Tar & Roses
Friday & Saturday 5:30pm-10:30pm
What Insiders Are Saying
Tar and Roses exudes a classy calmness not often seen in this part of town.
We ordered the roasted goat special a week in advance. The dish was really delicious, having soaked in Moroccan spices for 18 hours and then cooked slowly (sous vide) and finished by roasting. The grilled lettuce salad was amazing as a starter (with bacon and blue-cheese).
Highly recommend the goat dinner. Book at least a week in advance to enjoy a carefully prepared delicious meal.
A classic! Tar and Roses never gets old. Tried and true cuisine with attentive service. The staff are warm and welcoming, every course was tasty and well prepared. Save room for the strawberry tart. The best I’ve ever had. Restaurants come and go. Long my this one live!
Our family had the most delicious meal at Tat & Roses. Every single dish had a distinct and pleasing flavor.
The service was spectacular and if ever in the area would run back!
Excellent food & wonderful people every time
Everything was so delicious. Oxtail dumplings and gnocchi were great starters. Had the whole snapper and duck as entrees- so delicious. And the sweet potatoes- OK, again, delicious. My guests were so delighted we introduced them to this "delicious" restaurant. Crostada- also wonderful.
Most of what we were impressed by was the food and the service. Outstanding!
Food, service and atmosphere were amazing. First time here but I will be back soon. There are so many dishes I want to try.
Everything was great and creative, and beautifully plated.
Carlee, the manager was so sweet. We had to wait for our table and she kept in contact with us and went above and beyond. The food was also great as always
Mariel provided above and beyond exceptional service. She thoughtfully coursed our and paced our meal so that my husband, who had to catch a flight, was able to enjoy all the courses. The food was great, as always, but Mariel is awesome and super knowledgeable about the whole menu, as well as the wine selection. We had previously been here and enjoyed, but this time around, our family had one of the best dining experiences on the Westside.
This is our favorite restaurant when visiting Santa Monica. The chef does an amazing job of creating flavorful and unique meals.
Buen ambiente y comida, NO RECOMENDABLE para ir con chicos
A new favorite!
Had a great time at Tar & Roses! They had great service and made a point to greet us with rosé when our reservation had been pushed back by a few minutes. Amazing selection for the wine and beer list. The food was authentic and each dish was the perfect size for sharing! Our favorites were the charcuterie board and the oxtail dumplings
We were given a gift card and checked this wonderful place out. Loved it! Will be back for sure!
I had a great experience here. Everything was spot on - this was a great dining experience. Don't miss the Oxtail Dumplings. We also had the gnocchi, chicken liver pate, lamb tartare, and bone marrow - all excellent as well. Great flavor profiles, thoughtful plates and great presentation as well. We only did the top half of the menu, but other customers were enjoying their dinners as well. Will definitely be back.
We love tar and roses. Everything about it from the food to the friendly staff.
Everything was delicious and unique. We can’t wait to go back.
Previous to our visit we always read other reviews and recommendations. We asked our waiter for recommendations and everything he offered we didn’t order. If I can make recommendations the pig tail, oxtail dumplings, crudo are a MUST!
Just excellent from start to finish - loved it !!!!
Our first time here...will not be our last. From the moment we walked in the door until we departed (a couple of hours later), I was impressed with the quality of service. Smiles everywhere, efficient and enthusiastic service, and then there is the food. Wonderful food. We had appetizers and small plates and shared a dessert, and there wasn't anything I wouldn't order again in spite of experiencing food envy as I saw other dishes served at nearby tables. We had the chicken liver mousse (outstanding), the bone marrow (very very rich...but tasty), the dumplings, trumpet mushrooms, and the roasted baby carrots. A decadent combination of flavors and textures topped off with the grand finale -- the strawberry crostata -- which was every bit as luscious as the reviews had said.
On vacation here from Canada (MOntreal and Whistler) and this place was highly recommended by a local. We absolutely loved the food and whole vibe. Cut above California
Perfect service! Perfect food! Delightful
Excellent service and food! Definitely save room for dessert - the strawberry crostini is delicious! We were celebrating an anniversary and every staff member, even the receptionist as we left the restaurant, wished us a happy anniversary!!
Brad our server was fantastic.
Shellfish and Lamb Sirloin were fresh, tender & juicy. Excellent!!
Best restaurant in Santa Monica; cozy, laid back athmosphere, great service
All the dishes are excellent and I highly recommend Tar and Roses restaurant. One complaint would be that they were not on top of the water and the ice. The deep fried snapper fish is over the top. In addition I also have the seafood combo and I really like the broth. The bottom line is it’s all good.
Good very unusual.fresh.creatively spiced.
Good service. Helpful,patient,knowledgeable
Will be back when I am in area
I cannot wait to go back. The only disappointment were the chicken oysters. The whole fried snapper was outstanding. Our server was genuine and knew his stuff.
Always a delicious meal and impeccable service! By far my favorite restaurant in town!
3rd or 4th visit.
Food’s lost its newness. Less interesting overall.
Sommelier on his game.
Had serious trouble with the first dish. Set a bad tone for the rest of meal. Opportunity missed to make good.
Very good food. One of the best branzinos I have had in LA.
love it, the waiter was also awesome. great beer and appetizer options. we did not get to the main courses because we tried a lot of appetizers. this is one awesome spot.
Had an amazing server who made the whole night an experience to remember. We asked her to let us relax and trust her choices for the menu that night and it was the best experience!! So relaxing and so very delicious! We had so much fun!!
Server was really pushy and also suggested that we were ordering too much...just don’t do that. I know how much I can eat, I know the size of your plates because I have dined here a few dozen times and I know I don’t need someone telling me what I should and shouldn’t eat. I am a chef, I know what food pairs well with other foods...this aggravated me slightly...the server should encourage you to order more so the establishment can make more money! I know how restaurant business works. Just one of my pet peeve’s when it comes to proper etiquette while serving but know that the food is DELICIOUS!
Better chef - Food ( who can't cook carrots?), less cooking oils (like frieding fish), burnt regular toast - come on you can do better.
Cant wait to try everything again
It was my first time in Santa Monica and my friend recommended this place to me because he knows I'm very particular and love tapas-style. When I first walked in - I was very happy to see the beautiful decor and the ambiance was great. My reservation was at 8:00PM and I was 10 minutes early but it wasn't a problem - I ordered a glass of wine while I waited. Once seated, I was having a hard time deciding what to order because there were so many delicious options and I wanted to try everything. I ended up ordering the following:
1. Bruschetta Charcuterie & Cheese 5 items for $29
2. Oxtail Dumplings for $12
3. Miso Glazed Bone Marrow for $16
4. Charred Brussels Sprouts for $12
5. Colorado Lam Sirloin for $32
ALL were delicious and highly recommended. I was with one other friend and this was MORE than enough. We were actually full after the Bone Marrow (3rd plate).
NEED TO GO BACK!
The food was absolutely delicious! The meat was of high quality, cooked rare, and tasted divine! The carrots were cooked in such a way that they were crispy black on the outside, yet still super soft and amazingly tasty! The banana-pecan ice cream was one of the richest ice creams we’d ever tasted! The signature strawberry crostata is to die for, would highly recommend! The ambiance was very nice, the lights were low with candles, and our waiter helped us decide our meals based on his expert taste, I was very impressed! Would definitely return :)
Wonderful small plates that we shared! Attentive service, patio is wonderfully more quiet, food original and tasty!
