Tambo Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
I take my mother to dinner about once per week, somewhere in Oakland. We have tried dozens of restaurants throughout the city, and we enjoyed this as much or more than anywhere else. The Peruvian food was creative, different, and exciting. We liked everything (save room for desert). The noise level was perfect (Sunday evening), and our waiter was friendly, attentive and prompt. The wine list was not long, but really fun to explore. It was a relaxed, comfortable and pleasant experience; the kind worth repeating regularly.
The ceviche combo was outstanding, the perfect blend of flavors, the salmon with quinoa also very good and our server Natalie was knowledgeable and efficient. My husband really enjoyed the passion fruit sangria and sweet potato fries. The location of the restaurant is questionable sivgobearly and park close.
I was wary when I first discovered this restaurant given the location (which isn't bad, but not in one of Oakland's many hot spots) and lack of reviews. But my wife and I enjoyed the experience from beginning to end. The food was delicious, authentic, portioned and priced well, and presented exquisitely. Ricardo was our server, bartender and may be owner or part owner as far as we could tell. He was amazing and made us comfortable and made excellent recommendations due to our relative unfamiliarity with Peruvian cuisine. We *will* be back.
Give it a try!
Tambo was really good. The Ceviche Sampler made me want more, the empanadas were excellent and all were happy with our entrees as well. Great service! Cordial, efficient and quick. Funky neighborhood....not in the cool James Brown kinda way, but improving. I would definitely return for an authentic and well presented Peruvian meal at a good price!
This is the second time we have eaten at Tambo - and we would definitely return again. The cerviches and empanadas are exceptional.
The entree's are OK - we had the chicken, paella and a flank steak. Next time we will try their quinoa salad topped with a protein. Service is terrific. The environment is casual. We did not have dessert but would love the flan to be put back on the menu.
Tambo is our favorite Alameda Cty Peruvian place. It is more upscale than the usual budget ethnic, so the ceviches - which are more like aguachiles (yes!) - have NO filler. That's right, none of those handfuls of cheap corn nuts and piles of raw onions that other places use! It's all about the fish, which is sustainable/local whenever possible. The empanadas are delightful but note they are small, meant strictly as a light starter. All four varieties are very good. Sometimes the kitchen gets carried away with their stir-fried sides, especially with the rib-eye. This is the 3x I've had this entree and the side was way overwrought this time, with at least nine different ingredients including capers and sunflower seeds. When they keep it simple, the side is MUCH better. Don't miss dessert, especially the panna cotta, which is light and delicate, a beautiful version. Service is good but stretches thin at peak times, so be patient when the DR is full. These are good people and they work hard, the owner is a Master Chef at ceviche so they are perfectly balanced here!
Was looking for good, unique food before a concert at the Fox Theater. This was in the neighborhood and we easily found parking right in front. Nice atmosphere, some interesting native art. Service was very good. Enjoyed the ceviche sampler, all of which was fresh & delicious. The empanadas were also tasty. The Ensalada Limena (added steak) was also very yummy. Portions were a little on the light side. Price was what I expected for a Peruvian restaurant, a little on the $$$ side. Would return and recommend it.
This restaurant was not crowded so the single server could easily handle all diners and still take time to answer questions and make recommendations with a cheerful disposition. We had the ceviche sampler platter and the empanada sampler platter with plantains and sangria and it was a wonderful meal.
The BEST Peruvian in the EBay! If you're accustomed to cheapo Peruvian stuffed with the usual filler of corn nuts, hominy and piles of raw onions, you'll be pleasantly surprised by Tambo's creative, upscale take on Peruvian food. Just the fact they follow Monterey Bay Aquarium Watch List on seafood makes them deserving of support (wish more SFBA places would do this too). Nice empanadas, lovely ceviches. Note the fish ceviches are very, very lightly pickled: more raw than 'cooked'. We like it this way, the local bass ceviche that night was better than 98% of NorCA's sushi places; truly sweet and fresh, and a huge serving! Love the rib-eye but note sides change up constantly (same ingredients but combined differently every time). Leg of lamb dish is a classic rice/beans/meat stew, delicious. Don't miss dessert: Tambo takes the ordinary-sounding and executes with flair. Parking difficult in daytime (near the twin Federal bldgs); easier at night. Neighborhood gentrifying but still a little rough around the edges - just lock your car and walk with confidence; you'll be fine. Don't let it keep you from some of the best food in Oakland!
We had made a reservation for 6:45 pm. We arrived a few minutes early & there were no tables available for 3. We waited at the bar. They owned have a wine & beer license. It took 10 minutes for somebody to even acknowledge if we maybe wanted to order a drink. We lost our patience & walked out!
We came here on a whim since we were in the area and the Yelp reviews were good. Both my husband and I have had our fair share of Peruvian food in the Bay Area so we came in very knowledgeable about the food and expectations. We started with the Causitas which is a potato appetizer. For $18 we were expecting more than just 3 tiny lumps. One had a tiny lump of crab, one with 1 fried shrimp, and one with 2 tiny pieces of octopus. Not only was this dish ridiculously over priced for what it was, it was the most disappointing dish I ever had, not only by Peruvian food standards, but by general restaurant standards. We felt texture in our mouths, but there was 0% flavor. For our entrees, I ordered the Lomo Saltado, which is my go to when I go to a Peruvian restaurant for the first time. It was edible, but very salty. I had to put my whole bowl of rice in the dish to blend with the sauce and tone down the saltiness. My husband got the quinoa dish which he was pleasantly pleased with, but not anything special. For drinks I ordered a passion fruit/strawberry vermouth cocktail that was $8. Tasted delicious, but felt like I paid $8 for a martini glass of juice rather than a cocktail and my husband ordered a Racer 5 for $6 which was a decent price for what it was. The server was adequate. Overall, we wouldn't come back to this place and wouldn't recommend it to anyone else.
Ive be been to Tambo's 2x this week. The 1st visit was so awesome, I brought out of town guests the 2nd time. My gosh what a find if you love cerviche and good South American food and wines. The owner's a gem and will most likely come to your table and see how the food and service are. My new #1 favorite place to eat. Try it you'll love it but don't tell too many peeps
It was my birthday: all I wanted food that was authentic and satisfying. Score! They may need more servers? Other than that the food was well worth the wait when it was ordered. Salmon cooked to perfection unlike anything I've ever experienced. Also, the temperature for everything was perfect on every level. Taste more than satisfactory, we are definitely going again with family and friends.
This is a wonderful as yet undiscovered (judged from the empty tables) restaurant in downtown Oakland. The food is solid -- particularly the Ceviche, a good value for the price, nice simple decor, good service. Nothing fancy, but a good value. I will be back. Thanks.
