Petillant Naturel, or mildly, naturally sparkling and sometimes called Methode Ancestrale, refers to a style of wine in which the winemaker stops barrel fermentation before all the natural sugar has fermented by sealing the wine in bottle. As the yeast eats the remaining sugar carbon dioxide is released creating a gently bubbly wine that typically will have a touch of sweetness. This is a Pinot Noir to kick back and enjoy with notes of young strawberries, watermelon rind, blood orange, and white pepper, a cloudy pale ruby color, and a yeasty, yummy froth.

The Duc de Romet, made by Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy, is a delightfully balanced Blanc de Noirs made from purchased grapes from many of Geoffroy's small-producer colleagues. A fine, creamy mousse defines this elegant version, underscored by a chalky note of minerality and offering subtle notes of patisserie apple, blanched almond, fresh ginger and a hint of crystallized honey.
At the young age of 29 years old, Julien Braud is one of only a handful of the next generation of winemakers in the region. He uses horses in his vineyards to minimize soil compaction, hand harvests, uses only natural yeasts for fermentation after a gentle press, and ages the wines on their lees in glass-lined, underground cement vats. A truly quality-minded approach that has resulted in wines of complexity, texture and balance. His 40oz Muscadet is a speical cuvee for the United States; bottled and labeled for a nostalgic look at drinking culture. The wine is dry, racy, precise, and reminiscent of the sea.
Although now grown all over the world, the slopes of Rias Baixas continue to produce the best Albarino. This one, with long family roots and standing traditions, has beautiful aromatics and a little lees contact to add fullness.
Nestled in the tiny village of Sury-en-Vaux, husband and wife team, Christian and Karine, have taken their generations old vineyard to a new level with great care. Notes of gooseberry, green apple and a hint of white flowers balance beautifully. A perfectly indicative Sancerre, but with a lush nose of fruit that says: this is Sauvignon Blanc at its finest. North Fork Project is a joint venture from Cutchogue's Pellegrini Vineyards and Scott Gerber, a partner of importer/distributor Martin Scott. The aim is to put locally produced, sustainably farmed, and good tasting wines on Tri-Stater's tables without a lot of hype, muss or fuss. Their Chardonnay is crisp and vibrant with easy fruit and mineral notes.
Dr. Bürklin-Wolf is the largest private wine estate in Germany with 85 hectares in the heart of the Pfalz's renowned Mittlehaardt. They have a history of winemaking that stretches back to 1597, and over the centuries have consistently been pioneers and trailblazers for advances in German viticulture and wine quality. Their Riesling is medium-bodied and dry, with expressive aromas of stone fruit, white flower and a hint of petrol. Continuing to the palate with notes of apricot, ripe pear and orange peel with flint, minerailty and mouthwatering acidity.
The entrepeneur Giovanni Marchiorello created Marchiopolo with the idea of creating a product of exceptional quality utilizing the best native Italian varieties. His Poncale is a blend of Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia, and Chardonnay; it offers decided mineral notes on the nose, that blend with notes of jasmine, scents of acacia, and almond flowers. These notes move to the palate of this full and fresh cuvee, with great body, acidity, and balance.
Banyan Wines is a father and son project from Somchai and Kenny Likitprakong born out of a mutual passion for wine. Their philosophy is to use only sustainable and/or organically farmed grapes from vineyards in regions with microclimates ideally suited for the particular variety. Their Gewurztraminer offers bright citrus fruit flavors and a deeper notes of white peach and passion fruit, finishing spicy and dry, with a touch of honeysuckle.
Roger Lassarat comes from a family of Vergisson wine makers in the Mâcon region of Burgundy, and he set up on his own in 1969 with the aim of producing high quality, terroir driven, organic wines. His excellent Terroir de Vergisson is big and lush with mouth-watering acidity, ripe white peaches, green apples, and just a touch of oak.
Yes, this is the same wine listed above. The reason we are pouring this 2010 vintage in conjunction with the 2012 is that they are wildly different. The 2010 vintage oxidized in the bottle creating a profile more similar to fino sherry than to the wine listed above. A perfect wine for cheese and lighter fare, featuring citrus notes, jasmin, and acacia.

