Tanoshii - West Loop
Focus on Japanese Cuisine with a farm- to -table style of dining. The Omakase style of dining is unlike anything else in the city, allowing the Chefs to create a coursed meal featuring artistic sushi creations, makimono and handmade sauces. with signature items including seared blue fin tuna served with a chive sauce, avocado and truffle honey. It really doesn’t matter what meal you enjoy at Tanoshii - just know it will be delightful.

My now husband and I went here after our small wedding on November 14th to enjoy our first 'date night' together as husband and wife. We did the Omakase, which I would highly recommend, which was a chef's choice meal. We are adventurous eaters, but I am allergic to eel and they more than complied. The fish was fresh, the appetizers prepared and explained and they never once implied us leaving, after we sat there for a littttle too long. Our server brought out sake she thought we would enjoy, made recommendations on sashimi and nigiri and was just so attentive and personable. In regards to COVID, they have these little mini-huts outside with heaters and a door. We will absolutely be back, this was the best sushi I have had in awhile.
Try the Chef's special rolls - they are to die for! Some of the most innovative rolls I've ever had!
Was recommended by a friend. Just a horrible dining experience over all. Food was “ok” (my wife ordered a la carte and I had the full Omakase), and extremely overrated compared to other area sushi restaurants. Service was deplorable. Everyone around us was frustrated, even watched a couple wait 20 minutes after being seated, unacknowledged, and got up and left (we timed it on our phones out of boredom and entertainment). The owner was walking around completely useless, which seemed to make things worse. I get that every restaurant has their moments where service lapses. This was more than that. There is something inherently wrong with the ownership culture there. Won’t be back. Total waste of $200.
Great friendly service! Delicious and fresh-tasting fish! Will definitely need to come here again!
Flavorful & very fresh fish
Special rolls are a must. They are creative, packed with thoughtfully balanced flavors & not heavy on the rice
Service is friendly & attentive
Girlfriend and I went for her birthday to get Sushi here based on it having good reviews. We were a bit skeptical as there’s not as many options on the menu for sushi rolls as typical places we go to.
It was amazing! First, the chef’s rolls option were out of this world, our favorite ever! Secondly, there menu options of the more common rolls you’d see at a typical sushi spot were also good.
Between the wine and chefs rolls, we’ll be coming back a lot more.
Food was spectacular and the service was fun and friendly
Sushi chef choice is the best. Never had a roll I didn't like!
Average place average food. Everything was over salty
Yes, I would recommend this place for dinner. It is a great spot for a date. Sushi was delicious!
Delicious food, good recs from staff
Hands down best food in Chicago! Amazing quality and omasake
Great food, great service and pretty decent ambience inside. You have the option to sit outside on a nice warm day as well. I love that the chef makes special rolls that aren't on the menu
Great sushi place on the edge of the West Loop. We chose the omakase option and enjoyed each of the chef's selections. Service was prompt and helpful. All-in-all a really nice evening and we'll definitely be back!
Road noise was a little unpleasant. Food was excellent. Service was pretty good. She brought our check the minute we set our chopsticks down, which always irks just a little (place was empty and we had half a bottle of wine left).
A little bit upscale sushi, has a very nice array of live plants, unrelated to sushi. However, overall a little too expensive for sushi that was pretty normal tasting.
We loved the sushi so much we came back the very next day to get it again for takeout. Because we did the chefs choice, we didn’t know exactly what we had previously received. The staff took the time to find our receipt from the previous day and figure out what we ordered. Couldn’t recommend more. 10 stars.
Omasake was incredible. Will definitely be going back for it.
Terrible sushi, dry rice on roll, small portion of fish, microwaved edamame..
Best sushi we’ve ever had! Well definitely be back!
Tanoshii was one of the first sushi spots I went to when I moved into the city 5 years ago. As we wine and dine constantly in my field, I have tried many other sushi spots throughout the city and I always wish I was at Tanoshii. Sushi Mike literally has the secret sauce!! If you're looking for a place that covers every roll in spicy mayo to hide their subpar ingredients this place is definitely not for you. Go enjoy that somewhere that is $20 all you can eat of rice. But if you're into fresh, beautiful cuts of fish and shellfish Sushi Mike will surprise you with each roll when you order their Omakase which I cannot recommend enough. Over the years I have shared this spot on date nights, with roommates and other business professionals and they are always complimenting my restaurant choice. Thank you guys for another delicious dinner, until next time!
This place was amazing for my 25th bday. I was on a 5th a date and the guy was super cool and understanding because I was really tired from bar cargo (decent pizza lots of booze). He made me try salmon and toro. I think I liked it but not forsure yet. Ultimately, I like this place.
Staff very attentive and kind. Food was great. Ambience very nice.
Overall disappointing experience especially after what we’ve heard about the Andersonville location. Eel tasted uncommonly fishy, rice was dry, and sake nigiri was tasteless and ice cold. Nice ambience and friendly staff.
Amazing service and delicious food! Would definitely recommend for date night!
Great food great staff
I came here alone for dinner. I took Caylee’s suggestion for the Omakase. I enjoyed two appetizers, a nigiri selection, as well as two half orders of chef picked rolls. Everything tasted extremely fresh. My only issue was that I was still fairly hungry at the end of the meal, wishing that I had brought another person.
This place has been a long time favorite of mine, and they came back better than ever. It was the first night open, the service was fantastic, sushi was fresh, and environment was calm. One of the best spots for sushi in the city hands down!
Sushi was wonderful. We had the maki omakase which was delicious and we would definitely do again!
The waiter was not attentive and the most we all have ever waited for sushi. We had to ask for essentials like soy sauce, wasabi/ginger, etc. Even trying to get the waiters attention was difficult as he would not look around rven when he was even at the table next to us
So good, the Omakase was great! Not a bad plate the whole night.
We ate here on a Thursday night, and the place was surprisingly empty, considering the quality. Great, attentive service. Good drinks options, including Japanese whisky that you don't see at other places. The chef's special rolls were fantastic.
Tanoshi has the best sushi in the city. Tell the chef what you like - tuna, salmon, crab and he'll make the most delicious and unusual rolls you have ever eaten. The chef's mushroom roll is always available and so spectacular. This is not your normal sushi rolls. The bluefin shashimi appetizer is not to be missed.
Sushi was solid, slightly more expensive than others but also less expensive than some. Very above average and close to us
The waiter spilled a drink all over my suede boots and didn’t really seem to care.
Neither he nor management apologized or checked in on my or my boot.
Overall good food just the aesthetic was not ideal.
Great meal. Wonderful service.
Overpriced, unsatisfying and awful.
Food was good service was excellent!
