Tar & Roses
With our heart beating in Southern California, we want to create a welcoming ambiance for all to come and celebrate food. Jonathan Gold of the Los Angeles Times, claimed that Tar & Roses "...may also mark the first time in our nation's history when cauliflower became more delicious than prime steak," and we love to push the limits when it comes to traditional ideas of food. With our rotating selection of local craft beer and our ever-changing menu, there is always something new and exciting to try.
When you step into Tar & Roses, you'll feel like you are coming home. We invite you to come share a meal with us.
What Insiders Are Saying
Tar and Roses exudes a classy calmness not often seen in this part of town.
Great food. Great place. We had a great evning. Every dish was delicious
Beautiful place with an amazing food! I will return for sure next time I am in the city. The tastes are refined and sofisticated. 5 stars!
Truly extraordinary meal. Top notch service. The fried snapper was one of a kind. Tasty and easy to eat. The rub on the steak was delicious. Baby carrots were the best I’ve ever had. Coming back soon!
It was good, but I wouldn’t go back. Nothing stood out as an amazing or memorable dish. I had three courses and didn’t bother with dessert. I think most off these reviews are based off referred hotel guests rather than experienced restauranteurs. If you’re looking for an authentic experience I wouldn’t go here.
Great atmosphere and the service was great! Where do I begin with the food. Delicious!
Everything was delicious! It's a must try :) I'll be back again soon.
Best service I’ve had in a long time. Great food! The crab cake was fresh, but average flavor and one texture, but the rest was outstanding!!!! The oxtail dumplings were insane and the best charcuterie I’ve had in a long long time! It’s pretty expensive, but I’d say worth it for the service.
We will definitely be back.
Great restaurant - wonderful food, friendly efficient service, cosy and comfortable room. Chef Andrew is a talent unafraid to experiment with new dishes. Highly recommended.
The kitchen puts out great food, with just the right amount of creativity and not losing freshness or authenticity. Too much food is precious these days. Tar & Roses just puts out great food. Go. Enjoy.
Excellent course recommendations from our server, the oxtail dumplings, lamb tartar and cauliflower were highlights
Jonah was our server and to say he's an excellent server is an understatement. He's just simply amazing at reading his guests and tending to their culinary needs. It is because of him and the incredible food that we have named Tar & Roses as our GO-TO restaurant!
Great recs from our bartender. Get the oxtail dumplings.
The food was outstanding. The staff helped us put together an amazing charcuterie board and pair a wine. The octopus was cooked perfectly. The tables were cozy with nice lighting. Great place for a date.
Friendly welcome, no much of a wait, manager got drinks order in, server arrived already knowing the drinks order had been taken. Took us thru menu.
Food out of kitchen was nicely paced.
Really enjoyable experience!
The food is so original
Light small plates are seeped in luscious flavors
Grilled little gems, gnocchi w peas and the fabulous shortribs
The chef-prepared entrees (we had veggies, gnocchi, and a shellfish pot) were absolutely fantastically amazing and flavorful - definitely worth a return. However, the waitress was snobby, the wine was overpriced, and the atmosphere was a little awkward. We had a 5:30pm reservation and there were plenty of available tables by the window, but we were sat at a tiny table in the dark. Sadly, these things will probably not make it worth another visit.
Always order the duck. Changes every time. Cooked perfect but missed the cornbread on the plate. The mustard greens were a little to bitter and the cherries were great but need more sauce. Such a beautiful night to sit in the back area with the roof open. Oh the liver pate for and appetizer was Devine. Wish the corkage was $25.00.
Our “go to” restaurant when we are in Santa Monica. Spectacular food (if you like bone marrow, you have to order it!). Very attentive service, and a place I highly recommend.
Tar And Roses continues to be our favorite "special" place in Santa Monica. The menu is amazing, service is always excellent and the ambiance is just right. They do have a back room with open ceiling that's a little quieter if that's important to you. Usually our server is Brad and he is excellent - thought your should know.
Great late night stop. Everything was delicious. Don't skip desert. The strawberry whatever thing is delicious!
I’m so happy that we chose Tar & Roses to have our 20year anniversary dinner! The steak was delish and the heated patio seating was the perfect atmoshere. I will be back to have the soft shell crab in May!
Perfect for date night or friends hang-out. Great food, great wine! Our server was super friendly and knowledgeable about food recommendation and wine suggestion. We had a great time! will definitely come back again!
It was great - except I always get the best carbonara in the world there and they don’t have it on the menu now😡
Lovely food, innovative, NY atmosphere. Service was not as attentive as we would have liked. Will recommend.
Amazing! Fried snapper is a must!!
Great food (we tried 5 small plates), excellent service, and reasonable pricing made this an all around winner. The tables are close but the place is fairly noisy so that creates some privacy.
Great food....very unique menu...nice ambience and great service.
Food and service was amazing. The selections are vast, and the servers are passionate and knowledgeable about the food and wine menus. Truly a great restaurant with an inspired chef and staff.
Pretty place. Great for a date. Focus on quality food. Charcuterie and cheese plate amazing
Excellent and knowledgeable server. Inventive food and tastes yet very approachable. All four of us were equally impressed.
Tar each was, in its own way, a masterpiece. Every dish is cooked to perfection and we left feeling as though we had stumbled into a restaurant with Michelin Star quality cuisine. I can not recommend this place enough — it is the best food I’ve ever had for the price.
Great food, fun atmosphere..
Front desk was super friendly and offered a seat at the patio when I got to the restaurant and mentioned the wonderful sunny weather. This turned out to be great because the waitress Carly in the patio was phenomenal. She was super friendly and super knowledgeable about the food and the restaurant. The food was great and Carly's professionalism elevated the food and the experience to another level. I had been to Herringbone, Cassia, and Rustic Canyon the same week and two hands down Tar & Roses just beat the rest with the great food and best service.
We had a disappointing esperience at Tar and Roses on Wednesday, March 27th. We made a reservation about a week in advance for a party of five. We were placed at a table right across from the main door to the kitchen and right across from where the servers pick up the food. It was terribly distracting and noisy. And we were all cold. It was extremely drafty. We had two bottles of wine and an appetizer plate and shared three small plates and two large, and we had gelato for dessert. The appetizer cheese and charcuterie platter was very unimpressive and amateurishly put together. There was really nothing outstanding or memorable about any of the dishes. Even the gelato was disappointing and actually had ice in it. We have been there twice before and both times had an enjoyable experience. Sadly, we will not go back again.
The service was excellent but the dishes were medicore. I was dissapointed on most of the dishes I ordered and felt unsatisifed.
We had a number of people with food allergies/restrictions and they made every effort to accommodate.
Celebrated my birthday and a successful marathon for my friends. Service from everyone was impeccable and friendly. The food was amazing - it looked great and tasted even better.
Incredible food that was fresh, innovative and incredible! Service was excellent.
Awesome as always! The food and wine are top notch. $80 per person (tax and tip included) for a bottle of wine and fully satisfied stomachs. Not bad for a nice meal out in Los Angeles!!
My favorite restaurant of all times. I have never had a bad experience. The food, service, location is totally worth the money.