The Langmann winery specializes in Schilcher (Blauer Wildbacher), one of the oldest grape varietals cultivated in Central Europe, dating back to Celtic times. This wild rosé is dark with bright berry notes, herbal accents, and undertones of minerality. Bubbles add lift and exuberance, making this wine a treat anytime.
Giorgio Cicchero's family has been producing wine since 1883, and has teamed up with longtime producer Pier Carlo Bergaglio to produce their intriguing Dolcetto Rose. Using high elevation vineyards from 35 year old vines, Giorgio and Pier Carlo produced only 350 cases of this wine. There rose is bright and filled with floral notes, citrus peel, lush red berry, crisp minerality, and finishes with delicate tannins.
We simply must have a Provence Rose on the list, right? Well of many we tasted, this caught our eye for the usual suspects - hinting on melon, full of seashells, pretty as heck - but also because it's made naturally and because it's a 6 grape blend! Utterly elegant.
Silver Thread Vineyard was established in 1982 on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake. The winery is named for a local waterfall, Silver Thread Falls, known as one of the loveliest in the Finger Lakes. Luc Sebille, the protégé of Olivier Cousin, farms 14 magnificent hectares of old-vine Cabernet Franc in the heart of the Chinon. Luc has developed a distinct style of his own, but continues under his mentor's influence to use a horse for as much of the vineyard work as possible. His Chinon is of an unusually velvety texture with classic bell pepper flavors, dark fruit, spice, and fresh farmy finish.
The winery is based in the early nineteenth century complex of Agliano Terme, which has been in the family since the 1920s. The family believes that the underrated Barbera grape is a variety capable of producing wines of profound complexity and serious longevity, with this in mind, the family farms all of their vines organically and are extremely meticulous with their viticulture. Their Terra Del Noce is a gorgeous wine with up front lush fruit notes that soften in favor of notes of leather, tobacco, menthol, licorice, and herbs.
After years of acquiring vineyards, Antonio Fernandez-Aliaga and his family built their winery in 1999. Their 2002 "Antonia Corpus" is smooth, velvety and made with old vine Garnacha. The real deal - a family run, Montalcino born estate - here creating a voluptuous Sangiovese with dark, giving fruit, spice, and beautiful, silky tannins. This staff favorite took a few vintages off from our list, but is now back and better than ever.
The Phoenicians brought Aglianico to Italy from Greece, and was the favorite wine of Pope Paul III. This wine is full of ripe fruit and almonds with undertones of leather and wood notes. Velvety, well-balanced tannins and a long finish round out this great introduction to this ancient varietal.
The small size of the estate allows for extreme attention to details, grapes are hand harvested through three manual sortings then lightly crushed in a handmill. This "left bank" blend of 50% cabernet sauvignon, 45% merlot, and 5% cabernet france gives us an elegantly structured wine highligted by bright red cherries and mulberries, steeped black currants, leather, tobacco and tar with a light spice and pepper finish.
Cascina del Torcc is part of the Terre del Barolo umbrella of vineyards. Terre del Barolo is a co-operative of winemakers founded in 1958 with 22 original members that has now grown to over 350 members. The Cascina del Torcc Barolo is a lighter more approachable style, but wonderfully structured, with firm tannins, wild black fruits, notes of cedar, tobacco, and violets leading into a long, intense yet graceful finish.
"Embroosh" means bewitching in Catalan and that's an apt description. From the first whiff of spice, cigar box, cocoa powder, and dark berries, we were enchanted. Garnacha, Carinyena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot blend beautifully with such concentration and incredible structure and finish. Deep, rich and transporting…close your eyes and imagine the Catalan hills around you.
An orange wine section? Absolutely. "Orange wines" are white wines aged extensively on their skins, seeds & stems, until the juice obtains a tannic character. Aging and fermentation are often done in open air, so the wine partly oxidizes; thus its distinctive burnt-orangey color. Some growers go further and utilize clay amphorae buried in the ground; others use opentop barrels. All are pursuing a highly natural, anti-technological vinification - an homage to the methods of a bygone age. We love 'em and hope you try 'em. If you feel the love - fantastic! Vitovska is a varietal found in the region of Friuli, more specifically the Carso, which is very close to Slovenia. Benjamin Zidarich is a driving force behind wine from Carso-having worked for Radikon, he practices biodynamic farming and seeks to provide a pure expression of the land and grapes. With a soft pale orange color and delicate sea-breeze and fresh mandarin flower on the nose; the wine is full yet agile, pure yet briny. It's a conundrum in the most beautiful of ways.
Pinot Grigio! Yes, but Stanko Radikon's philosophy of making a natural and organic wine shines through with the first sip. Here you have 2 weeks of skin maceration and barrel aging for a year, creating a beautiful shimmering apricot colored wine. A thinker's wine; the possible notes, flavors, and textures one can find when drinking this wine are truly satisfying to any wine lover.
Classic Jura-this means oxidative and interesting! Savagnin, a native varietal of the region, is a genetic mystery; most believe that Pinot Noir is an offspring of the grape and others might argue that Traminer and Savagnin are the same. Whatever the story might be, Savagnin is at home in the Jura!
The granddaddy of orange wines. Hand-harvested grapes soaked for roughly a month on their skins, then fermented in large, old barrels without temperature control, no added yeasts or enzymes, and little use of sulfur. The final wine is simply "how my grandfather made wine in the 30's", shrugs Stanko Radikon. Sherryish, super savory, earthy, still amazingly fresh-tasting and alive; a puzzlement to the palate and a tour de force.
Just across the border of Friuli, Ales Kristancic makes wines with experimentation flowing through their veins. The Lunar is his ultimate challenge: almost no human contact or effect. Human hands harvest the grapes, otherwise there is nothing added, pressed, force-stabilized, filtered or fined. Seven months later, after natural vinification in custom-made barriques, bottled only during a full moon, we get pure grape juice tasting of minerals and savory sunbeams. Cidery, bready, with hints of tea and herbs. Tannins don't overpower; the wine is uplifting on the finish. A unique wonder.

