Taberna Tapas Ratings and Reviews
The food was fine, the Paella was really good, the tapas were ok, no to much flavor, drinks ok, we asked tinto de verano , and the waitress did not know what we were talking about, we asked for a couple tapas that were in the menu that they did not have it at the moment, by the way the menu in the website is completely different that the one at the restaurant, they do not have what they offering at the website.
But the really bad issue was the awful service, I guess the waitress was in a bad mood and with a lack of knowledge about services, so bad, we already try this place and we are not coming back.
Nice meal in a nice restaurant in downtown Durham near the Carolina Theatre, the Convention Center, and the Marriott. We had lamb meatballs, skirt steak, and portabella mushrooms tapas, plus molten chocolate cake, which made for a small and tasty meal that was reasonably priced. Service was friendly and helpful, and the dishes were delivered quickly. We’re glad we went, I recommend it.
Taberna Tapas is a very energetic tapas restaurant in the heart of downtown Durham. Perfect for theater pre or post (need reservation though). Lots of great plates w a Spanish flair. Everything we have ever ordered has been tasty. Love the white anchovy especially, which is rare to find. You can't go wrong here if seeking tapas
The server (I think Amanda) was great! She asked early about our timing and kept an eye on the clock, which was perfect, as we were going to a concert which was 30 minutes away. Her food and drink recommendations were spot on, as well! We will definitely be back.
I love Taberna. Its far better than Mateo, the tapas bar just down the street. The meatballs in red sauce and skirt steak with chimmichurri are out of this world. I also love the mussels, the spicy shrimp and potato and ham croquettes. Ask for a table near the window for downtown durham people watching.
First of all we had a reservation for 9:00, we got there 5 mins early, and our table wasn’t ready yet. So we went to the bar for some drinks and waited.... 45 mins later we finally got a table!
What the heck is the point of a reservation if you don’t know how to make it work??? They couldn’t care less that we had plans and were waiting for so long. Horrible host. Completely incompetent and had a young girl come get us and seat us and say “I’m sorry you had to wait” even though we all know it was his job and he should have made it right and apologized himself. We used to enjoy coming to this place... then they expanded, so did their prices, but sadly the food not only suffered it became ridiculous to buy. For example, 4 medium sized shrimp “tapas” (so no sides or accompaniments) for $12! First of all they were bland at best and second that’s not a good price point for tapas unless you have at least 2 Michelin stars and are located in NYC. Everything on the menu was “ok” and wildly overpriced. We spend at least a week or 2 every year in Spain and Portugal so I expect you to know what you are doing when you put octopus on the menu.... WARNING! It was awful!! I had to send it back! It was so chewy and tasteless and had obviously been frozen for some time.... In conclusion, we won’t return to Taberna. They are putting a bad taste in people’s mouths when it comes to the wonderful bar foods of Spain and it’s a tragedy.
We love Taberna! Best tapas restaurant in Durham. We took my parents there when they were visiting. It was excellent as always & my parents loved it as much as us. Every dish was so tasty and service there is always top notch. I’m so glad they’ve expanded their dining space too so more people can enjoy this great restaurant.
Excellent! Place has a good vibe to it upon entering. Service was terrific; attentive but not annoying. We ordered starters, share-ables and a paella and all were extremely good. The paella was a huge hit with my husband and very filling. Our server was cool with letting us take our time and enjoy the evening; there was no feeling we needed to finish up so they could turn the table and they were quite busy. We enjoyed after dinner drinks and dessert long after we had finished our other courses. Would highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely return many times. The Frederick Margarita is amazing!
Overall, we had a great first visit to Taberna Tapas! The chimichuri steak, potatoes, chicken and ham rollup and asparagus were all very tasty, and ended the meal pleasantly full (two people sharing 4 plates). Prices were comparable to other tapas locations in he triangle area. The strawberries and cream were refreshing, and while I was a bit bummed that they were out of the molten chocolate cake at 7pm on a Friday, it probably would have been the tipping point to way too full. Would also love to see a port on the menu in addition to the sherry for dessert wines, which we chatted about with out server.
We were headed to a show at Carolina Theater, and there was also a large show going on at DPAC (Les Mis), and our server was aware of this and had us out right on time!
We'll be back!
Up until dinner last week, I was a fan of Taberna. I invited a friend to go to dinner pre-DPAC show and was excited to share one of my favorite restaurants with her. However, I ended up apologizing more than once for the food. We ordered my favorites - Albondigas in Almond sauce, Roasted NC Brussel Sprouts and Flank Steak dish. I almost choked on the Albondigas in Almond Sauce. So dry I had to take a sip of water to swallow. The Brussel sprouts were okay - not very flavorful. Flank Steak - fairly good. Thankfully the wine and dessert were excellent. Service was good, however, I've had better experiences on previous visits to Taberna. Was excited to see the seating space and bar expand. Very disappointed and will think twice before returning.
