My husband and I went here to celebrate St. Patty’s day. We arrived earlier than our reservation so we headed to the bar for a drink and with 24+ people waiting at the bar to order , there were only 2 bartenders working. Next we were given a seating earlier than our reservation time which was great. Sarah, our waitress took our order but neglected to tell my husband who ordered a toad in the hole that his entree came with a salad so he might not want to order the wedge salad as a starter. His filet was as tough as shoeleather so it went into a take home container for the dog. I ordered the corn beef and cabbage. The corn beef was not seasoned and was sliced thinner than we were used to so it also went in the take home container. The brown anise tasting bread and white bread were both fresh and tasty. The carrots and potatoes were undercooked. Only the cabbage was tender but also tasteless. Needless to say we will not be back.
It was St. Patrick’s Day and what better place to celebrate...we thought. Website said live music and Celtic dancers- well, there was a tent in the parking lot and a line down the street.
We thought entertainment would be inside the restaurant along with a Lawry’s dinner.
It’s a holiday I get it- crazy, and our expectations were fairly low because it was a holiday. The food was horrible. The was no entertaining for diners spending $$ I felt bad for the staff who were trying so hard.
It’s a landmark kind of place- no need to ever return
The 1st time we went to Tam O'Shanter it was a regular non-holiday dinner and everything was great, the menu was varied, service was wonderful, the atmosphere was relaxing. The only negative was there was no parking. Last St Patrick's Day we attempted to get a dinner reservation, but they were booked up. We stopped at the festivities at the back, but it was crowded, congested, long lines for everything so we left. This year we made a dinner reservation well in advanced. It took an eternity to find parking. Our server was friendly & helpful, but it was not the best dining experience. The menu was edited for the holiday, and my favorite items were not listed. The dinner I received was not great. Little things like water re-fills did not happen due to the crowdedness. Also, it was about a 20 minute wait to use the restroom, also due to the holiday crowd. I would highly recommend Tam O'Shanter...on a NON-HOLIDAY!
Parking was a pain (St Patrick Day non dining event was going on), but otherwise a great experience.
We always love a visit to the Tam! Especially on St. Patrick's Day or Christmas time!! Food has improved over the years as well!
We went to the Tam O'Shanter, normally a Scottish-themed restaurant, for St. Patrick's Day. The food, as always, was good, and the service was excellent. The live bands are among the best Irish groups in Southern California. My only complaint is the $5 per person cover charge. I can understand a cover charge for those who were just there for the music, but we had dinner reservations. I think it would be reasonable to set aside a cover charge for those who are about to spend $70 to $100 for dinner. One other slight problem. The tent where the bands play is standing-room only. When you're in your 70s but still want to hear the music, standing for an hour is problematic. It would be nice if there were a way to include seats in the tent.
Love visiting this L.A. legend. I'm always so happy to see that it is still around. Although it is owned by Lawry's, we enjoy visiting The Tam O'Shanter more because of the authentic, old time feel. The food is great and so are the drinks. The service is always great too! Please never close!
Tam O’Shanter is a great prime rib restaurant, with other good food options on its menu. Also great bar area with solid pub food offerings and evening music sessions. A neighborhood institution.
We celebrate our anniversary there every year! There was a time when the staff saw our kids grow!
We've eaten dinner here many times over the years and the food is consistently very good. This is not innovative cuisine, but the specialty is prime rib and the various meat and fish dishes are done very well. The food can be a little rich depending on what you order, and we frequently take some home. They have an excellent chocolate souffle for dessert. Excellent service generally. Being a historic restaurant founded in 1922 adds to the atmosphere.
The food is excellent. We did the prime rib and salad. The service is top notch and the atmosphere is great for a date.
As expected the food was very good. Service was great... Sarah and her colleagues were very attentive. Thank you.
The hostesses could be a bit more pleasant on the phone.