Recaredo Mata Casanovas is on every short list of finest Cava producers. His 2008 Brut Nature Gran Reserva was produced from the three traditional Cava varieties: 60 Xarello, 30% Macabeu, and 10% Parallada. It offers a splendid bouquet of almonds, citrus, and apple notes that translate directly to the palate with a lengthy, refreshing finish.
Luigi Ferrando has long been the leading producer of wines from the Canavese region where his family's winemaking tradition goes back to 1900. This unique sparkling wine made from Erbaluce is aged in bottle for 18 to 36 months, all in the Champagne tradition. Great floral notes and minerality dominate; with an elegant mouthfeel and a long finish.
Ferrari was born over a century ago in 1902 through the efforts of Giulio Ferrari. After his studies in France, Ferrari returned to Trentino, Italy and planted Chardonnay, which no one had done before. Ferrari was convinced that through the combination of Trentino terroir, the innovative use of Chardonnay and the use of the traditional "metodo classico", he could make world-class sparkling wines. Today, Ferrari wines are some of the most sought after and awarded sparkling wines in the world. Their Brut is fresh and lasting, with significant overtones of ripe golden apples, wild flowers and a slight and pleasant finish of ripe fruit and a hint of bread-crust.
The Reichsrat von Buhl estate has been in existence for over 200 years. Their estate and its buildings are protected as a national monument. In 1869, their Rieslings were served at the opening of the Suez Canal. Their Riesling Brut is bright with delicious minerality, notes of citrus, honey-coated almond, apricot, apple, and finishing with orange oil, lemon blossom, elderflower, and great salinity.

François Chidaine worked alongside his father Yves for many years, and today he devoutly manages an estate blessed with vines between 40 and 80 years old. He works his vineyards biodynamically, but does not want any mention of biodynamic viticulture on his bottles even though the estate has been Demeter certified since 2003. For Francois, it is about the work not the notoriety. His Sauvignon Blanc boasts notes of citrus, honeysuckly, and stonefruit, followed by lovely acid and mineral undertones.

The Forstreiter family has been making wine since 1868, but it has been the current owner and winemaker, Meinhard Forstreiter, who has brought the vineyard to a new level of quality and reputation. The first white wine produced by Borgogno after over 250 years of history. Their intent was to make a white wine that could be comparable to their Barolos, so they chose Riesling! This wine comes from young vines of Riesling, among the hills of the Langhe that allow the grapes to maintain freshness and acidity. On the palate notes of citrus and grapefruit dominate with a bright acidity, and minerality on the finish.

