What Insiders Are Saying
Tar and Roses exudes a classy calmness not often seen in this part of town.
Great place for special occasions, would recommend for more anybody that enjoy eating great quality food
Definitely a must eat at place! The food is fantastic, elegant, tasty and absolutely amazing. Server was knowledgeable about the food and provided excellent wine options.
Definitely one of the best restaurants in LA
The food was amazing and the wait staff was helpful in choosing dishes for our group.
Never a bad meal here
Much to much sauce and seasoning added to everything - in the end that's all I tasted.
Brad was our waiter and he was excellent! The food was incredible including a fish dish that had Omarosa at the next table inquiring about it.
It was very warm inside the restaurant and for some reason the air conditioning was not working. But overall one of the best dung experiences we have had in some time!
Excellent food and service
Worthy of all the praise. The soft shell crab and oxtail dumplings were delicious while the service exuded quiet confidence.
The food here was creative and delicious. We loved the sweet bread, sardines, curry sea food pot and cauliflower. How can cauliflower tast so good?
Fab fab fab - waitress so amazing and accommodating. Didn’t like our first table option and moved us immediately. Food was delicious particularly soft shell crab and rib eye.
Absolutely wonderful meal and attentive staff! Our glasses were never empty and our server orchestrated the perfect flavor combinations with our menu choices. They even gave us a complimentary scoop of banana pecan ice cream for our anniversary.
Great and yummy
This restaurant is my favorite restaurant in LA. Every dish I've tried here has been so delicious, we finished everything on every plate! I would highly recommend the oxtail dumplings and hanger steak. We sat in the outdoor area in the back this time and it's a beautiful space. This is definitely a must-eat every time I visit the city!
Food and service were great! My only recommendation is for the place to add blinds or curtains. On a very sunny day, if you get a table by the window the sun can become blinding. When we were there, there was a couple of parties that had to move or leave the place because the sun was too uncomfortable when sitting by the window.
Lots of creative choices on the menu and my wife and I selected 5 to share. Our waiter was really amazing . . . . she not only helped us with our final choices but did an amazing job staging to food into courses. A total professional who made our dinner first rate. Each dish was creative and prepared with care without being fussy. Our favorite was the grilled peaches with burrata. The gnocchi was amazingly light and tasty. The yellowtail crudo was light and refreshing . . definitely worth ordering. All in all a terrific dining experience with great food and great service without being pretentious.
We visited for our wedding anniversary. We were seated on the back, partially covered, patio, which was a beautiful spot to enjoy our time together. The oxtail dumplings are a must, the corn and mascarpone gnocchi was different but delicious, the asparagus and wood roasted chicken reminded us of a home-cooked meal, and for dessert we ate the strawberry ricotta crostata, which warranted its hype.
Phenomenal from start to finish. From the space to the service... But especially the food was amazing. Fantastic combination of flavors and creativity. Easily a top 5 dinner and the best I've had on Westside!
Excellent food. Great creativity on dish creation. Service was very good. Laid back but attentive. One of the best restaurants in the area.
Food was excellent. Portions were a bit small for our group of 5. This is a sharing menu and a bit expensive for the portion size. Service was excellent
Wonderful place to host my daughter's 30th birthday. The food was simply delicious!
Our first time back since the re-opening. It was even better than I had remembered. Always a favorite, the food was spectacular! Loved every bite and the service was wonderful. Can't wait to return.
You can’t go wrong here
Food tasted great. However, the whole family had the runs the next morning. Must be the tar tar. 😟
Very inventive menu, great atmosphere and wonderful service.
OK, so we started out with the Wood Roasted Peaches and Speck and the Oxtail Dumplings. The dumplings are raved about on every review I had read. I was underwhelmed. To me they were overly salty and over-cooked. I felt like I was eating Armour potted meat in a won-ton, so that was a disappointment. It is, though, one of their best selling items, so I either caught them on an off night or it’s one of those dishes that I just won’t like and others will. The peaches, on the other hand were fantastic! Smoky, subtle tarragon, just really nicely done.
