Tapalaya is the worlds first tapas (small-plates) restaurant serving Modern Cajun/Creole with a Vietnamese Twist.
Everything on our menu is made from scratch, with love. At Tapalaya we have our own farm in West Linn, OR that supplies us with wonderful seasonal ingredients. The plates of food are small to medium sized but rich and full of flavor, perfect for sharing and pairing. Menu items highlights include Crawfish Anh Luu, Jambalaya, Turmeric Red Beans and Rice, Blackened Octopus, and Beignets.

This place was just awesome from walking in to the end. There was a live 3 piece band (sax, bass, and .. .ummm something else) that worked to make it a more Nola experience.
The service was fast and friendly, very welcoming, and all with a big warm smile. When we asked for recommendations, they were full of suggestions and certainly not wrong.
I started with the fried okra which was definitely the right way to start. I LOVED the dining sauce with it. Not greasy, totally flavorful, and not so much to be hungry for your main course.
For dinner, I had the seafood and andouille gumbo as well as the fried catfish. Both were absolutely fantastic! The fried catfish wasn't greasy, was light, incredibly flavorful breading and I'd order it again in a heartbeat. I may have just drooled on my own keyboard in writing about it.
My friend had the vegetarian Jambalaya which she loved! It wasn't too heavy and was tangy and delicious.
For desert - bread pudding with pumpkin gelato which made the world a better place. They have their flavor combinations DOWN! Great experience all the way around, I will most certainly be back
Service was great. The food was not as good as we thought based on pictures from other reviews.
For example, shrimp and grits looked like large gulf prawns head-on in photos, but the actual dish looked like defrosted cocktail shrimp. Good flavor though.
Oyster Benedict was ok but oysters could use seasoning and the hollandaise was straight butter. Oyster breading could have incorporated cornmeal to be more southern Cajun.
Pork bowl looked like left over microwave pork with gravy and an egg. Taste the same as above.
The place next door had full tables for brunch. Tapalaya only had four tables in use.
Staff was great though. Food uninspired, but it was probably great at one time. Prices could be lower due to this fact.
Probably need to try dinner, instead of brunch
Fabulous! We are big fans of Cajun food and visit New Orleans & Cajun Country every year. The idea of Cajun-Vietnamese fusion works so well. Eveything we tried was flavorful and a taste sensation. The nachos were yummy, the hush puppies amazing, the octopus tender and SO delicious, the pork belly outstanding and spinach au gratin had lovely hints of period. Someone at the bar knows how to make classic Nawlins cocktails...both the Sazerac and Ramos Gin Fizz were authentic. We don't live in Portland but can't wait to go back next visit.!!!
The food and service were great, the only thing lowering my rating here is that I made a reservation for a business meal, and the live music made it much more difficult to converse during the meal. I wish I'd had some way of knowing there would be live music when I made the reservation through OpenTable. I do look forward to returning to Tapalaya on other occasions.
Went to Tapalaya for my birthday dinner and the food was very flavorful. Was impressed with every dish that was served to me, I ordered the fried chicken, Mac and cheese, Brussels sprouts and corn bread, everything tasted amazing. The only complaint I have is that the chicken was a bit undercooked, I saw a little blood after I took a bite. However, the staff was great and replaced my order when I pointed this out. Definitely recommend.
The food was my biggest disappointment honestly. My boyfriend and I have eaten here at least 5 times and the food was wonderful, the last time we went here was at least a year ago.
Crab stuffed squid was under seasoned and weirdly textured, the squid was fishy and the tom khan sauce was so sweet. The spinach potatoes were watery and sweet as well and the jambalaya was boring.
I want to give this place another shot I really do. Maybe next year.
We have been to this restaurant before and as a Cajun place it had one of the most consistent kitchens in Portland. Now with the fusion Vietnamese /Cajun the food was not good overall. Our server was aloof, inattentive and barely checked back (forget having a water glass refilled or a second round of drinks arrive in a timely fashion). Also the cocktail program at the restaurant was previously good and is now poor. We are unlikely to return.
Home style Cajun/creole cooking. The oysters are moist, crunchy and down right delicious!