The Thanisch family has been involved in the wine trade for more than 350 years. The estate is currently managed by Sofia Thanisch-Spier, the fifth generation of women to do so after the passing of the esteemed doctor. This big fullbodied wine behaves really more like a powerful Spatlese than a Kabinett. As such, it offers satisfying flavors of yellow fruits, some exotic scents from a clear botrytis impact and a joyful rich but zesty finish.
This wine needs and wants no introduction. Rich citrus overtones to the passion fruit, melon and baked pineapple flavors. Like laying in a hammock under a palm tree on a warm, breezy day, but with killer acid. Words like 'delicious' don't begin to describe.
A collectible, legendary, classic riesling in a stellar year. A knockout of super ripe honeyed apricots and pears, beautifully balanced with acidity, a plush mouthfeel and a long finish.
In 1990 Denis Pommier inherited 2.5 hectares of land that he and his wife Isabelle have since expanded to over 16 hectares. This husband and wife team produce some of the most reknowned wines in the region. Their Petit Chablis is hand harvested and then fermented in stainless steel aging 6 months on its lees. The result is a fresh and floral nose with light fruit notes, minerality, salinity, and a clean and refreshing acidity.
From third generation winemakers comes "Costebianche", referring to the calcium-rich soils in the vineyards of this estate. It all started in 1996 when Kibbutz Tzuba made a highly fortuitous and almost prophetic decision to plant 110 acres of grape vines! But, it wasn't until 2000 that the Kibbutz decided to stop selling all their grapes and establish its own winery. Winemaker Paul Dobbs looks to make wine highlighting the terroir ot the Judean Hills with. His Metzuda Chardonnay has Rich aromas of lemon peel with delicate caramel and vanilla presence on the nose. Full and fresh on the palate, with a long impressive finish.

The Ghostwriter is about Santa Cruz and it's many terroirs, old heritage vineyards, and the light, acid driven, pretty, perfumey style of wine that it is capable of. "Ghostwriter" is a way of saying that the wine and the winemaker are in a sense telling a story that is not entirely their own. The subjects of the story are the sites, the vines, and the vintage. The result of this quality winemaking is a very long and mineral driven "old world" style Chardonnay that has easy fruit and terrificallu balanced acidity.
The picturesque chateau was acquired by the Marquis de Jouennes in 1932, and is now run by his grandchildren Amaury and Aurore Devillard. Their Mercurey Blanc has a delicate nose that develops citrus aromas with lime and mineral notes. On the palatte this is a fresh and elegant wine with fruity aromas, white peach and notes of fresh herbs.

Independent vigneron Clotilde Davenne built her 8.5-hectare domaine in the Yonne, parcel by parcel over the last nine years. Her dream has always been to be "hands on", on all aspects of the production, and as a grower she is now fully integrated into the life of each of her wines, from bud break to bottle. Her premier cru Chablis is full of white flowers and stone fruit with a beautiful finish of flinty minerality.
Winemaker Brian Carver and his wife Clare named their farm and winery after their goal to provide a gracious and welcoming table for their friends and family, with a cornucopia of hand-crafted food and wine. Antoine Vincent, the head winemaker, is the fifth generation of his family to oversee the domaine. With a philosophy to focus on terroir-driven wines, the Le Clos does not disappoint. It is extraordinarily rich with layer upon layer of ripe apple, pear, and spice. The finish is driven by minerality with a firm gripping acidity.
The Chavy family has had roots in Puligny for almost 200 years. In 1976, after years of selling grapes to négociants, they began to bottle wine under their own label. In 2003, after a family dispute the holdings were split up and Alain Chavy now runs the tiny Chavy Martin estate in Puligny-Montrachet. His winemaking is hands off, and a low percentage of new oak allows the terroir to shine through in these pure, elegant wines. Dry, balanced, with a kiss of oak.
Headed by 1997 French winemaker of the year Nadine Gublin, Domaine Jacques Prieur produces some of the best wines in Burgundy. Their Meursault 1er Cru Santenots has an attention-grabbing bouquet of stone and citrus fruit, wild flowers, and a touch of anise. The palate is well balanced with a rich, quite powerful opening. Packed with flavor, which is the the character of the vineyard, this wine's long finish is present with minerality and salinity lingering quite enjoyably.
Butcher turned vigneron at the age of 30, Pascal Janvier was destined to make wine. Today, Pascal and his wife Dominique farm a total of nine hectares in the most northerly land coldestof the regions of the Loire. In 2002, American winemaker Peter Hahn, purchased Clos de la Meslerie and immediately began converting the winery to organic production. The first vintage of the new organic Clos de la Meslerie was 2008. His second vintage in 2009 is terrific. Secastilla is a small treasure that was discovered at the end of the twentieth century; a beautiful valley in the high area of Somontano. Entirely by chance, the Viñas del Vero team came across 100-year-old Garnacha vines, sharing their space with almond and olive trees. For 35 years, Jean-Pierre Boyer directed the beautiful 120-acre estate before handing over the reins to his son Nicolas at the turn of the millennium. Their rose has pungent red berry and blood orange aromas that are lifted by a minerally quality that gains power with air. Taut and chewy on the palate, offering tart cherry and citrus flavors and a touch of herbaceousness. Closes smooth and broad, with good length and a repeating red fruit note.
The Flam Winery was founded in 1998 with the intent of producing french varietals and styled wines in Israel. In 2010, Flam decided to convert their boutique "French" winery into a Kosher winery. Their rose made from 100% Cabernet Franc grown in the Judean Hills of Israel is a testament to their hard work and quality. Muga makes one of the most distinctively delicious rosados in Rioja, indeed in all of Spain. It is a style referred to locally as "clarete", which is a lighter type of rosé made by combining white wine with direct press rosé, as opposed to the saignee method where color is derived from a pre-fermentation maceration on the skins of the grapes. Unlike 99.9% of other rosé wines, this one also sees a brief period of time in used oak barrels. The wine is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura, and shows very precise, tangy small red berry fruits, as well as some citric and apricot notes from the white wine component. This is a crisp, bracing, and unbeatable rosé for anyone who appreciates a dry style.