Being a Lawry’s member is the Best! We love the restaurant. It offers a carvery side for less formal and first come first served walk-ins, or a fancier selection of rooms to enjoy special events (reservations required). We do both and love them equally. Looking forward to going back soon!
Things started out great. They acknowledged our reservation and we were seated right away. The waiter showed up and took our drink order. Still good to go. He eventually took our dinner order and things started downhill fast. It wasn't that he was a horrible waiter, things just took forever and he rarely stopped by. After the dinner was cleared we must have waited 20 minutes for him to stop by and check on dessert. I think we eventually flagged him down. The whole process took about 3 hours. Tables around us that were seated after us were leaving ahead of us. One of those nights everyone has had at some point.
The food is not great but it is also not my particular taste so I hesitate to say it was bad. it just generally looked unappetizing. I read similar reviews before going but had to experience a place with so much history for myself. Hope this helps.
Thank you for giving my brother his birthday cupcake! Truly appreciate it. Food is always good. New construction should be a good addition.
As good as ever, and it's been around a long time. Prime rib is excellent as are potatoes and yorkshire pudding. The sticky pudding was ok but not great.
Wonderful unique place with consistent food and outstanding service. An old favorite that never disappoints. They honored my Open Table reservation, and although a dozen or so people were waiting, I was seated almost immediately. I'll go back just because of that
Prime rib great
when will you have my favorite fish branzino ?
We took my wife on a Scavenger Hunt of all things Walt Disney in Los Angeles. We planned it weeks in advance and called 3 times to make reservations and request Table 31- Walt's Table. When we arrived the restaurant was quiet and there was just one other table seated - Table 31. They told us that they never promise that table as you don't know who will walk in and request it. They even told us the group seated had requested it.
They sat us at another table - and the waitress was told it was my birthday and if possible we would like to know any Disney stories and to take pictures at the table once the couple left. Once she left - the couple told us they had no idea it was a Disney table and had not requested it.
The waitress over the course of the evening showed several people around the restaurant pointing out Walt info - but not a word to us. She also never told us the specials except to say well you should have ordered the special, and she mixed up our drinks and when it was noticed she just switched them between us.
The food is creative - and was well prepared. The atmosphere is very period and appreciated. But the manager, hostess and server were all really put out that we would come to this place to look for Walt history - and made my wife feel like here excitement for the birthday scavenger hunt was not welcome.
I am not sure where I stand on recommending it to others.
Service, food and drinks were excellent. However, the menu is limited and expensive. Overall a good dining but expensive dining experience.
Food is very good as expected. The charm of the facility and furniture is what makes Tam O'Shanter unique but the furniture is really getting past the charm stage. I have been going to there for decades. My guests were first timers and complemented the food and quietness of the place.
I am a VIP member and my guest paid for the dinner. I did not have my card with me but should I have gotten credit for this?
My wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary. We were seated next to a table with lots of kids. We actually left our kids at home just to have a nice and quiet date. We asked to be reseated, and they were willing to do so and we had a pleasant dinner after all. The food was very good and the service was too. Thanks for helping us celebrate 16 years.
This is a copy of my YELP review - Went for Sunday Brunch - hours listed are deceiving - Open Table says - 10:30 - 2:30 - Tam Web site says - 11:00 - 2:30. 3 of us arrived at 1:40 and were told we couldn't be seated until all of our party arrived. The (rude) hostess also said the kitchen closes at 2 and if others hadn't arrived by then - they could only order sandwiches from the carving board - Obviously couldn't care less if we ate there or not! I DID advise the hostess that the Web site said Brunch hours ended at 2:30 and corrective action should be taken so other diners aren't misled - at 1:45 a male host asked if he could help (he was putting up a sign saying the dining room was closed) I explained the situation - he went to check and did let the 3 of us into the dining room. Again he said the kitchen closed at 2PM. Our other 2 guests arrived at 1:50 and we let them know that they had to order immediately.