Ate here prior to a DPAC show. Wait staff was fun and friendly and very knowledgeable and helpful with regard to different menu items. The food was excellent - the flavors of the different ingredients really came through. We will definitely stop in here again when attending shows!
We went for restaurant week. Two of us ordered from the restaurant week menu. The other two ordered from the regular menu. We had short ribs, lamb chops, and the clams chorizo. For $30 it was a good deal for the ribs and the lamb chops (3decent sized chops.) ribs nice and tender - chops cooked med rare. the clams were not good. Over cooked with the chorizo dried out. The other restaurant week menu person ordered the cod cakes. They were very tasty. The other two ordered the paella. Which was quite tasty decent portion for $16 and crab cakes which were tasty but a small portion. Yes we know it was tapas. It was overall a good experience. The service was good except we would have preferred that the tapas were not all brought out together and had been spaced out.
We (2 of us) had a 7:30 dinner reservation, restaraunt was busy but several tables for two ( and 4) were open, but we told someone was still eating at our table and would be a short wait. All the seats at bar were taken and we were going to order a drink but told we couldn’t stand where we were, so we went by the entrance and complained about not be able to stand to get a drink, suddenly we were seated.
Disappointed to learn short ribs were sold out already at 7:45 so they allowed us to substitute it for a trey mare paella only to be disappointed with this dish as there were only a few pieces of shrimp, 4mussels and lots of squid, the rice was dry and sticking to the cast iron dish that the entree was served in. Our lamp chops were very tasty as well as the lemon tart.
While the food was great- they've just doubled the space they occupy, and clearly have not worked out the kinks yet. We had a 6 pm reservation for 6 people. Our first few drinks and plates came out quickly and were delicious, but then things slowed down. It took 20 minutes to get our last tapas dish (order placed same time as the rest). And 30 minutes to get the desert we ordered. In the end we had to go track down our server, who had disappeared into the other half of the restaurant busy dealing with other customers and beg him for the check, just so we could leave in time to get to a show at Carolina Theater at 8 pm. Still great food, but they definitely need to work out some logistics
Although our server did her best to make up for it, it was very clear that you were understaffed that night. The food was slightly above average but some dishes were udnerseasonsed and we ended up walking out with our last tapa because it had taken over 35 minutes to get there and we had to go. We were there for 1.5 hour overall. The food running process was chaotic too, runners didn’t seem to know where they were running the food or crossing out items so some items were being run twice and some not at all. We were very excited because we had heard good things about the restaurant but we were disappointed.
Taberna is a nice gem in downtown Durham serving Spanish and unique tapas and some entrée plates. The restaurant is small and you sit right on each other but the food is very good with some unusual offerings as well as some traditional. Definitely a good place to try if wanting to get a different taste.
I had my birthday party at Taberna Tapas last Friday. In addition to the amazing food, they've expanded the space since I last was there which was a great investment on their part. It's a great place for business parties or any occasion that would involve a large group.
8:15PM reservations on NYE: arrived at 8:15. Asked to sit at bar until table became ready. At 8:45, we were prepared to leave. Management asked us to be patient. One of the wait staff told us that we might as well be quiet and wait since it wasn't like we'd have anywhere else to go. Ready to leave, we were ushered to a table and felt pressured by multiple staff to stay. What a mistake.
As we were being seated, I remarked to the manager that I had previously dined at this restaurant and had great meals but felt that the staff was exceptionally rude on this night. His response was to ask us if we would feel better if he gave us drinks. I thought this was rhetorical, but he actually waited impatiently for an answer. We sat. He came back with glasses of prosecco.
Our waitress arrived and asked to take our orders. We were informed that the kitchen closes at 9:15. It was now 9:00. Honestly, why even give us a table at this point? She assumed that we'd be ready to order since we'd been waiting at the bar: we hadn't been given menus at the bar. The table next to us had a reservation for 8:45: we struck up conversation with them and they also thought it was dishonest to allow such late reservations in relation to the kitchen's closing time.
A pintxo came out first and was good. Our dessert came out next... The waitress was upset when we asked if it could be brought out later. 4 more savory dishes then came out, then same dessert was brought back. Food was decent. Dessert also came out before several savory dishes for table next to us. One of the patron's remarked that it would've been better to go to McDonald's for equitable value-to-quality. Another table was vocal in trying to get drinks delivered in timely fashion and finally gave up and had to wait for a good while before getting check and being able to blissfully leave.
One of my worst dining experiences in recent memory, having lived in Triangle for 10+ years and having dined at 100+ local restaurants.
While I love Tapas restaurants, Taberna left me disappointed... and my wallet quite a bit lighter.
While the food is good, the portions are very small even for Tapas standards and expensive to boot. The meatballs and croquettas were very good but the patatas bravas and gambas (which are my go-to dishes to judge a tapas joint by) were OK without much to differentiate by. A bit more spice in the former and a bit more quantity (only 4 shrimp?) in the latter would have been appreciated.
Conscientious staff. Very friendly and helpful.