Made from a single 13 hectare estate covering some of the best terroir in Fleurie this is one of the finest Cru's in the region. Vivid ruby-red. Shows excellent clarity and energy and silky tannins on the persistent finish.

This is the winery's most important wine, produced with 100% Cabernet Franc, and dedicated by winemakers Marilisa and Franco Allegrini to their late brother Walter. Its richness is evident at first sight, confirmed on the nose by perfectly interwoven aromas of black berried fruit, pepper, and balsamic with hints of eucalyptus. The palate astonishes for its ability to sustain this imposing structure with a light tautness, making it both powerful and agile.
Maxime Graillot, son of famed Crozes-Hermitage pioneer Alain Graillot, began making very small quantities of Crozes- Hermitage with the 2004 vintage. Maxime is a very focused winemaker, producing artisanal wines with maximal varietal and terroir expression. The vineyards are close in proximity to his father's, so they have the same exposure, elevation, and density. His Crozes-Hermitage is a bright, sappy, juicy, red fruited wine with a driving, rocky twist, and terrific spice.

If there is such a thing as "subtlety" in Cornas, it is found here. An intricate wine with mineral-inflected character and ripeness lurking underneath. A great funk rules above all in this vintage.
Grown on ludicrously steep slopes, actually pictured on its label, are grapes that form a savory, classic peppery wine. Of course olives, and some seriously meaty chew. A salt of the earth power-house. For lovers of Côte Rôtie, a treat.
We can call this "fresh" or "bright" for Cornas, but we'd be dumbing it down. So generous on the palate, but it's the nose you'll keep talking about. "We could smell this for hours" we said and did.
Stéphan is of the naturalist camp who believes sulphur drastically interferes with fruit authenticity and purity. He seeks wines with fruit and maximum freshness. It goes without saying that he also does not add yeasts and refuses to chaptalize. There is lots of minerality here and the palate is pure Syrah: pepper (white and black), earth, red and black berries.

Friedrich Becker broke with tradition as a young man and stopped selling grapes to the local co-operative and started bottling his own wines. His estate is located in Schweigen, very far south of the Pfalz on the border of Alsace.Since 1989, he has been considered one of the top red wine producers in the Pfalz region of Germany. His Pinot Noir is rich and round on the palate, with lush fruit, hints of smoke, cinnamon, and vanilla.
Winemaker Denis Jamain has two passions vines and trees. The vineyard is his essential occupation, but he also manages a family forest, one of the most beautiful forests of Central France. There, he sources the oak for barrels he uses at the vineyard for this wine. Intensely aromatic with flavors of strawberry, cherry, and cassis that deepen on the palate with earthy tones, spice, and dried herbs lead this wine to a lovely finish with soft and refreshing tannins.
Forge Cellars is the brilliant creation of Louis Barruol of Chateau Saint Cosme in Gigondas, Justin Boyette of Hector Wine Company, and Rick Rainey; three winemakers who teamed up without a vineyard or a winery with the goal of making great wine. Buying grapes and utilizing space at the Hector Wine Company the team has been able to produce some of the best wine in the region. Their Pinot Noir has beautiful red fruit and earthen notes reminiscent of the velvetty wines of Volnay in Burgundy. Additional notes of violet, spice, and minerality round out this special wine.
Karl Fritsch believes that quality originates in the vineyard. His "P" Pinot Noir is very subtle but ultimately seductive wild cherry notes captivate on the nose. The body is luscious, rounded, generous and inviting, without an ounce of fat. There are hints of clove and anise, a deep, mellow cherry core and haunting floral hints. This wine is a nod to Pinot connoisseurs, but with a global appeal.

