To our dear friends, neighbors, and guests, After over seventeen years of memorable evenings, Tapenade is closing. We have been proud to contribute fine food and stellar service to you.

We will be re-opening mid-July at our new location as Bistro Du Marché and hope that you will join us on our new culinary adventure. We will be located on 7437 Girard Avenue, La Jolla. The food was delicious, and our server Stevie took exceptional care of us. She and the amazing food made for a truly wonderful experience. We look forward to dining with them again at Bistro du Marche' after it opens in July.

However, last Saturday night was its closing night as it lost its lease. They are reopening as a more "intimate" Bistro in July. We cannot wait for the new restaurant. It will still be in La Jolla in the village.

                                                                                                        This restaurant is a must for us whenever we are in the LaJolla area, and it never disappoints. The hardest part is making menu decisions because there are so many great choices. On this visit we shared the charcuterie platter, which we usually do, I chose the duck breast,which was presented with a yummy carrot purée and a perfectly prepared mix of green spring veges, and my hubby chose the pasta with a very light bolognase sauce. And, since our entrees were reasonably light, that left room to share the warm chocolate ganache with coconut ice cream. Yum! And, as always, the service was tHe right Amount of friendly and very attentive.

                                                                                                        Tapenade was one of the first restaurants we ate at when we moved to SD from the NY metropolitan area in 2000. It reassured us that civilization existed in southern CA. Over the years Tapenade has been a family favorite. Many of our family celebrations have been at this restaurant on Fay. Many anniversaries and birthdays. My daughter's bat mitzvah party was here, and when we visit I can recall some dear people who have since passed on. Food here is unpretentiontious, not slaves to trend; reliably excellent delicious french food, served with warmth and classic professionalism, so often lacking now. We love the look and feel of this place. For us it is perfection. This was likely our last meal here before the restaurant moves. We will miss this Fay location that holds so many memories for us. We look forward to collecting new memories and eating french comfort food at the new Tapenade. We are sure it will be equally wonderful.

The food is wonderful, but the service is really top notch. Food is good at a lot of places but here the wait-staff is very well trained and professional. Despite the higher prices we feel the service is so exceptional that it really makes dining out a pleasure. It is always a disappointment when we go to another restaurant and have to ask to get things that should be already on the table, or wait for the waiter to show up or slow service. At Tapenade you know you are their first priority.

This visit was during their annual mussel festival, and our mussels were great! Lots of excellent bread to soak up the broth, too. We also enjoyed a salad and a terrine for appetizers. We have never had anything but a wonderful meal and enjoyable experience at Tapenade and will continue to return.

Mango salsa served with the Gougères was a nice twist. Mussels were fresh & plentiful although I was puzzled why the ample amount of visible garlic did not impart its signature flavor. The crab salad was delicious and beautiful. My fellow diner liked the disc of burnt sugar that topped the salad. (I did not want to taste that touch.). Desserts were a highlight -- the cheesecake was really divine -- texture not too dense, not too fluffy -- just right & packed with flavor. Crème brûlée & chocolate dessert also outstanding. Will return as soon as possible & will hope for foie gras.

It takes a lot of experience, an eye for quality produce, discipline, and top-flight training to prepare and serve French food properly. Tapenade's food is superb, and superbly served by experience waiters. If you are the kind of person who notices details and becomes irritated by small mistakes in either the food, its preparation or service, then Tapenade is a sanctuary for you. They have never made a mistake in all the times I've been there. You can relax and enjoy the food. Which is utterly and consistently delicious (starters, mains and desserts).

By the time we return next winter, they will have relocated to Girard St., but we anticipate the same wonderful food. This meal included foie gras, the halibut special and wild boar pappardelle, accompanied by a good Bordeaux Merlot blend. Dessert was a light Baba au Rhum that provided a nice finish to a fine meal. We look forward to next winter in the new location.

Great food and service and understated elegance are hallmarks each time. The Tournedos and veal Osso Bucco Milanaise were excellent and the fine charcuterie plate to start was varied and nicely-presented. Always a great meal here.

