Takeda Thai by Moulay Ratings and Reviews
Glad we returned. Still the best Thai option in Scottsdale. We traveled 35 minutes to get there and it was worth it. Small, dimly lit and nicely decorated makes it a great 'date' spot . We had the Hot and Sour (Thom Ghai?) soup. Excellent. I had Green Curry and hubby had the red. Great flavor just wished it was hotter (more spice). Good pours for cocktails. We'll return sooner next time.
This is one of our top 10 go-to restaurants in the valley and I should have reviewed it long ago. You can be sure that whatever you order - it will be great! From the simplest appetizer, spicy Wok Charred Edemame to any entree. Chef Moulay serves up delicious Thai food! My favorite - Chicken Green Curry with Forbidden Rice. Hubby's - Beef Panang. Two more favorite appetizers - Coconut Shrimp, Roti Canal. Soups are wonderful as is coconut ice cream. Sometimes service is a little slow, but it's worth the wait!
The service was slow, food salty and staff made multiple mistakes with respect to our order. Pricing is too high and they charge an automatic gratuity of 20% for 5 or more... if a restaurant does that then they need to provide 20% type service. I would not return nor recommend this to anyone.
We try many Thai restaurants all over the Phoenix/Scottsdale area, but always come back to Takeda. Our out of town guests are always surprised when we take them to such an unassuming location, but once they try the Spicy edamame or charred veggies, they can't wait to come back! It has such a warm and friendly feel and we are so lucky to live close by.
We cannot comment on the food quality because we were never served. After being at our table for over an hour and inquiring about our food a number of times, we were eventually told our order was never put in. Although the food can be good here, this is our third experience with poor service...the restaurant is simply understaffed.
The trifecta: horrible service, food, and value. We were greeted by a grumpy woman who refused to let us choose another two-top table, despite the restaurant being empty and we had a reservation. Then we were given a "Valentine's Day Menu," which was the exact same food, but with an up charge on every item. Nothing special, no new ambiance, no special food menu... just an opportunity to stick it to your customers. Our food was poor quality and small portions. The pad thai was greasy and had no flavor. When I asked for curry with veggies and shrimp, it ended up costing $8 more than the already inflated menu prices. That would be fine if I had been notified in advance; I just don't like the gouging. The red wine was served COLD, and when we asked about it, the owner said that's how they serve it, as if that a unique trick of theirs. I told her that red wine shouldn't be refrigerated, and she finally relented and said she'd open a new bottle... meaning that's NOT how they serve it, but just how they try to recycle old wine. Oops. Overall this place was extremely disappointing. I expressed my discontent when the check came and she mumbled something about taking off some charges, but returned with the same charges on our bill. Take your hard earned money and loyalty elsewhere.
Takeda Thai, our 1st visit,
⋅ Crab puffs
⋅ Roti Kanal
⋅ Larb (lettuce wraps)
The star entree was, hands down
✨Crispy Pla – Whole Tilapia Lightly breaded, w/ choice of garlic chili sauce or basil curry sauce
and 💥Sweet and Sour Beef
We highly recommend Takeda Thai
The word "mediocre" came up often during the dinner conversation. The spring role appetizers were crispy, but the fried oil over powered the flavorless cabbage filling. A sweet & sour dipping sauce reminiscent of budget Chinese take out didn't help. Our two entree plates were served cold without rice which was also cold when it arrived. The Pad Thai was one dimensional and very bland. The Thai Basil Chicken was supposedly spice level three, but neither heat or intense basil flavor made it to the fork. Dessert offerings were slim which seemed strange for such a high priced menu. My sister had two scoops of Cookies & Cream ice cream but was really looking for anything with chocolate.
Went here based on recommendations by other diners for Valentines Day dinner. They had a belly dancer (this is a Thai restaurant?) Food was OK but not the best Thai we've ever had. Service was very slow but friendly. They played loud music even when dancer wasn't performing making it nearly impossible to have a conversation. Tables were jammed together cheek-to-jowl. Not what I had in mind for a romantic Valentine dinner. To restaurant's credit they did send e-mail indicating they would have the belly dancer and limited menu. But figured it would have a Valentine theme. (NOT!) Otherwise, it is probably an OK neighborhood spot. Place was packed and those without reservations were turned away.
Valentine's menu was limited. However, their special dish of Mahi Mahi, shell fish muscles and Thai seasonings was excellent. It did take quite a while for the food to be served. Wine menu was also small. We enjoyed very much the belly dancing entertainment. Ava Fleming was wonderful. Ava's dancing and interaction with the customers was well received and welcomed by all. The owner, Sarah was very friendly and came to our table during dinner to ask about our meal and service. We had a good time and would go back again to try out their full menu of Thai food.
It would be worth your while to give Moulay's Takeda Thai a try to experience what I have been experiencing for the last 2 years. That is, the quality of the food, the preparation time that he puts into each dish on his menu. As for his staff serving the food, they are friendly, caring and experience providing a comfortable dining experience. Try it, you will not be disappointed.
I really liked the food at Takeda Thai. Staff was knowledgeable and helpful about explaining how the spicy-scaled worked. It was nice that the owner came out to visit every table and chat with us, even as they got busy. The interior was dark and fancy as well as the front entrance. It is a small place but great food and ambiance.
Takeda Thai matches its superb food with excellent service. There are very few options for good Thai food in town and this restaurant sits comfortably at the top. The Tom Yum Gai was a superb starter and the Thai Basil is definitely worth a return trip. The owners were around for dinner and I appreciated their taking the time to discuss other items on the menu. An added plus was the restaurant's wine selection.