This Pinot Noir has bright fruit notes and fresh cinnamon spice on the nose which continues on the palate with soft well integrated tannins. Marsannay is just south of Dijon, making it the northern outpost of the Cote de Nuits; the region, therefore, has one of the coolest climates in France for a red wine.
Claude de Nicolay's ultra-natural, exquisitely balanced Corton from her best parcel. No new oak, no manipulation. An amazing Asian spice nose and lasting, clearly delineated flavors.
A wine that screams of it's terroir Grapes harvested from 50-60 year old vines, and made by one the most under radar producers in Burgundy. Wild berries, currant, plum, violet, and earthen aromas erupt from the glass with an intoxicating bouquet. Supple and very round mouth feel with a taut muscularity on the complex, lingering and utterly delicious finish where a touch of wood surfaces to round out the phenomenal wine.
The brothers Humbert, in Gevrey-Chambertin, are creating wines that reflect an old-school, uncompromising style of Burgundian winemaking that has fallen by the wayside. Their holdings in the north, close to Brochon contains some of the oldest vines planted on roche mère (mother rock). Look for currant, red cherry, and licorice notes among the dried earth and smoke. The palate is muscular for Burgundy, but continues to show refinement and polish on a finish that seems to last for days.
The only domaine to own vineyards in five of the region's most famous Grand Crus: Le Montrachet, Le Corton, Les Echézeaux, Le Musigny and Le Chambertin. Their Volnay Santenots is perfumed with deep red-berried fruit, violets, spice, and warm earth scents giving way to a to seductively textured and attractively energetic wine. Rich fruit, with lighter notes of wet leather, earth, cocoa, and anise glide to a phenominal finish with lush and elegant tannins.
Grenache, Carignan, Mourvedre & Rhône Blends
The Dupond family have a long history in wine making not just in the Rhone Valley but also in Burgundy. In fact, their winemaking roots go back five generations to the 1860s. In 1880 Joanny Dupond established the La Renjardière vineyard, which is situated in the area just north of Chateauneuf du Pape. Their "La Renjardière" is deliciously balanced with an intense nose of rosemary and thyme that comes with a scent of violets. The wine has a long juicy finish of fresh plums and dried cranberries with a smoky taste and black pepper.
Allobroges was named for the pre-Roman viticultaralists in the Rhone Valley, and this Grenache/ Syrah/ Mourvedre really evokes how wonderful the terroir of Washington State is. The Gilbert family have been farmers in the region since 1897 and have been making wine for ten years now. On the palate, the Allobroges presents freshness, balance, and a plush sense of enjoyment.
Prompted by a concern for sustainable development in the 1980's, the Chaudiere family has been fiersly dedicated to the sustainable development of their vineyards. Their "Quintessence" is an old vine blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache. Aromas of spice, violet, and leather continue to the palate with lush fruit, velvetty tannins, and a rich smokey finish.
There is a sense of focus and implicity at Domaine du Cayron. "I make one wine", says Michel Faraud. There are no cuvees, reserves, no declassified Cotes du Rhone, only Gigondas. Happily, Faraud's years of conservatism have paid off. His wine is one of the most loved Gigondas on the market. His 2012 vintage shows a classic perfume of basil, wild herbs, sweet dark fruits and mint. The notes carry to the palatte with leather and earthen tones, lush tannins, and a finish that never seems to end.
100% Garnacha vinified with a clarity, precision, and feminine grace. The wine sees 12 months in only 20% new French wood, so the flavors are pure and vibrant with intense, spicy fruit.
Totally old-school, unfined, unfiltered, with old wood (first used for beer-aging in Alsace) and no de-stemming: an aromatic, spicey Chateauneuf-Du-Pape with no modern flash, just well textured traditional juice, opening slowly but oh so worth it in the end.
A third selection from one of our favorite wine producers, Vall Llach. Ancient Carignan vines are carefully selected from vineyards which are over a hundred years old and then blended with old vine Grenache grapes. These vines are from a different era and truly define the personality of the wine. On the palate this wine is Dark, dense with rich intensity and ripe flavors of blackberry, cassis, and chocolate. Firm tannins and integrated acidity also help to define this wine amazingly deep wine, ready to drink now or ten years from now.
Winemaking, from one of the best producers in the Rhone. There are no secrets here, simply old vines, very low yields and minimal winemaking intervention create this phenomenal wine. A seductive bouquet of raspberry and cherry preserves, dried herbs, fresh lavender, and light leather notes give way to deep fruit and lush tannins with a finish that lingers seemingly forever.
Produced from estate old-vine fruit consisting of 65% Carinena, 20% Merlot, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine was aged for 16 months in new French oak. Built to be enjoyed decades after it was bottled; the fruit here is the star on both the nose and palate. On the palate, specifically, there is an eruption of coffee, peanut brittle, chocolate, and vanilla!
Bordeaux & Blends
Made by our friend Michelle D'Aprix, the only female American winemaker in Bordeaux, which is one of many things makes this wine special. Limestone & Montmorillonite clay make up the unique soil of this 75% Merlot - 25% Cab Franc blend. Well textured, with lush dark fruit, spice and chocolate notes, and well-defined tannins make this wine a favorite of ours all year round.
From the town of Bordeaux itself in the Pessac-Leognan appellation within Graves. Château Haut Brion neighbors this estate, and that similar cedary, dusty, terroir signature shines through here. An under-the-radar, classic, delicious claret.
Fans of Cru Bourgoies Pauillac anyone? Pibran's second label is a value of values, with neighbors like Mouton-Rothschild & Lynch-Bages. Only 17 hectares of vines here, tended to with care, especially since '87 with improved drainage. The result is brawny steak-wine with tobacco undertones and tannins that rule with an iron grip.
The Rabiller family has a long tradition of growing grapes in Saint Estephe. Dany and René Rabiller, the current proprietors, recognized the potential of their vineyards and since 1994, they have vinified and bottled their own wine. Cabernet Sauvignon makes up the majority of the blend (50%) followed by Merlot (40%), Petit Verdot (5%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). The nose shows pencil shavings, forest floor aromas and a core of black cherry and anise. Medium bodied, the palate is smooth and rounded and finishes with fine, fully developed tannins.
Bernard Beauregard founded in 1677, making it one of the older estates in the Pomerol appellation. Their 2011 vintage is a blend of 93% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Cabernet Franc. The wine is big and bold with rich, layered notes of plum, cherry, cocao, tobacco, and spice.
Created by Henri Martin and the only one of its kind as this 50-hectare vineyard was put together piece-by-piece over a number of years, through the purchase of plots exclusively from grands crus classified in 1855. His 2010 vintage has ample ripe blackberry, chocolate, spice and espresso. The blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot is ready to enjoy now. and also has the depth and structure to improve for years to come.
Overture is the second wine of Opus One, the cult wine famous for its origins as the collaboration between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Aged in French oak, Overture is composed of the same five varietals that define Opus One: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec, including some juice held back from earlier vintages-hence the lack of a vintage designation on the label. The nose shows sweet vanilla, black cherry and cassis with hints of tobacco. The acid and oak create a lively mouth feel that gives way to a velvety texture that is quite indicative of the Opus One brand.
The pièce de résistance! This newest released vintage is 79%Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, 6% Merlot, and 2% Malbec. The wine effuses dark fruit aromas accentuated by subtler notes of forest-floor and graphite. The wine's round mouthfeel and satiny tannins wrap around classic flavors of cassis, blackberry and black cherry. This refined and age-worthy wine offers lively acidity and a sturdy structure with a long lingering finish.
From the highest plots in Ribera and aged in French and American oak barrels comes 100% Tinto Fino; full of intense concentrated black cherries and figs; amazing structure and a super-long finish.

