Taj of India Ratings and Reviews
The food was tasty and mild - just what we wanted! The price is about average for DC mid-tier restaurants. Ambience on a summer Friday night was cozy yet bustling. Service was very, very attentive despite how full the restaurant looked. Overall, great experience at a peak dining rush.
Nice atmosphere, easy to talk. Pleasant wait staff. Location convenient to Foggy Bottom Meyro. I love Indian food and have eaten at most of the local places. Food here is good and better than some Indian restaurants. But this time it was not as good as my previous visits. Tandoor salmon was dry and overcooked. Malai Kofta was dry and bland. Mango lassi too sweet and an artificial bright orange color. I have ordered all of these dishes here before and they were delicious, so maybe it was an off night (a Tuesday). On the other hand, chicken appetizer was huge -- enough for three people-- and tasty. Extras that are included at some restaurants (papadam, lemon pickle) cost extra here; after all, it is Georgetown.
Sat next to a family with two kids both crying the entire meal. No offense against families who bring their kids to meals, but let's just say the experience kind of ruined my meal.
Also, not really sure the restaurant knows how to handle a busy night. The service was terrible. Had to ask the waiter to take our order, to bring more water, bring the check...etc (all over two screaming kids).
Although the food was pretty standard (nothing exceptional) I may try it again on a less busy night. Not sure they can handle the pressure.
Well, the rice was really good. That's about the only positive thing I can say about this place. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala. It was so salty I could hardly taste the curry. Plus, the sauce was polluted with cilantro, which I can't stand. They have a full bar, but they don't know how to use it. I ordered a very commonplace cocktail. The waiter didn't know what I was talking about. I had to write it on his pad. What they brought me had been made with the right stuff, except that they watered it down considerably, which is a huge black mark in my book. Between this, the food, and the amateur service, there's no way I would go back.
The food here is delicious but more geared toward an American palette (mildly spiced). The only problem we encountered was with service. Our waiter insisted a member of our dining party take his tea after his meal since that's traditionally when it's drank; however my cousin wanted his tea immediately due to his sore throat but was not given it until after our appetizer and main course arrived. Additionally what was most upsetting was that our waiter threw away our leftovers (which was quite substantial) and did not seem to care that that happened. I may return if & when I do, I'd be more firm when dealing with the wait staff.
Great food but the manager was beyond rude. Made a reservation months in advance then altered it to less people the day before. The manager told us that we should've made a reservation months in advance condescendingly when we walked in, to which we responded that we did months in advance. He proceeded to argue with us, then eventually sat us. For the next 15 minutes, he spent time behind the bar talking rudely about how we didn't have a reservation and what not. Horrible management, but the food was good.
Food was so tasty! We had chicken tikka masala, saag paneer and aloo gobi which were fabulous, full of flavor. We were very disappointed in the tandoori lamb tho - grizzly and chewy and not very flavorful. On the upside, the naan and basmati were both excellent. I've had some really flat, damp naan and flavorless basmati at other local places so I was so happy to finally find good staples. Their saag paneer was honestly the best I've ever had - can't put my finger on what made it different but the spices were fabulous and it was packed generously with the paneer cubes too! Wait staff was very friendly and attentive as well. Lamb aside, a great place for Indian. We'll be back.
The food here is great and tastes like authentic Indian food. However, the atmosphere and environment is always too loud and hectic. They passed things over our heads like dirty plates and table papers and the owner seemed to be yelling across tables to tell the servers and hostess what to do. The food is good but you would be better off ordering it through grub hub and having it delivered to your house if you want to have a calm evening.
This is our first choice for Indian food - highly recommend the lamb curry and dahlia soup. We mainly come here for lunch and we ate dinner here a few times. The food & service is outstanding. We tried the lunch buffet today and there were mainly chicken entrees available, but it was still good.
Parking can be an issue, so be prepared to walk a few blocks away. We have never had a long wait, even without a reservation.
