We love going to Taberna Tapas with a group of 4-6. Really great food and good service. A few plates did get lost (we ordered a lot at once) but our server made sure they were eventually brought out.
Incredible food in a cozy setting. Service was great.
Great Place! Small and quiet, perfect spot for a first date. Atmosphere was perfect, service was great, food was outstanding!
I dined at Taberna in February 2019 and had an amazing experience so I was excited to return on a recent visit to Durham. In fortunately, the second experience did not live up to the first. The staff seemed very disorganized and intent on turning tables at all costs. We had to ask for a wine list and then our tapas were served about 15 minutes before we received our wine — seems to defeat the principle of tapas. Each server was different and never checked to see if we needed any thin (e.g., our wine), and the entire evening was rushed. The tapas were good and reasonably authentic, but not quite as good as my first visit. I think they were preparing them in advance as part of their quest to turn tables.
I will try them again, but I hope my third visit is like the first and not the second.
Date night with my wife
This service was great the food was great the drinks was fantastic enjoyed it very much will return
Great light dinner before DPAC show. Waitstaff attentive but not intrusive. Recommended dishes to order based on our time constraints. Look forward to a return visit.
Loved our meals. Service is always wonderful.
We received room temperature water to start. Then we were presented a charcuterie that had very thinly sliced sweaty cheeses and some warm meat. After that I lost my appetite and didn’t even feel like eating what was to come. I choked down a croquette and was charged too much for a couple of skimpy empanadas. The asparagus and roasted Brussel sprouts were the highlight. The waitress did her best to accommodate us, but the kitchen was a fail.
food felt overpriced for quantity. Some items much larger than others. Wait staff was overwhelmed at first and had trouble serving drinks at the same time. Restaurant felt old- booths were torn. Needs an update. Would recommend Mateo down the street as an alternative. May be back if nothing else was available.
Consistently good when you are in the mood for trying a number of dishes.
Went out to dinner with my husband and daughter on a weeknight. Looking for an alternative to Mateo's since their menu has recently changed. Our first impression was the server. She was cold and abrasive. She handed out the menus and walked away. Never asked if we had dined there before, or if we had any food allergies. She also failed to offer any recommendations. We had the spicy lamb sausage, bacon wrapped dates, Arugula salad, braised beef short ribs, empanadas de pollo, Valenciana paella, the sangria and churros, bread pudding, and a Rose sangria. Food came out as ready, tapa style. The salad was delicious. We wanted more. The bacon wrapped dates were suspect, but an interesting concept. The spicy lamb sausage is served on a tiny sliced baguette in slices and seemed overcooked and tasted gamey. The braised short rib might have been the worst I've ever tasted. Bland and room temperature to boot. We left it on the table. The Valenciana was the best tasting dish. We would come back for this alone. The empanadas are skimpy but they had a good flavor. The sangria was decent. The Rose sangria was not. The bread pudding fell apart and tasted mushy. However, the churros were heavenly, served with warm chocolate sauce. Willing to give them another try. Our bill was over $200 with tip and service. We are happy to pay for a great meal with great service. This visit did not meet our expectations.
We have eaten here many times, the food and the service were excellent.
The food was average (meatballs were chewy, salad was bland) and for the price, I expected better. Service was not what I would have expected--the server was scattered.
Great service. Prompt. Generous portions for lunch. Great sangria made on premises.
Our favorite downtown Durham restaurant.
We love Taberna! As far as the food goes, it can’t be beat. During our dinner last weekend, our service was less than stellar. However, we had a group of 6 and the day seemed to be extra crazy due to the festival going on right outside the restaurant- I’m sure they were nonstop slammed. We have been here 3 times and this was the only time we didn’t get good service.
Nevertheless, the food is SO good I can’t bear to give any less than 4 stars. The Valenciana Paella is a must order item. It is better than any paella I ever tried while visiting Spain!!! The patatas bravas and chimichurri steak are more favorites from the menu.
Second time eating here. Food is good, service both times awful. Had to ask for second menu, it was never brought. Had to eat first few tapas with fingers, because no silverware provided and waitress disappeared. She never came back to take second drink order (restaurant lost money there). Brought check and took CC, but disappeared for 10 minutes when we are trying to get to DPAC. Had to ask at the bar for my check back. Won’t be back again.