A rich, powerful, strong fruited Tempranillo blend named after the Berones people who inhabited the land in the third century BC!! Will surely satisfy new World palates looking for fruit and some oak, but it certainly still tastes like Rioja.
A cult status, ultra-traditional estate making wine in an almost baroque style. Warmly spicy with strong old barrel influence, dried fruit all over and astonishing complexity.
Alvaro Palacios, the 2008 Spanish winemaker of the year, oversees all wine production at Palacios Remondo. Alvaro's passion for staying true to the tradition of the land inspires him to make wines that are expressive and authentic to the Eastern Rioja region. Alvaro Palacios describes the 2011 La Montesa as 'a wine that flows velvety smooth,' with 'harmonious notes of orange rind, fresh cherries and rosemary petals that culminate in a long and evocative finish.'
One of the star producers in Rioja is a relatively new one. Remírez de Ganuza have only been going since 1989 but they are already among one of the most celebrated of all producers in the region. Remírez de Ganuza have produced a quite sublime old vine Tempranillo blend from the famed Rioja. An extroverted wine to decant, then savor slowly.
What happens when DOCG commission does not approve a wine for the name given by the winemaker? A new Italian Law prohibits winemakers from listing more than one vineyard on a bottle of Barolo, and this Barolo is a cuvee of nebbiolo from three vineyards. So instead of labeling this cuvee, the Borgogno family decided that this wine would be 'No Name.' It is nevertheless a beautiful, mid-weight wine laced with attractive red fruit, flowers, licorice and tobacco.
Cascina Luisin was founded in 1913 by Luigi Minuto, great-grandfather of the current owner Roberto Minuto. The wine estate has always been owned and run by the family, with the aim of guaranteeing meticulous control over all stages of winemaking: from accurate and rigorous care of the vineyards and attentive work in the cellar, to marketing and public relation duties. This wine is known for its great elegance and austerity of classic Nebbiolo displaying delicate fruit and age worthy tannins.
The estate of G.D. Vajra, situated in Vergne the highest village in the Commune of Barolo, was established in 1972 by Giuseppe Domenico, and is now run by Milena and Aldo Vajra. Vajra currently owns 40 sustainably farmed hectares in such strategic spots as Bricco delle Viole, Fossati, La Volta, and Coste di Vergne. Freshly cut flowers, mint and sweet spices add lift, but ultimately the 2010 is a dark, brooding Barolo with sweet, rich and ripe fruit. Everything managed to stay in check and in near-perfect balance, and the tannins will allow this vintage to age for years to come.

