyond all expectations. We shared several small plates - the yellowtail crudo, oxtail dumplings, chicken liver mousse, bone marrow, and gnocchi - they were all wonderful. We finished it off with a beautiful cheese plate which was the cherry on top to a great meal.
If you're a true foodie and choose flavor over fluff, GO HERE!!!
Thank you for a wonderful dining experience!
A wonderful evening of creative dining as part of a birthday celebration. Very excellent and creative food options. We are ready to go back and continue thru the menu. Our serve was patient and helpful and sensitive to the fact that we were headed to a concert following dinner. It was a most pleasant experience that we will repeat.
Consistently excellent. I've been coming here since it opened in 2012 and have never had a bad meal. I always worry when I recommend Tar & Roses that I'm overselling it and that folks might be disappointed after all the accolades. Our friends said every bite from the carbonara and unctuous oxtail dumplings to the show-stopping whole red snapper were hands-down, some of the best food they'd ever had. Of course, the service is always on point: The sommelier worried that the sparkling rose we'd ordered hadn't had time to chill properly (how bad could it have been, we ordered a second bottle). Even so, they comped our desserts because of the sub-par temperature?! So not necessary but a class move. I'll take it. If I had one complaint, it's that the bussing staff are slightly too attentive - felt like they were hovering a bit too closely, waiting for you to take that last bite so they could move in with a clean place setting. Slow your roll, guys. Other than that, impeccable...as always.
Tar & Roses is my all time favorite restaurant in LA. I appreciate any and all excuses to eat there. I'm not always the most adventurous with food, but at Tar & Roses I will try absolutely ANYTHING. I've never had one bad bite of food and find myself craving the Lemon Ricotta Gnocchi frequently. This place is a MUST.
The oxtail dumplings are all the rave reviews make them out to be. One of the best dishes I've ever eaten. The seafood curry was excellent with the perfect heat for a winter night. Not as impressed with the roast chicken (moist, tender but flavorless). Staff is outstanding. Full house with limited elbow room. Between the crowd and the music, it is difficult to hold a conversation. Will definitely be back!
The food at Tar & Roses is amazing. I dine out regularly and I cannot recall the last time I've had a meal that I wanted to take my time with from the started to the dessert. We ordered from the DineLa menu and every item we ordered on the menu made me want to come back as soon as possible. The oxtail dumplings are a must have. (if you eat red meat) Mouthwatering!
Went for restaurant week after I’ve been wanting to go for some time and it did not disappoint! The food was fabulous- the oxtail dumplings were rich and delicious, the fish pot was divine, and I’ll be dreaming of the glorious honeycomb ice cream OMG. I love a restaurant with good ambiance and this wasn’t what I had hoped for or expected. It could have been much nicer given how awesome the menu is but I got over it. Would definitely return.
This place, oddly, we don't go to as often as we should considering how much we love it. We were 30 minutes late to our reservation (babysitter) and they were still able to seat us with out any fuss or wait. The staff was great and the food is always fantastic, I also enjoy the wine selection. This is one of those restaurants where you're always looking around at what other people ordered and think "I want to try that next time."
If you haven't, you should.
The dine LA Menu offered a good set of options to try their food. Appetizer to get: oxtail dumplin *sparly eyes emoji. The hanger steak, was cooked perfectly and the potatoes were heavenly. The seafood bowl was a little underwhelming. I don't know why nice restaurants are so adverse to a good ole corn on the cob to make the dish less fishy and more dynamic (mussels, oyster, shrimp and scallops (da bomb tbh), in a fishy curry broth).
However, the main drawback is that the seating arrangement is so tight and narrow, there's no real intimacy to the food. Often you're bumping elbows with the folks next to you, trying to speak over them to be heard by the people you're with. During peak hours, with the noise, its feels more like bar with a nice Menu than an actual restaurant. The cocktail bar I was at just before was quieter.
The food is good, but I'd try to go when its less busy.
