Taj Cafe is a classic Indian restaurant. The interior of the dining room is designed to reflect the Indian culture. On the wall, Taj has hung numerous paintings that reflect India, from the Taj Majal to belly dancers to scenes of Indian farm life. Many guests worry that Indian food will be too spicy for them, but the kitchen staff at Taj is happy to accommodate any palate and make a dish as spicy or mild as it needs to be. The knowledgeable and friendly wait staff are equally good at communicating guest needs to the kitchen.
During the week, Taj offers a lunch buffet for guests. This buffet runs from 11:30pm to 3:00pm. After that, dinner service starts in earnest and guests can order off of Taj Cafe's menu. Signature dishes here include several tandoori options which are cooked in a clay oven, as well as multiple curry specialties.
I would highly recommend this restaurant for food lovers. Excellent menu with a wide variety of selections. Favorite dish of the evening was the lentil soup. Raj was an excellent host and took the time to cover items on the menu. Exceptional experience.
We took a group to Taj for lunch and we were very
Impressed with the level of service the food is great too!
Located conveniently in downtown Ventura, we have dined at The Taj Cafe numerous times and we enjoy their food, atmosphere, and service. We typically have had items off their "chef's specials" menu, such as the Kofta, Masala, and bbq meals and been satisfied each time. Each meal typically starts with some chutney, a cracker like bean/rice bread, and sometimes a potato latke of sorts. As well as naan during the meal. Their mango lassi is good and they have a refreshing ginger lemonade that has fiz and citrus flavors as well as good ginger flavor.
We have also had the lunch buffet here and they have a nice spread of entrees, appetizers, and dessert. You can sample across the menu and they serve naan as well.
We've always enjoyed the quirky service, they are attentive, and never had an issue. We've been to other Indian restaurants in the area and The Taj Cafe is our favorite with their thick and rich flavors.
I went with a large group and the owner didnt want to take separate checks as most restaurants do these days. He didn't quite know how to handle a group of 8. He would take to us as if we were family in a wayy I felt that we were being scolded by him. Non the less the food was good and just had to chalk it all up to an adventure. Even with his nephew running around wanting to sell you tickets on his toy train. Defiantly got that family owned feeling :)
The service was great, very friendly and they kept piling on more dishes that we had not even ordered, which became a problem because there was too much to eat. Everyone was happy with what they ordered, I don't get why the place was so quiet on a Sunday night - maybe because it was St. Patrick's everyone was out at the "Irish" "pubs".
overall very good with exceptional friendly service. Will go back and recommend it to friends
WOW!!! 1st time here and was OVERLY impressed!!! Owner took exceptional care of us...and didn't baulk when we showed our coupon! This is how business should be conducted....and we will visit again!!!
We were looking for a place to meet between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles and chose Taj Cafe. Great decision. The wait staff was friendly and the food was really terrific. I normally don't care much for Indian food, but everything was delicious. Highly recommended.