                                                                                                        During the recent restaurant week we went back to Tapenade on a whim. We knew the food would be good; just didn't know if it would be too packed to enjoy a night together. We also knew something else: that, as 'restaurant week' has become nearly a joke - except for the restaurants - that Tapenade wouldn't succumb to the over-commercialization the week has morphed into. For far too many restaurants now, it's over-priced, under-served, boring tidbits served while you're crammed into a space barely big enough for two.Forget about having a conversation. But not Tapenade. It's menu for restaurant week was simply surprising and delicious and great value. From quail-stuffed pastry appetizer to home-made profiteroles drizzled in dark chocolate surrounded by creme anglais, every meal choice was mouth-watering and made you think hard about having to choose which of the three choices of appetizer, entree and dessert to try. Incredible selection, incredibly tasting, impeccably prepared and served...and in the middle of 'restaurant week'. Simply superb.

It is like a French bistro, indeed. We had the special menu with wine pairing; the main dish of scallops was not great, but the appetizer and dessert were good. If they improve on the food somewhat, they will be unbeatable! The service was good.

It is as if they are striving for average......not an ambitious goal to improve the guest experience. The interior is tired and out of date, the sound bounces around the room so the notion of a romantic dinner is out of the question. Unfortunately there is nothing special about the place, the menu, the service ....but you do get a bit of Parisian attitude. Having lived in Paris for three years I didn't need to be reminded of that when everything else was so average. We wont be back.

                                                                                                        We came for Christmas Eve dinner-every item served was outstanding, and the waiter was wonderful; perfectly timed and exquisitely polite. I had the St. Jacques risotto, which was creamy and the scallops were sweet and delicious. My husband had the charcuterie plate as an entre and loved it, especially the pate and the tiny pickled mushrooms. We also got the gnocchi and the cream spinach; both were excellent. The apple tarte for dessert was exactly right for sharing after a very satisfying meal, not too big and not too sweet, just light and flavorful. I think the waiter's name was Stevie? Doesn't seem right, she seemed more like a Stephaine, but she was lovely. Best choice for an elegant, classically French dinner, we will certainly return.

The most notable is the food, but even more important is the service. The staff is well trained and efficient. You never have to ask for more bread or water, it magically appears. That is one of my greatest complaints lately about restaurants is the lack of good efficient waiters. The food is excellent. The owner/chef is from France and did his culinary training there. The salmon and steak are our favorite entrees but their pasta dish and coq au vine is delicious as well. Their wine selection is good. The only complaint I have are the prices are high, but just for the outstanding service alone we go back often.

                                                                                                        Restaurant is beautiful and the staff is the best in San Diego. Knowledgeable, helpful while being not tooooo chatty. Food is always well-prepared and served with flare. We've never had a bad meal and we've eaten there many, many times.

                                                                                                        Tapenade is a wonderful restaurant, but I was disappointed the last time I went there for lunch. I wanted to treat my friend to a delicious lunch, and Tapenade had advertised a special prix fixe menu that featured beaujolais nouveau. That is my friend's favorite kind of wine, which is why I chose the restaurant. When the time came to order, I told our server that we wanted the special menu. He said that they were saving the beaujolais for dinner. Later he mentioned that the wine hadn't yet arrived, but they were watching for the delivery. I realize that they couldn't serve the beaujolais if their shipment hadn't arrived, but I wonder about the wisdom of advertising a special meal when the arrival is iffy. I would have liked to have the rest of the prix fixe meal even if the wine hadn't arrived, but we were not given that option. I didn't want to make a fuss about it because I was with my guest, but it seems that we should have been given some consideration (a free dessert or at least an apology).

                                                                                                        Tapenade can be one of the best meals in La Jolla. They have also had off nights. The indoor atmosphere is quiet and serene, nice for a restaurant where one can actually talk to one's partner! The wines are excellent, the food classic, the service very good.

                                                                                                        If you were to get into a time machine and travel back 20 or 30 years to see what "fancy" French restaurants used to be like, this is what you'd find. The menu is standard, the prep conventional, and a look around the room shows the patrons are regulars who have been going there for a long time; I would say the average age of the diners was 70, which says a lot of what could be expected. The service was excellent but anachronistic to the point of being silly: I was called Monsieur and my wife Madame. The food ranged from good (Tournedos of beef, Coquille St. Jacques) to mediocre (coq au vin: gummy sauce, dry chicken, and where were the lardons of bacon?) but overall unimaginative. If you want predictability, though, this place is for you.