Loved the window side table, but not the flies! Still lots of fun!
The menu offers a variety of items and typical tapas size. We ordered grilled octopus, arugula salad with ham, brussels sprouts, skirt steak and bacon wrapped dates. All were excellent, except for the skirt steak. The meat was a bit tough.
The reason that we gave a low rating is because the restaurant has a huge fly problem! We were seated by the window and there were a lot of flies that we had to keep waving off so they don't land on our food. Not only that, when we dug into our roasted brussels sprouts, a semi conscious fly was squirming in it! When we brought up the issue to our waitress, she nonchalantly said, "So you want to put in another order?" without any apologies! Needless to say, it ruined our appetite for the rest of the evening. Thank goodness the brussels sprouts were the last item that was served.
We would only consider revisiting the restaurant if they address the fly problem.
Quantity and quality of food was very good. Service, while advertised to be "fast," was a bit slow - but didn't make us worry about "being late" for our theater tickets. Food was above average, definitely representative of our food-excursions in Spainl We would go back, for sure. FYI, alcohol is quite expensive - drink water and the food is a good value.
Really enjoyed it. Great menu. Host was a little snooty.
We waited over an hour for a food and didn’t get our appetizers until the end.
Upon arrival the host said they were waiting on the previous party to get up from our table and showed us to the bar to wait. Nearly a half hour later we asked about the table and it was clear he forgot about us, pushed some small tables together, and sat us. After we ordered our dishes came out at varying speeds, not abnormal for tapas, except we got some duplicates for some reason, and others came out exceptionally late. One of the dishes we were told a while after ordering it they were out of, then we had to wait even longer for something else to replace it. They seemed a little unprepared for a Friday night, but I’m not sure why that would be since they’ve been around for a while. Not going to say I’ll never be back, but it is pretty much for reasons like this that it was our third choice when making reservations.
Lovely place, good food, nice sized portions.Nice ambience,no loud obnoxious music, you can actually hear each other!!!
I had the red sangria-very good! Paella was wonderful as well, we will be back.
Great staff as well..ask for Chrystal!
An evening out with friends, old and new. Great tapas and paella and of course, desserts!
Great folks serving great food & drinks. Also very flexible with our reservations as we needed to add 4 seats at the last minute and they accommodated our request without issue.
Great food and excellent service. It’s a bit pricey if you get a lot of variety.
Great selection of tapas and small plates, sure to please every palate.
Pork/ beef meatballs tapas were tasteless. Crispy pork tapas small plate dry, not palatable & shrimp paella was nothing to write home about. Waitstaff friendly but not attentive enough. Nothing remarkable here. Such a disappointment. We will not return.
Always top notch. We brought our friends who just moved here and they loved it too!
Our server was out of this world and made my mom feel really special on her birthday. Her recommendations were also spot on. Food was comparable to an unnamed place down the street, but the noise level and frenzy was less intrusive.
We ate here for lunch on a Saturday. There was a bartender and one server. The restaurant was not busy; there were only two other tables besides ourselves. The bartender was our server and was not overly pleasant; the other server only had one table with two people. The bartender was waiting on the two other tables. He was not attentive and was more focused on cutting lemons and making drinks than waiting on us. The food was good, but nothing special. The ambiance was just ok. My suggestion . . . walk down the street to Mateo Bar de Tapas.
Very good food; neat vibe. A little loud, but not overwhelming. A little pricey for what you get.
Great as always!
It was wonderful and enjoyed by all.
Very nice selection of Tapas dishes accompanied by a full bar.
Pat is an excellent bartender!
The food here is always excellent. While it's not quiet, it's not noisy either. Just a nice sound of people enjoying themselves. The service was also great.
Great Tapas always spot on! Wonderful Dino g experience every time
Delicious food & drinks, lovely atmosphere. The crab stuffed peppers are a must. Service wasn’t great. Drinks took forever to arrive. We ordered them before deciding on tapas, but our first plates arrived well before our drinks. Our server, bless his heart, dropped our check off & clocked out w/o asking if we wanted drinks/desserts. It was maybe 930pm.