If you've never tried a true Sherry-type wine before, this is a "safe space" to try one. The Fino and Amontillado are great as dry appetizer wines and with cheese. Greece's beloved Agioritiko grape is famed for its rich velvety red wines, and has been a favorite there since at least 800BC when the Greek poet Homer sung its praises. Winemaker Kostas Mitravelas uses his finest 20-year old Agioritiko vines for this wine and uses no oak for maturation, he lets the grape flavours speak for themselves. A vibrant wine with with cherry, plum, and redcurrant notes that has great depth and soft, rounded tannins.
The Prieler family has been cultivating their families land for over 150 years, and has been dedicated to their vineyards for over 35 years. Today the vineyard is run by Engelbert and Irmgard and their children Georg and Silvia. Their Blaufrankisch is seductive with black cherry and blackberry on the nose with plenty of red berries and spice on the palate.
St. Laurent is a red-wine grape believed to have arisen in Bordeaux, but which migrated through Alsace and Germany to centeral Europe, its current home. St. Laurent is said to be a hard grape to grow, just like its relative Pinot Noir. In fact, it is only grown on some 800 hectares in all of Austria but it is a true gem. This St. Laurent is made from 50 year old vines. It is an elegant full bodied and soft tannined wine with dark berry notes, bitter chocolate, dried herbs, roasted coffee roast, and vanilla.
A lot can be said about Musar and the philosophies behind it… too much to cover here. Suffice it to say, these wines enjoy quite a cult following. The wines differ vintage to vintage and often bottle to bottle, plus they're usually pricey. The Hochar, their incredible value, is proof that a wine can be big, round, multifaceted, paired with steak, with no oak in sight. Drink a piece of history and break new ground.
The Flam winery was established in 1998 by brothers Golan and Gilad Flam, and their mother Kami, with the vision of producing wine at the highest international quality. Their father Israel Flam was chief winemaker for many years at one of Israel's leading wineries, and is regarded by many as the pioneer of Israeli modern winemaking. Their 2013 Classico Bordeaux blend is lush with layers of herbs and ripe fruit, complex notes of spice, and fisihes with notes of vanilla and cacao nib.