Then came the Entre. We shared the Whole Fried Snapper for Two. Amazing in every way. A fabulous presentation (loads of pictures online) and absolutely delicious. There were other things on the menu that looked really interesting, but this was so good that I will be hard pressed not to order it again the next time we dine there. The strawberry ricotta crostata, also highly acclaimed, was magnificent. The wine recommendation was spot on, and the service was superb as well. Brad was our server. And Johnnie (the GM) got wind that we were not thrilled with the dumplings and they disappeared from our bill. That wasn’t necessary, but certainly was appreciated. They are serious about people being satisfied. We will be back when we are in Santa Monica. Highly recommended.
I would not recommend this restaurant. I was very disappointed with the service . The management requested that we move from the table to the bar as we were taking too much time. I had a client with me therefore I was courteous but embarrassed & upset. Never in the many high-end restaurants that I have entertained clients at have I ever had this happen . Shame on them . When we left the couple that was sitting beside us was still there. So maybe we were not meeting their dollar value average for the table. ?? Who to tell but then again this was unacceptable .
Our waitress was very attentive and knew how to pair the items on the menu. We were very impressed by every dish. Each offered a different flavor and texture. We would for sure return again!
Excellent across the board
This is our 2nd visit to Tar and Roses and like the first time, we really enjoyed the food. We also had a very attentive waiter named Brad who was very helpful and informative. When we chose the wine, I tasted it and it seemed bitter to me so he immediately replaced it with a nice Pinot Grigio which was perfect with the seafood. We also appreciated the complementary Chocolate hazelnut ice cream dessert which topped off our 26th Anniversary dinner quite nicely. It wouldn't be a place for us every night or even once a week because though the courses were ample and of good value, we have four in our family. I might mention that the very large goblets the wine came in were only about 1/4 full and for the price it seemed a little sparse. All in all, I would recommend this wonderful restaurant to my friends. I really thought it was nice that the owner/manager? came to visit us and wanted to make sure everything was to our satisfaction.
Better then ever. Great food and wonderful service. Ate in the back room and the ceiling was open and the weather was perfect. The duck with cherry chutney was delicious along with the cornbread. Don’t wait for a special occasion. Treat yourself.
We ordered the roasted goat special a week in advance. The dish was really delicious, having soaked in Moroccan spices for 18 hours and then cooked slowly (sous vide) and finished by roasting. The grilled lettuce salad was amazing as a starter (with bacon and blue-cheese).
Highly recommend the goat dinner. Book at least a week in advance to enjoy a carefully prepared delicious meal.
A classic! Tar and Roses never gets old. Tried and true cuisine with attentive service. The staff are warm and welcoming, every course was tasty and well prepared. Save room for the strawberry tart. The best I’ve ever had. Restaurants come and go. Long my this one live!
Our family had the most delicious meal at Tat & Roses. Every single dish had a distinct and pleasing flavor.
The service was spectacular and if ever in the area would run back!
Excellent food & wonderful people every time
Everything was so delicious. Oxtail dumplings and gnocchi were great starters. Had the whole snapper and duck as entrees- so delicious. And the sweet potatoes- OK, again, delicious. My guests were so delighted we introduced them to this "delicious" restaurant. Crostada- also wonderful.
Most of what we were impressed by was the food and the service. Outstanding!
Food, service and atmosphere were amazing. First time here but I will be back soon. There are so many dishes I want to try.
Everything was great and creative, and beautifully plated.
Carlee, the manager was so sweet. We had to wait for our table and she kept in contact with us and went above and beyond. The food was also great as always
Mariel provided above and beyond exceptional service. She thoughtfully coursed our and paced our meal so that my husband, who had to catch a flight, was able to enjoy all the courses. The food was great, as always, but Mariel is awesome and super knowledgeable about the whole menu, as well as the wine selection. We had previously been here and enjoyed, but this time around, our family had one of the best dining experiences on the Westside.
