Tar & Roses
Friday & Saturday 5:30pm-10:30pm
What Insiders Are Saying
Tar and Roses exudes a classy calmness not often seen in this part of town.
We love this restaurant. The oxtail dumplings are a MUST!
Even though we made reservation, we had to wait for 30 mins to be seated. Staffs kept taking care of us while we're waiting! It was kind of noisy but we enjoyed the atmosphere. We ordered oxtail dumplings, bone marrow, and hunger steak. Oxtail dumplings were good for appetizer and bone marrow was a little greasy for me but my husband loved it. We should have ordered hanger steak medium rare T.T Still it was tasty and side grilled veggies were so good! I really wanna have again strawberry crostata~~ Thanks for celebrating our 3rd year anniversary!
Since 4 years we keep on coming back to this wonderful place - super tasty and very special. 5+ stars!
Fantastic food and friendly attentive service
Brilliant from start to finish. Ingredients bursting with flavor. Properly treated to simply enhance them. This goes straight into my top dining experiences.
Bone marrow was so fresh I could have sworn it wiggled around on my plate?
We love Tar and Roses! This place is always fantastic, the food is delicious and the service is extremely friendly and easy going. We usually get the oxtail dumplings, the chili crab cakes and the shellfish pot that are so comforting and delicious but we tried new things this time. The Vietnamese-flavoured beef carpaccio was really refreshing and tasty, the baby artichokes were perfectly cooked and paired exceptionally well with the whole roasted branzino with the risotto and pea tendrils. Overall, a perfectly lovely meal in a very enjoyable atmosphere with wonderful service. Will always go back!
Everything was outstanding.
My wife and I live in the UK so hadn’t been for a couple of years and we were really looking forward to our visit although a little apprehensive that things might not be as good as we remembered. We needn’t have been concerned as everything was excellent to the extent we’ve already booked again for our last night in LA before returning home.
The owner was very rude upon our arrival about 25 minutes after our 5:45 pm reservation.....extremely heavy LA traffic was explained, but he did not seem to notice or care that it was our anniversary and that we had VIP status on Opentable. After making a big deal out of our tardiness and lecturing us like little school children, as if we were at Le Bernadin in New York City, he gave us a table with the caveat that we had to be finished by 8 pm for a big group that was coming. Be advised that there was no one waiting to check in at the host stand and no shortage of empty tables either indoors or out on the patio. We complied and left just before 8 pm, but no big group ever arrived and no one was waiting to get into the restaurant.
I wish we had just left after experiencing the owner's arrogance, as the food was completely mediocre compared to a prior visit over a year ago. Not sure what the big hype is all about as some of the dishes were just odd and did not display any particular display of culinary excellence. Final comment....the wines by the glass were very overpriced and the pores were so skinny that it was stunning.....could have been served in a shot glass rather than a wine glass.
Final warning.....the place is very loud, not due to crowd buzz, but the music blaring at 150 decibels.....that, in turn, made all of the restaurants patrons have to speak very loudly. My wife and I could barely hear each other over the din.
Our server was very professional, the one bright spot of the evening.
Took my husband for his birthday. He doesn't usually like trying new places, but I surprised him and he thoroughly enjoyed himself. The food was great; nice sized portions and interesting flavors. It was a great evening.
Everything was so good I can't pick a favorite dish to write about! We were a large group so were able to sample and share many of the menu options which was great. But, it would be equally good for a party of two to share just a select few dishes. We will definitely be going back!
The outdoor seating in the back is particularly charming. And Julie, our server, was really great.
Just love Tar and Roses. This is a great place to take a special guest or friend. Service is exceptional. Environment is special but not stuffy. You can't go wrong here.
The chili crab cake was terrific! The signature dessert, strawberry ricotta rosemary tart is simply divine. A MUST try, even if reluctant. The food is creative and very well prepared. Fun and upbeat vibe.
An oasis of high quality and tasty food composed with creativity by the chef. Perfect service. A little expensive but still worth.
Amazing experience!! Would absolutely go again
My out of town friend was so excited about their food and had never enjoyed such a variety of unique dishes. Bravo!
Amazing everything! One of my favorite restaurants in LA. You have to try it!
Never disappoints. When I offered to take my boyfriend anyplace in LA for his birthday, he immediately responded with Tar & Roses.
Perfect balance of flavors. They periodically add new items, but we always start with the mouthwatering Oxtail Dumplings and Singapore Style Crabs Cakes.
Their consistency will keep us returning again and again.
Loved our anniversary dinner here. The whole fried Thai snapper is the best thing on the menu and a must-order! The restaurant was incredibly accommodating of dietary restrictions (gluten and dairy free) and the server was very knowledgeable and helpful.
AMAZING is an understatement!
They have always went above and beyond to truly make your dining experience one of a kind, and I have to say the last time I dined at Tar & roses they made us feel exceptionally warm and welcomed.
I will be coming back again and again, especially with the new additions to the menu (Seasonally) I can't wait to try the next offering.
My second time here and it was amazing! Even better than the first time which blew my mind! Really recommend it
The food was absolutely divine, and the service was excellent! We especially loved the oxtail dumplings and the gnocchi. I also had made an unusual request (I asked a waiter to play along with an inside joke), and he delivered perfectly! It is awesome when a restaurant as top-notch as Tar & Roses also goes above and beyond to make their guests experiences so memorable!
Went for mother's birthday...Service and food were great! Dessert amazing! Highly recommend for special occasions.
We had a fabulous meal here. Everything was delicious and our waitress was very helpful and informative. We were seated immediately even though we were early, which was great. Cool spot that we’d go back to anytime!
The consistency in the food is amazing. Every time. Every dish. We just love this place for special occasions and bringing friends from out of town. Very impressive.
Tar and Roses is a well run, professional, high end restaurant. The hosts are friendly and warm, as are the servers, whom are also very knowledgable about the menu and wine list, so do ask for their insights. Our appetizers, mains and desserts were all well timed so the pace throughout was great. The food itself is thoughtful, creative and of the highest quality. It is a splurge but well worth it.
Fantastic restaurant! Everything was outstanding.
We loved the food but the service was just wonderful. Everyone was warm and friendly and we were never rushed.
Best dining experience we had in Santa Monica by far !
It was my farewell to fifties bday dinner. Schleped up from South Bay for bone marrow. It did not disappoint. The oxtail dumplings, crab cake, cauliflower, lamb kabobs, were excellent. Oxtail probably best dish. Will definitely repeat.
Squid ink fettuccini and crabe cake were so good, but the wood roasted chicken was raw.
The ambiance and staff were lovely. The food I found it to be okay. It is nothing great nothing bad just a good place for the ambiance.
Really friendly service and delicious food using vegetables well
Delicious food. Excellent service. A little pricey.
Food was good but over priced for the amount of food. Too loud and too crowded. Could not hear the person I was sitting .with.
