Tar & Roses
With our heart beating in Southern California, we want to create a welcoming ambiance for all to come and celebrate food. Jonathan Gold of the Los Angeles Times, claimed that Tar & Roses "...may also mark the first time in our nation's history when cauliflower became more delicious than prime steak," and we love to push the limits when it comes to traditional ideas of food. With our rotating selection of local craft beer and our ever-changing menu, there is always something new and exciting to try.
When you step into Tar & Roses, you'll feel like you are coming home. We invite you to come share a meal with us.

Absolutely excellent, great service with a really informative waiter. The food was outstanding with great different tastes and takes on traditional dishes..... we loved it
Incredible food, great wine and the highlight was our amazing server
Visited Tar & Roses for a birthday dinner. Our booking was at 7.30pm however we weren't seated till 8.00pm and the waiting area is narrow you feel like you have been put in the naughty corner.
The waitress recommended the steak which was tough, chewy and tasteless. The ambience of the place was nice and the dessert was amazing . I wouldn't rush to go back and would probably rate it a 4 out of 10 as prices are quite steep as well.
We were seated about 15 minutes late for our 9 PM reservation, but the hostess communicated with us while we waited and mentioned they would be bringing a complementary snack to our table when we were seated. Good communication and a small gesture like that goes a long way to making the customer happy. We started off with the oxtail dumplings and glazed ribs as appetizers and both were outstanding. The fried snapper for two with sweet & sour dipping sauce is a stand out and one of the best dishes I've had anywhere. The fish was quite large and plenty for two people to share and at $69.00 was a fair price.
We've been to Tar & Roses several times and the food and service never disappoint!
I was never big on sharing, but "small plates" doesn't get much better than Tar & Roses.
The food at Tar & Roses was outstanding - great flavors, well prepared, and nicely presented. The only caution I will give is that it is not inexpensive. That also extends to the wine list where a few bottles are less than $100, but most are over that. I will go back, but limited to special occasions.
The food at Tar & Roses is always delicious. Started with the English peas, Lemon Ricotta Gnocchi, and the Miso Glazed Eggplant - all fantastic. Then on to the Chanterelle Mushroom Toast and the Fried Cauliflower and the Branzino - loved them all. Finished with an amazing cheese plate. Wonderful meal and the service was perfect. It's a little on the loud side, but hard to find a restaurant that isn't.
Delicious food and great service! Seated in the rear patio area. Lovely! Got a bit noisy when it filled up with customers, but it was all in all a fantastic experience.
I always enjoy this place. The food is really good and inventive, the service is wonderful. It can be a little noisy but this is as close to perfect as anyone needs.
Fabulous food and service. Go early for quiet meal. Gets noisy when full
Amazing food and very, very friendly staff. We will be back!
Food was fantastic, we had the fish for two and it’s one of the best ever ,
Everything we ordered were delicious!! Definitely coming here again!
Great food and service. Just a tiny bit loud but would go back in a second!
The wine selection, cheese plate, venison and cauliflower were the standouts to me! Great meal and will definitely be back!
Good service, decent food, stupidly noisy though I choose the restaurant looking for a buzzy place as suggested. In fact it’s not buzzy it just has such loud music that we could hear the waitress or even talk.
I love a lively vibe but this was not ideal at all. Plus the view is just if the main road, nothing to look at at all if you are holiday and don’t want to watch traffic n shops.
Every time I’ve been the food and the service have been outstanding. One of my favorite restaurants in Santa Monica. The snapper for 2 is simply amazing.
Always a grate place to have dinner!
Delicious every time!!!!!
There is everything to like about this place. Our table of 4 tried at least 6 or 7 separate dishes and they were all delicious. The teamwork among the servers was top notch. Utensils, plates, water, etc., were all placed at exactly the right time. The waitress made great recommendations regarding the delivery order of the various plates that we ordered. We sat in the back outdoor area and the ambience was quite nice. Would definitely go again.....a lot!
Excellent food - loved the snapper and the Strawberry Ricotta was maybe the best dessert I've ever had.
Waiters were good but hurried. It was a Saturday night. Noise level was high. I will definitely return.
We had a wonderful eve out with friends and the food was excellent!!!
We will definitely return.
One of the best restaurants in Los Angeles.
Amazing creative food! Great to order a few small plates and veggies to share with the table or opt for an entree. Girls weekend visit in Santa Monica - and our favorite dining experience!
My palate was jumping with glee from the finely honed, well presented, small plates from Tar & Roses. An amazing culinary experience.
Thank you for a wonderful evening.
Great people, great vibe, delicious dishes. The outdoor tables are really nice.
Great food. Can't beat it for the food variety and quality. Very noisy that night. Hard to have a conversation. ( it may have been the large group near us) I have never had the noise problem there before
This meal was the highlight of a months trip( together with a restaurant in San Francisco!)
I could not fault a thing. The oxtail dumplings were divine, the bone marrow was delicious and our main course of venison was superb.
Our waiter, Brad, was excellent. His knowledge and suggestions were first rate.
We loved the ambiance, chilled and with great lighting. If you get the chance GO!
Loved our meal at Tar & Roses. The food exceeded expectations. We ordered five or six small plates and had a hard time deciding which was our favorite - each was fantastic.
The waitstaff was friendly and helpful, with good suggestions and great attentiveness.
The space was pleasant, noise level fine, and a casual-yet-not-too-casual ambiance.
Would definitely go again. Really glad we checked it out!
Awesome food. Four of us ate family style. My two favorites for the chicken liver mousse and the strawberry dessert.
Really really enjoyed the crab cake and dumplings, as well as little gem salad. Fried cauliflower was just ok as well as the hanger steak. Shellfish pot was great! No liquor was disappointing and prices were definitely rather high.
Great Place and service
Food was excellent. Service was very good as well. Interesting and unique options.
Amazing dining experience. Everything was delicious
One of our favorite places. The food is amazing and the service is wonderful. The noise level is very high, acoustics in the space must be tough to deal with, but if you're ready to speak up, this place is great!
Server was excellent and helped us plan the order of delivery with an eclectic menu order. Loved the food and atmosphere. Thank you all.
Gourmet dining in Santa Monica in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. Delicious food and fabulous service.
Excellent food and ambiance. Our server was wonderful. Will be back.
Every time we come to Tar and Roses it is always consistently delicious with an energetic atmosphere.
