3rd or 4th visit.
Food’s lost its newness. Less interesting overall.
Sommelier on his game.
Had serious trouble with the first dish. Set a bad tone for the rest of meal. Opportunity missed to make good.

Server was really pushy and also suggested that we were ordering too much...just don’t do that. I know how much I can eat, I know the size of your plates because I have dined here a few dozen times and I know I don’t need someone telling me what I should and shouldn’t eat. I am a chef, I know what food pairs well with other foods...this aggravated me slightly...the server should encourage you to order more so the establishment can make more money! I know how restaurant business works. Just one of my pet peeve’s when it comes to proper etiquette while serving but know that the food is DELICIOUS!

Better chef - Food ( who can't cook carrots?), less cooking oils (like frieding fish), burnt regular toast - come on you can do better.

It was my first time in Santa Monica and my friend recommended this place to me because he knows I'm very particular and love tapas-style. When I first walked in - I was very happy to see the beautiful decor and the ambiance was great. My reservation was at 8:00PM and I was 10 minutes early but it wasn't a problem - I ordered a glass of wine while I waited. Once seated, I was having a hard time deciding what to order because there were so many delicious options and I wanted to try everything. I ended up ordering the following:
1. Bruschetta Charcuterie & Cheese 5 items for $29
2. Oxtail Dumplings for $12
3. Miso Glazed Bone Marrow for $16
4. Charred Brussels Sprouts for $12
5. Colorado Lam Sirloin for $32

ALL were delicious and highly recommended. I was with one other friend and this was MORE than enough. We were actually full after the Bone Marrow (3rd plate).

NEED TO GO BACK!

The food was absolutely delicious! The meat was of high quality, cooked rare, and tasted divine! The carrots were cooked in such a way that they were crispy black on the outside, yet still super soft and amazingly tasty! The banana-pecan ice cream was one of the richest ice creams we’d ever tasted! The signature strawberry crostata is to die for, would highly recommend! The ambiance was very nice, the lights were low with candles, and our waiter helped us decide our meals based on his expert taste, I was very impressed! Would definitely return :)

Thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Service was friendly, attentive but unobtrusive and the food was exceptional. This will definitely become a go to spot for any occasion. Really great place. Thank you to the entire staff for the great time.

We loved our dinner and experience. We followed the recommendations of our server, with several small dishes, and a larger dish split between two of us. The food was exceptional. I brought wine and paid the corkage, but had I seen the wine list prior to arriving, I wouldn't have bothered. It's a great list with good prices. We'll be back next time we visit Santa Monica!

We love Tar & Roses. Always a special night. Didn't love the hanger steak this last time, however. We found it to be tough/chewy. But the chicken liver and the strawberry dessert more than made up for it. And the service was superb as always.

Our favorite restaurant in Los Angeles!! You've got to get the English peas with mint. Amazing. You'll never eat edamame again. Johnnie Jenkins and his staff are top shelf. Thank you Nick, our waiter, for being so incredible. Service matters and you excel!

Met a business associate who was coming in from out of town. I wanted a place that was guaranteed to have good food and this restaurant did not disappoint. Everything I ate was delicious. But my choices were very limited as a non-dairy eating vegetarian. Almost nothing on the menu. My colleague had many more choices and enjoyed her food, but she thought everything was too salty. I would say the atmosphere was a little cramped and noisy. But we had an excellent, very enthusiastic wait person and she gave us great recommendations. Would definitely come again.

My friend and I had an OUTSTANDING dining experience at Tar & Roses. We asked the executive chef to make recommendations for us and he chose dishes that wow'ed and surprised us. The chicken liver mousse is a taste sensation -- not liver-y. It's delicate and luscious and beautifully paired with berries and honeycomb. Delicious. I don't know how they elevated the carbonara. The best we'd ever had. The crab cake rests on a great sauce that combines sweet with heat. The shellfish pot was tasty. Ask for extra bread for dipping. :-) Tar & Roses does vegetables well. The wood-roasted english peas with a bit of char and zingy mint and sea salt were addictive. The broccolini? We couldn't get enough of it. Don't miss out on the strawberry ricotta crostata for dessert. Actually, don't miss out on Tar & Roses. Great dining experience. And they also do very well with wine recommendations. :-)

Always a great meal when we are in LA. We had the small plates of Bone Marrow, Squid Ink Pasta, Yellow Tail - then share the whole fish and ribeye. With a few vegetable sides, that was plenty for 5 people. Tar and Roses does an amazing job with all the different flavors - all so well done!!!

Let the restaurant know ahead of time it was a special occasion, our 20th Anniversary. Well, for all that trouble, we were seated in the very back...in a corner, it was quite tight. Oh, and there was a large group next to us so yeah...not very romantic. It's a pretty loud place in general, which is great, but not for a date. The menu, sort of like the restaurant, feels a little claustrophobic. The food that we did try was very tasty. It took a while to get it...the service was pretty bad. Just super slow. We were not a priority for this gal at all. It wouldn't have been so bad if maybe we weren't stuck in a corner next to the party of 12. Seriously, we could not hear ourselves across our own table. We sat, stared, laughed...whatever, glad to have checked it out. I don't get the hype.

Loved everything about this restaurant! Fresh everything, perfect for sharing, cool space and excellent service.
Start with a Charcuterie Board!!! Seriously, if you don't you'll be super disappointed when you see all that deliciousness being delivered to other tables. Everything on the menu is good but the deep fried Snapper for two was AMAZING and surprisingly easy to eat and a LOT of food.
Menu changes based on seasonal availability but we also enjoyed the charred beets with feta, the baby gems salad, gnocchi and roasted chicken on a big bread salad.
It's a loud but not head-banding loud. Casual, easy valet parking and great service.

Tar & Roses is a must stop location whenever I am in Santa Monica. Even though I live in Seattle, I always stop in to see what's new on their menu. Can't rave about the Bone Marrow enough (it's sooo good) and the oxtail dumplings are just decadent! The service is always very good and I highly recommend reservations as I have never been there without seeing would-be diners disappointed that there were no tables available.
