Tar & Roses
Friday & Saturday 5:30pm-10:30pm
What Insiders Are Saying
Tar and Roses exudes a classy calmness not often seen in this part of town.
Carly the server was amazing. She made the dinner delightful!
The service was superb as was the atmosphere. The menu offerings were unique and the food was delightful.
Always the best. Anything you order on the board is great. 5 items for 4 people almost fills you. Best preparation of duck ever. Last time the duck had cherries and this time it had huckleberries. Can’t decide which is better. Venison melted in you mouth. Strawberry custard danish with honey salted ice cream. Need I say more. Already made my reservation for New Years which has been a tradition. Love the place.
I was here to celebrate a friends reunion with out-of-towners. Tar & Roses did not disappoint. This was my 2nd time dining here, and I really enjoyed this experience. The wine was great, the oxtail dumplings are UNREAL and our waiter was incredibly informative in the cuisine. We were pleasantly surprised with the venison and would definitely get it again. My only qualm is that they were out of 3 veggie dishes from their menu since it was later in the evening. We would have liked to order 1-2 of those but were satisfied with what was available. Overall, loved the meal and ambience. Will definitely return!
Nothing better on the west side!
Wrong choice for a special occasion. felt and behaved more like a fast food outlet with high turnover of covers. Menu sounds good but quality of produce didn’t live up to expectations. Did make an effort to rectify the situation but quality not good enough to make up for the rest.
After two bad dinners in Santa Monica, I finally found a special gem. The menu is imaginative and diverse. The food quality and preparations were among some of the best I have run across worldwide. My date and I shared 4 small plates and they were all surprising in composition and executed exceptional well. My only complaint is I didn't have room to sample every dish.
A class act! Don't miss Tar and Rose's
Always outstanding. We visit each time we come to Santa Monica.
The popcorn really is all it is hyped up to be. Also the strawberry costada was amazing! The carrots were my favorite of the veggies we ordered. The gnocchi was fantastic also. Friendly service. Our table was ready when we arrived!
First opportunity, and the experience matched both the website info as well as previous reviews. Wonderful, server-led meal and wine selection. From small bites to whole fish entrees the presentation and flavors were among the best. We were seated in an outside terrace with the roof retracted that added to the entire experience.
Amazing atmosphere, amazing service, but most of all one of the most delicious meal I have ever had!
We had two servers, one was really good and the other was so so. We enjoyed the food but we were both still extremely hungry after leaving the restaurant. I wouldn’t recommend to go there if you’re hungry and looking to indulge in a meal. Also, we were thrown off that the restaurant didn’t have liquor and just wine and beer only.
Awesome place! Great service and food. Cool atmosphere
This continues to be our #1 restaurant on the west side. The food is deliciously different and the service is absolutely the best (ask for Brad). They are happy to accommodate our dietary concerns and always make us feel like family.
Amazing dumplings with oxtail - highly recommended!
Nice dining experience with attentive staff. Good local and seasonal food choices. Also have a quieter patio in the back not visible from the street. Would recommend for a fun/cool night of dinner.
The music was so loud it was unbearable took a long time to get drinks
First time at this joint...Lovely staff, extensive wine choices and superb food...seated on outdoor patio and the ambience was perfect...5 stars!!!!
Sleeper was the octopus skewers...amazed!
Really liked the Octopus and Oxtail, the Strawberry Ricotta desert was delicious
First time here and the food and drinks were great! The service was also very good... attentive and nice!
I took clients to dinner here, and it was a memorable, enjoyable experience for all. We were seated a bit after our reservation time, but I had changed the reservation from 4 to 6 the day before, so I can understand if they had to make changes to accommodate. They more than made up for the late seating with three free appetizers, which were all delicious.
Ambiance-wise, Tar & Roses is quite cute and classy. Great for dates, birthdays, and business meals.
Food-wise, everything was mostly a hit. Not every dish stood out, but there also wasn't a bad dish. The fried snapper is sure to impress, as they bring out the fish whole and standing upright on the plate. It was an Instagram moment for sure. The duck breast and oxtail dumplings also stood out as memorable dishes. They also boast an impressive wine menu.
All in all, Tar & Roses provides great food in a great environment. I would definitely come back.
Super service. Top adresse. very fast service. Frendly Waitress. Quality of food .
Great food, amazing hospitality. Meal of the Year!
We love this restaurant. The oxtail dumplings are a MUST!
Even though we made reservation, we had to wait for 30 mins to be seated. Staffs kept taking care of us while we're waiting! It was kind of noisy but we enjoyed the atmosphere. We ordered oxtail dumplings, bone marrow, and hunger steak. Oxtail dumplings were good for appetizer and bone marrow was a little greasy for me but my husband loved it. We should have ordered hanger steak medium rare T.T Still it was tasty and side grilled veggies were so good! I really wanna have again strawberry crostata~~ Thanks for celebrating our 3rd year anniversary!
Since 4 years we keep on coming back to this wonderful place - super tasty and very special. 5+ stars!
Fantastic food and friendly attentive service
Brilliant from start to finish. Ingredients bursting with flavor. Properly treated to simply enhance them. This goes straight into my top dining experiences.
Bone marrow was so fresh I could have sworn it wiggled around on my plate?
We love Tar and Roses! This place is always fantastic, the food is delicious and the service is extremely friendly and easy going. We usually get the oxtail dumplings, the chili crab cakes and the shellfish pot that are so comforting and delicious but we tried new things this time. The Vietnamese-flavoured beef carpaccio was really refreshing and tasty, the baby artichokes were perfectly cooked and paired exceptionally well with the whole roasted branzino with the risotto and pea tendrils. Overall, a perfectly lovely meal in a very enjoyable atmosphere with wonderful service. Will always go back!
Everything was outstanding.
My wife and I live in the UK so hadn’t been for a couple of years and we were really looking forward to our visit although a little apprehensive that things might not be as good as we remembered. We needn’t have been concerned as everything was excellent to the extent we’ve already booked again for our last night in LA before returning home.
The owner was very rude upon our arrival about 25 minutes after our 5:45 pm reservation.....extremely heavy LA traffic was explained, but he did not seem to notice or care that it was our anniversary and that we had VIP status on Opentable. After making a big deal out of our tardiness and lecturing us like little school children, as if we were at Le Bernadin in New York City, he gave us a table with the caveat that we had to be finished by 8 pm for a big group that was coming. Be advised that there was no one waiting to check in at the host stand and no shortage of empty tables either indoors or out on the patio. We complied and left just before 8 pm, but no big group ever arrived and no one was waiting to get into the restaurant.
I wish we had just left after experiencing the owner's arrogance, as the food was completely mediocre compared to a prior visit over a year ago. Not sure what the big hype is all about as some of the dishes were just odd and did not display any particular display of culinary excellence. Final comment....the wines by the glass were very overpriced and the pores were so skinny that it was stunning.....could have been served in a shot glass rather than a wine glass.
Final warning.....the place is very loud, not due to crowd buzz, but the music blaring at 150 decibels.....that, in turn, made all of the restaurants patrons have to speak very loudly. My wife and I could barely hear each other over the din.
Our server was very professional, the one bright spot of the evening.
Took my husband for his birthday. He doesn't usually like trying new places, but I surprised him and he thoroughly enjoyed himself. The food was great; nice sized portions and interesting flavors. It was a great evening.
Everything was so good I can't pick a favorite dish to write about! We were a large group so were able to sample and share many of the menu options which was great. But, it would be equally good for a party of two to share just a select few dishes. We will definitely be going back!
