Tar & Roses
With our heart beating in Southern California, we want to create a welcoming ambiance for all to come and celebrate food. Jonathan Gold of the Los Angeles Times, claimed that Tar & Roses "...may also mark the first time in our nation's history when cauliflower became more delicious than prime steak," and we love to push the limits when it comes to traditional ideas of food. With our rotating selection of local craft beer and our ever-changing menu, there is always something new and exciting to try.
When you step into Tar & Roses, you'll feel like you are coming home. We invite you to come share a meal with us.

Wow! A wonderful dining experience! We have dined at Michelin-stared restaurants in France and The Netherlands and at some of the best restaurants in SF, but Tar and Roses counts among the very best places we have ever eaten. Creative dishes and truly great wine pairings make it so special. This last dinner was our third dinner there and we will be back.
We made a reservation here for my boyfriends birthday. The experience was excellent from beginning to end. The host staff was warm and accommodating. Our server was knowledgeable and gave great recommendations. And the food— holy moly! So delicious! May I recommend the duck with a side of mushrooms? Deeelish!
My best friend and I went for the most lovely experience I have had in a LONG time. First off the service was AMAZING!!! From the moment we walked in the door we were welcomed and seated and introduced to our servers. The service was professional and relaxed with a touch of humor. The food was incredible - we decided on numerous small bites to sample different things. Each dish that was brought out was layered with flavor with just the right complexity. We WILL most definitely be back. Thank you Tar and Roses for the most memorable evening.
We enjoyed everything we ordered. The snapper was our favorite and presented in a very clever way. I can hardly wait to visit Santa Monica again just to eat here.
Excellent food and service. Clean bathrooms. Wish the music volume was lower - too hard to converse.
My boyfriend and I dined here for the first time, and it completely exceeded our expectations. All dishes were prepared tastefully and the flavor was incredible. Favorites were the oxtail dumplings and the Gnocci, but all dishes were amazing right down to the desserts. Service was exemplary as well. Would come back. Highly recommend.
The food was amazing! The service and the staff were so welcoming and friendly. My one and only gripe would be the over size of restaurant. As a tall person I felt a bit confined and the table legs did not allow for much more leg room.
Birthday dinner. Everything was great!
Romantic atmosphere with lighted candles shining the dim background.
Ordered the BONE MARROW with sourdough and red onion to complement it - would've received a solid 9, if not for the sparse filling (8/10). The FRIED SNAPPER was sufficient for two - the crispy outer with soft inner meat was delicious (9/10). Ended the night with STRAWBERRY RICOTTA CROSTATA, which was a bit disappointing given the hype that surrounds it - the strawberry was sour (7/10).
The service was excellent, though!
I would give this a hgher rating but it was toooooo noisy & dimly lit
I think this restaurant is excellent. The service is almost too good and not much time before getting the first small plate and the drinks. Our waiter was amazing with his help on ordering. I think the only thing is the expense but overall very glad we went.
This was a spur of the moment find that was an amazing experience! All the dishes are meant to share. All the flavors were delicious and complex. All was very great !
We really enjoyed our dinner at T&R. We shared a Chicken Liver Pate to start, followed by a Endive Salad. For main course we had a Hanger Steak. Got to know Chris the manager , and he treated us to a fabulous strawberry tart with a side of gelato. Cozy atmosphere with excellent service. A bottle of the Prisoner to wash everything down. If we are back in Santa Monica will definitely come back.
We were seated immediately and drinks came out quickly. The waitress made good food selections and we had the fish, which was excellent! We will be back.
My favorite go to restaurant. Food is always on point!
Great food, wine and service!
Variety of dishes to share. All were delicious, especially the carrots, mushrooms and oxtail dumplings.
The food was amazing I can’t wait to go back.
Best meal I’ve ever had, start to finish.
Great food and wonderful service!
Seriously can not go wrong with eating here. What an absolute experience it was! My boyfriend and I went out of our comfort zone to try both the pigs tails and oxtail dumplings- so worth it! We then ended our meal with 3 different cheeses based off the recommendations of our waiter and he was spot on. If you’re looking for a unique experience in Santa Monica definitely check this place out!