Jambalaya had the right amount of Andoulle, chicken and shrimp, was seasoned well.
The grilled blackened Octopus was a little dry but had good flavor. Braised greens are delicious, you can get them with bacon or without.
Martini was fabulous. Fun, low key restaurant in the hood.
Overall, not bad really. The mixed drinks could have used a little more liquor. Service was a bit spotty. Slight consternation registered when too many questions were asked about the menu items (2 questions per person seemed to be the limit. Admittedly, small sample size (my wife and myself.)
But overall the menu had some interesting choices. I had the Jambalaya. The rice was really sticky kind of globby (sp). I like it that way. It gives that Southern comfort food feeling.
BTW you can park in the Whole Foods lot behind the restaurant rather than circle the surrounding blocks for a teeny space.
4 of us went to Tapalaya early on Saturday nite . we were seated right away and our waitress guided us thru selections. We all sampled the jambalaya, awesome stuffed mushrooms, cesear salad with excellent fried capers, crawfish Ahn Luu dish (creamy and wonderful!), fish sauce wings and fried okra. all was superb. for dessert we had the beignets and an intriguing tasting casava cake (sp?). the happy hour down river drop went down very easy - and at a great price.
Went there to celebrate a friends birthday. I had mentioned it while booking reservations. I thought maybe the restaurant was going to do a mini dessert so we can sing happy birthday. That didn't happen and I was a little disappointed because this is the first restaurant that I have went to that didn't do that. The waitress didn't even say happy birthday.
Tapalaya was just plain outstanding! The Cajun/creole food with a Vietnamese twist was spectacular and the freshness and quality were out of sight! Great little neighborhood spot with friendly waiter! There were four of us, so the sharing of many small plates made the visit even better. All four of us have eaten in New Orleans multiple times and this ranks right up there. If you haven’t been, you have to go!
Our group of six (three couples) had a quick dinner at Tapalaya before heading to the Moda Center for a show. Service was great from the get-go. The space isn't huge, the the layout allows for a few tables of larger groups, and they're still able to get food to the table fast. This was perfect for our tight Friday-night timeline.
The food (Cajun inspired) tapas is excellent. Taste is authentic and spot on. Genius idea to have it in tapas so you can enjoy a variety of stuff. The creamed spinach was delicious, the shrimp hush puppies to die for. The fried oysters, the best anywhere. The beading was light yet perfectly crisp. The jambalaya is must have. Go enjoy yourself with the taste and flavors of
NOLA you won't be be disappointed.....
The restaurant itself is a nice place, but the food was so-so. It was expensive for the amount and not the level of quality we had when were in New Orleans. Also, we tried some dishes that were supposed to have a Vietnamese twist and didn't find anything remotely close.
Being from New Orleans I really enjoyed the seafood gumbo. Best I've had in a long time. The rest of the looked outstanding can't wait to go back and try the other menu items. Also wanted to give a shout out the wait staff and the kitchen staff that went the extra mile to accommodate my wife's vegetarian needs.
I was kind of disappointed with the food. The fried chicken was small and not the best. Maybe I'm a tough critic because I am from the south. The salad I ordered took forever to come out. And the cole slaw was really really bad. To their credit, we had a wonderful waitress, and they have a really good bread pudding for dessert. Other than that, can't say I would really recommend the place.
Three words: Crawfish. Etoufee. Nachos. You must not miss these awesome morsels! Delicious, 5-spice wonton chips covered in lightly spicy crawfish etoufee , melty cheddar & cotija cheeses, green onions & cilantro. They sounded strange, but were oh, so swoonworthy. The spicy Asian slaw and vegetarian jambalaya were excellent as well. Drinks are well-crafted and service is good. We have been dining at Tapalaya for many years and it is always a very pleasant experience.
Delicious! A good variety of tapas plates, and every single one of the 7 plates we ordered was excellent. I didn't feel like we overpaid, once the check was split across the 4 of us, but it always takes me slightly aback when the price for a tapas plate is almost as much as a single entree. However, I would go back and I would recommend it strongly. The food was always fresh and hot when it got to our table, and it was fun having enough people to order several different plates!