The food was very good - our server was Sarah B. and was outstanding. We have always enjoyed evening dinners at the Tam and also a few pre-Greek Theater meals. Today was to be a celebration of a couples engagement and a cancer-free diagnosis for a dear friend.
Not sure IF or how soon we will return
The service was very professional, our waitress, the food, the ambiance made our experience a true pleasure. My wife and I look forward to returning soon for our next family celebration.
Have eaten here several times. The last couple of times, I thought quality had dropped. This time the prime rib was excellent.
First time dining there, though I remember seeing as a kid riding in the car with my dad in the 1950s and 60s. Only regret is waiting so long. I had the spectacular turkey cobb. Wife loved the just right French onion soup - not too thick, not too salty, right amount of cheese. Friend had a prime rib plate. We shared mac and cheese and two unique desserts, the sticky toffee pudding and round carrot cake. Service cheery and knowledgeable.
I'm a VIP member, but I hadn't been to the Tam in quite a while. I was arranging to meet an out-of-town colleague who'd never been but had heard about it for years. My reservation was made via Opentable, and all the notations I made online were noted and granted upon check-in(not always the case using that app with other restaurants)! We were very pleased, as everyone's service was top-notch. Food perfect! Couldn't be happier.
As always, the meals were excellent--from burgers to prime rib and fish-n-chips. Service was superb.
I grew up in Atwater all my life and never the experience of dining here. I was very pleased with the service, food and overall ambiance. The prime rib was DELICIOUS! We can’t wait to come back.
Subpar service. Busy night. Server was inattentive. Did not want to provide coffee and tea refills. “Forgot” to put in our order for chocolate soufflé. Finally came out when we requested the check. We were tired of sitting around waiting for dessert when we ordered it at the beginning of dinner with our drinks.
I came with my boyfriend and his family for his father’s birthday. We were all very satisfied with our food and service. We would definitely come back and recommend to others.
The environment is very relaxing and the prime ribs is cooked at the optimum point, not too rare or over cooked.
Went there for my wife's birthday and they treated us like royalty. The are always great. Food was fantastic. The service was great too. We been going there for 50 years and never been disappointed.
The food was a bit cold when we were served. Otherwise there was no real problem with our visit just slightly underwhelming this time.
We went with our son and daughter in law to celebrate our anniversary. We were able to sit at the table Walt Disney frequented during his life. The waiter was wonderful, and the food was great. We got complimentary desserts for our anniversary and our son's birthday. Fun place!
Wifey and I took a couple from the UK to dinner, who remarked at how very UK the menu was. they loved the beef and horseradish as wonderfully authentic and delightful. The experience was memorable.
We are big fans of prime rib and love Lawrys restaurants. We have been here before and have had a good meal. This visit surely missed the mark. We ate on Monday night, and it was very busy. It took 1/2 hour to seat us, with our reservation. Our waitress came over and was very nice. She took our order and drinks arrived. It was down hill from there! The prime rib was very tough--we had to cut my mother-in-laws food as it was so difficult for her to eat (she ended up not eating). It was not acceptable--but we never saw the waitress again to return or comment. We were unable to order more beverages. We had not ordered appetizers, anticipating we would get dessert. We waited and waited after we ate our entress(those of us who could) and finally asked the young man serving water to bring us dessert menus---20 minutes later--as no one acknowledged us sitting there with our dessert menus--we asked the same water server to get our check--even that took time to take care of!!! We arrived at 7pm--and left at 9:15--only having an entrée and drinks. This was a terrible experience as we hoped to celebrate a birthday with desserts. Food and service were both terrible. It was not acceptable. We will not be back.
My husband has worked for The Walt Disney Company for over 30 years, and since this was a favorite hangout for Mr Disney and his creative team, we love the history attached to Tam O’Shanter. The food never disappoints, either...especially the prime rib! We absolutely love this place and we always recommend it highly!
Tam O'Shanter is one of our favorite restaurants, especially for special occasions.