An amazing dining experience. This was our fourth trip to the restaurant and every time we are in awe with the quality of food and service we receive! Highly recommend!!
Good menu excellent choices. Imaginative cooking. Good staff
Ingredients were clever and sophisticated without losing authenticity
No slavish or faddish offerings
A good honest satisfying dining experience
The food was amazing!!! Great service and fun little date spot.
The menu is well conceived and sounds good, but the kitchen just does not execute. The carpaccio was bright and acidic, but needed another oily element to make it more interesting. My duck was way overcooked, and the duck flavor was overwhelmed by the tangy sauce. The bruschetta was good, but the bread too thick and not quite charred enough, and the cherry tomato topping was too salty and needed more basil. The restaurant is pretty, and the service was great, but the food is not good enough for me to go back.
After two previous failed attempts to get to Tar & Roses we finally had dinner there to celebrate a family birthday. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience from start to finish. Highlights were Venison Loin, Oxtail Dumplings and Wood Roasted Carrots but everything we ate was excellent. Service was perfect with our knowledgable server providing just the right amount of attention. Hopefully the first of many visits.
Beat experience with the fried red snapper as it was easy to eat and the strawberry ricotta dessert was awesome too. Everyone should experience these two menu items at least once if not more if you live in the area.
We loved our first time at Tar and Roses. Food was delicious and the server attentive.
The crispy fried snapper is a must! Our server was knowledgeable with the entire menu and gave great wine recommendations. I would go back with more people so we can try more items on the menu.
Dinner on New Year’s Eve. Everyone was so friendly, festive and knowledgeable. You must have the English Peas and the Sunchoke soup, if it’s available. Amazing wine selection too. I can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough!
Brilliant food & service, great atmosphere. Was an excellent dinner and we will definitely be back.
Outstanding food and service!
Tar & Roses was a fantastic meal, loved by everyone in our party. We had the brussel sprouts, crab cakes, cauliflower, spaghetti carbonara, hanger steak, duck, strawberry crostata, and sticky toffee pudding. Carly, our server, did an amazing job of pairing the dishes so we had a lovely range of flavors. If we lived here, we would absolutely return, but we will recommend to friends and family.
Awesome, really wish we would have tried this place sooner, the food was unbelievable. The service was great. We will be back for sure.
I never got my requested message. Not very pleased
as always tar & roses was excellent.
food is fantastic, service is exemplary and ambiance
is always magical.
we highly recommend it.
This is the 4th time I have dined at Tar & Roses. We arrived early on a night where they were totally booked, yet they were able to get us to our table immediately. We always order the oxtail dumplings to start, and they are consistently delicious. The Shashito Peppers had a great aoli for dipping and the portion is enough for 4 people. We tried a variety of dishes to share, including the Woodroasted Sunchokes which had a great lemon sauce that you almost couldn't see but was a nice surprise of flavor. I can't go to Tar & Roses and not have the pasta carbonara. This is beautiful dish and I hate having to share it. The sauce is creamy and rich, the bacon perfectly cooked and I love the addition of the egg right before serving which allows the diner to incorporate the egg into the pasta. The duck was cooked perfectly. Our waitress was very helpful with the wine selection (there are a lot to choose from) and was not in your face, but always available when you needed something. The wait staff were on top of everything and very accommodating. I always ask to sit on the back patio and it is quiet in that area. I suspect if we ate in the main dining room it would be too noisy for our tastes, but they have also been able to accommodate our request for the patio.
My favorite restaurant in Santa Monica, possibly even all of LA. Everything here is incredible!
The disdain for vegan eaters fairly dripped off the server and the menu. My dinner companion laughed at how disdainful the server was when I asked about vegan options. Unless you like to eat side dishes of peas or cauliflower Tar and Roses is one of the worst restaurants in LA to go as a vegan.
I don’t expect restaurants to cater to a vegan lifestyle but one simple main menu choice would be easy. Tar and Roses seems to make a concerted effort to not be vegan friendly.
To each their own but it is LA and 2019. The 1980s seem to be calling for Tar and Roses.
What a great place. The food was delicious and we’ve enjoyed every minute
